I own three Cyma’s 586k Cymaflex from the early 50’s all serviced over 70 years old and they all still run by chronometre standards unbelievable one of the most stunning hand wind movements !
The first time I became aware of Cyma was when I saw it on the wrist of actor George C. Scott in the movie The Hindenburg in 1975. That was a chronograph also.
Interesting! Is it shown so prominently in that classic movie? Unfortunately, a quick picture search only shows some blurry shots of the watch. Thanks for pointing that out!
Thank you very much! I am positively surprised and delighted about the amount of attention and feedback for Cyma watches! I am happy if I can add to this joy
I was given a small "cadet" CYMA when I was 7 years old. It was a very dandy golden (not real gold) child's watch of the era, the late '60s. Couriously it also ended up in a female wrist: my elder sister's. I wish I still had it 😞
Well, you could technically still get it back right? 😆 I know those, they are about 30mm in diameter, very clean 👍 Hope your elder sister enjoys the watch! A great gift from your side
That's exactly how I got into contact with thus Cyma. I just love it's looks, found out the caliber inside. Deeper appreciation and research about the brand came much later. I am happy if my video helped or entertained!
Hi I have a rare CYMA Crometre R446. The second recorder pinion driving wheel is missing and the pinion on the third wheel is broken. Do you have these parts?
Hi, I am sorry but I do not have these spare parts. I usually hunt for those on eBay etc.,if my watchmaker is unable to source the exact or similar parts. Best of luck!
I have two Cymas that I adore, one is a Watersport which is being restored atm and the other is unspecified but with dog mark on the movement. Great video btw!
There are amazing Watersport models out there. Great that you chose to restore yours! I'm curious about your unmarked one. Were you able to date it to a specific era? Is it a Cyma or Cyma Tavannes? Thanks for your comment!
@@TiMEworn I agree :) I can't wait to see how mine turns out! Sadly no, but it hasn't got a shock absorber so it must be pretty old… That's all I can tell, but it's a Cyma. Thanks for the reply! I can send you a photo of them over instagram after getting the Watersport back if you don't mind :)
Great video, thank you. Only thing more beautiful than the movement is that stunning dial. Am curious what happened to venus: who owns it, or at least the rights to the name, equipment for manufacturing , or did it just get swallowed up and renamed (like Minerva).
Thanks, great question! VENUS (or Fabrique d’Ébauches Vénus) became part of the Ebauches SA (much later: ETA) already in 1928 and as the consolidation of many brands went on, this move secured the brand, but the VENUS movements gradually disappeared, mainly replaced by Valjoux (also part of the Ebauches SA) in the 70s. This constant evolution can be seen when comparing for example the VENUS 188 with the Valjoux 7733, as some similiarities could still be found and some of these Valjoux movements were reportedly produced at a former Venus factory in Moutier as well. Last mentions therefore came up until 1982 and Venus was only manufacturing specific parts (pinions etc. under the ETA roof), but most manufacturing tools were already sold in the Seventies to Russia (Poljot) and China.
Thank you for this beautiful video. Just to let you know, we don't say "zyma" but "ssyma" with an s like snake. This is the same for "la cyme d'un arbre".
Glad you enjoyed it! Sorry for not being on point with the pronounciation: I am thankful for the advice!! My lessons in French are now already quite a few years in the past 😅
Very cool, when you can pull it off! I am often tempted by those beautiful pocket watch offerings, but I try to restraint myself as I would have a hard time of including them into my daily routine. Do you wear it on a chain? Only for special occasions or as a daily?
But not just for breitling it’s the same story with Cartier, JLC, Hermes and much more brands who don’t want to tell everybody that their famous model was a collaboration ( they put their name on a tavannes model ) with tavannes watch or a brands that was owned by tavannes watch.
I found a small ladies CYMA in a box amongst other VERY cheap quartz wrist watches at a local second-hand store today. Never heard of that brand before and had some doubts about its value. Hmmm... Maybe I'm going to pick it up tomorrow.
I stand corrected. I just watched a rerun of the Hindenburg movie. The actor George C. Scott did wear a vintage Cyma watch but it was a non-chronograph.
The only Cyma Triplex, which I know, was from the 1950s with the Cyma R.458 manual-wound movement (with a small second at 6 o'clock). To verify, you would probably need to check the movement. Triplex was Cyma's triple protection system against magnetism, dust and shock. But that last part is just an explanation I found online. Hope this helps! Thank you for your comment!
Thanks for your questions! Cyma as a brand name still exists, but the rights were sold to the Hongkong Stelux Group and the connection to it's Swiss roots is (in my opinion) practically gone. The reason for 45min counters is a bit hazy. If it's not a soccer chrono (which this Cyma definitely isn't) then it's mostly a choice based on aesthetics (60min would be more crowded on the dial) and technical aspiration (providing more than "just" the usual 30min. Hope this helps!
Tavannes watch co introduced the chronomat and let breitling use this model to their brands ( the breitling chronomat is juste a tavannes chronomat ) so yes we can say that the breitling is close to the cyma witch is the original one
Just read an article on swiss-watch-passport.ch/en/tavannes-watch-is-the-birth-father-of-the-chronomat about this following your comment. Very interesting and news to me! Thanks for sharing. Goes to show Tavannes influence on Swiss watch designs!
Hi, if it is from the 60s like mine, it does not have a battery. If it is mechanical and automatic, have you tried wearing it a bit to see if it starts up again (like an hour)? My watch is mechanical but handwound, so it needs to be wound by turning the crown clockwise while it is on the position closest to the case. If none of this works, it probably needs a service to get cleaned and maintained. If you are certain it contains a battery, those are easy and cheap to replace! If you like the watch and since it's an heirloom, I would try and get it running again! Hope I could help and thanks for the comment!
@@TiMEworn I don't know the date of its manufacture, but it does not resemble the one in the video, and there is no date engraved on it/and it has not been used for a very long time. We only keep it as a memory.
@@Fatima-wy4zi OK, best would be let a watchmaker have a look, IF you wish to make it run again. Then you could still decide if it is worth it to you (depending on the price for the repair).
That's a very good question! Everyone has their own definition give or take 10 years at least. For me and now (mid 2020s), I would consider everything before the 1985 as vintage and everything older than 20 years as neo-vintage. But I am not very strict on that definition myself, I must admit. What's your take?
@consumidorbrasileiro222 ouch 😄 as you can imagine, I strongly disagree! A 200$ well preserved Oberon or Seiko etc is as worthy of the vintage label to me as any pricier piece
