I’ve had heelers since 1997 and they are the best dogs. So intelligent that they are truly another family member and a great friend. Not for people who are anxious owners, they require stable, loving energy. You can’t train them with shouting, you have to understand their personality, they want to understand you, so if you are confident or simply determined to make it work, they will meet you half way. They need a job to do even if that is being a companion animal. In Australia heelers can be often seen guarding a tradesman’s van all day, so yes they can herd cattle but as long as they get one good walk a day and a lot of metal stimulation they’ll be ok. Very healthy, non-smelly, they shed but not horribly (apart from twice a year). They are very bossy dogs so need to be supervised around children because they will heard them into a corner if they think child is misbehaving. I had a heeler who was a stray and she loved dogs, didn’t like people much (except her family), and I had heelers who were friendly with strangers but offish with dogs. But they do love their family and are often one person dog, which means they’ll particularly bond to one person and follow them everywhere. They have an amazing sense of humour but don’t like being tricked. Honesty and open-heartedness is the way with these dogs and they’ll return it a 100 fold.

I found my first heeler at the local pound, and it was love at first sight! Because Ringo had bitten one of the staff there, at first they refused to let us adopt him, labeled him "dangerous". My 10 year old son was heartbroken, so we kept going back to visit him, every day until the day Ringo was going to be put to death. We refused to leave, and said if you are going to kill this dog, we want to be with him when he takes his last breath, because we love him. My son has these beautiful big green eyes, and I think it was his "Puss in Boots" look that won them over. They finally relented and told us we could go in a room to meet him, and then we would see what a terrible dog he was!
Yep, Ringo ran straight up to my son, who was sitting on the floor, and sat on him with that big goofy grin that says "MY human!" My son was in special ed then, he was labeled himself as "emotionally disturbed" because of trauma he endured as a toddler when he was kidnapped and missing for a year. He loves animals, doesn't trust people even now.
I met the staff member he bit, and it was all I could do not to bite her myself. What an evil witch!
We had our darling Ringo 15 years, and he was so smart and loving.
I have a weird neurological disorder called trigeminal neuralgia, which causes me to have sudden and severe stabbing pain to the right side of my face. It is especially triggered by cold wind on my face, and the best thing to do is warm my face, quickly! My BFF Ringo knew when I was about to have an attack before I did, and would whimper softly and "assume the position" because he knew mom would be crying and burying her face in his soft warm fur until the agony stopped. He would stay perfectly still but give a low growl at anyone who tried to approach (including my now ex-husband!).
We lost him 5 years ago, and although we have an amazing, beautiful, smart border collie I adore; I've still longed for another cattle dog.
Last Wednesday, I drove to our local shelter and before I had the car parked, I saw HIM! The most beautiful little blue heeler staring intently into my soul, you know, like they do. Friday, I brought him home to the Lazy I Ranch. He's getting used to the place and will need lots of training, but he bonded with me immediately on the way home.
At the shelter, he broke my heart because I'd never seen a more frightened animal in my life. He had to be carried to my car because he wouldn't walk on a leash. He just trembled, and his eyes were wild with fear. No aggression, just sheer terror. That place is pure chaos of barking and snarling, and he's a very shy quiet fellow.
I wish I could have had video of the change in him as we drove the 9 miles up the mountain to our remote off-grid ranch. He went from terrified to a grinning pup with a wiggly butt (his tail is docked, unfortunately), and licked my arm.
I had a cozy pen ready for him which he seems to like a lot. I sit on the floor with him and he is either in my lap or always has one leg on me. He still won't walk on the leash, but he stayed close to me as I took him for a short tour of the ranch. It was cut short when he saw the chickens and tried to get into their pen! Good thing I made it predator proof, or I'm sure he would have killed them. Oh well, he won't be allowed to, ever, so he will eventually learn as all our dogs have eventually.
The training will take some time, but I can see how smart he is so I'm confident he's perfect for our ranch. I hope my goats don't hurt him. The two big goats have maimed coyotes before, and he looks like a coyote to them. It's probably good that he's fearful of them for now.
He learned his name, Blaze (named after Blaze Foley) within a couple of hours. He's a velcro dog like Ringo, but he has a different personality in other ways.
If you've met one cattle dog, you've met ONE cattledog!
Never judge or assume your dog will be just like the ones you see on videos (they are all different too!). That's why it's good to watch a lot of different videos to learn about this amazing breed before getting one. They are certainly worth the effort!

When we got our heeler at 8 weeks, sadly she was covered in fleas, dirty and she had many areas of broken skin where she had scratched. She was also very fearful. It was two days before our vet would open and I could get flea med. I bathed her with baby shampoo. She was very afraid of the bath. The next day she soiled her kennel and had to be bathed again. Poor baby. Two days with new parents and attempted murder by drowning, I'm not surprised it scared her. However, thirty minutes after giving her the med from vet, fleas were falling off. It took a couple of weeks before her skin and coat were normal and of course I got oatmeal shampoo from her vet. She is now four months old, beautiful, loving and is my shadow . We have traveled five states, camped, made friends walking down streets and enjoying life on 13 acres. She is socializing very well. My concern is she hates water. She has been to lakes, mountain streams, rivers, and creeks. She goes close but won't get her feet in the water. I wasn't concerned until I just read that this is apparently unusual. Have I scarred her for life with baths? Suggestions?

I had a Red heeler/Rough Collie mix. He was heeler in every way except he had a giant lions mane and log soft hair. Happiest dog in the world but was very wary of strangers and wouldnt let anybody in the family fight with each other. He would jump and bark and separate anybody that looked hostile even if it was play fighting. Yesterday my father took him for a walk while I'm currently out of town on vacation. He was only supposed to be there for 5 days. He took him off the leash and now my dog is dead. I miss him so much.

Brooklyn Riffle I had a cattle dog that loved dogs and another that didn’t. Females will be less competitive, neutered animals will get along better, and generally speaking, cattle dogs will be ok (my most recent ACD puppy grew up with a cat) with animals from the same household. But cattle dog puppies are extremely bitey and all over the place, and dogs remain very active until at least 5-6 years of age, properly chilling out at 7-8 years old, so they aren’t sedate dogs.

These dogs need action. Don't let them get bored. You'll never find a more faithful animal than these critters.

You need a sturdy vacuum cleaner, a dust pan that will comb the hair off the broom's bristles and a lint roller in your hand bag, brief case, car, office and closet. They shed their undercoat profusely, but all of us ACD lovers don't mind. He was so out of control running around that in order to get any work done I had to bring him with me everywhere, and he learned to walk on the lead very quickly that way. Also, harness might work better than collar, if he doesn’t like a collar. Having a tasty treat in your pocket helps too.

I have 2 Border Collies and a Stubby Tail ACD! We have a medium size backyard but it’s big enough for the 3 of them. They run and play with each other all day long! Seriously all day long, but they know when I get home by the sound of my truck. I walk in and say let’s go to the park and the 3 of them jump right in the bed of my truck. Once at the park they run everywhere and meet and play with other dogs for about an hour. Remember it’s critical that they socialize with other dogs and people. If you want a healthy and happy dog, exercise them. Don’t get a Cattle Dog if you don’t have a yard, it’s not fair to the dog and if they’re bored they’ll find something to do, like chew on things in your house. Cattle Dogs are great dogs to own!

This video fails to mention the first three years are very difficult with a heeler.

This video makes it sound like you have to be active and train them to do tricks.. I am a fat old lazy man..my blue heeler lays on me all day. Her trick is following me every where. We don't take 8 mile hikes or have to stimulate her 24/7. She is the most jealous possesive dog in the world. She doesn't even like my wife kissing me. The spot next to me on the love seat is hers. I see others with multiple dogs with a heeler..I must have the crazy one cause she hates all other animals that might take my attention for one minute. She is the cure for someone who feels unloved or never important to anyone. They are the most loyal creatures on earth.

My arms have new scars along with old scars from previous pups. They all bite, but after I read about holding down the tongue while telling her "no bite", she stopped. She still likes to mouth a bit and lick with kisses. I didn't know the tickle the tongue trick. She is four months old.
