Wow I did not get why anyone would be into one of these until I got my hands on one. There is so much texture and excitement in the sweeps and transitions
I wasn’t planning on getting an Edge, but it sounds so awesome and looks super fun to use. Just waiting for my Moog Mavis to sell so I can get an Edge AND still have enough money left over to get a Pro-VS too.
I truly believe that now is the best time in history for entry level synthesis. Especially at the price point and variety. I bought a Roland SH-101 for 50GBP back in the day and sure it was a bargain. But only had CV & Gate in a newly evolving MIDI world. Now look at what you can get these days. Endless opportunities.
So... back in the day... everything or "ev-re-fin" synthesizer was all through-hole construction all hand soldered and wired. With the advent of modern surface mounted electronics, the cost of production and R&D has come down substantially. So we're in a renaissance of analog synthesis. Despite living in a digital world, the human side of interfacing with digital gear still has a strong analog side to it. Your cell phone has lots of analog parts in it. Your computer still consists of tons of analog parts. So what's old is new again at price point that allows smaller vendors to compete and larger vendors to expand product lines.
Best time in history for entry level synthesis; I agree, but please, please do not support this shameless, copycat company, Behringer. It’s a disgrace, 100%.
Damn. Loved every minute of this. Well done and just simply brilliant! You know us old guys hate everything but this was just really entertaining and inspiring. The rd9 and edge brought a huge grin. Thanks and many good ones! Well played. Well played.

Looks fun, and the immediacy of the sequencer really makes me wish the Crave had one like this, with knobs! A diy project for me to attempt some day perhaps... Love the magenta color
Thanks for this. I got one, and I have just been having a blast, hunting and pecking. Now I need to figure out how it actually works. This is a great demo, for explaining some things I didn't understand. This is one of the most interesting basic synths I've ever tried. Being a guitar player, synths are mostly just a fun thing, for me. But I do want to make music, with them. Thanks, again!

Cheers. The vCA and headphones are the same (different levels perhaps) but it means you can route the VCA back into the external input for some gnarly stuff and still have the phones output for the ‘final’ output. It’s a trick people used to do in the Minimoog for more raucous feedback saturation. The ext input works in eurorack levels which are very high - so just plugging an instrument in or whatever won’t have enough power to be heard. You need to preamp a ‘normal’ signal - the 2600 has a preamp circuit specifically to do this. Don’t works with other eurorack kit and with the edge and another crave etc.
18:29 'The addition of pink is nice' It's just dawned on me, and I maybe be late to the party on this one. But is that why it's a pink paint job? It's the pink noise version of the DFAM.
theres something odd about this demo. when the res is turned up the Edge starts to self oscillate. However it doesnt do this in your patches. so when you get to 'building a beat' at around 17mins the edge doesnt act like it does in your video. there is no obvious res in the sound even though you have it almost at full (ie 4 o'clock).
This was a pre production unit I managed to get hold of, which wasn’t working quite as it should. It was only on loan. I’ve now managed to get hold of a production units and it’s more resonant. Like yours it starts self oscillation much earlier.
Bout bloody time. Great demo, had my eye on this for what seems like forever. I'm guessing it'll be Christmas by the time they're widely available. Having to pre-order neutrons these days. Meh! SC can I interest you in a transcendent 2000?
Great overview. Thanks. I'm a little confused though about how the Edge connects to a drum machine. I have a Model Cycles. If anyone knows how I connect both units I'd be a happy man..
I love the intro! It would be interesting to hear more direct comparison between Edge and DFAM, but I'm guessing there's probably not much difference to hear ;-)
Pretty sure he said there was a video coming, but he also said in the video that it's pretty much the same. Different filter and it being the curtis chip instead of the moog, but... that is probably only going to affect the color of the sound. This seems to get you 90% there for like 1/3rd the price. (plus it has midi, and that was a huge oversight from moog.)
I have a Dfam and I don't think the edge comes even close to the OG's creamy oscillators nor filter but the FM sounds really interesting and it's much more affordable so prolly a good alternative for the people that don't already own a Dfam. 👌
Funny that people that spend a sh*tload of money for a DFAM always will say that...as all the people say who own OG synths for a sh*t load of money when behringer brings out an identical clone for much less.
@@klaun The thing is probably a bit more that you are frustrated, the dfam is one of my "cheapest" Synths and I had the plan to pair the edge and the Dfam... But I'm probably going to do get one anyway, besides that I can tell my thoughts because it's MY opinion. And it's prolly worth some more cause I own a Dfam and know the sound of that badboy. It's just like the crave doesn't sound like the mother, nor the ms sounds like the sh and there's no problem with that, pretty little Synths on their own.
@@klaun Faf off mate. I've got me a Moog (Moo-g to place myself in the appropriate generation) Grandmother, and I've got me a Behringer Crave. Do you want to know which synth SOUNDS better? Do you want to know which synth/seq is easier to program, and just generally use? Do you want to know which synth just gives it up, gives me that QUALITY sound, and does it the EASIEST? It's the Moo-g, mate. Hands down, no question, no chance for the Behringer. I know they're not 1:1 like the Crave and the Edge, but I'm speaking from just a kit comparison. I like the Crave. I probably spend more time with the Crave because it is harder to get usable sounds out of it, and it's sequencer interface is garbo. You know the phenomenon where you spend more time on the things you hate, that are difficult, than the things that you like and are easy? I'm that kind of stubborn bass tard. And in this video, you could hear how the Moo-g just sounded good, at all settings, like it was more contrasty, richer, smoother, everything that makes a good sound good, the Moog was just there already. Moogs are TUNED in their Design. The Behringer gear is not tuned, it plays and sounds like just engineers put it together. You have to work harder to get the good sounds out of it. I've gotten some good sounds out of the Crave, but it was sweat that did it. And everytime I come back to it, it confounds me. Unlike the Grandmother, which is like a propa whoear, spreads them every time. I apologize for that metaphor. But you can hear it in this video, Klaun is right, the Moo-g did sound better in every instance. And yes, calmitay, I saw Starsky's other vid, comparing the sounds on the Moog vs. the Edge, and you can tweak and get very close. Not the point. The moog is always right there. In fact, the problem with the Moog is you can hit analysis paralysis, where this sounds good, and that sounds good, which is best, and then you can't tell, it all sounds good. The Behri gear, you don't have that problem, if you can get it to really make a good sound, a sound that is balanced, full, no fat, right there, you jump on it because it is rare, and it took a journey. Anyway, that is my experience with this gear. I'll snag an Edge before my nation's people are practically engaged in WWX if I can afford it, with the destabilizing thollar, and supply chain interruptions. Just wait until Taiwan goes hot, how many Edges do you think Behringer is going to be shipping? Bang Zoom, straight to the Moogn, it's over. All the best, Mate, we are blessed to have any of these devices! We're just more blessed to have the Moogs, and I hate status, hierarchy, especially purchased hierarchy, though I do endorse the MERITOCRACY. Really, I'm the most budge MF'er out here in EM production and have been for many decades. But, just give it up, the Moog IS better, sounds better, plays better. The only question, really, is it worth it for you. I bought the Grandmother at a low price, with four years of $19 monthly credit payments, no joke. I think I should be coming to an end of them like right now, maybe in November. I'm broke azz. But that Moog is a stunning piece in my collection of dull rocks. Seriously. Just playing lines on it, on the keyboard, I play better on the Moog vs my cheap and gen 1 Akai mpk49, which plays okay, it is serviceable, I've used it for 14 years... but I don't play as well on it. Seriously. I'm more creative on the Moog. I come up with better lines, and I play them better. It's not vooodoo or hoodoo, or some mental thing, the keys are just better, buttery, my mind maps to them better, effortlessly, I just get into the music, I feel it, it is pleasurable. Maybe that is it all, right there. Using the Crave is like a cheap old American car, where everything is there, a steering wheel, some pedals, four tires and an engine. But the Crave is like an American Sh!te Box, while the Moog is like a Honda from the mid 90s, like everything feels good, works well, you can literally drive the car better. The Crave is not pleasurable to use. And I'm not some fiending producer, pumping out gallons of garbo tracks just to afford my meth use. I was a pro sound designer, and speed, efficiency and sound quality were primary, which suggests the Moog, btw. But now, I'm an arty farty artist making the music I want to make, and I enjoy the pleasure of the process. Like it should be pleasurable, the art making process, it in of itself should be the reward, and with the Moog it is. With the Crave, it is like the DMV. It works, but it sucks. It's all rough edges (no pun), and as cheap as possible. I know that is what may allow me to purchase it. I'm okay with that because of my position in life. BUT, I'm not going to pretend like the Edge is better than any Moog product, because it is not. It is a Sh!te Box. I accept that. I'll use it, and make music with it. I'll do it in an ensemble with all three, the Moog Grandmother, the Behri Crave and Edge. It will be what it is, and really, it'll be my ability and inspiration (which heavily favors a Moog purchase, btw) that will determine the quality of my work. Anyways, that's my feelings and thinkings on the matter (no pun), based upon my experience. And damn, I can't stop, but Moogs were expensive before, like when I bought the Grandmother, it was expensive, it was a serious 4 year credit deal. BUT since then, prices have gone up considerably. CONSIDERABLY. And I'm not down with that. The Dfam is now like what I paid for the Grandmother, which is BS. Forget all these price increases. No body is getting pay raises that even come close to matching the thollar inflation (or deflation depending on your point of view). So everything is just getting more and more expensive, and less and less affordable, and Moog is leading that charge. And forget it. The Grandmother will be my last Moog, unless we nuke russia in a day and appropriate their natural gas and oil reserves, and the Beast System triumphs for a minute and someone as poor as me can actually afford beef and Moog again. But I really don't see that happening. Good thing my Akai AX-60 can withstand a direct nuclear strike and then be used as a bludgeoning device while still playing the most pathos drenched wobbly out of tune sentimental chords in the history of synthesis. Cheers for good this time..
As a broke person, I simply can't justify the purchase of a DFAM. It's far too niche for the cost, despite its capabilities. The Edge on the other hand is far more accessible. It will never replace my primary drum machines, but it's such a great compliment to my other semi-modular equipment. If Behringer ever replicates the Subharmonicon, my morality will be truly tested. Great video!
Freaking wicked overview…Looking forward to getting one… I had a play on a DFAM, it’s so hypnotic , this will be my budget gateway to getting in that zone… but MOOGS filter are the dogs gonads. I’ll take this roughneck version though, it’s a little nutter . 🤪 Gr8 stuff
Yup...Moog oscillators/filters really do sound great. I own lots of Behringer gear and love it all, but every time I fire up my lowly little Werkstatt, my ears perk up just a tad more than usual. There IS something more there. Dunno.
@@mikemeengs5720 Definitely Moog has got the cream and power....I have a Moog minitaur, so look forward to putting the edge through its filter . I still like the character of the edge... its literally edgy, just needs plastic surgery on the bottom end.
This EDGE is a winner, I spent a few years wanting to mix DFAM with my 32 mother unit, but I think I'm going to like this one much better, because after 4 years I see that I don't like moog sounds so much, too soft and strong . I like this filter much better and the changes it makes really give a lot of infinite variety. the FM is a great idea and the Midi is another winner. The knobs for a more correct sequencer is really what makes me decide on it, the price is great, but my problem is not money, I earn enough to buy myself a lot of things, and when money is not the problem, that is when You look more at things and what you want to have in your team. Thanks Behringer and thanks Starsky Carr for making this video possible, I love it. 👍
@@303machine Special sound? a Curtis Ladder LPF 24db sound? It seems like a Curtis Ladder filter for Moog is a magical thing... but it is built with 16 transistors and a couple of other components for less than $15. Why couldn't EDGE have that special sound that you can calibrate and customize? Well, quite contradictory and confusing, about that special sound, which not even the inventor Dr. Moog has ever reviewed or manufactured.

This was a pre production unit I managed to get hold of, which wasn’t working quite as it should. It was only on loan. I’ve now managed to get hold of a production units and it’s more resonant. Like yours it starts self oscillation much earlier.
@@StarskyCarr thanks for that clarification.
“15:00 let’s modulate… “ I want two of them!
Oh this is gonna sound great on my Tascam 424.🤖📼🛸
Thank you 🙂
30:10 Awesome sound.
If anyone knows how I connect both units I'd be a happy man..
send MIDI clock from the modal cycles and set the edge to external clock - should be super simple.
Thank you..
Just got my Edge. It was super easy. Sounds great.. Many thanks
Wow is fabolous EDGE my synt drum ,ritmic preferito
I love the intro!
It would be interesting to hear more direct comparison between Edge and DFAM, but I'm guessing there's probably not much difference to hear ;-)
Pretty sure he said there was a video coming, but he also said in the video that it's pretty much the same. Different filter and it being the curtis chip instead of the moog, but... that is probably only going to affect the color of the sound. This seems to get you 90% there for like 1/3rd the price. (plus it has midi, and that was a huge oversight from moog.)
Yeah… vs coming Sunday. And you’ve pretty much summed it up. Some cool demos in there with them together.
My finger is on the button! Nice video sir. Will be looking out for this come November - unless I snag a DFAM in the mean time 😅
This or the neutron? I have the volca Drum and korg monotribe.
Or the volca modular?
i use my rd8s trigger outs to get funky with my DFAM, give that envelope time to breathe, so the same would be applicable here.
i like the analog style sequencer. can the sequence be patched to a crave for example
Yeah just patch the outputs - super simple
@@StarskyCarr patch the “outputs”? MIDI din? 1 of the 15 patch outs? Which assign mode? What are you talking about? This needs much more clarification
Great sounds, good review, although I was hoping some details of the midi sequencing options.
I think I’ll do something extra on that. Quite a lot of folks are interested in it. I’m
@@StarskyCarr Thank you, that would be cool, looking forward to it,. Your

Is there any resource showcasing the scale knob on the Edge?
I have a Dfam and I don't think the edge comes even close to the OG's creamy oscillators nor filter but the FM sounds really interesting and it's much more affordable so prolly a good alternative for the people that don't already own a Dfam. 👌
Funny that people that spend a sh*tload of money for a DFAM always will say that...as all the people say who own OG synths for a sh*t load of money when behringer brings out an identical clone for much less.
I’ve got a Subharmonicon and, whilst I love the sequencer, the oscillators and filter are disappointing.
It's just like the crave doesn't sound like the mother, nor the ms sounds like the sh and there's no problem with that, pretty little Synths on their own.
jap moog filters are much better
Cheers for good this time..
seems like a Synare engine/architecture is available,,,,, am I seeing this correctly?
Nice one bud 😁
You are coping to much. Moog have special sound, nothing can match it. But to expensive for most of the people.
Moog has ever reviewed or manufactured.
looks like a fun machine to pair with a dfam... to my ear the filter wich kinda is the sound are not even close but that does not mean they are bad just different
Its almost worth the asking price just for the colour!!
Did you have two patterns programmed into the Crave to trigger with the Edge?
Just the one pattern. Edge was sending the clock.
an affordable box of FUN
Small thing but the knobs look loose. The Crave's knobs are top notch - are these a differing quality?
No they’re the same… this was a pre-production unit. (Hence the dealer!)
