In India we don't stay with our parents because we're dependent on them. Its actually the reverse. They took care of you as a kid when you were helpless. Now its your turn to look after them. As they are turning old and also ill. Roles will be reversed now. You are the parent to your parent now as they need your care and companionship.

The best part about having someone older still living with you is also that the experience and wisdom can be passed down in the family. The grandchildren learn morals and ethics naturally, under the watchful, patient and loving eyes of their grandparents. That’s not something that can be taught in school.

Asking someone if they live with their parents is ofensive because by posing that question you are seeking a confirmation not information. By asking that question he was mocking her culture by his ignorance.

He is entitled to his ignorance, it is our choice if we want to watch it or understand where he comes from. Especially since it is genuine ignorance which is open to change (as it is in his case). And anyway, as the outsiders, the responsibility to change their perceptions is ours, that is just basic human nature. Changing a persons perceptions through your actions rather than through your expectations lasts much longer and is much more genuine. Complaining, bitching and whining will only change that person superfluously while still leaving him harboring all the same perceptions they always had. We are too sensitive to "white" peoples' judgment of us, it is like we have given responsibility of our emotions to them.

Aish already had a big career before this.
David was very condescending, and disrespectful with his questions. If he was a good host he would have done a good research and educate the audience with his questions, but he decides to ask her and then let her explain people. It’s also fine if he was not condescending.

Aishwarya has these a lot ... A LOT of interviews where the interviewers only and mostly focus on questions about her Beauty , Modelling and.... beauty and Modelling.....which is actually boring ... and she has to repeat same things ..... but their are some rare interviews where the host has done proper research or the host is curiously quite and just listen to her speak, when they don't have any proper content to frame questions.
This lady is so intelligent, mature and has already crossed her mid 20s in the early 2000s itself.... but her looks make her look till today like she is in her 20s or 30s .... which make many interviewers ask her silly questions most of the time, as if she was their classmate in school or something, and she does not frown a bit on their ignorance and answers their stereotyped boring questions often asked to beautiful women, very respectfully.
That's what makes her among the greatest women Icons of India.

I have always loved that exchange in the movie between the leads. In a previous scene, Darcy confuses ethnicity of an Indian, and when corrected, he just says something like "it is all the same " or something. So when he goes, I am not British, but American, she goes "Exactly". Aishwarya was one of the first to break into a foreign film industry in a major role, and she has a poise and presence of mind that I admire. Good discussion post-clip.

Hindi is not the 'National' language, it is one of the most used languages of India. It is an official language. India has no 'National' language as that would demean a diverse multilingual society such as India by making just one language superior to others.
It is one of the prime example of saying/hearing a wrong thing so many times it becomes a belivable information. Here we see an internationally acclaimed face of India who is quite well versed in Indian culture giving false information to an interviewer because nobody ever corrected her. And now this false information, which is quite literally denied in the constitution of India will become the knowledge of multitudes of people of the world. A little responsibility is expected i guess.
I love Hindi. I can read, write and speak in Hindi (so so). Bollywood have made sure of that.
But I also love many other languages of India, even though I DON'T understand many of them.

If you really respect your guest and their work you would have asked different questions. All his questions were based off of prejudices Americans have against Indians. He could have asked how her Cannes experience for her was, he could have asked more about her experiences with other language industries because she speaks so many languages, there is enough to be interested in about her..
