I saw the young lady screaming over the body of her friend amid the smoke and blood. A few weeks later, CSNY recorded and released one of the most powerful songs ever recorded. In 1970 we were so angry. How could this happen right here in America?
Unfortunately when you are inside the belly of the beast everyone else is the problem. Humanity must endure the subjugation of the USA. Either they will go with minimal drama or the USA will bring the world down with them.
I'm Canadian and losing Crosby breaks my heart . I remember Kent State on the news in real time . He was more than a folk singer . Seeing Jason Isbell and hearing them embrace this song brought a tear to this old mans eye .Thank you for posting .Respect .
Agreed. These knuckleheads who yell "shut up and Play" at Springsteen and Mellencamp, when they play their "enlightened" songs should be ashamed of themselves. I've had to put up with that Lee Greenwood shit for fifty years, so you can park it while David Crosby and Jason Isbell weigh-in for the good guys.
Neil Young wrote this after seeing it on television. Took his guitar, went to the woods by himself. Came back to join Crosby. David called Nash and had him book the studio, engineer, and tape. Although Teach Your Children was climbing up the charts; they insisted on releasing OHIO immediately. But.... you're right Crosby was a genius songwriter.
I remember when they were killed,I was discharged that year from the military and the country was upside down with all goings on of war, racism, hatred, and senseless murder.Sad to say it is the same today 53 years later. We need lots of prayers and love to make this world better.
I’m right there with you . . this was a chilling song then and it hasn’t lost its impact after a half century ffs! Rabid right wing politics and corporate corruption are somehow thriving to this very day.
Isbell and his bandmates are so young, yet they obviously "get it." Those guitar solos reflect the pain and fear and frustration expressed in the lyrics with great power. Amen!

I love to see the Young take on these important songs and carry that banner cause things are not getting better. Continue to Fight the Good Fight and do whats right. So great! Made me think, that I've heard a lot about Jason Isbell as a song writer and singer but I think some underestimate how great of a guitar player he is.

True story. I’m at Ft. Dix’ NJ on my very first day of Army basic training. It’s July of 1970, about 2 months after Kent State. Our company has fallen into formation in front of the barracks. It’s 6AM and we’re waiting for the First Sergeant to arrive
Love seeing world class musicians have a GREAT time. Croz knows these guys have jammed on this song somewhere along their apprenticeship as the leads just SMOKE
Absolutely awesome! Gonna miss David for sure forever, a voice to be respected for a lot of us for sure, who spoke the truth. Sorry I'm just seeing this, but I'm sure glad I did. Props to him and Jason and all involved. Moved me!
We are all a little less now that David Crosby has left us. He had a complicated life for sure. I wish Jason Isbell and the 400 Init would put out a compilation of iconic songs like this one. They play Allman Brothers songs that inspire. This song was awesome. I will listen to this one often.
I’ve been a fan of Crosby for 54 years - ever since the first CSN album. I think I’ve seen him/them every time he/they came to the UK. Like most of us, he was a complex character - I never quite equated how he worked for peace yet loved guns - and I’m sure not an easy person to be in a band with. At 81, he had a decent innings - perhaps longer than his past life was likely to mean. So, like all of us, he’s gone but, unlike most of us, he leaves a legacy that will endure. That, and the love of a family aren’t the worst things to have to pass on with.
David Crosby was an admitted complicated person with many issues. But when he sings, no screams, how many more. you can't deny his passion. He presented the issue to Neil Young and Neil banged out the song quickly, brought CSNY together, who else to do this, The song and release were done in record time.
This song was so powerful to David Crosby……even though Neil wrote it, David shed most of the tears. RIP David, the angels are harmonizing in perfect key these days with you now.
And let us never forget the four; Jeff Miller (20), Allison Krause (19), Will Schroeder (19) and Sandra Scheuer (20). May 4, 1970.

I went to Canada then, and recall the way the looters stalked and persecuted Crosby. It was impressive how stirred up they got over just one musician.
It's amazing how the world doesn't change and how relevant this is today. So grateful for the truth tellers.
Jason playing a Neil-style lead and Croz laughing in glee, all while delivering a social message. That's what music should be about...
Typical 400 Unit - and similar to what happened when Jason was in DBT - he and Sadler traded lead.
It's a good lead, but in my mind's ear Neil's version had an angrier bite to it. Could have been the immediacy of the tragedy.
