How are you Zara and Julius? The thing I like about what you have said is that "culture shocks" you are experiencing in my native Uganda show us what we need to do to clean up our act. It takes people like you from abroad to let us know what we are doing well and what we are not or what needs to be done to make life better. We often take our way of life for granted, without realising that we may not be doing what is right. Thank you for your observation.

I stayed in Ethiopia for 3mos may-Aug of 2023. And had such a wonderful experience with the police their. I would pay for them to get their boots shined. Something that would never happen here in the USA.
As ugandan all you mentioned r true. Just get Ugandan friend to shop with b'cos they will charge you according to appearance...But challenge lies b'cos of u keep, they will take it for success and do it AGAIN.
In uganda everything is communal, you have to learn to associate, make freinds with your neighbours, because its the culture. people are always willing to help a stranger.

Yes....the lying is a problem. It seems to be a part of the culture across Africa. My family has often seen in certain malls...one has to pay to use the restroom. What!? Unreal.Yes... a meet you in 20 mins will extend to a wait of 2 hrs. Lol. The bowing and the overservicing of certain jobs "gas pumping " or "immigration consultants" vs hiring an actual immigration officer was a bit strange for me also. All in all..as time goes your family will learn to adjust accordingly. Thanks for sharing.

No, but now that you mention it I bet the local market bathrooms are from a horror film.
Instead of negotiating, pretend to go to the next vendor, and if the vendor quotes you a price you don't like, tell them the last vendor was cheaper and pretend to walk away. Usually, the vendor would lower the price. As to lying, you are dealing with human beings and it is universal. I see a lot of it with local contractors and as a military wife, I saw a lot of it in Europe-- GIs would buy cigarettes and booze from the PX for their local 'friends' and then inflate the price. It was cheaper than on the local market but it was still lying.

Interesting perspective guys. (1) Rest assured that every Ugandan hates the service at the restaurants. (2) White lies are common place and no one takes it to heart. (3) Gestures of gratitude are culturally ingrained , however small or big (4) Commission i.e, taking cut of the modus operandi, what we ultimately want is the product or service sought to be of a higher quality. Its a tacit agreement which is recognised by every Ugandan. Put differently if the market price of product X is $2 and someone is able to secure it for $1.20 without cutting corners on quality take it and run. Literally everyone does business that way. (5) Boda Boda have loved and hated in equal measure 😂 (6) Truth be told our cuisines are unremarkable and the seasoning is minimal at best, just like I like it. Ps I'm no foodies, so go figure. I could eat cardboard with ketchup for all i care. 😅. Hair cuts, beard shave and scrub up generally no more than $2. Good luck folks, you're just the sort of people we need. Well heeled and well spoken, the less ghetto folks we attract, the better. Shalom!!!
The word "taxi" means something different in Uganda than in the US. In Uganda a taxi is usually a minibus that runs a fixed route and has numerous passengers. If you want a private vehicle that takes you to a prearranged location, that is called a "hire car".

It's not only ugandans ,pretty much in all black African countries. Lying is not as bad as it is in the USA, most especially in a relationship . My first western girlfriend I loved when I first arrived in North America, she broke up with me because I lied to her one day that I traveled to a nearby town for 1 day while in actuality I was still in the city assisting my oncle to get a new apartment 😂😂😂.

It’s not nice. But like it’s so bad that it’s funny. Like you’re seating in a matatu and you’re just leaving down town. Someone recieves a call and they tell the person on the phone “ hey am in intinda now, give me 15-30 mins max” yet he knows he won’t be there in time due to traffic jam minimum 1 hour. Everyone in the matatu knows he’s lying 😂😂😂 but people are so shameless bae they all do it so no one judges that behavior. It’s part of Ugandan culture like people don’t even get pissed it’s like you know the person maybe on time or extremely late 🤷♀️ 😂😂😂😂
