John Amos tripping over those stairs was a real accident. He stayed in the moment and the director kept it in the movie. What a pro!

Plus the line about breaking his foot off in the king’s ass was completely improvised.
Someone should write a book on the # of accidents left in films that have become,like the stormtrooper hitting his head in Star wars, so memorable😎
No kidding: I'm a wedding minister and one of my brides started to walk down the aisle, and a guest stood up and sang "She's Your Queen To Be." It took every ounce of energy to maintain my professional demeanor. I laughed a LOT on the way home afterward, though.

There was about a decade from 1980 to 1990 when Eddie Murphy ruled the entertainment world. Saved Saturday Night Live single handed. Epic best selling comedy albums and tours. A hit record. Iconic comedies and action comedies such as Trading Places, Coming to America, 48 Hours and Another 48 hours, Beverly Hills Cop 1 and 2. He was that rare combination of raw talent, intelligence and charm.
I must be that guy... you forgot "The Golden Child". Amazing and hilarious movie.
“She’s your queen to be” and “just let your soul glo” is classic.
Fun fact: for the movie's 30th anniversary a few years ago, an independently operated McDonald's in Chicago "dressed" as McDowell's for Halloween. The owner changed the sign, the menu and the employee uniforms. It was brilliant.
Also, James Earl Jones and Madge Sinclair would go on to voice Simba's parents in "The Lion King" (1994).
Playing a King and Queen once again.
I wonder if it was just a coincidence or if Disney saw/heard of this movie and decided to cast them both for those roles

There was also a touring McDowell’s pop-up shop that traveled to different cities last year in honor of the film’s anniversary
"Do not alert him to my presence, I shall deal with him myself" is a play off of a Darth Vader line - who James Earl Jones also did the voice for.

The dad who owned the "McDowell's" restaurant is actor John Amos who played the father ('James Evans') on the 70s sitcom, "Good Times". He's also starred in many, many movies over the years, including Die Hard 2 (which you guys should check out one day). And also talk about more connections, Samuel Jackson (who played the robber in this movie) also starred in "Die Hard 3: With a Vengeance". The actress who played Prince Hakeem's mother is the late, great Madge Sinclair (1938-1995). She was unfortunately not in the sequel to this movie ("Coming 2 America") because she passed away, obviously. They pretty much brought everyone back for the sequel (who was still alive that is).
BTW, this was the first movie that featured Eddie Murphy's talent to do multiple characters in a film, long before he did The Nutty Professor.

One of the most quotable movies in existence. Never gets old.
I saw this the weekend it came out. When Randolph and Mortimer said “we’re back in business” the entire theater roared with laughter.
I always laugh when Eddie as the Jewish guy calls Akeem "Kunta Kinte" because Kunta Kinte is in this movie! John Amos, who you recognised but couldn't name, played the fully grown Kunta Kinte in Roots. He's been in so many things I think just about everyone can recognize him, even if his name doesn't come straight to mind.
One of my favorite lines… so good!
I remember him as being the dad from Good Times.

The barbershop scenes are great!
Did you notice that 2 of the barbershop characters were Eddie Murphy, and one was Arsenio Hall? Both of those guys played like 4 roles in the movie. It was brilliant.
Also the kid in the barber's chair trying to hold in his laughter was Cuba Gooding Jr
Anybody recognize the third barber, Eddie’s friend Clint Smith? I remember him from SNL, especially “write to ‘Clint: I’m sorry I thought you were a homosexual’.”
Also, us old folks will recognize the cab driver as Jake Steinfeld, fitness guru of “Body by Jake”. Youngsters will know his niece, Hailee Steinfeld.

I love how this film shows value - Akim could easily be an asswipe like the hair dude, or give up any moment, but he keeps being kind and tactful - even to the robber.

Eddie played multiple parts in this movie including the lead singer for “Sexual Chocolate”. I highly recommend “The Nutty Professor”, another of Eddie’s movies where he plays at least six separate characters and is very funny. Eddie received an Academy Award nomination for his role in the movie “Dreamgirls” where he plays a singer. He is a very talented singer and this movie really showcases his vocal and acting skills. It’s a story based loosely upon the career of The Supremes.

I was hoping seeing their reaction about that fact when credits rolled. Like them referencing there should be a movie about that barbershop and not realising it was him all along. I was thinking that if he was tired of the make-up he could fit well in voic3 acting and then remembered Donkey.
I'm so glad y'all liked this movie. It's truly a classic and groundbreaking. I was excited when I went to NY and saw the Waldorf Astoria hotel. I had to take a picture of it for my brother since it's his favorite movie.

I've only gotten to the part where John Amos's character is introduced and Amber is trying to figure out why he looks familiar. Had to stop and read some comments. I have way too much fun watching young people watch old classics. Such... good times. Wish I could remember if they'd watched Trading Places yet... seems I think they have, now they need to add Beastmaster for some more John Amos.

This is my favorite reaction of yours! This movie was important to me as a kid 'cuz it showed a guy who really wanted a smart girl who was his equal. And the barbershop was the funniest stuff.
In my opinion this is the greatest film ever made. It is so great that I'm legit terrified to watch part 2 and ruining the experience that this movie gives.
Shout out to Louie Anderson (McDowell employee). A hilarious stand-up comedian who always gets overlooked in reactions. He played the flower delivery man in Ferris Beuller's Day Off too.

This is close to a perfect movie as I've ever seen. And the "Trading Places" callback is one of my favorite moments in any film.

This movie is an absolute classic with soooo many lines that are still used to this day. The dance at the beginning that introduced fiancée was choreographed by Paula Abdul.

If you missed it, please go back to watch the end credits. I would love for you to watch Dream Girls with Beyoncé, Jennifer Hudson, and Eddie Murphy. It’s a musical, but it’s very good.

Madge Sinclair, who plays the Queen, was ALSO Mufasa's wife, Sarabi, on The Lion King. Again, whoever wrote The Lion King at Disney or whoever had a hand in casting the voices for the characters was a fan of this movie.
Shakespeare wrote The Lion King, technically. It’s an adaptation of Hamlet. The adaptation is so clever, though. Perfect setting.

Eddie had a spate of wonderful movies back in the day, but I think this is my absolute favorite. He's so funny and Arsenio Hall is even funnier! I never get tired of seeing this movie. I'm glad y'all had a chance to watch it, too.

I saw this in the theatre when it came out and the scene where the Duke bros appear, the crowd roared with laughter so loud, so funny 🤣
One thing many people miss is that James Earl Jones (the King) was the voice of Mufasa and Madge Sinclair (the Queen) was the voice of Sarabi. So they both played king and queen in another hugely popular movie. So yeah, the Lion King vibes are strong with this one.
This movie is genius. One of the few comedies that is so well written, there isn't a dull part in the entire movie. Rodney Dangerfield in "Back to School" is much the same way. Would be a great watch for the channel!
One of my favorite things in this movie is that Eddie regularly uses a technique called 'breaking the fourth wall'... the three walls of the stage are the left, back, and right... and the fourth wall is facing the audience. Eddie breaks out of the movie and looks straight at the audience (like when the future queen is barking) as if to say to the audience, 'can you believe this?'
Eddie and Eriq (Daryl) broke the 4th wall perfectly in this movie lol

Yes fourth wall breaks are hilarious, they kind of remind you not to take things to seriously, you will find this in some sitcoms and comedy movies as well. Will Smith was good at it on POB🤣

This movie is a work of comedic genius. I could watch it every day and never get bored of it.

When Akeem is at the turnstile in the subway, behind him on the wall is a poster for the Broadway play Fences. James Earl Jones starred in the premiere run of Fences which closed it's first year of performances on June 26, 1988...the same day that Coming To America was released in theaters.
Young Cuba Gooding Jr. is the kid getting his haircut in the barbershop when Akim arrive. Still funny and heartwarming over 35 years later!
A side note. This film won an Oscar. Best Choreography. - Paula Abdul. Someone who deserves more reactions on the music channel.
Paula was also dating Arsenio Hall during this time.

Like editing, cinematography, makeup, set design, costumes, etc. these at least were part of the Oscar awards that would be given out during the daytime, prior to the main show starting on TV. I don't know if they still are doing it today. But, from the 1950's-1990's I know they were done. Once CGI took hold...I am not sure if they still do them.
@@WolfsDE choreography was not a category in 1988 when the film came out. Sorry your “fact” isn’t accurate. Coming to America was nominated for best makeup and costumes but did not win either. A simple google search will go a long way.
If there was an award given out for choreography, it wasn't an Oscar. It was something else.
Another FUN FACT:
So the reason that opening song gave you "Lion King" vibes is because it is the same song you remember hearing in The Lion King, which came out about 10 years later. In this movie, you hear the original singers. I think the name of the group was Ladysmith Black Mambazo
The scene where Akeem and Semmi first go to the nightclub to meet women, the song playing in the background,, "I GOT IT",, was also performed by Eddie Murphy. Its from his 1988 music album called "SO HAPPY".
Lisa’s dad was the father in Good Times with JJ as his oldest son called ‘Kid Dynomite’.
After Arsenio got his late night show, people forgot he was a top tier comic and versatile performer pretty quickly. He might have been the best physical comic of his era. He came up through the clubs with Eddie and he knew his talent, brought him with him on the film.

Arsenio’s show was the best late night show. Aresnio snd Eddie are best friends. I used to laugh so hard when Eddie or even Sly Stallone would tease Aresnio about doing drag in this movie

Eddie Murphy's first starring movie role was in 48 Hrs. He co-starred with Nick Nolte. He had been hilarious working on TV in Saturday Night Live but this showed that he was ready for movies. Great action and comedy.
Go back and watch the end credits, they show all the characters they each played. One of my all time favorite EM films! So glad you both watched this! 👍👍💙

Can't believe it's been 7 years since I last saw this movie with my friends back during my last few weeks of Uni. It felt surreal to see Eddy Murphy playing a somewhat serious character when I grew up watching his more comedic movies like the Shrek movies, Mulan and The Nutty Professor

Another fun rags to riches movie is Arthur with Dudley Moore, Liza Minelli and Sir John Gielgud. Music by Christopher Cross. It's a classic, too.

You guys didn't watch the whole ending credits, they showed every character that both Eddie and Arsenio played in the movie. BTW, the old Jewish guy in the barber shop was Eddie Murphy too. I remember when this movie first came out, every character that Eddie played was obvious him in makeup, but nobody realized that the old Jewish man was him too. He fooled everyone with that one. The makeups was done so well, and his acting was spot on good.
The man who played Lisa’s dad that you couldn’t place is John Amos. He played the dad in the show Good Times and older Kunta Kinte in Roots, along with many other roles.
John Amos was fired from Good Times because he kept pushing for the smart daughters going to college to become the focus, and the producers wanted to keep making jokes about the son and his dumb jokes. That show could have been so much more if they kept Amos and listened to him.
John Amos was also in The Beastmaster (1982) and Die Hard 2 (1990) as well 😁
The dance number at the arranged wedding wasn’t actually created by anyone from Africa nor based on any specific traditional tribal dance. It was choreographed by Paula Abdul. She did some research but time was limited, so she winged it a bit. Still a fantastic sequence to a timeless classic movie. I worked at an old cinema in Oklahoma at this time and I was the projection booth guy, so I had to sit and watch this movie every night for two weeks. There was a tear in the film and had to monitor it to keep it in frame. Suffice to say, I can’t still quote every line to this day.
True, the dance number was not a specific traditional dance, but she did incorporate traditional African dance moves.
The dance scene was also the inspiration for Busta Rhymes Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Can See video.
Madge Sinclair gave one the most naturally-elegant portrayals of a queen I’ve ever seen. That woman is all class ❤
Rocky Marciano retired as Champion with an undefeated record in Boxing. btw.....The portly guy who spilled a drink as they are walking through "McDowells" is Minnesota's own native son comedian Louis Anderson.
For Black History Month I recommend “Glory” (Classic Denzel Washington, with Morgan Freeman, based on actual events) and “The Color Purple” (Steven Spielberg directed, Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah’s film debuts, based on a novel by Alice Walker). Both have disturbing facets but overall are great stories and excellent movies. Bring Kleenex and lots of it. So so good! 🔥🤙

The not knowing how to mop part hits different because in college I worked in the dorm kitchen and a student from Saudi Arabia got hired and was asked to mop the kitchen but he grew up with it being "women's work" and had never mopped in his life, so the man *dumped the entire bucket of water and soap onto the floor* and started sloshing it around. The cook ran over like what happened??? And he was like ...is that not how you do it? Took the poor guy HOURS to get it all soaked back up. xD
If you all want to stay on Eddie Murphy, Daddy Day Care is lighthearted and hilarious for people that are kids or have kids. At least I think so 😅 It’s so nostalgic to my childhood

You'd probably really love the movie Barbershop. It's not the same actors (the star is Ice Cube), but it's really funny and warmhearted as well, and it has the same feel as the barbershop in this. It's a classic.

Great reaction you two....the entire cast did reprise their roles for the sequel ''Coming 2 America' in 2021, along with newcomers Wesley Snipes, Leslie Jones, Tracy Morgan, Jermaine Fowler, KiKi Layne, Teyana Taylor, Bella Murphy (Eddie's real life daughter), Akiley Love, Rotimi, Nomzamo Mbatha, Luenell, Michael Blackson, Trevor Noah & Colin Jost...The sequel did get mixed reactions by both critics and audiences when it came out but I enjoyed it and laughed a lot. I think it is worth a watch in my opinion 😁👍

This is probably one of the 10 best comedies of the 1980s. I’d also include Trading Places. 1988 was quite a year for film. The Naked Gun, also one of the greatest comedies, was out that year, as well.
