The FIBA Asia Cup is a continental tournament that took place every four years between the men's national teams of both Asia and Oceania. The event began in 1960 as the ABC Championship, with its first edition being held in Manila, where the Philippines - then the Asian basketball powerhouses at the time - won the inaugural title at home soil. It then became known as the FIBA Asia Championship in 2005 as the Asian Basketball Confederation (ABC) gets renamed to FIBA Asia to abide with the 'One Family' branding concept introduced by FIBA in 2002.
The 27th iteration of the then-known FIBA Asia Championship took place from 1 to 11 August 2013 in Manila, Philippines. At first, the Lebanese capital Beirut was chosen to stage the tournament, and this would've been the first time that Lebanon plays host. But a car bomb blast, rising political tensions and the escalating Syrian civil war forced Beirut to relinquish the hosting honors, and FIBA decided in January 2013 to move the championship to the Philippines.
Although Iran won their third Asian title after the beating the Philippines 85-71 in the final held at the Mall of Asia Arena, a silver medal finish was significant for the hosts as they earned their berth to the FIBA Basketball World Cup - their first since 1978, doing so upon their semi-final victory over South Korea, which brought an end to the Filipinos' winless drought that lasted for 40 years.
This Asia Championship turned out to be the last edition that served as a qualifier for the FIBA Basketball World Cup (formerly the FIBA World Championship), as a qualifying window was used starting in the 2019 edition, which saw the tournament itself expand to 32 teams. - Спорт
