This was one of the very first episodes my parents and I watched together! We laughed so hard from start to finish. We’re Americans, but we absolutely love British comedy! It’s totally brilliant!
When I first saw this scene where Victor and Mrs. Warboys get their feet stuck and have to walk with it I nearly fell over I was laughing so hard! To this day I still laugh out loud!
These were so well made! That music that plays and the look of confusion on Victor’s face when he says “I thought we all wanted to stay here and play trivial pursuit” makes me laugh every time. Brilliant!
What I love about these series, the splendid use of music that is used. The tempo of the music used when Mr Meldew and Mrs Worboys were dragging that bag of cement
Plus ‘The Wisdom of the Witch’. Victor Meldrew may moan all the time, but he is a good person with good morals, and is almost always right! In my opinion, the world would do well with many more Victor Meldrews in it!!
Every episode of OFITG is hilarious. However, this particular one funny as hell. Which they all are. It's just having all four characters going thru this craziness together is bloody silly. And Victor ends up being a Hero at the old folks home on top of it. David was an awesome writer and his stories were awesomely good!!! The perfect television show!
Brilliant comedy never be another victor and Margaret all great cast so funny brilliant writing classic comedy series never see stuff like this anymore on TV talent
It's that odd detail that Margaret and Jean are wearing the same dress, and nobody mentions it at all (apart from Margaret's clear silent indignation) until much later in the episode. That sets this apart from anything else at the time. The Trivial Pursuit stuff is just glorious as well. We were very blessed back then, that even in its 4th series, it was still gut bustingly funny. The change of tone later on in the episode never bothered me, it's just another sign of how brilliant this show was. Got a huge amount of complaints though at the time. See? Things haven't changed that much since the early 90s... People will always complain, it's just more noticeable now because they can howl into the void of social media.
You're right about the complaints, it reminds me of when Victor himself complains about Christmas TV with Cilla Black. But to be fair, I think this show beats anything that came before it as much as whatever followed.
@SteveyTheEx-Eevee Yes, people complained about the depiction of the abuse of the elderly - without even watching the rest of the episode where those inflicting the abuse received justice. That's it really, but it was never upheld as a complaint, just a lot of hand-wringers being completely WAAAH. Totally impotent. As I said things haven't changed much. Victor is more often right than he is wrong, that's why we love him so much.
Given how viewers were willing to laugh AT Victorr, how can he be 'much-loved'? For does not the number of insults against him a indicate a form of Elder Abuse?
Man 80s and 90s are golden era of British sitcoms,Bottom,Allo Allo,You rang Milord,Black adder, Absolutely Fabulous,OFAH,Red dwarf and my favourite One foot in the grave. It's sad how today British comedy is literally dead.
26 years now. i felt victor had every reason to be angry, but his complaining style was a problem. his tongue was too sharp and cutting. he was my hero, and the way he was treated when he complained was always extreme. i could nt watch.
@@whatshisname3304 There are several sitcoms I can think of where at least one character is a "turn off", but when you think about it there are probably people in real life you see frequently that you try to avoid. Frankly, I find people who are extremely positive to be annoying.
This episode is genuinely one of two parts and where this video ends is the exact point where it rapidly changes into something much darker and sinister. Brilliant. Reminds me of the juxtaposition in the song a day in the life by the beatles. These first 15 minutes are just about as funny as it gets, the next 15 or so are as just about as dark as one foot in the grave gets.

They used a lot of material in this episode! I think this is also the one where Victor goes and gets help from a nursing home only to discover the patients are being abused. Yes, this one episode has more substance then an entire season of any American sit com to date!
That part where Victor goes to the rest home almost got this episode banned. In the run of this show it had 2 very controversial episodes, this was one. The producers were able to convince " the powers that be " at the BBC that the ending was actually a sort of public service of sorts, shining a light on bad rest homes.
I don't know which series this was, but I always thought he was originally meant to be a slightly sinister and unthinking character. It was only in much later series, when he bonded with Margaret, that he became much more sympathetic.
This was the very first episode of ONE FOOT I ever saw and I couldn't believe a "straight" situation comedy could be so full of outrageous situations. The second half of this episode, if I remember correctly from reading the Wiki page for this series, nearly caused this episode to not air.
Same, the first episode I ever saw as a child and it scarred me for years, even today when I hear about care home abuse this is the first thing I imagine. But rewatching it as an adult I realised how wickedly hilarious the other bits were, like the cement and dragging Mrs Warboys to the tree 😂
Super funny, but also super bleak, not many comedy shows could get away with combining the two. The best comedy of all time naturally manages to do it. One of the best things ever made.
Interesting fact, the retirement home staff towards the end are watching an episode of Bottom (Digger). Nick Scott who was one of the staff also guest starred in an episode of Bottom (Dough).
Unfortunately found myself and a friend and three small children in the same situation, hahaha! Thank goodness a second car came by and took me and my children back to my car and then I had to return to my friend and her two children. A night we will always remember!
A brilliant episode....and I don't know about other people, but I personally find Margaret a LOT more annoying than Victor - yes he moans, but let's face it, he's usually in the right and his heart's in the right place! And Margaret always blames him for everything that goes wrong! She moans just as much!! Why does she go nuts at walking around in a circle for two hours....she's not the one who's had to do it lugging along a bag of cement on her foot! I'm team Victor lol
@samwestonuk When Margaret was seeing another man a couple of times, she admitted that despite Victor's annoyances, she still loved him, and she ended the affair
I used to think the same but as I watched the entire series I started realising how she was just more scared of the world than Victor, and she hated how he kept dragging her into his fights with everyone else 😂
Retaliation =/= provocation. Margaret's moaning is a retaliation to Victor's moaning/carelessness/incompetance although it has to be said Victor is at times very unlucky and has to deal with incompetant people quite frequently. It is a kind of exaggerated version of what many of us have to deal with in the UK on a regular basis.
I was born in 1991 and remember this being normal, especially between neighbours as is the case in One Foot.. Nowadays even banks send e-mails addressing you by your first name, which I think is far too familiar
One of the greatest comedy series of all time. Great writing and great acting from all involved. It never ages.

When Mrs Warboys and Mr Meldrew have to walk with the cement on their legs, I lost it, one of the funniest scenes in comedy
I agree. My ribs were hurting so much from laughing 😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣

I agree, this never seems to be commented on, but I think it is superb across all the series - very descriptive and atmospheric!
This is the best EVER episode of this most brilliant comedy series, and that is a very difficult decision!!
I TOTALLY agree! It’s fabulous!
Yep, it really is a tough decision, but this episode is a definite contender.

Victor is a lovable character...I just love One Foot In The Grave!!!!
This episode is mostly very funny but when Victor discovers a care home from hell it brings out his burning sense of justice.
I saw this episode a few years back and it had me in stitches. Victor Meldrew was priceless.
Love the way he couldnt even complete his ‘i dont believe it’ when they got back to the van! Utter despair.
Magnificent episode. Dark and funny with a satisfying ending and Victor as the hero.
