- In this Shakespearean farce, Hero (Kate Beckinsale) and her groom-to-be, Claudio (Robert Sean Leonard), team up with Claudio's commanding officer, Don Pedro (Denzel Washington), the week before their wedding to hatch a matchmaking scheme. Their targets are sharp-witted duo Benedick (Kenneth Branagh) and Beatrice (Emma Thompson) -- a tough task indeed, considering their corresponding distaste for love and each other. Meanwhile, meddling Don John (Keanu Reeves) plots to ruin the wedding.

"Introducing Kate Beckinsale", they don't do trailers like this anymore. I never knew this was her first movie role either. This is a stellar cast, why have I not heard of this movie before?

It was not her first movie role. Maybe first blockbuster but not first time film.
One of his greatest merits, beside his directing and outstanding acting, is that Branagh brings Shakespeare to the people. Never I enjoyed the lyrics more than in this wonderful movie. Boy, what a casting! And don’t overlook the glorious performance of Michael Keaton.

I think the reason Denzil Washington was chosen for this role was because Americans apologized to their colonial ancestors. Recently, we see black characters in historical films. Let's be realistic, black people are still treated as second-class citizens in America.

The dialogue delivered by these upcoming actors is easy to understand without losing much of the charm and class Shakespeare shared
It's hard to make material that's hundreds of years old palpable to a general audience but the actors are really committed right down to the costumes and the mannerisms of the era

One of my favorite movies. I was in the stage play in college many years ago and loved every minute of it.
This is by far the best film version’s of one of Shakespeare’s. most popular plays. It helps that the ensemble cast is so well matched. Relatively, it is an easy play to understand for those studying at school.
Jesus Denzel is personally one of my favorite people to look at. He was such a fine man in his prime and one of the greatest Actors of all time.

I did not know Reeves go so back. My first intro to him was Speed. Then there's Denzel. I knew his black movies as well as Philly and heart condition but never this. Shows his chops by getting in this movie
Never saw such a boring film being not that boring. Maybe that was Shakespear's point with the play.

Keanu Reeves as Don Jon?! Really 👿
Don Jon is a mere device - he's important to developing the plot but nothing else, much like the Sheriff. Brannagh handles them both as archetypes in that period's theatre - a buffoonish lawman and a sneering villain.
I adore Keanu, but he was not the right pick for the role

Branagh & Thompson were naturals with Shakespear, but Keanu & Washington were fish out of water. Not their cup a tea.
i haven’t seen this one, but Washington’s Macbeth was fantastic.
I thought Denzel did a fine job here but I agree with you about Reeves.
Keanu´s role was fairly simple - look evil, laugh evil, repeat - not much of a dramatic acting needed. Denzel was there for the star-power, but I believe he did a good job.

No they couldn't. Aside Othello there was no black characters in Shakespeare's work. You can't demand every character to be blackwashed...or I guess you can, since they're doing it all the time.
