Interesting video and your production quality is great.
If the planning rules were changed, and we lived in a fully free market, so anyone can build any building on any piece of land they want ... then your argument would be completely fair.
Anyone who wanted a house could just buy a piece of land somewhere and pay the cost of construction and they would have a home.
And you can get plots of land near London for £1000 for instance.
However the reason that land is so cheap is because of zoning rules, the government forbids people from building on that land and uses violence to enforce those laws (as ultimately all laws are enforced with violence when push comes to shove).
Imagine if similarly the government made laws that only certain people were allowed to sell food, that would massively jack up the price of food and be unfair and be predatory to people who just want to eat.
And the point about older people is a valid one. "In 1997, 89% of LAs had an affordability ratio of less than five times workers’ earnings, whereas only 7% had this level of affordability in 2022."
So basically all the older people bought up all the housing stock (and the council houses under "right to buy") when it was cheap and now make disproportionate profits renting them out to younger people.
The person writing to you is basically correct, if they haven't expressed it perfectly, it's a government created monopoly system that gouges the poor and gives money to the rich.
And honestly anyone who supports this broken system and profits from it, if they know just how broken it is, is profiteering from the misery of others. Part of the money they're making is fair payment for services rendered, however the other part is monopoly money.
You sort of throw your hands up and say "should we abolish private landlords and just all live in a ditch?" which isn't really an honest engagement with the problem and is a "strawman" argument.
Do you believe we should have planning reform and that the current planning rules are causing a lot of deep suffering to vulnerable people in this country? Would make a better video imo.

I built my own house by employing trades people directly. If I can do it so can other people, and it saved me a fortune. It takes a bit of work and some study to do it right, but it is not rocket science. Plus, you can always employ a professional site manager to help you oversee the work and make certain that everything is done correctly.
