June/July 2021 on Green Bay {WI} I was fishing in my 16ft Bass Tracker like i do when its calm, but I seen a big storm coming and felt the air change so I headed back roughly 5 miles south. By the end of my ride the waves were around 4ft. A few hours later the Coast Guard said they reported waves of over 10ft, largest ever recorded there and their rescue boat had to turn around. A small craft with 7 people in capsized, one fatality. Several factors there but experience on big water and hitting waves is key. I definitely got wet, but was never in danger and knew where harbors were if wasnt comfortable. I grew up fishing there 30 years ago in 12ft aluminum bench seat boats with 10hp tillers.
I have yet to take a wave over the bow of my basshawk. 18ft 9 inches but its basically a walley boat with decks. Works great for rough water. Nice video
All boat owners will run into this kinda weather in a matter of minutes. Trim it up and take your time. It doesnt matter what kind of boat you drive, this water will humble you quick
I got caught in something similar in my old Nitro Z6 when I first started boating on Lake Okeechobee. It was a long ride back to the dock but a good learning experience.
I take water just like that in my 14 ft Jon Boat with a 9.9 Merc. I have a wood plank up front for the first six feet that does shed a lot of water. If it was any rougher than what he was in I probably wouldn't make it LOL
@@yohon8977 On a lot of lakes wind direction means a lot more than wind speed. Maumelle is notorious for being rough with an east or west wind the way it's built in the mountains but I'll go without a care in the world with a big south wind because it doesn't effect it like an east, west, or even north wind. All I have is a Tracker 175txw with a 75hp and it handles the rough stuff good enough for me with careful driving. Still hard to beat my friend's Champion 196 when the waves get up.
I have been looking for a video exactly like this with an 18ft boat bass boat!! Great video to capture its capabilities!! Now I want to see this type of video with a Triton 18TRX. That is what I’m looking at buying from my research as of right now.
It’s funny how people always come on these kind of videos and say the same ol thing..... ain’t as big as Erie!!! Well Erie isn’t as big as any ocean... and crabbers fish in the worst conditions in the world so there’s that. Give me a break... Dude you made it back safe and maybe a little wet..... but you made it back.
@@Patriot-dt3wk I fished the Bering Sea for a little more than a year, to pay off my college tuition. Most miserable year of my life, but I did it. Having said that, I fished off of a 185' long liner, all the way down to a 118' crabbin' boat (THAT, was my final trip!!!! Pays well, Living HELL!). So yes, seeing a mountain of rolling water that's, according to the Captain, 45 FEET high, will make even the toughest of men have nightmares. However, the only time I ever started praying for my life, was on a 22' Champion bass boat, trying to make it back to Colville Marina, from across the Great Basin on Lake Mead, Nevada. We battled 4'-5'ers....until we had made it about half way across. The wind came to a complete stop, and it was so calm you could almost hear your heart beat. Then we got hit by what I can only describe as a microburst. The wind started hitting us straight on, at what we guess was 45 to 55 miles per hour, and 10 foot waves. I legitimately thought we were going to die.
Been there and done that I did make. The move from a 18 ft boat to a 20 ft seem to be a little softer on the spine but well done 👍 when your forced to go with the waves is tuff
Oh yeah! I try my best to stay off the water when it's blowing, but sometimes it sneaks up on you. Next boat will be a 20 or 21, but not for a few years!
Most definitely. The worst I've been in was in my buddy's z18 and it was blowing constant 35 out of the north on a north-south lake in the winter when it was around 30 degrees. That threw up some waves a little larger than this.
Try riding right knee on the seat, left leg/ foot on the deck. This will let you stand upright more and cushion the ride, saving your back in the long run. Hard to do with a hot foot tho
Funny, I thought that I was the only one that did that. Cushions it a lot and also puts you slightly higher so you have a better view of the waves as they approach.
Saw how you rode the waves a few times. I also noticed you turning to the right a few times and it smoothing out a bit. From the side views it didn't seem rough but it sure was. I'd be eyeing the shoreline going, OK, how far can my fat ass swim?
Tries to ride! The problem was with the current going downstream and the wind going upstream, the wind waves were moving very slow. To ride em you almost had to get off plane!
My last boat was an skeeter zx1775 deep v walleye boat. I actually felt like I got beat up worse in that than in the bass boat. That being said I think for the most part a deep v fiberglass should generally handle better than this

Nice going, but that is not rough. Your boat would be swallowed by Lake Ontario on a breezy day. The whole nose of my Stratos 201 EVO is submerged to the consoles when I spear a rogue wave out on that lake! Now that is scary! Cheers!
Try the pacific ocean then come back and tell us how scary the waves are. When all you see is sky, then a few seconds later, all you see is ocean.. haha. 😜

Not bad at all! The only problems I've had with it are problems I've caused. I've broken a rod locker latch and also broke a gas spring for a rod locker. Both were my fault.
The latch I broke by slamming the locker closed with it in the wrong position. The gas spring, I was in the garage and pulled the locker up from outside of the boat. I left it open so I could throw some things in it but at one point I grabbed it from the outside and put way too much weight on it
I had an 08 Z8, and now I’ve got a 20 Z20. I always tell folks they are great boats. I’m getting old, so I typically stay out of the rough waters simply because I don’t want to blow my back out. I had my Z8 for 11 years, and on average, I fish 50-60 days a year, and no issues. I’m starting my 3rd season on my Z20, and the only issues I’ve had on it was with the trailer, and then BPS didn’t rig the wiring correctly, so I had a trolling motor issue when I first got it. The trailer issue was terrible because I was about 2 hours from home, in the middle of nowhere when one of the brakes decided to lock up. That was an absolute pain because no matter what I did, I couldn’t get the brake to release. The wiring issue was due to bad rigging, and the trailer issue isn’t the boat so, overall I’ve had a very good experience with my nitros.
Running down wind is bad. You should have been quartering them and you wouldn’t have taken any. When it gets big sometimes you have to travel further to get there safely. Big is Great Lakes can’t see over the next one. Big 20ft is no better than 18ft.
