You are a fantastic teacher! Federer has an excellent serve that relies on power, variety, and consistency. He also knows when to be aggressive. Sometimes, at the beginning of a match against an unfamiliar opponent he will serve a flat serve straight into their forehand (right into their strike zone) just to see what they can do with it. If they can't aggressively return a serve like this, then he knows that they can't hurt him and he could have an easy day.
@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial Thanks for asking! Think theres a gap in the market for the phase between trophy and strike, for example keeping elbow high. Great stuff as always. I watched this a year ago and made some adjustments, and a year later there are so many new adjustments to discover. One minor quibble: Fed's toss seems to drop a lot more than 6 inches. More like 24+ inches on his flat serve (see the 5:30 mark). Even at 11:25 you can see how long the ball floats off frame. Awesome stuff, no mambo jumbo nonsense, just quality content! Good job! Btw., do you have a video about tennis serve stance? I just recently started to improve my stance with adjusting my stance to be paralel with baseline, but it is somewhat hard for me to get it right as much as I would like to haha :)
The different serve stances is something we cover in depth inside our Master Your Serve course. Nothing on youtube about it. Thanks for watching. All the best Simon
Simon, outstanding analysis! For the toss, how do you make the ball go into the court when the toss is along the baseline? I tried to toss along the baseline, but the ball would always end up directly over the baseline while my body was leaning into the court so the toss was way behind me.
As you're tossing, have the arm move in line with the baseline but also going towards the net slightly, so by the time you release the ball, the hand is inside the court and the momentum is going forward also
Love your analysis! Can you please analyze Goran Ivanisevic’s serve in one of your videos? Particularly his front on serve which faced the court rather than the side lines!
Hey Josh, our web developers are working on it now as the next major project to be launched. Hopefully in the coming 6-8 weeks it should be ready. All the best Simon
Another important point is Roger's eye contact to the opponent. The guy takes off his eye 👀 only at the last moment after the toss, which gives him an idea of what the opponent is upto while receiving the serve.
Thanks for tuning in. It's a prototype racket, keeping it all white to give nothing away. I'll ne able to discuss it in more depth by the summer hopefully
Hi Simon. When Federer serves does he throw the ball in front of him as well because it is quite challenging to do so when sideways or is the toss more diagonal left so it is more in front on the flat than the slice etc. (I have always been taught the ball toss goes in front of baseline).
Hi Simon, excellent as always. What do you think is Fed’s body weight distribution on his legs during the pose? I always thought his back leg had at least 60-70% of it, since the front leg is used for balance and pivoting. Thanks for what you do!
Thanks for watching Marco. I agree, I'd put the weight distribution at around 60% back leg at the start of the knee bend and then there is a shift forwards as he is pushing up but his back leg does a lot of work. Most players don't focus on that back leg but it's crucial on the platform stance. All the best Simon
hi Simon, thanks for the analysis. since he gives nothing away w/ the ball toss, does that mean he might give something away slightly for when he times hitting the ball? i.e. if he's hitting it when the ball is more on the right side for the slice, his contact is quicker than it would be for the kick since the ball is dropping a touch more? I ask more for my own learning of the contact point of course =) I have noticed something more of a faster action (timing from toss to contact) in the last year or so from toss to contact in some of his serves than I've seen in the older videos, wondering your thoughts on that. thx again
Thanks so much for the videos! One quick question if possible. When I serve for a little while I start to get some pain in my elbow. Do you have any tips or reasons for it? Am I not following through enough? Or perhaps too tense in my arm? The tennis elbow does not flare up when only doing ground strokes. Thanks so much your time once again!
Hi Shane Without seeing your serve, I can only guess. In my experience, when that happens you're either: 1. Not finishing in the correct way (full pronation) and allowing the arm to relax after contact 2. Not using the ideal grip which causes you to push the ball with your strings flat towards the court and stresses the arm if done at high speeds. 3. Too tight during the motion. All the best Simon
great explanation of federers serve , but i think he still needs more hiprotation if he wants to go faster the trophy position is more a personal thing, if you watch karlovics , djokovic and nadal , they dont have it , so the question is , should you learn it , should you change to it if you dont have it ?????
In regards to the trophy position, all those players you mention reach the trophy pose. They might not pause in that position but they go through it. Thanks for watching All the best Simon

Hey Simon I'm teaching a young Jr girl with a lotta talent. But she's got good power but lacks consistency on her serve. She uses pinpoint and is a lefty. My question is can she continue with pinpoint and implement these techniques that you demonstrate Federer using with platform or should I try to change her to platform so she can implement these Fed techniques. She's 12 so I think it's early enough. Like to hear your thoughts.
This is amazing and i have a doubt on how federer's raquet rotates while hitting the serve and does he follow the two rotation of the raquet while serving?
Thanks Simon - Great video. My question is that sometimes you show Federer, Nadal, or Ferrer (I think) practicing on a clay court someplace. It looks like they are playing a practice set. Where is that court? It looks beautiful.
Thanks Simon for the very good video! I have shoulder pain when serving, but when I am doing shadow swings with a very loose arm and grip and let the racket drop very low behind my back I don't feel any pain. When serving with a ball I have troubles staying loose because of the timing to hit te ball and the pain comes back. Do you have suggestions how to stay loose when hitting a real serve?
Thanks for watching. Yes try to do one shadow swing then a real serve. Repeat this cycle over and over again until you start feeling that both movements are almost the same. Also film your serve and have a closer look at what happens when you do the shadow swings vs the real serve and see what is actually happening. Are you using the body to generate power or the arm etc

Thanks a lot for this great video! I always liked the very special serve of Stefan Edberg. Maybe you could analize this serve on day?

I’ve done an Ivanisevic serve analysis for our serve course on our website www.Top-Tennis-Training.com 👍
Great lesson, thanks!

Hey guys when is the membership portion of your website going to be available?! Can’t wait to sign up!
I also struggle serving on the dueled side... do you turn your body more to get the ball over there?
Hey Josh, our web developers are working on it now as the next major project to be launched. Hopefully in the coming 6-8 weeks it should be ready.

Another important point is Roger's eye contact to the opponent. The guy takes off his eye 👀 only at the last moment after the toss, which gives him an idea of what the opponent is upto while receiving the serve.
A good observation
what a beautiful serve
Hey Simon. Good video with great tips! Btw what racket is this? Did you just paint it white?
Thanks for tuning in.
It's a prototype racket, keeping it all white to give nothing away.
I'll ne able to discuss it in more depth by the summer hopefully
5:20 this "baseline" toss is helpful to "force" a nice shoulder rotation through trophy position, good drill. EDIT: oh you mention it just after!
Thank you sir. Very nice
Thanks for watching 👍
Most players don't focus on that back leg but it's crucial on the platform stance.

hi Simon, thanks for the analysis. since he gives nothing away w/ the ball toss, does that mean he might give something away slightly for when he times hitting the ball? i.e. if he's hitting it when the ball is more on the right side for the slice, his contact is quicker than it would be for the kick since the ball is dropping a touch more? I ask more for my own learning of the contact point of course =) I have noticed something more of a faster action (timing from toss to contact) in the last year or so from toss to contact in some of his serves than I've seen in the older videos, wondering your thoughts on that. thx again
Great video
Thanks so much for the videos! One quick question if possible. When I serve for a little while I start to get some pain in my elbow. Do you have any tips or reasons for it? Am I not following through enough? Or perhaps too tense in my arm? The tennis elbow does not flare up when only doing ground strokes. Thanks so much your time once again!
Hi Shane
Without seeing your serve, I can only guess.
In my experience, when that happens you're either:
1. Not finishing in the correct way (full pronation) and allowing the arm to relax after contact
2. Not using the ideal grip which causes you to push the ball with your strings flat towards the court and stresses the arm if done at high speeds.
3. Too tight during the motion.

great explanation of federers serve , but i think he still needs more hiprotation if he wants to go faster
the trophy position is more a personal thing, if you watch karlovics , djokovic and nadal , they dont have it , so the question is , should you learn it , should you change to it if you dont have it ?????
In regards to the trophy position, all those players you mention reach the trophy pose. They might not pause in that position but they go through it.

Great Video, Simon! Thanks for sharing the insights. Where do you coach? Any chance you are here in California?
Hi Shiva
Unfortunately it's not in Cali haha
I'm currently based in sunny London.
We are arranging some camps for later in the year and in 2019 and we might visit Cali as one of the locations, the best way to stay updated is to join our email list by visiting our website and signing up for one of the free video series or downloadable PDFs

Thanks, I'll look up and keep in touch. Even if you are visiting Australia, that would be great, I might actually be moving in the later part this year.
how about in Florida - West coast near IMG?
Question Simon: what's your average serve speed and what's the fastest serve you've ever hit? Also, do you know the fastest serve that Alex has hit?
Thanks for watching
Those courts are in Monte Carlo, Monaco.
Great place to visit and watch the tennis in April

Have you any videos on the actual toss Fed uses?
Thanks for the quick advice! I am going to try it
Good luck
