Vertex Effects hi Mason! I was curious to see what it would cost to have a board wired up by you? I have belden 9778 cable n switchcraft ends and full intentions of wiring it myself but my work schedule is hectic these days. I have the board and the layout in mind.
@@fiddlefolk I doubt he will.
Adam Smale yeah, I figured that. Thanks
@fiddlefolk - I don't offer this service for hire, just for making RUclips tutorials. I would be happy to refer you to others that actually do this for a living if you're interested. You can check out some collaborations I did with Best-Tronics, another rig building outfit on our RUclips channel.
Vertex Effects thank you Mason
I have had mismatched cheap cables that I collected over the last 20 years and never really gave them much thought. I had 20 ft cheap cables running my effects so 40ft! I was getting SO MUCH NOISE between my cheap power supply and cables. Your videos were super helpful. I replaced my instrument cable with a 15ft wbc Mogami 2524 cable, wbc Mogami 2319 patch cables and 2524 for the loop. I also got a 1 spot isolated power supply along with a furman power conditioner. I went from sounding like a buzzy humming mess to near silent. I honestly couldn’t tell much of a difference between tone, at least nothing that couldn’t be fixed by breathing on my amps EQ BUT the reduction in noise made it all worth it. Unfortunately I did all those things at the same time so I really can’t pin it down to one variable but collectively it was night and day
Great no-nonsense shootout. IT was very helpful!
Glad you dig it! Hopefully it makes an easy decision for you next time you're buying cables.
This is a great video. I own a small cable company here in NJ and this is spot-on. 👍🏼
👍👍👍
You're killing me. Just bought a belden from your store and a mogami. Seems like the two should cover most everything i need.
Yep! Belden brings the meat for the heat. Mogami brings the mids for the kids!
This episode is rig biblical! Awesome!
hahahahahaha
This cable shootout is way better than the ones currently on RUclips. Overall I actually like both the Belden and Mogami for all the tones so I think I'll make a cable with Mogamis for now since they're easier to buy. Much appreciated Mason!
Jared, thanks for watching! Glad you dug the video content. I think that Mogami is a great choice that you can get anywhere!
Jared we got the Belden for sale now in our Reverb store: reverb.com/shop/vertex-effects. I bought 1,000 feet a few weeks back and they're ready to go!
I know Dave Friedman swears by Belden, damn that guy knows what’s up! Great shootout and cool to see Justin’s guitar land! 🤘🏻
Many of the old-school rig builders do, there weren’t many alternatives back in the 80s and 90s and Belden is one of the American cable manufacturers that have been around for decades.
This is super helpful! Thank you, Mason and Justin. The characteristics of each one are super great to hear in the HD sound files. Wild how that George L just comes to life in that dirty strat set up, like a completely different cable! Thanks guys
Honestly what a great job showcasing the differences. I used to work at a high end shop and even the guys spending money on R9's and handwound Josephina's think this is snake oil 90% of the time. Thanks for doing this!
Glad you enjoyed it! Hope we earned your sub!
Interesting video. I have always soldered my own Mogami 2524 and 2319. I see why EJ would like the George L’s as he’s a strat guy that boosts a fuzz face into dirty Marshalls. His low end is right despite the insane low end a silicon fuzz face imparts. Thank you!
Thanks for watching! Hope we earned your sub!
Since I'm in the market for a new cable this really helped. I've been using Mogami 2534 microphone cables for a longtime. PRS Van Damme instrument cable for guitar. I'm right in agreement but I give the edge to Mogami. Either Beldan or Mogami you won't go wrong. I have a history with Mogami and that's the tie breaker. Very cool these are budget friendly.
I love this channel.
Glad you dig it!
I've been using Divine Noise cables as my main guitar cables from my guitar to my pedal board and from my pedal board to my amp. In my opinion they are worth every penny.
That's great. You have a reference point now that you can compare some of those we tried today and see how it holds up. The important thing is to record it and hear what it sounds like in real time playing the same thing. It removes a lot of the variables.
I've been making my own cables for about 25 years (using Mogami, Canare, Belden, Gotham, Switchcraft, Neutrik, G&H etc.) and I've purchased many assembled leads as well. Here's what I've learned:
Fidelity-wise, the point of diminishing returns for guitar cables-as with most cables-is reached very low on the price ladder.
My checklist is as follows:
✔ Good rejection of EMI/RFI
✔ Low microphonics (handling noise)
✔ Reasonably low capacitance (usually negligible at the typical 10-to-25-foot lengths we use)
✔ High-quality plugs for durable, reliable connections
✔ A soft, flexible, durable, low-memory outer jacket is a nice perk (although a big part of how a cable feels in the hand is informed by its inner construction)
Once you've got those points covered you're basically good to go.
To be sure, there are some HORRENDOUSLY bad cables out there, but these days you have to be shooting really low on AliExpress to find one.
All of the cables reviewed here exceed the basic criteria I posted, and even typical store-brand cables are often perfectly adequate, tone- and noise-wise, and fall short only in feel and durability.
Nobody nitpicks Jimi's tone at Woodstock but you can be sure that the cable he used was technically inferior to your $8.99 Guitar Center special in virtually every way we can measure.
If you have a minimally decent guitar cable and you don't like the sound coming out of your amp, before you swap the cable, try moving your head 6 inches to the left because it will almost certainly make a greater difference to what you hear.
Thanks for sharing
Diggin the Dann Huff in the background!

My head bouncing on the sound samples ✌️😎
Sweet video. Been on the hunt for good patch and pedalboard cables. Do you think the Belden world work? I know a lot of people say Mogami. I was thinking about going with the solderless Evidence stuff before I saw this vid. Thanks, dude! Love your videos.
As I said in the video these cables are only for the instrument cables to and from the pedalboard. The interconnections are a totally different thing. I would suggest Mogami 2319 as stated in the video for patch cables.
Hi Mason ! What de you think of the Ernie Ball classic cables ? Cool vid, really helpfull btw !
I think they're fine, but not as good as what we tested to my ear. A lot of this is "taste" more than "better". I tried to choose stuff that I like that is available in bulk for DIYers and also pre-made.
In this shootout Geroge L's were my favourite in all cases, really clear but punchy sound.
Perfect! Just solder them up and you're on your way!
And the key here is SOLDER! Please please please don’t go with solderless cables folks. You are asking for a disaster, especially if you are gigging. Just one cable maker’s opinion (and a musician who this happened to during a gig before I began making cables 😉)
@@vincent33195 I use mogami. And soldered AND solderless evidence cables. It works on stage ; )
Hey Mason, thank you for the video. Per your recommendation i had already ordered the mogami 2524 and got them a couple weeks ago. Yesterday i got the remaining Switchcraft plugs and will start building two boards for a customer. You’ve inspired me and your videos have been helping immensely to go through this virus phase that is forcing me to do what i can to keep it afloat. I’ll be installing a pod go as well as a boss MS-3 and a ME-5 That will complement the pod go regarding loops. I’ll try and see how this will work with the pod go as i plan to use the ME-5 for some parallel effects injecting them back into the pod go but not sure how I’m going to place them since the loops only move together as one block to save DSP processing.
Again, thank you very much.
I'm so glad. Good luck with the rig!
Great points here Mason! I will pick up some Belden
Good luck! I like it a lot but not so easy to find.
Available now Ethan: reverb.com/shop/vertex-effects. We made some!
Vertex Effects thoughts on vovox vs Belden?
Ethan Dorsett only use vovox in a studio it’s too fragile for stage.
Cool shootout! Justin might not get a George Ls cable deal now but he dont hate it at least. 🤷♂️
Hahahahaha!
I had a fender cable...my friend was using a plant wave cable. I tested my fender cable to his plant wave and I could hear a difference. The plant wave was clearer and brighter. I use plant wave now.
Thanks for the video.
Thanks for sharing! One I wish I included was the American Stage Cable from Planet Waves, a very good cable for the money!
Not to put down Planet Waves, and the one I had could be different that the one Mason mentioned, but I couldn't wait to get rid of mine. It sounded like putting wet paper towels over my speaker cone. (Not that I recommend putting wet paper towels on speaker cones) So dead and lifeless.
Vertex Effects I love the American Pro, noticeable difference and the different tip shape does make a better connection, should be the new standard ;)
@@JazzRockswithAdam the American Stage Cable is the one to get - if it wasn't that one - and there are others - it's not the same.
@@passionplayer7 not sure how that one is different than the American Stage cable, and I'm not sure about the tip either - it would be irrelevant unless the connector is designed for it as well - and each connector makes contact differently - Neutrik vs. Switchcraft for example.
I picked up a Mogomi from Rainwater Sound. I’ve been very happy and need to order a couple more 12’
They have the best deals, however I don’t see them on eBay anymore
I 'd like to know what cable Justin normally uses. Great info! Thanks!
I think it was a long coil cable - don’t know the brand and Mogami.
For me, I'll be sticking with Mogami :)
Good choice!
After messing around with lots of cables, I really liked Klotz Titanium and thought it was the end-all... But then my Neutrik right-angle silent plug broke after only 3 months, so I went on a search for another silent plug, settling on Amphenol, as it's switch seems to be much more robust.
Being lazy, I found a pre-made cable with the Amphenol silent plug on it and it happened to be Sommer Spirit LLX cable and... That demolished every cable in existence!
Mogami is a distant memory, except for buffered signals. You can probably run double the length of the Spirit LLX cable than Mogami 2524 and still come out ahead.
Unless you want your cable to act like a filter, consider this cable. It's amazing, and I don't think you can get a lower cap rating with another cable that is usable as an instrument cable.
Lots of good choices out there, ultimately it's about personal taste.
I played the Titanum for a while and changed to the Klotz Funkmaster: really good bass and sparkling upper mids. They use their owne jacks. Normally Neutrik jacks shouldnt break. (High end cables like vovox break on stage, because the have a very stiff inner core with silver. IMHO)
and I really like the xxl-spirit cable - a very huge inner core. For that price...
I use the platinum Mogami, which I thought sounds the best here. I love the smack buster fittings on the ends and the feel of the cable is luscious. Finally, the finish is exquisite, so I'm happily sticking. Thanks!
Glad you dig it! Hope we earned your sub!
I believe they are using Mogami gold... not platinum.
@@simonlynch6080 I was once- temporarily- a lot wealthier and got into audiophile stereo gear. Everybody in that genre touted Transparent audio cables. For an 8' length, I think the pair went for $10K. So I have a problem when people say they play a killer guitar and use a $4 cable. I was never sure I could hear a $9800 difference between my fancy Transparents over, say, a generic Monster cable, but I was glad I wasn't killing anything good coming from the tube amp.
I think the platinum is the 3302 which cannot be bought in bulk
I use 3368 Mogami, which I believe is equivalent to platinum...
I can see why Eric Johnson goes with the George L's. For dirty Strat sounds it sounds right. It makes the Start sound more Straty to me.
I think with Strats it works really well, I don’t like it as much with higher output pick ups or higher gain amps
agree the Mogami sounds the fullest
hi. great review and shootout! whatʻs your opinion or experience with the Canare GS6? how does that compare with this bunch? thank you!
I like them, I have some at my house but not at my show room. I think it would stack up favorably.
@@VertexEffectsInc thank you for the reply. the belden does sound good for all the configurations. have a great one!
@@VertexEffectsInc do guitar cables degrade over time? Like say more than 10yrs old?
Good to know that my cable testing methodology was not too far off. I would always plug guitar direct into an amp to see what the cable was doing first. The best sounding cable was always the one I would start with going into my pedals, so I guess I understood that portion of the signal at the very least!
Mason, ever consider doing a vid on a pedalboard build for an acoustic rig? I wonder if a cable shoot out would different results.
These results would only apply to passive pick ups in the context of an electric guitar. Most acoustic guitars have active pick ups, meaning that the cables are buffered at the Guitar side before it ever hits any effects pedals. Presumably a different cable may win, and the distortion component is probably irrelevant.
Very interesting video. Would there be a benefit to trying it double blind? I think it would interesting to try that too and see if you both agree. Personally, I really like Mogami platinum because they are solid cables and aren't too expensice (this is subjective). But, you can walk into your nearest Guitar Center with no receipt and they will replace it --no questions asked.
All the links are in the description you can download the wavs and compare yourself
@@VertexEffectsInc thanks for pointing that out, I should have seen that. Thank you!
Wow, I thought I would like the evidence the best, as normally, you get what you pay for. But I liked the Belden the best. I was surprised with the George L's. I found that I agreed that the only sound that I loved the L's with was the dirty strat.
I enjoy high mids and treble but I don't think I wasnt the cable to cut frequencies like the L's did.
Glad you dug it! We actually made some Belden 9778 cables here if you wanna check some out: reverb.com/shop/vertex-effects
My guitar to pedal board is a vertex and pedal board to amp is also a vertex
Those are Belden 9778 inside - so same as Justin's findings.
Great video, what do you think about Best Tronics CA-0446 and CA-0678? I haven't found much info on these other than the spec sheet.
Are these the instrument cable size or patch cable size? We did a follow up video to this and used one of their models.
@@VertexEffectsInc Nice, I'm checking out your patch cable test now : )
@@mikec3412 We also have another instrument cable one too with BTPA
Problem with only using capacitance is that capacitance reacts differently based on frequency. Impedance is the proper picture, or rather imp and cap, or cap and resistance. Resistance filters higher frequencies, capacitance filters lower frequencies. The Mogami has twice the capacitance from the previous two, yet has more low end. That’s why it’s not a complete picture.
I'm not sure that there's anything in this video that disqualifies this statement. Nowhere do we say that capacitance is the only variable to consider.
@@VertexEffectsInc I was in no way saying you said anything to the contrary, rather that the full picture might help illuminate the issue for people who tune in to understand cable quality.
Very interesting. For me, the tone differences between decent instrument cables haven’t been as big an issue as reliability. I have a Whirlwind cable (which now seem hard to find in the US) that I’ve been using since around 1987, but all the others instrument cables I’ve had over the years have shorted or otherwise failed. Of course, I’m assuming this varies by individual. (Maybe Whirlwind’s strain-relief helps versus how I treat my cables. 🙂) And for someone else, reliability may not be as important.
Nowadays, almost every cable manufacture has a lifetime warranty so most of this is in the concern, just go with the cable that sounds best for your rig and go forward from there
I had a Whirlwind too. It was awesome!! This RUclips post just feels like a stealth ad for Belden cables.
All of my board to amp cables inside my snakes are Mogami (and have been for years now) but I've recently in the last year moved to Best Tronics CA-0446 for guitar to board. Love the way they lay flatter and roll up easier outside of a snake...the variety of colors doesn't hurt, either. Curious to know where that cable would sit in with the 5 in this video to your ears
I like the Best Tronics ones, remind me a of the Mogami a lot but will a little more hi-end. I'm sure it would be favorable, however I didn't have one at my studio to test against these, but I do have one at home that I use all the time.
As of currently, I now use MIA Audio cables, sounds a lot more fuller than my other cable.
Nice...maybe try one of these to compare and see. It really helps when you record them side by side and listen back to the results.
Cool, maybe later down the road when I get more, then I can do the comparisons.
@@TotalEvo7 good call!
Any plans go talk about other kinds of cables like speaker cables?
Yes we do!!!
For me...German Klotz Bonamassa cable, not because it says Bonamassa. They sound better than Klotz more expensive versions and all other expensive brands I’ve tried. I gig, including festivals, rehearsals, studio and home practise using the exact same 2 cables through my original ‘57 strat to pedal board to Magnatone stereo twilighter for the past 5 years since they were new with zero issues, breaks or problems. Awesome product. Because of my guitar cable experience I use Klotz cables on my mics and PA system...all sound great and no issues!
Neil, sounds good. I'm really trying to show here that in a controlled environment, we often don't always go for what we thing we are. When we listed back to recordings in the identical setting, often, we can be more objective, especially if the cables are anonymized. We did this is Cable Shootout #2.
Vertex Effects... I thought the way you went about comparing cables excellent and the outcome super interesting. As a tone freak I was chucking in my 2 cents just in case. Keep up the great show and products
@@neilgaydon5430 Thank you sir and make sure to check out the second cable shootout we did last week, more interesting cables added to this comparison.
Vertex Effects ...I will do!!!
Gotta agree w/ the Mogami & Belden clean w/ both the Paul & the Strat, although the Evidence w/ the Strat was right there. Dirty, pretty much the same, although Belden had an edge over the Mogami. Most of my cable, both instrument & patch is Mogami, but my next order for instrument cable will be Belden. I play mostly LP & 335 style guitars through a Marshall.
I think they're all great - can't really go wrong. I think it comes down to budget and availability at the end of the day. I bought the 1000 ft. roll, so I'll be making some Belden cables and maybe selling some as well to recoup some of the costs of the roll.
@@VertexEffectsInc Yeah I liked them all, except maybe the George L, but those three were more like what I hear in my head:)
@@jbalmer9310 gotcha...they all have their place I suppose!
@@VertexEffectsInc Plus, you're the reason I switched to Mogami:)
@@jbalmer9310 they're great, no doubt!
Mmm, Mogami 2524 or Evidence is great. More flat Mogami 2524. Belden 9778 may hide certain sound band area. Middle is a little cloudy and ambiguous. 9335 is brighter than 9778. So far, I’m using Mogami 3348 or Fender Deluxe Cable. Fender Deluxe doesn’t have any noise. That’s pretty good.
Hey Mason thanks for this comparison. I was about to replace all my mismatched monster, hosa, kirlin patch and instrument cables with mogami gold. Am I wasting my money replacing all these cheap cables or would I notice a discernible difference? Should I just get a Belden to connect the guitar to my rig and leave the rest alone? Appreciate the help!
Are you talking about your instrument cables from guitar to pedalboard or pedalboard to amp or the interconnections on the pedalboard?
@@VertexEffectsInc I was going to replace everything with Mogami gold. Instrument cable from guitar to pedal board and pedal board to amp and all interconnections on the pedal board also cables for the loop. Everything I have now is cheap and mismatched. Wondering if I should go mogami gold with all cables to keep it consistent and then try the Belden from guitar to pedalboard? Is there a sonic advantage having all matching cables except for possibly the guitar to pedal board cable?
@@SavoryThymes I'd only use the Mogami Gold on the instrument cables, guitar to pedalboard, and the pedalboard to amp. The connections in between on the pedalboard don't need to be that cable - I would go with a thinner Mogami cable designed for pedalboards like our 2314 cables with Square Plug ends. We sell custom cables made to your specs and length here: www.therigdr.com. I also have a tutorial showing you how to make the very same cables yourself and the materials you'll need to do it just like we do.
@@VertexEffectsInc Thanks for the quick reply Mason. I checked out your custom cables and I think thats the way to go, they look great and you have every length imaginable. I'll be placing an order as soon as I figure out all my lengths. Appreciate the help!
@@VertexEffectsInc Is there any difference between the 2314 and 2319 cables other than diameter? Do you have a preference between the two?
Hello Mason! What do you think about Planet Waves Circuit Braker and American Stage? Thanks in advance
I like the American Stage, I don't like the circuit breaker feature. I think it would stack up favorably.
Mason - great shootout, but putting a spectrum analyzer on the master bus output would allow comparison of the frequency response to show what each cable is doing vs. just subjective hearing - but also to show what you're hearing different on each cable- or are you?
Ned, I think you’re misunderstanding the concept here. In the way that you’ve described, you’re actually not going to get a particularly accurate view of how the input cable reacts with passive pickups since the output hitting the cable would already be low impedance and not driven by passive pickups. We’ve done two different tests, on the second test it was a little bit more objective because all of the cables were anonymized. There is a limit to the number of factors that you can control if the cables always need to be driven by the guitar pick ups directly, as it is for an input cable test. If we were testing the cable environment on the pedalboard, where we are presumably already converted to low impedance, or the output cable - I agree your testing would work, but we care less about the specs and more about the sound - and what players actually choose in the conditions of a live or studio environment. This could be done with a looper pedal first in line with a low output Z and a true bypass looper with a bunch of cables in the loops to switch in/out.
@@VertexEffectsInc Mason - thanks for the reply. My concern is that like many audio cable shootouts, there's inherent bias towards some cables, good and bad. By having the frequency response as well, you can see what you like in the cable tonality - it's brighter at 4K for instance - or understand that with confirmation bias, if you already like Mogami and bolden, they may come out on top. Think of it as a way to help show why you like a cable with facts vs. just descriptions. And if the frequency response doesn't show any difference, is there a real difference between the cables? I know that I think a certain cable sounds better; just interested to see how it plays out. Don't get me wrong - this was a great video and super instructive; just a suggestion to make it better for future shootouts, and to educate guitarists on what frequencies they're hearing they like or dislike.
@@VertexEffectsInc Separately, would love to see a video of how you solder connectors to George L's cable as to a newbie seems harder to solder than other cable.
I recently built some Sommer Spirit LLX cables, which are extremely low capacitance (just 52pF per meter). Still deciding if I like them alone in front of the amp, as they offer some real Hi-Fi harmonics and textures but sound a little bright though.
However, they really complement with my crowded pedalboard (10 foot before, and 15 foot after it)
Interestingly enough, on the input of the board, most players seem to prefer higher capacitance cables, but on the board itself, with good quality buffering, the patch cables matter way less, brand to brand so long as the capacitance doesn't get too high. Same goes for the output cable going back to the amplifier.
@@VertexEffectsInc I've got one electrical question here. Do higher capacitance cables make buffers work harder? With that said, is it right to say that higher capacitance will make the buffer colour the signal more than lower capacitance cables?
@@gonzalozech on the input the buffer isn't in the equation, so it doesn't matter in that sense on how it impacts the buffer. Go for the one you like the sound of best through your rig on the input and use that. Once you're on the board, ideally the lower capacitance (to a point) the better. Anything below about 50 pF per foot is going to respond about the same with very little differences. The only differences you'll hear (with all pedals in bypass) would be attributed to the quality of the buffer and its line driving capability. Some bad buffers will become unstable the more capacitance it sees on the output. Like the Boss buffers for example that have a 1K output impedance. For the high quality buffers like what we have in our Boost or the Mesa Boogie High Wire, you can have 100ft. of cable after it with little to no difference.
@@VertexEffectsInc Thanks in advance, I just realized I can't keep on using my ts-9's buffer 😂. I guess adding another buffer will make it work less as I don't have the true bypass mod on it.
What do you think of the Bonafide buffer of TC-Electronics that comes inside the Polytune 3?
@@VertexEffectsInc that's interesting - I also prefer pF/m 80 more than 52. Thought I 'm the only guy, because I play clean sounds (acoustic and archtop) and most people use fuzz and distortion : ))

There’s one for Eveyone I’m sure. Glad you dig the shootout!
I have a custom cable Mogami 2524 but as I test it in my DAW I do not hear much difference
I've been to two recording studios now that both agree that the 20 foot $20 Guitar Center cables are some of the most reliable, best sounding cables. I tend to agree from my experience.

I currently use Mogami cable from my amp to pedalboard and another Mogami cable from pedalboard to Guitar. Do you recommend purchasing my favourite cable(Belden) for the pedalboard and amp only? Or to purchase two cables to cover both amp guitar and pedalboard?
I like Mogami out of the pedalboard and to the effects loop if you have one, it's a little more neutral and less color and lower capacitance. If you're going to use the Belden, I think using it first is best, from guitar to pedalboard.

off topic: I'm actually testing a lot of trs-cables for dual-source-guitar-pickups. For magnet/mic and Magnet/piezzo. There are only Microphone cables for that purpose available - no guitar cables, which is problematic.. I've tried cables with pF/m 60 to 80. The only one that doesnt sound dulll is the Mogami 3106 (TRS with two seperated shielded cables, welded together. pF/m 80). For "normal" TS guitar-cables I like a big (!) inner conducter with extra shielding - and pF/m 80. Like the Klotz Funkmaster (I've tried pF/m down to 52 but I like 80). For me cables, guitar picks, strings - it's like using EQ. You shape the sound. IMHO
You're going to need a Twisted Pair Shielded for sure, I like the Belden 8412 a lot, also there's the Mogami 2552 and also a larger version (forget the model) that Steen Skrydstrup uses.

@@VertexEffectsInc Hi, did you hear of "connectrix" cables, with 3 conductors (also the ground is a single wire)? Do you know where I can get it?
I use the fender coil cable. It seems to be good for me
Cool, you will notice a big difference if you go for one of the more low capacitance options I listed, not necessarily better or worse - but it will change the tone a lot compared to the coil cable.
I am definitely going to try what you recommend for sure! I do have a question and maybe you could help. I don’t have social media is there a way I can get a hold of you?
Gianni Cinelli though they website
Coily cables seem to always dampen the guitar sound a bit. But that is handy in some situations like with my practice amp with an 8 inch speaker. So far I like the Pig Hog cables but I just wont send an unbuffered signal more than 12 feet to my board. I'll go wireless if we get bigger stages. Of all the reverb pedals I've tried (in buffered Bypass) for driving the 20 foot cables back to the rig has been my Hardwire Supernatural. The Hardwire reverb pedals have gone up in price, I'll bet I'm not the only one to notice. Noticeable by a lot + great sounding verb.
Coil cables have a place for sure, especially if you want to roll off a bunch of high end since it pretty much doubles your capacitance - a 10ft. cable is more like a 20ft.
@@VertexEffectsInc Yeah, I was going to say it at least double or almost triples the capacitance.
@@JazzRockswithAdam depends on the coiling technique that is used, but at the least doubles the length.

What are your thoughts on George Ls on a Pedalboard.I play tele,335 and Les Paul thru.
I would only use them as raw cable that I would in tern solder to a high quality connector. The solderless cables are not a professional solution nor a reliable one. You can see other videos on why this is true on our channel.
whats the best cables for a Stratocaster into classic tube amps? I like to try and get the hugest Hendrix SRV type tones, that is my goal to do so, but I also like tons of variety of songs and tones.. I hate the words "genre'" and "brand" So what would you recommend?
It's all pretty subjective...not a "one size fits all" but rather a matter of taste.
Get a vintage fender bassman and a super reverb and a nice vintage spec strat add wah/fuzz/univibe/ts9
And wack away

Vertex Effects ok awesome thanks!
Used georgel solderless cables. The 155 gave a lot of problems , i think due to corrision of the lead cable. Measured it. Not good. Use solderless cables!
I have a question. I tend to use a cable for the strat and tele, but I tend to use wireless for the Les Paul. I can't even really remember why anymore. But the question is: I just opened up my old Dunlop Crybaby and got it running again after like 8 years of being broken. So, wireless is buffered, right? Does that mean I have to use the cable if I'm not bypassing the wah? The wah is first, so I can just skip it and go into the Blues Driver if I don't need wah. But it would be easier if I could just plug everything in. So, no wireless anymore? Or am I wrong about that?
I don’t think I understand your question
@@VertexEffectsInc I just got my old wah pedal up and running again. I was told that putting a buffer in front of a wah changed the way it reacted to your pickups. I use a really old Dunlop Crybaby, no telling how old but old. I have tried looking up whether my Cuvave wireless is buffered or not, but I can't find that information. I assume it must be though because of what it is. If that is the case, do I need to stop using the wireless in front of the Crybaby? I like the wireless because I can't seem to stop walking in circles involuntarily while I play which bunches up a cable, however the wireless doesn't fit well into the front-mounted input jack on a Strat, so I do use a cable for that. So my question is whether a) I'm wrong that wireless is buffered, or b) I'm wrong that a Crybaby, just like an old fuzz (I use a Ram's Head Big Muff, so apparently I don't have to worry about it?) or a treble booster, doesn't like seeing a buffer on its input? Sorry I'm so wordy, I know it's confusing. That's just how I talk.
@@CraigFlowersMusic the wireless is the same as putting a buffer into your rig and into your wah. Ideally you'd want to go corded and have a buffer on the pedalboard after the impedance sensitive stuff, or get a wah that's more impervious to the buffers on the input of the system.
What do you think about Sinasoid cables? Josh Smith loves these..
My understanding - which could be outdated - was that they assemble cables from other manufacturers. I tried to stay with cables that were pretty much universally available either pre-made or in bulk for DIYers.
@@VertexEffectsInc Thanks Mason...I'll check that out....I'm gonna give them a call
Hey guys, just wondering where I can buy soldered George L's cables or do I need to solder them myself?
You have to DIY it
Coil cables add more capacitance and also inductance. If you look at Jimi Hendrix coil cables live at rainbow bridge he is using extra long coil cables in a rats nest which EE engineers would ask why. Roger Mayer said that they used very long coil cables to add capacitance to make the wah, fuzz face, Octavia, univibe output circuits to be very unstable. If you look at Hendrix very long coil cables at rainbow bridge its just doesn't make sense to be using all these very long coil cables and just thrown everywhere with no dressing of the cables. It was to make the pedals output circuits unstable and create oscillations and other noises by adding more capacitance & inductance and resistance from the coil cables which is loading the guitar pedals output circuits.
I'm sure it also helped tame down the brightness of those old Marshall amps!
@@VertexEffectsInc True, he was using marshall superlead which has more gain and brightness they have a very edgy tone that is why Jimmy page used superleads also.
@@waynegram8907 They're great amps, I have one...you almost need Greenbacks too to calm it down.
@@VertexEffectsInc yes I think the main difference is the output transformer and the plate voltages are higher compared to the plexi. I'm not sure if Hendrix Or Jimmy page used Greenbacks
@@VertexEffectsInc you have to use an SPL meter to calibrate the SPL level of your speaker cabinet. The SPL level and dB levels of your speakers. Have you done this?
What about Sommer? Not available in the US? I was considering getting some Sommer cables

@@philippgrunert8776 Maybe the George L's might be the move. They definitely had the most treble.
hi, im a noob. i dont see a point y bother using good cable for your input if the last or next cable gonna ruin your tone/eq anyway. or did i get it wrong?
Your last cable is at least being driven by a lower output signal that your passive guitar pickups are putting out. Even a normal pedal output impedance a 1K is way better than what any pickup will be able to drive in terms of cable capacitance.
This
The guitar isn’t “powered”
The 9v-18v in pedals adds to the signal lessening the loss from cable so it matters less that then one from your guitar
I've spent a small fortune on Mogami Gold patch cables. FML
Think of how much you'd save if you did it DIY!
Vertex Effects But, but, I don’t wanna think about that 😦
How relevant is this to BASS plugging straight into the amp?
I would suspect there would be some differences, in particular with active basses.
To me the evidence ruled. More harmonic detail & richness. The belden compressed that slighty. All the others were between those 2 with the mogami closest to the evidence.
Time to put the cork away stop sniffing & pull my trousers back up.
Cool.
@@VertexEffectsInc Coming from an audio background myself I understand the significance. Especially in hot rodding phono stages where you are dealing with signal amplification of less than a milli volt for low output moving coil phono cartiges & EVERYTHING matters if you want true high resolution audio. BTW you had any experience with Klotz guitar leads?
Same here. I bought them because of what I heard live in person and it shows here too. More "3-D" but pricey and stiff are the downsides...
The reason I went with Klotz was a more utilitarian one. It featured what I consider the best built & designed durable shorting ring. And I couldn't find a plug with that feature to buy locally So if I have to change bass or worse I fuck up live & trip over the cable & it pulls out. I dont make it FAR worse by the Humm.. & Buzzz that advertises your shame & embarrassment to the world like flashing neon billboard on a dark night.
That's not happened as yet and I pray it never EVER does. But if a shorting ring wasn't a consideration I would have soldered my own custom cables. Vertex shows you how on youtube if you're no solder monkey. And that is the best. You save a fair heap of money. You are not hog tied to the standard lengths offered by manufacturers & or local sellers. It makes cable sniffing affordable & thus more interesting and enjoyable. That becomes important as cable length increases. Because both cable capacitance & reistance increase to the extent of being clearly audible. Thats where solder skills can save you big time and improve the quality of the materials to whatever extent YOU decide.
Or..... just go wireless and never have to bother with any of this ever again 🤩

So far, the Evidence cable is the most..."clear?" Transparent? Whatever. Where as in comparison, the Mogami sounds "round." All subjective descriptions of course. Clear might not necessarily be what you want, especially if you're playing distorted tones most of the time. And the Belden seems to sit right in the middle of that. Maybe EJ like the George L because it rolls off the low end and suits his set up. I think any of the top 3 for me Belden, Mogami, and Evidence are all great buying decisions. If you're on a budget, get the cheapest of the three.
For Clean sounds, I liked the Evidence with the humbuckers and Belden with the single coils.
Only exception I would say is you actually do want “clarity”, not harshness, because signal clarity/strength enhances feel and touch responsiveness. You just need to try a very low capacitance silver cable that isn’t harsh sounding or “too clear”. Check out the SweetFats Low Cap. Www.colossalcable.com
ColossalCable I guess what I was trying to say is clarity can mean different things to different people. As a jazz player, to me, clarity means hearing every note in a complex chord. With both a little grit and clean. I love my mids to be very prominent. And, I’m not disagreeing with you at all.

You can do it, I put the wav files in the description
The differences are so slight, and negligible, no one will notice in an actual musical situation, and these differences can easily be mimicked with tiny adjustments to eq. It's not like the difference between guitars, with this it's that no one listening to live or recorded music will be able to name the brand of cable being used. Not exactly the same thing as adding capacitance on the input of the system, nor do most EQ's cover that much ground in the guitar range, at best 2/3 of the bands are really guitar oriented as most speakers don't produce much over 5K.
To get good sound don't use a speaker cable for your guitar cable. I bought a speaker cable by accident, thinking I had grabbed a guitar cable. I couldn't understand why that cable hummed so loud, until I took the plug apart to check the shielding 😀
That can happen ;)

You’re totally missing out by not including Colossal Cables. They’re better than all the other brands that were compared. And we have different types of cables for different rigs.
Hi there Colossal Cable, the intent here was to show a sampling of cables and give folks the tools and understanding how to evaluate their own cables based on an understanding of the impact that the input cables have shaping the tone of the rig. Presumably, your customers could evaluate their input cables against some of the others they may have to see what they preferred overall with high gain and low gain and different guitars, as I did with Justin. This wasn't an exhaustive list of cable manufacturers, but a solid sample size of some of the more common brands out there that can be purchased in bulk (for DIYers) and pre-made. With cables, I've always found it to be a matter of taste, rather than "BEST" in this context especially with a cable being driven by a passive pickup only. Each person has their preferred EQ that they want to exaggerate, and this will be guitar and amp dependent as well as you know. Conversely, we did pick a "winner" in the shootout, which doesn't exactly stay true to the "matter of taste" idea - however for Justin's rig this is what worked best within the context of the cables we chose.
@@VertexEffectsInc I totally get it, Colossal Cables are high end, pre-made cables to exact lengths so not really for DIYers unless they want ultra-high quality/durability and a lifetime guarantee - and sonic profile is a matter of taste, in the end - but I'll add a caviat -
There really is no match for an amp at it's resonant sweet spot being hit with the truest representation of the pickups into the front end, period. With a cable that doesn't have "as good" sonic properties, a lot of players end up altering the EQ/gain on the amp to compensate for the loss of definition... which is the opposite of dynamic touch response. But to each his own.
@@VertexEffectsInc Basically, the cable should work for you, sonically, not against you. This is why I recommend every strat and tele player out there to try a high-end silver cable, just once. Personally, I switch back and forth.
@@VertexEffectsInc The real test of cables is to match the eq sonically (within the gear itself) for each cable and see what that does to how the guitar feels and how the gear responds to the signal. Any cable can be "EQ'd" to sound almost indistinguishably similar... but they will feel different under your fingers.
