  • Please read.
Ok, this is a very important song to my family and I =).
    Loch means lake.
So the pictures in the backround are pictures of Loch Lomond
Ben Lomond is the mountain beside Loch Lomond.
By the way, at: 3:00 there is a Gaelic bit that goes like this:
    Ho, ho mo leannan
    Ho mo leannan bhoidheach
    that means:
    Oh, oh my sweetheart,
Oh my sweetheart beautiful/ beautiful sweetheart
By the way, this vid is a bit cheesy and if you don't like Scotland don't watch!.....no harsh comments, thx. Enjoy =)
Artist: Runrig ft. the Tartan army
    .
By yon bonnie banks and by yon bonnie braes,
Where the sun shines on Loch Lomond.
Where me and my true love spent many days
On the banks of Loch Lomond.
T'was there that we parted in yon shady glen,
On the steep sides of Ben Lomond.
Where the broken heart knows no second spring,
Resigned we must be while we're parting.
You'll take the high road and I'll take the low road,
And I'll be in Scotland afore you.
Where me and my true love will never meet again,
On the bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond.
    Ho, ho mo leannan
    Ho mo leannan bhoidheach
    (repeat x 8)
You'll take the high road and I'll take the low road,
And I'll be in Scotland afore ye.
Where me and my true love will never meet again,
On the bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond.
You'll take the high road and I'll take the low road,
And I'll be in Scotland afore you.
Where me and my true love will never meet again,
On the bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond.
You'll take the high road and I'll take the low road,
And I'll be in Scotland afore you.
Where me and my true love will never meet again,
On the bonnie bonnie banks of Loch Lomond.
You'll take the high road and I'll take the low road,
And I'll be in Scotland afore you.
Where me and my true love will never meet again,
On the bonnie bonnie banks of Loch Lomond.
    On bonnie, bonnie banks
    repeat x 9

When I, as a small boy, heard Loch Lomond for the first time, I swore, that one day I'd sing this beautiful song on the very banks of the Loch.
30 odd years later, I did it! - and I must state, that no animals were hurt during my singing!

Saor Alba Gu Brath! Battle of Colloden made them more proud so they refused to stop wearing kilts. Kirkan O' Tartan festivals started as act of protest/ freedom & unconquerable souls like the poem Invictus by Willam Earnest Henley, William Wallace etc. Scotland is Gradh Geal Mo Cridhe,
( even though I have not even been to my ancestral homeland yet like my sister has, my Scotch blood always yearning to see purple heather on the moors, green Highlands, lochs, sea. Maybe I'm a Selke, I long for the sea like Dulaman. Scotland has always called me. ), of course after Jesus , who is TRULY Mo Ghille Mear & homeland inheritance with Him in heaven. 💯💢💥❤🧡💛💚💙💜💞🙏🙏🙏💪🙌🙌🤲🤲.
Unlike the Irish , I think it so awesome how Scottish people refused to stop speaking their native language. Almost all especially younger generation are fluent in Gaelic. Only small percentage of Irish speak it, but there is big movement now to restore it now before it's lost entirely.

The high road was the normal road, while the low road was the one they used to carry the coffins of the dead.So there is a profound meaning in this song. It means he has died and will take the low road and be in Scotland before the living.

I am a 69y old Chinese, become a Oz more than half of my life.
First time heard this song, was in 1980s. Because my husband sang it all the time in Chinese😇 he knew it from his old brother. During cultural revolution, we didn't know any music from the West. So we loved this song very much.
Now both them passed away, now I am keep singing this song and in English 😃

This brought a tear to my eye, My they rest in peace. It is a song that is often used at parties but the real meaning of the song is meant for warriors fighting oppression and passing on trying to escape captivity so I guess it fits your situation better than it does us today. We couldn't be prouder for it to be used as a message of freedom by people around the world.

Many commentators when referring to this song seem to believe it is about Scottish independence but it is not and it is worth remembering that the referendum was not held to decide whether or not Scotland was or is a country .That was decided once and for all at the battle of Bannockburn .The referendum concerned whether or not Scotland should leave the UK .Neither country ,Scotland or England stopped being countries with the act of union. That is why it was possible to hold a referendum in Scotland and why it will be possible to hold another if the 'vow' is not honoured .

I love all the cultures and people of Europe, but hate the political EU system, which is no different to what Napoleon or Hitler tried to impose on Europe and many people, including the British, died in order to prevent them.

Now and then (not often) I need to remind myself why I love Scotland so much; her lands, her people and her music. Always makes me shed a tear at the honour life has given me in a clan name - we are birds of paradise; 5 million Scots in a world of 8 billion souls. Take a walk in those hills and admit to yourself that you are a king on the Earth. Alba gu bràth!

Didn't know about my Scottish blood(Beatty, MacDonald et al) when I was stationed at RAF Mildenhall in England back in the '70s.
Now too old and broken to visit.
    Godspeed to my distant relatives.

thanks for this I'm a Canadian. I'm the son of Scottish immigrants and whenever I hear this it reminds me of my childhood, when all the Scottish people in town would come over and get pisshed. It makes me heart sick for Scotland.

Dundee and Glasgow are YES cities, that a given. Just need everywhere else to catch up and IndyRef2 could be a game changer for our country. Roll on independence!

Ryan Harvey Insulted by a American? May I ask why? I don't want to be rude, but it's very curious, why did he insulted your and yours culture.
