Freaq FM Firmware v1.2 New Features
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 4 окт 2024
- A quick jam previewing a few features from the next firmware update: per-track clock division, exponential amplitude envelopes and additive LFO modulation.
Pre-track Clock Division:
Each track can independently run at a clock division of /1, /2, /3, /4, /8, /16, /32 or /64.
Exponential Amplitude:
Previous version uses linear ASR envelope, v1.2 features exponential AD envelopes for amplitude, producing much snappier percussive sounds
Additive LFO modulation:
Previous version simply replaced the target control value (eg amp decay) with the LFO value. v1.2 now adds the LFO to the current control value, giving greater expressive control.
Per-voice Detune
Not shown here, but v1.2 also includes per-voice fine and coarse detune.
Target release date: May 2023.
Version 1.2 has now been released! Download it at www.wireheadinstruments.com/support
Second thing I want to say: Your decision to use an inexpensive 8x8 matrix for display was brilliant . It makes the freaq very special and fluent to configure. Thx.
Thanks 😊
❤
Just built mine a couple days ago, first kit project. I'm hyped.
Perfect timing. Just cracked open my box to start building today.
Great stuff! ❤
Now I have to buy two... You're killing me... 🤣
do it! 😁😂
nice, thanks!!🖖
😍😍😍😍
This is so damn cool.
this little box looks fun and sounds really good. Can the sync input receive midi clock?
Thanks! Unfortunately not midi. It accepts analog sync like volca, pocket operator, Roland aira or eurorack.
Just ordered one today from your Tindie page!
Awesome, thanks! It’s shipped! 😊
@@wireheadinstruments yes I know, I got the tracking number from Australia Post!
Wooww love theese led matrix, nice and clear the way you show the pot stage. All the sounds in the jam are from the synth? The hi hats too? I'd love to get one
Thanks! Yes all sounds in this demo are produced by the Freaqs (except added reverb). You can get one (or two!) here: wireheadinstruments.com/wheretobuy
Do you want customers to buy a second freaq? 😂😂😂
Umm who me?? 😂
Hi! Really nice work! Sorry if it's a bit abusive but i've to ask... will the new firmware be open as the original one? Or just for the retail product? Thanks for this incredible creation!
no problem 😊 thanks for the feedback! sorry but the new firmware is not open and is only for the retail version and won't work as-is on the diy version hardware. In the future the retail may go open source but will make that decision down the track. Cheers!
Is it only one 2x16 step pattern? .. Osc Fine tune possible somewhere? Transpose? ..
The two tracks share a single 16 step note sequence, but have independent loop lengths and clock rates. Each voice’s oscillators can be detuned with fine control from +-1 semi and transpose to +-12 semis.
@@wireheadinstruments thanks for the reply.. wish it had some sort if Master tuning ..440hz is so passay 😘😎
@@PlayBackRate it can do 220 or 880 too 😂 but seriously you could fine tune both oscillators up or down a few cents to kick it off its 440 pedestal ☺️
@@wireheadinstruments few cents? DIY / digital calibration mod? One semi was the detuning implied 🤨
@PlayBackRate its all digital, but I meant to say that the detune has unquantised fine control between -1 and +1 (I don’t know the exact resolution) and then outside that range it is quantised to semitones. It applies at the voice level and can be saved with the patch. Example here (only one of the two voices is being detuned: instagram.com/reel/CqxTtV4PQNj/?igsh=am1kdnBzbWd5eTRu)
Hi,
I recently purchased a freaq fm from thonk. I don't know what firmware it contains. How do you know what version firmware? Thanks
Ps, i have other synths that are much more expensive than the freaq fm, yet they dont sound as cool as it. Very cool
Hi there - when you boot it up the Freaq will display the version number - should be the latest if you got it from thonk recently :)
Nice toy !
Is it eurorack compatible ?
Thanks 😊 it is eurorack compatible in terms of sync in/out (0-5v triggers) but the audio output is not eurorack 10vp-p, more like ~4vp-p, so needs a level boost to bring it up to modular levels. Also, I’m currently prototyping a eurorack version for release later this year
I try to sync 3 devices with freaq fm in the middle. I wonder if the freaq is able to pass through the sync signal from input to output?
Hi, yes you can and I do it all the time. The Freaq doesn’t actually pass through the incoming sync signal though, it generates its own. This approach works for most scenarios but has a couple of limitations - cascading latencies in long chains ( I haven’t noticed any lag in using 3-4 freaqs in a row - sync latency is < 4ms) and if you’re using a sync mode of 2 or 4 steps per pulse, the output pulse will also be every 2nd or 4th step but is not guaranteed to be the same step as the input pulse.
@@wireheadinstruments I have a Retrokits RK008 as first device with clock, freaq fm as second and crum drum third. As long as the freaq doesn’t receive sync from RK008 it syncs with crum drum. When I connect the RK008 to freaq it syncs to it but no sync anymore to crum drum.
Hmm. That’s odd and not expected behaviour. Maybe best to email me and we can dig into it?
Maybe add step sequencer (like Elektron) + Oled Display ?
Yeah I love the elektron sequencer! My digitakt is a beast! The philosophy behind the Freaq’s design is almost the opposite though! The generative workflow allows hands-on sound design exploration without the “distraction” of sequencing. Definitely has its limitations though, so future devices may reverse that ☺️
@@wireheadinstruments Very annoying is the matrix of LEDs, it's very easy to get confused in it
@@nugravityzm ok 😊it's not for everyone 😊
@wireheadinstruments sometimes less is more, but I don't have to tell you that. About to scoop this as my first diy kit!
Can I adjust the output volume of the freaq?
Sorry not natively - it blasts out hot! (But not as hot as eurorack levels, roughly 4V p-p).
Does it come in ER
hi, not at the moment but working on it 😊 ignore my earlier reply i am an idiot 😂 the DIY kit can be adapted with a panel and 10-pin power connector, but levels are lower than eurorack
Looking forward to it. Is patch saving still on the development roadmap? 🙂
👍🏻 Yes saving is still intended to be included in v1.2. No hard promises though - I did the easy things first 😂
@@wireheadinstruments It can't come too soon for me 🥴Today I had a fantastic sequence I'd been working on for an hour or so. I setup the camera to record a jam with it. I was powering the Freaq FM with a 9v Myvolts Ripcord from a USB battery bank. I noticed my Roland T-8 was low on charge so I plugged it into the spare USB port on the USB battery, this caused the Freaq FM to reboot. I could've cried! Still enjoying the Freaq though!
@@electro-soma arghhh nooooo! 😢
Regarding powering the Freaq FM. I tried both a 12v (SmplTrek PS) and 9v (Donner B1 PS). Both centre positive. The Freaq FM lights up but doesn't boot. Do you know why that could be? There must be a logical explanation. Cheers.
@@electro-soma I think there is an issue with the current version that tries to boot up the display before the power has stabilised upon power-on. this can be sometimes worked around by connecting the DC power connector first and then switching on the mains power. I am also working on a firmware fix to fix/reduce this issue. Drop me a DM on instagram and we can discuss further if that doesn't help.
When will 1.2 be released?
Chasing down a couple of last bugs, planning to release by end of June!
It’s out now 😊
