@@garyblanchard1084 In their early years, yes, but as they got older, they realized (this, from an interview with Pete Townsend), that the instrument smashing was a bit silly, so they stopped doing that.
A friend invited me to a midnight showing of The Kids Are Alright my senior high year 1981. I instantly became a fan and promptly bought all The Who vinyl I could find.
God, what an incredibly fantastic powerhouse song!! First time hearing this, I was a Soph. in h.s. in Hempstead, NY, sick in bed with the old bakelite Regal radio on beside me..This song came on, I just flipped out!! This was their first American hit. Later I found out, also by just the jangly, clangy sound of Townshend's guitar, that it was a Rickenbacker electr. 12-string, prob. this Rose, Morris 1993 DeLuxe model..Just flipped me for a loop!! Had the pleasure of covering this, both playing rhythm on a ES335, and on my Rick 360/12 12-string while covering this and "The Kids Are All Right"!! Great memories of when I was playing professionally in Tucson Arizona!!
It's confirmed that the Ricky 12 was played by Jimmy Page. Yeah. THAT Jimmy Page! See my comment for the run-down of what is going on with this song. Tricky stuff.
I had their Live at Leeds, 8 track tape and player mounted under the dash. At 15, I installed the speakers and player myself! Still proud. Great Rock album.
My brother took me to my first concert at14...it was The Who and Lynard Skynard. That was a defining moment for me seeing the Who live. Since that day, I've been to 12 Who concerts. They're my favorite Rock and Roll band. Long Live Rock!
Actually, that's Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin fame. He was a "hired gun" on TONS of recordings done in Great Britain and Producer Shel Talmy brought him in to do the electric (Rickenbacker) 12-string. See my comment elsewhere for this video.
A MONSTER tune! I have listened to this for decades and it never gets old. For you guitar players especially: The Rickenbacker Electric 12-String is played by Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin fame using flatwound strings in standard 12-String tuning EXCEPT that the "G" strings are tuned to a regularly pitched "G" and not in octaves. My Rick 12 wouldn't sound right when trying to play the tune with the usual set-up of tuning and strings. But I figured it out. This stereo mix is my fave. Just 12-string electric guitar, bass and drums with the Ivy League doing the clapping and backing vocals. Moon's funky backbeat hi hat licks and the ride and crash cymbals are now heard whereas they were pretty much mixed out in every other mix I have heard.
@@Tonks143 That was the conventional wisdom for decades. Yes. But when Jimmy finally took credit for it back some years ago in a video interview I saw, my suspicions were confirmed
Love the early Mod sound and sharp look before the looser more general rock and the hippy style which came later. Their brief time as The High Numbers is a good listen 👍🇬🇧
No effort made to synch the audio with video here. Pete looks like a skinny goofball, Moon holds his drumsticks “wrong” and Roger looks silly in that overcoat. Entwhistle’s ears stick out funny. This is a relic from a naive era. Love it! ❤️
Pete wasn't a fan of this song, written as a pop introduction to the charts as he put it. Irrespective, we love it, an amazing 2 minutes of timeless guitar pop that will never go out of fashion. They cram more excitement into 2 mins than you would think humanly possible.
What was Keith here? 18, 19 yrs. of life. THE WHO! even tho from 🇬🇧 BRITIAN, never seemed like BRITISH INVASIONERS! with say the BEATLES, ROLLING STONES, or the ANIMALS. same goes for the KINKS! another early PUNK! BRIT band!
Around this time I had a Lambretta li 150 in metallic purple with chrome side panels and front mudguard, polished alloy horn cover and added lights and bars. Me and my mates rode through tunnels just to hear the sound we made! Basically a bunch of dickheads but we never knew it!! 😂😂😎
God, life goes by fast. I was just there at 14, loving these guys, and now I’m 70. Enjoy your youth, kids.
Amen Mr Fish, I was 15 then be 72 in less than two months.. lol
See these at The Marquee Wardour Street bout 1965.I believe they were the first loudest group I ever heard Live.especially in the quite small Marquee,
Indeed. I'll be 60 in June.

The Sound of the Sixties!!
Nothing else gets anywhere near the Genius of these boys.
R.I.P Keith and John.❤
R.I.P. Keith Moon & John Entwistle 😥😥
When I first heard this song (1965), and "My Generation" I had to have them! The Who created their own genre of music.
I believe we're looking at what would eventually become punk rock right here.
I never tire of Can't Explain...
Banging sound who's listening right now in 2024 , the kids are alright aren't they back then thanks for the ace upload 💯🎸👍🎵🎶
Everything great about the music of the 60s in a tight little 2 minute package.
A bit like some of the girls ;)

Certainly one of the greatest rock bands, ever.
some things are so obvious you don't need to say it
@@clubhouseme This comment was to the new generation, many who have never even heard of The Who.
Aggressive music culminating in guitar smashing and stage destruction was their hallmark.

A two-minute time capsule from a simpler, bygone era. What a groovy vibe.
Used to see them at the Florida Rooms in Brighton by the Palace Pier, in the 60's, I was 17 - amazing times!!!
why is this still such a bop
this could come out now and still sound fresh

He gets such a GREAT tone out of that Rickenbacker!
Mod sound and look was liberating. It helped create the ground swell for Sixties musical art.
I had their Live at Leeds, 8 track tape and player mounted under the dash. At 15, I installed the speakers and player myself! Still proud. Great Rock album.
I remember it being voted the best live album ever, sometime in the late 80's I think.
It's certainly up there, for sure.
Love that raw sound of the 60ies. Here they still seem kinda "innocent" so to speak.
“Front man” on the drum riser. Moon was a treasure.
All these years still a great tune
Thank you John Entwistle for thumping us into the Unseen Realm with your bass guitar in 1965, you were the original Geddy Lee !!

That song is an outstanding of British pop/ rock that was also the precursor of "Progressive rock".
And punk: the Clash took the guitar riff for the Clash City Rockers.
Never realized before that Pete was using a 12 string. Fantastic early rock song

Jimmy Page didn't play on this track, he was in the studio as a session musician but they never used any of his takes.

Timeless music. It will never get old
They all look so young. Mods, Rockers those were the days.
They were young and those were the days
Dont forget the Mockers
With 2 older brothers and sister the Who was one of many bands that were in my dna growing up in 65

....and how cool is that Rickenbacker solo?
What amazing tone Pete gets! Just great. And John's bass tone, too!
I've known this song since before I got into the Byrds but I just realised how Byrds-like the guitar is in this one. Particularly that solo.
Amazing sound
Love Moonies Ludwig super classic kit. Pre Premier deal.

Perhaps the single best riff of all time. Tighter than a full tick.

Not even -- they were still mostly teens. Townshend was 20.

Jimmy Page on guitar or Pete?
