When I met my husband, I had a half Dal/half lab named Indigo who went through multiple boyfriends and cancer with me. She would lay with me on the bathroom floor and provide comfort relief and cuddle me. He had a Red Queensland Heeler (ironically) named Red Dog who was 5 years old (so was Indy) and I was worried that he wouldn't bond with me. I was wrong, he and Indy are the dogs that all dogs get compared against. He would comfort me when I had migraines, he would provide comic relief and guard me with his life. He has seizures too and finally, they were what took him. Red was 17 and Indy was 17 1/2. Indigo was special (there will never be another like her), but Red turned me into a Cattledog fan for life. Silver, I think, is the same for you. ❤💙🖤

Kina partial to Gypsy wu wu, Cleaa is the chuck-it dog and of course Sully roo roo. I so hope and pray I get my girls for even close to that much time!! My Alta will be 7 in 3 weeks, she is having a little trouble seeing the ball these days when I throw it, I have to kinda lead her direction when I throw it, seems like she follows the shadow of the ball to track it, but I'll deal with whatever comes my way with both of them. She is an awesome camper and just wants to protect me the whole time, now my wild child Ryah, she is a camping pain in the ass lol but very thankful to go. Thank you Alex for this video, very awesome!! Don't know if y'all are Browns fans or Bengals fans but go Bengals!! I'm a Steelers fan so I will root for the AFC North. Aww I hope she keeps her sight for as long as possible. I'm sure you have many more years left with Alta. I'm hoping Clea loves camping. I'm ready to go and I hope she give Gypsy some confidence during it. Sully is going to be so mad on that trip cuz he's staying home lol. Not much into football (more soccer and hockey) but yeah we would be a Bengals fan I guess. My sister is really into them and mom was watching and saying they were winning?

He was a natural as an ESD - he was essentially the reason I could deal with life. My Blue Heeler, Davida (6 1/2 years old), was his mama the day he came in that front door - and she misses him as much as I do. I started binge watching your videos, and when I got to this one, I only wished I had seen it a week earlier. I had just put down my blue heeler "Max" of 14 years. He couldn't walk very well, and had bladder issues. The vet recommended I put him down. He still had an appetite albeit for canned dog food. I can't tell you how lost and sad I was afterwards. I keep thinking I could have kept him for a little bit longer. Watching this video even reinforces that, because he had his eye site, and I could have done more to meet his needs. I'm already looking for another blue heeler, maybe even two. Thank you for these blue heeler videos.

I don't know if this will help you or not but both our boys that we said goodbye to two years ago (one was a heeler), both were still eating and drinking and going to the bathroom fine but all their other health problems is why we said goodbye. Dogs have a way of hiding pain and acting like everything is fine. I think it's their way of trying to not make us worry when we really are. I know what you are going through, we too felt we could of done more, it's completely normal to feel that way. It's never easy making those decisions. But 14 years is an amazing long life for these babies. Again I'm so sorry. RIP Max 💙

What agreat dog. I was listening and when you mentioned the weak back legs, neurological -type of issues and the incontenence with previous seizures. This is what my dog had midway through his 16th year.
He was very well trained and never went pee inside, then about late into his 16th year he peed in the house. Our dog took many vacations with us and never peed, even on longer flights or road trips. I thought it was no big issue and cleand up. We noticed he would drink tons of water, the more you put the more he drank. He would also scarf his food fast. He was 80% blind in both eyes. Then it became more frequent. We never really think of our beloved dogs getting to that old age where its an issue so I thought it was a behavior issue and began trying to train him like he was a puppy. Well he ended up going on pee pads after. I ended up getting him diapers because he could not lift his leg high enough to urinate so I would have to essentially hold his back legs as he urinated. We took him to the vet and blood tests came back normal for his age. Then we took him to a specialist who determined it was a neurological issue coupled with plain old age. He was basically unable to put on weight and was getting very thin.
We would have done anything to cure him so we went to 2 more specialists out of state to get more opinions. They had essentialy the same diagnosis, but it was unclear exactly what was causing it. I guess we wanted to hear that there was something we could do. Got to the point where when he squatted to go number 2 he would fall back. I had to hold him up a little so he could balance. Then the walks became shorter and shorter, he used to love walking 2 or 3 miles easily. Eventually he couldnt even make it 50 yards and would just sit down and sometimes lay as if saying "I want to walk , but I cant". I was devastated. I would pick him up and carry him for 2 miles just so he can experience smells and get fresh air. He deteriorated very rapidly. Got to the point where his breathing became shallow and I was checking on him several times a night, sometimes every hour even though he slept in the same room as us I was scared he would pass away while we slept. His quality of life diminished quite rapidly. 2 months before his 17th birthday we decided to ease his suffering after weeks and weeks of going back and forth and having tears about it daily. The thought of not having such a dear friend and family member around really crushed us. We knew we had to do what was best for him and so we made an appointment and had him put to sleep in his favorite spot as we held his paws and pet him and kissed him saying goodbye and that we loved him. Before we had him put to sleep we took a trip to his favorite place and sat there with him for hours until it got dark. It was heartwrenching knowing it was his last time to go there. When the day came, We took him for a final walk in the morning and held him close. It was hard. The vet came over and we sent him off with prayers and heartfelt tears. When he took his last breath it was like my heart just sunk. My beloved pal and what became a member of my family was gone. We gave him a funeral a human would be proud of and invited a couple people who knew him well and we paid our final respects to him. To this day I still think of that boy and go to tears. Dogs are some special creatures, they have a way of really bonding to your spirit. I know I will remember him until I take my last breath and hopefully be reunited with him someday. What a joy that would be to see his face again and pet him, would be the greatest gift. May God bless you and your dog with more time, I wish you both well.

    • @TheHeelerMama
      @TheHeelerMama  Год назад +1

Oh this comment got the tears rolling today. We experienced the same trying to figure out what was causing all the issues and like your pup she drank water like she was dehydrated for weeks. We even measured out water for a week to see how much was being consumed and she was drinking 15 cups if not more per day. Vet said the last thing to do is MRI but with how much those costs she said it might not even show. So we just manage with many puppy pads and new rugs. We tried diapers recently and she went into a total panic. The weight loss due to her muscles deteriorating is what concerns me the most. Thank you for sharing your story and what you went through with him. I've been having a hard time at the idea of letting go just because she's old but it's being discussed because I can see her struggle and that's the hardest part. @@TheHeelerMama Yes , its VERY difficult, the most difficult thing I have ever had to do to be honest. I would take all feasible measures possible before doing anything permanent so you wont be left thinking "what if" later.
Same with my boy, muscle mass was deteriorating and my guess was that since the muscle was deteriorated it likely put more strain on his tendons which then put strain on his ligaments since there was no muscle support, which then caused his discomfort. Its like a 90 year old person who lost majority muscle I suppose. Mobility is then an issue and they tend to sleep more.
I would say if she seems in relative comfort and the only issue is her drinking a lot and peeing it may not have become critical yet. I would always ask myself daily , "is he enjoying himself"? "Is he in pain"? "Can I ease his pain with medication" ? (Basically I would think of his quality of life) With my boy it got to the point he had almost complete disinterest in interacting with us besides a few licks here and there. Main thing I would look at is if breathing was normal, heartbeat was normal and touch around their body gently and see if anywhere causes them pain or discomfort, and if so is there anything I can do to ease it.
My guess is he distanced himself instinctually , maybe how sick animals hide weakness as a survival mechanism in the wild. The important thing is to be there if you decide to put her to sleep. Also if a vet can come over so she can be at home in a familiar non-scary place. This way she can be surrounded by love and her people and things she knows. Some people just drop them off at a vet and walk away. Breaks my heart, the animals have such loyalty the least we can do is suffer our own emotional pain in order for them to feel at ease with their people by their side in their last moments as we say goodbye sending them off with love from the heart. Such a sweeet dog she looks to be.
With my boy, my main fear was that he would have a seizure or some kind of painful ending while we were sleeping (this is why I checked on him almost compulsively). When we had vet put him to sleep it was a 2 step process, first shot relaxed him as if under anesthesia and second stopped his precious heart, he just looked as if he was sleeping. He felt no pain and only consolation I had is I gave him the best life I could and spared him pain in the end. We kissed his head and face and said a prayer for him. Dogs are special and you never forget them or stop shedding a tear as you look at old pictures of their better years, or something out of the blue will remind you of them. As time goes on I find myself crying still, but also sometimes laughing and smiling as I look back at some funny things he did, and remembering the more joyous times and the joy he brought to our lives.(strange that even in death they continue to bring joy to you) What a gift, we will always be grateful to God for. I wish you both the best and pray you have a lot more precious time together. Such a special girl you have there. I can tell you love her so much.

@@jensz9360 Oh I will be there with her in the end for sure. I am always there at the end for them. I just can't handle the thought of them being alone without mama during that. I'm always holding them and telling them how much I love them. My one cat even hugged back before she left and that about broke me. She does seem content but mobility and how much weight she has lost can cause more issues. She has senility, and teeth issues and a few other things. If I can control her peeing which is hit and miss I'm okay with waiting but we just have to keep her clean and comfy. I worry all the time a seizure is going to take her or she will injure herself. She is very stubborn with help but sometimes accepts it. I'm not sure I can say she has good days at all anymore, it's more of it's okay days. It's a process deciding and I've had to go through this with my two boys, but they were in pain and having trouble, she responds well to her pain meds and seems content even though confused half the time. I'm not going to rush into anything but I am having more days where I feel it's time. She just has no interest in anything anymore well sometimes food still lol but she doesn't always respond when we interact with her.

Man, this got me all teared, and choked up. Prior to Boise, I'd always had labs. This is my first heeler. She too, has been a gift from above.
6yrs ago I quit drinking. I'd quit before, but never put more than 2yrs together at once. This last time I quit, I almost lost in 45 days in.
We were laying there, and I had got in my head thinking "I can change things," "it'll be different this time." All the thoughts that lead us back.
I happened to glance over at Boise, and she was just staring at me with this "look." I can't describe, other than a face of hurt. Like she knew what I was thinking.
She knew, and she remembered my promise. I promised her a better life. Not that she has it bad or anything. She is more loved, and well taken care of than most children. She's been my baby girl from day one. My promise was for a better life ALL the time for both of us.
That moment, her face, it got me through those thoughts, and I haven't looked back. I owe her more than I will ever be able to give her.
I do, and don't do things based on whether she can go. She goes EVERYWHERE with me. She too, is a lover. She loves people. She's the dog of "Home Depot" as they call her.
She'll be 11 this coming August. Shed hunting season is around the corner. She loves going. She pulls her weight, and finds her share of antlers.
Anyhow, just wanted to let you know I feel your love, and feeling of knowing that special one.
    Thanks for sharing that.

    Uuugghh...this hurts my heart! 💔
Although Phoenix is the newest addition to our family (yes, we're still trying to find a home for her)...I can't even imagine going through something like this with one of our dogs. Especially my Onyxia (Nyxi)!! She is my world! She knows when I'm all worked up and comes to me to calm me and comfort me.
It just breaks my heart seeing what Silver has gone through. Dogs amazingly can handle things and that many people just couldn't. I honestly don't know if I could handle going blind! Probably not to be honest with you!!

    • @TheHeelerMama

I don't think I could handle it as well as she did. We had to go every 6 months to check eye pressures and sometimes do another test and watching them touch her eyes and put the strips in them I was always squinting and squirming. I don't know how she ever sat still for it. She's a very brave girl. Let me know if you want me to post Phoenix. She seems like such an amazing girl.

Oh ya bugger! You've gone and made me howl. I lost my cattle girl (Stumpy) on Halloween, then her husband, my English staffy on 30.12.22. I know exactly what you're saying about your soul dog. My staffy was my soul dog, but my stumpy was sooo very special to me too, so special. We had a special bond because she was deaf, there's a real tight bond that happens when they're deaf, they have to trust you so much more. And that's why she and my staffy were like an old married couple too, he was her hearing dog. I know they're both at the the Bridge, playing and mucking about and watching over me and my other dogs and cats. What a beautiful beautiful relationship you have with your girl... but that's what you get with cattle dogs... that's how they're made. Velcro dogs, your protector, your confidante, your bestie... your EVERYTHING ❤❤❤

I can see why Silver has done that with you. My dog has also done that with my husband and I. She has more intelligence than any of the other many breeds of dogs that I have ever had. The unconditional love of a special dog is beyond comprehension.

Oh, Alek, Tears flowing. Silver is so special: your protector, your heart-blessing, your soul sister with fur on. I am so grateful you made this vid to honor and acknowledge the deep connection you and Silver so clearly share. May each day be a treasure and a celebration of your love and devotion; As you deal with her "old lady" challenges, even so, may the joy of her companionship fill your heart - and hers - to overflowing. She has the best, most giving mom and she knows it! True trust is a bond that is never broken and she will live in your heart forever. You have, and will continue, to always do right by her, and she will let you know, dear. She will let you know, when she grows weary. Glad to heart the vet visit was productive. New meds are a blessing. Yet, I really believe she is living on your beautiful love and devotion - no one could love Silver more - or better - than you do. Warmest hugs, much Love, heartfelt prayers and God's best blessings, and gentle pets to Silver, with puppy-kisses from Miss Ruthie and JJ 🙏💕🙂🐕‍🦺✝️

I still believe this was one of the worst things you went through ever with one of your dogs. I could be wrong but; I’ll never forget how much hurt you were experiencing.
