      Are you kidding me you Fed nuthugger? Plenty of servers have better serves...Ivanisevic's, Roddick's, Becker's and Pete Sampras' just to name a few.

    It helps me much - in the past I looked at several videos to improve my serve. This one is one of the completest explanation of a good serve.
    In the past, I often lost more service games then return games. In the last three month I was able to win more service games and serve asses. Thank You!

    You are a fantastic teacher!
    Federer has an excellent serve that relies on power, variety, and consistency. He also knows when to be aggressive.
    Sometimes, at the beginning of a match against an unfamiliar opponent he will serve a flat serve straight into their forehand (right into their strike zone) just to see what they can do with it. If they can't aggressively return a serve like this, then he knows that they can't hurt him and he could have an easy day.

      Thanks for asking! Think theres a gap in the market for the phase between trophy and strike, for example keeping elbow high.
      With the leg drive and turn out of the coil it seems to happen naturally but would be good to get some tips on the upper body / arm and shoulder motion at this point.

    Great stuff as always. I watched this a year ago and made some adjustments, and a year later there are so many new adjustments to discover. One minor quibble: Fed's toss seems to drop a lot more than 6 inches. More like 24+ inches on his flat serve (see the 5:30 mark). Even at 11:25 you can see how long the ball floats off frame. The ball does drop only 6 inches when you do the Fed serve.

    • @TopTennisTrainingOfficial
      @TopTennisTrainingOfficial  4 года назад +1

      Thanks for watching Jawad.
      Federer's toss could be higher, although in most clips I've filmed and watched of him, he tends to have a very compact toss.

    I’ve tried to make my serve similar to Federer’s. I had a mate video me and a couple of things you demonstrated that stood out to me. One was the ball toss and the other is staying/turning in line with the baseline. I’ve been able to make those adjustments and it’s much better already! Cheers man.

      - Federer’s backhand (I’ve watched plenty of slow motion vids haha)
      - Basic overhead tips
      - Maybe something on returning serve and approach shots too
      - Also defensive forehands (like the slice/squash shot)

    Thanks again for another great lesson Simon. I'm finally feeling connected and thus more confident in the upper body part of my serve. It's now time to incorporate my legs into my serve. I was never sure when to begin the knee bend, but I think I have a pretty good notion now. I agree with German re.: the best servers. Although I'd add Navratilova.

    Your explanation of the biomechanics is top notch and in addition you have the courage to actually demonstrate a serve that overall is very close to RFed's and appears to be very well timed, relaxed and powerful ... I am green with envy LOL. I'm saving this and watching it multiple times. Really interesting, the tip about using the back leg to generate power is not something I've seen elsewhere. Also, I assumed when Roger was striking the ball at the peak he would be up on his toes and dragging into the court (and I've watched him a million times on TV and have seen him in person several times), but his feet actually leave the ground! Kinetic chain energy and synergy near to perfection.

    Hey Simon - great job as always. One thing I did notice is that Fed actually has a bit of a drop from the peak of the toss before he is striking it - more like a couple of feet than inches. Looking at the ball at the 11:00 minute mark of your video shows this pretty clearly. I've found that for me, tossing the ball with a bit of excess height improves my ability to really reach up for it as opposed to trying to time the move with the peak of the toss (if that makes sense).

    • @TopTennisTrainingOfficial
      @TopTennisTrainingOfficial  6 лет назад +2

      Some players benefit from a slightly higher ball toss.
      You always have to consider the wind if you're someone who plays outdoors a lot.
      No way that Federer tosses the ball a few feet higher than contact though.
      Ideally your ball toss should be no higher than 6 inches above your contact point.
      Thanks for watching
      All the best
      Simon

    • @edcreaden681
      @edcreaden681 6 лет назад +1

      Thanks for your reply Simon. I made this comment because I can see at the 10:55 minute mark in this video, the ball is well over the top of the second "i" in your logo. At contact point, which is at the 10:56 minute mark, the ball is below the top of the shorter building in the background. I know it can be deceiving based on angles, but looking at his racket as a measure of scale, it appears that the ball has dropped about 2 feet or so.
      Interestingly, something else he does that seems a little unconventional for the pros, is that he actually has a moment where his racket face is facing the sky during the racket drop, which is something I've worked on eliminating in my motion based on lessons I have taken.
      I guess it goes to show that even at the top of the professional level, there is no perfect recipe for a perfect service motion!
      Cheers!

    Awesome stuff, no mambo jumbo nonsense, just quality content! Good job! Btw., do you have a video about tennis serve stance? I just recently started to improve my stance with adjusting my stance to be paralel with baseline, but it is somewhat hard for me to get it right as much as I would like to haha :)

  • @irado168
    @irado168 5 лет назад +3

    Simon, outstanding analysis! For the toss, how do you make the ball go into the court when the toss is along the baseline?
    I tried to toss along the baseline, but the ball would always end up directly over the baseline while my body was leaning into the court so the toss was way behind me.

    • @TopTennisTrainingOfficial
      @TopTennisTrainingOfficial  5 лет назад +2

      As you're tossing, have the arm move in line with the baseline but also going towards the net slightly, so by the time you release the ball, the hand is inside the court and the momentum is going forward also

    Another important point is Roger's eye contact to the opponent. The guy takes off his eye 👀 only at the last moment after the toss, which gives him an idea of what the opponent is upto while receiving the serve.

    Hi Simon. When Federer serves does he throw the ball in front of him as well because it is quite challenging to do so when sideways or is the toss more diagonal left so it is more in front on the flat than the slice etc. (I have always been taught the ball toss goes in front of baseline).

  • @marcodemidio7354
    @marcodemidio7354 6 лет назад +1

    Hi Simon, excellent as always. What do you think is Fed’s body weight distribution on his legs during the pose? I always thought his back leg had at least 60-70% of it, since the front leg is used for balance and pivoting.
    Thanks for what you do!

    • @TopTennisTrainingOfficial
      @TopTennisTrainingOfficial  6 лет назад +1

      Thanks for watching Marco.
      I agree, I'd put the weight distribution at around 60% back leg at the start of the knee bend and then there is a shift forwards as he is pushing up but his back leg does a lot of work.
      Most players don't focus on that back leg but it's crucial on the platform stance.
      All the best
      Simon

    hi Simon, thanks for the analysis. since he gives nothing away w/ the ball toss, does that mean he might give something away slightly for when he times hitting the ball? i.e. if he's hitting it when the ball is more on the right side for the slice, his contact is quicker than it would be for the kick since the ball is dropping a touch more? I ask more for my own learning of the contact point of course =) I have noticed something more of a faster action (timing from toss to contact) in the last year or so from toss to contact in some of his serves than I've seen in the older videos, wondering your thoughts on that. thx again

    Thanks so much for the videos! One quick question if possible. When I serve for a little while I start to get some pain in my elbow. Do you have any tips or reasons for it? Am I not following through enough? Or perhaps too tense in my arm? The tennis elbow does not flare up when only doing ground strokes. Thanks so much your time once again!

    • @TopTennisTrainingOfficial
      @TopTennisTrainingOfficial  5 лет назад +2

      Hi Shane
      Without seeing your serve, I can only guess.
      In my experience, when that happens you're either:
      1. Not finishing in the correct way (full pronation) and allowing the arm to relax after contact
      2. Not using the ideal grip which causes you to push the ball with your strings flat towards the court and stresses the arm if done at high speeds.
      3. Too tight during the motion.
      All the best
      Simon

    great explanation of federers serve , but i think he still needs more hiprotation if he wants to go faster
    the trophy position is more a personal thing, if you watch karlovics , djokovic and nadal , they dont have it , so the question is , should you learn it , should you change to it if you dont have it ?????

    • @TopTennisTrainingOfficial

      In regards to the trophy position, all those players you mention reach the trophy pose. They might not pause in that position but they go through it.

    Hey Simon I'm teaching a young Jr girl with a lotta talent. But she's got good power but lacks consistency on her serve. She uses pinpoint and is a lefty. My question is can she continue with pinpoint and implement these techniques that you demonstrate Federer using with platform or should I try to change her to platform so she can implement these Fed techniques. She's 12 so I think it's early enough. Like to hear your thoughts.

    Thanks Simon for the very good video! I have shoulder pain when serving, but when I am doing shadow swings with a very loose arm and grip and let the racket drop very low behind my back I don't feel any pain. When serving with a ball I have troubles staying loose because of the timing to hit te ball and the pain comes back. Do you have suggestions how to stay loose when hitting a real serve?

    • @TopTennisTrainingOfficial
      @TopTennisTrainingOfficial  6 лет назад +3

      Thanks for watching.
      Yes try to do one shadow swing then a real serve. Repeat this cycle over and over again until you start feeling that both movements are almost the same.
      Also film your serve and have a closer look at what happens when you do the shadow swings vs the real serve and see what is actually happening. Are you using the body to generate power or the arm etc
