Hanson: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

- Oct. 16, 2017 | Stephen Thompson -- The audience for Hanson's first Tiny Desk concert could be cleanly sorted into two distinct camps: the curious and the committed. The curious were the ones who'd inquired about whether the band would play its 1997 smash "MMMBop" (answer: nope), or wondered what Isaac, Taylor and Zac Hanson have been up to since the '90s (answer: touring constantly, putting out records, starting their own label, raising families, launching a music festival, developing a line of Hanson Brothers-branded "MMMHops" beer). As for the committed? They were psyched.
For those who haven't kept up, Hanson has maintained a lovingly ravenous fan base. The night before this performance, the brothers played to a joyous sold-out crowd at Silver Spring, Maryland's 2,000-capacity Fillmore - and, it turns out, some of those 2,000 folks work at NPR. (A few even had friends fly in for the occasion.) We tried to get the committed as close to the Tiny Desk action as possible, because the vibe in the room was special.
This year marks Hanson's 25th anniversary as a band, and it's been 20 years since the release of Middle of Nowhere, the album that made stars out of the Hansons when Isaac was 16, Taylor was 14 and Zachary was 11. With a greatest-hits collection just out - it's called Middle of Everywhere - this was a perfect time to catch up on a few post-"MMMBop" career highlights. That meant opening with "Thinking 'Bout Somethin'" (from 2010's Shout It Out) and ducking back to 2000 for the title track from This Time Around before closing with Hanson's charmingly infectious new single, "I Was Born."
Oh, and as the tagline at the end of the video cryptically notes: "To be continued..." We'll just leave it at that.
Set List
"Thinking 'Bout Somethin'"
"This Time Around"
"I Was Born"

Isaac Hanson (guitar, vocals); Taylor Hanson (piano, vocals); Zac Hanson (percussion, vocals)

As a Hanson fan that actually lives in Tulsa (their hometown)...I can say these guys are so talented and such a positive influence on the music scene in Tulsa. Tulsa's music scene would not be as progressed as it is without them, whether local bands know it or not. They have invested in not only the world, but in Tulsa, and I am so thankful for that.
That's nice to hear.
How often do you run into them? 😍
@@dianacasillas5179 I don’t think they live in Tulsa anymore. Pretty sure they haven’t lived there for a long time
@@PumpkinMozieyes they most definitely do live in Tulsa
Hola Evan quieres tener una amiga Argentina? Siempre soñe con ir a Tulsa desde pequeña. Amaba a los Hanson. Hoy una mujer de 39 años.
You know what it is?
They got the funk. Always had it. Never went anywhere. The funk only got stronger.
Hanson breaks the internet with positive comments underneath their videos. Never seen anything like it and it’s beautiful!
these guys been basically doing their own tiny desk for years. their harmony is of one voice. taylor's confidence oh boy. issac's voice is gold. zach is just awesome. and together they are not just musical but insightful and brilliant. what more to ask from a band?
I love Isaac's voice. I'd love to see him sing lead more often. Such an under-appreciated band.
exactly my thought when I heard him
@@arvidreams1428 their new song is issac singing solo the whole song without his brothers harmonies or anything. Sounds amazing.
He sounds like early Bruce Springsteen, which is great
Ya, very bluesy.
Three people for which music is passionate and effortless.
Nailed it! That's why I love them. :)
They’ve never NOT broken a sweat during a show, idk what’s effortless about it lol
This is it.
When Taylor showed out on the piano, I had chills I haven't felt in 25 years. Lol.
Imagine raising these three boys and watching them grow from playing together in your garage to still being this passionate as adults. ❤
I was never a Hanson fan but how can u Dis a group of guys that stand and deliver like this live. 100% better than 99% of the trash out there on the airwaves.
Maxbeanbag "le wrong generation."
Hopefully this makes you more of a Hanson fan!!
The songs of Hanson are not just ordinary songs. It's full of wonderful & meaningful lyrics. They are underrated. And they desrve to have more exposures!
I just saw them in Tahoe this past weekend. I've loved them since their 1st album. I've never gone to a concert because, honestly, no one that I've seen so far has lived up to what I expect (they suck live). Hanson, though... what you hear on their albums, and in this video, are exactly what you can expect.
So true!
So underrated and talented !!! They have such a awesome catalog of music and all people remember is Mmmbop. Middle of Nowhere was the first cassette tape I ever bought with my own money at 8 years old and have followed there career since.
Me too! Have always loved Hanson since the they first came on the air waves!
I am LOVING all the comments from people who are surprised at how talented this band is! Us Fansons have always known, but it's amazing to see non-fans appreciate their harmonies, lyrics and musicianship!
This :D
We've always known, but it feels great to see other people wise up to the fact that they're wonderful! ^__^
They are the ONLY artist that hasn't let me down live.
Ya, I knew the world would appreciate them one day. Plus, they're like a fine wine, becoming more complex with age. And because they started so young, they have more time!
As a child i was never a fan this is pure and soulful
Nice try Hanson
what blows my mind is how zach can still hit all the same notes he hit when he was like 8 years old
Haha, well they do sing in a totally different key now, but yeah, he does still definitely have a killer falsetto which comes in handy for the high harmonies :)
Yes!!
Absolutely!
Full Trained voices🎉👏👏👏👏
True words ..absolute 🔥🔥🔥..
Wow Soul, Gospel, Blues, folk, Rock n Roll. Love it
Man, every time I see these guys, I'm floored. So good. Just so good. They deserve FAR MORE respect than they get.
Get a kick out of all the "wow, they're actually good!" and "they're still around?" reactions. Yes and yes! Just don't hate them because they're beautiful. ;)
fair :)
This is the most underrated TinyDesk of all times.
It`s actually INCREDIBLE they are still together as musicians, brothers and friends and bring always such a fresh breeze into the world of music! Also the fact they are not messed up but really pure humans! AMAZING and KEEP ROLLING, please! :)
This time around is such a good song
Eric Dutton their best!!
20 years ago, you wouldn't have caught me dead listening to Hanson, but this performance was better than anything I've heard on the radio in quite some time. it almost hurts me to admit that I loved this. Good job, guys.
mratliffjr0001 It shouldn't hurt you to admit that lol. Hanson is very talented (like you said, more talented than most of the artists dominating the airwaves) and make great songs!
Liking and loving Hanson is one of the good things in this crazy world. That's why we shouldn't be hurt nor ashamed for admiring such talented, amazing, & kind-hearted people like them. 💖💖💖
It's just that people didn't understand them when they started, so they were mocked for their purity. But, they've always been extremely musical!
@@tmckmusic8584 You’ve explained it the best!
They give me goosebumps when they sing a cappella. I love beautiful harmonies & this group delivers that.
Man, this is tight in a way that non-family bands may not be able to touch.
Never listened to these guys and have to say they're great. Listening to and enjoying great music is nothing to be ashamed about.
I was a fan when they were kids and i was 11. What a good feeling to hear them again and notice they didn't change, except their music grew up too, keeping the same happy/simple/joyful nature. I became a musician because they were my model. It really makes me something listening to them again, and almost because i didn't expected to find this video this morning, i was just looking for something jazzy to wake up ... I remember now why i'm what i am. Because i was that teenager who listened to Hanson Brothers :)
That synchronised hair check at 3:33
Love these guys. Perfect examples of humble and talented.
for a child band still rocking 25+ years later and actually sounding better than ever...it's rare. Super talented brothers, very cool stuff.
One of the best performances on here. They're really tight.
I hate when people act like they were a one hit wonder they have been putting out great music for years they are so talented
Right. That had so many hits in the 90s-2000s
Rediscover them recently honestly. Their music is pretty good. Glad they stayed true to themselves
I had to give them a thumbs up. Its not quite the music I like, but these guys are a tight group, the song writing is solid, and musicianship is strong. I guess that's what happens when musicians are committed to making music together for so many years.
melodicdreamer72 I'm a huge Hanson fan so I don't understand how their music can't be someone's style lol. But I really love when people like yourself can still appreciate their talent and dedication without blowing them off as a tween boy band or one hit wonder!
I completely agree and the music's not my favorite but it's hard to not enjoy and respect it after seeing how genuine they are as musicians.
Kudos to you guys, who don't underestimate Hanson's talents! 😘
Started listening in 1997… I am 34 now and I’ll always love Hanson. Talent like this is so rare
Love Hanson since 97. NPR thank you for this tiny desk concert!! I can´t wait to see the special Xmas songs (video).
When someone is so passionate about what they do you have nothing but admiration for them.
The masked singer got me back to your music and wow, respect 👏👏👏 your songwriting is so good, this time around should be considered an all-time classic. Can't believe teens wrote such a powerful song!
I wanted to hate it because of the preconceptions I've had about them since the 90's but this was actually magnificent. Better than the majority of crap out there today. Deserves more views.
Most underrated band ever. They have been making music consistently since Mmmbop and yet people only ever think of them as the Mmmbop kids.
Yeah I'm still not ready to tell my mates I like Hanson now, though.
How can someone dislike a family band? They were so talented then and now! Love them!
@@Lincolnnuttall be brave and if they ask why you show them this. Promise they'll be bobbing along with the music instantly
That breakdown harmonies section at the beginning of This Time Around always gets me... LOVE
Man, how can you not love these brothers… very talented and really great songs!!
They're so talented
Isaac Hanson!! His part during This Time Around was amazing!
Since I heard This time around live for the first time in 2017 has become my anthem.. love them and the passion they put into their music
My respects for these three wonderful artists! 🙏
Coming from a true 20 year+ fan, they are still killing it ❤️❤️
I don't understand why people consider Hanson as "One Hit Wonders" or "Boy band". Well, those guys are very talented and underrated musicians! Talent + passion + discipline = Hanson. Thanks NPR !
I started loving Hanson 15 years ago - 3 brothers connected, like the Bee Gees and Los Lonely Boys, such talented song writers and performers. I hoped the same connection for my own 3 grown kids. This song totally resonates with me, even at the age of 70. THANK YOU Hanson and Tiny Desk💙
Just an absolutely electrifying performance, my word.
all grown up and better than ever!
Isaac grew into his looks. what a hansom man!
Good to see they're still going, and going strong!
i didn't know han solo played piano so well.
Good one lol
Can’t unsee 😂
I'm happy to hear how genuine they sound. Ive never looled very much into their music but much respect. Liked.
Man getting that piano in there couldn’t have been easy. Never was a fan of them but they’re all talented musicians.
I became a fan when the Middle of nowhere came out. It's been great to grow up with these guys and see they're still rocking good and sound better than ever ❤️
Incredible musicians
Didn’t know they still were around - sounding even better than 25 yrs ago!
Hanson was my first concert, I was 7 years old, will never forget it. You got to hand it to these guys, they still got it.
The super talented musical brothers who'd have got more recognition + appreciation. You rock! 🤟
I was raising four babies when these guys hit it big. I’ve just now rediscovered them; what talented, wise and upstanding family men!
Hoping I can see them an hour away in two weeks.
Seeing them on 8/9!
Been a fan for 20 years and not ashamed to admit it.
I'm a committed fan as well, I love their positive upbeat music and their new song was great! Thanks for continuing to spread the love Hansen! 😍
And for those tight-ass pants! 😍
I thought they were talented kids in their beginning but as young men have nailed it; the harmonies are incredible. Would like to catch a concert if they came close enough.
I'll be damned, I enjoyed it! Polished and talented as hell.
Now that they're all grown ups, I guess we can like this band now? XD
By far, the most talented group out there. Their ability surpasses everyone. Amazing skill and talent. Hanson rocks.
OK I LOVE Hanson but you are reaching here haha
This... Is... Actually.. amazing! I think I actually like this version of "this time around" more than the original... And I actually loved this song when I was little...
Yes, Hanson is so amazing for 25 years! 😉 What do you mean that you liked their version of 'This Time Around' than the original? They are the original singers & composers of that song! 😄
2024, these guys still rock!
Soul, tight harmony and eye candy. Makes me really happy to see and hear!!!
Wow they sound awesome! So much talent in that family. I'm glad to see they're still together making music! Thanks NPR!
Kevin Hitchcock Hanson is making music for 25 years. Actually, they are on World Tour now, in celebration of their 25th Anniversary. 🙂
TIGHT. I'm really glad I stayed till the last song too!
Performance is as tight as Taylor's pants.
that`s tight.
Taylor & Natalie's 7th child announcement really debunks the theory that tight pants reduces chances of pregnancy!
Hahahahahahah!
JAJAJAJAJAJAK
@@lynnie5551 They are christians. So, they don't do anything to avoid have children. So if it happened, it happened.
So talented! Only a song as phenomenally good as MmmBop could eclipse this much mega talent! The most under-rated group of all time! Well, at least they are laughing all the way to bank.
Omg, absolutely proud to see this amazing performance, knowing I’ve been a hanson fan since my teenage. 🥰 Finally seeing this recognition in the comments of how talented they all are with songwriting and instrumental playing. They really need more of this! ✨
Damn! I’d say age looks great on Taylor, Zac and Issac!
They are such amazing musicians. Their concerts, which I have been going to for many years, are so fun. The energy is fantastic and they sound incredible.
This feel good music is perfect for this Monday morn.
Or a Tuesday morning, or any morning for that matter
Well I'll be damned. They all sound and look amazing!
I didnt think they still made music glad i came across this
Yeah I've been following them for ages - just so glad they're still playing! Keep rocking guys!!!
Been a fan since 98’ glad to see them grown in music
Thinkin' Bout Somethin' is one of my favorite of their songs, Taylor at his best! We don't get a lot of opportunities to see him do a piano solo.
Man these guys look like they’re still in college, I’m 26 and already look like golem
Flower Tulip I'm 19 and look like Hagred lol shave my hair and switch stories then I turn into Golem
Great parenting.
Lol I'm 35 and getting to golem status myself
They sound like humble well adjusted men.
Good for them!
So much pride and love wrapped up in my heart right now! 25 years and you just keep getting better! Love you guys!! ❤️❤️❤️
Amazing piano skills.. Love Taylor's vocals.. Great performance
Perfect song to start with! Yay, for Hanson!
Great to see the Hanson boys still kickin' it, and still sounding great!
That was really good - great harmonies and arrangements and a great performance overall
i just peeked in and heard hall and oats tone or better...now i am a fan!
They make harmonies like nobody else
I'm crying rn. Deffinetly love their passion. 🖤⚘
I was taken here directly after the Perceptionists... the beauty of these tiny desk concerts is, that you can just let the videos flow and there's never a disappointment.
They sound really good! Glad to see them all grown up and playing big boy music. Nice job guys!
Wow this brings me right back to my childhood! Can't believe its been 20 years! Feels like yesterday! Fantastic!
♥️ Now this is TALENT.
These guys are talented! They put on the party!
They are so talented ✨️ I love Hanson
This time around is one of my favourites.
Why have we never heard this in Europe?? Wow awesome tune
You guys need to get into Europe ASAP ❤
I like this. It's Hall & Oatsey.
VOCES PERFECTAS....SOY COLOMBIANA...LOS AMO
Legends. Seen them twice Live and they're absolutley amazing!!! ❤
My absolute favorite band in 1997! People really have underwritten them for so long. They’re so good live.
Oh, this is happy.
The sound was as good as the original ones, really musicians, dedicated their life with music, music for human...Love Hanson always, Lots love from Indonesia 😍😍
