Cats non-verbal messages and communication clues are often puzzling. For centuries, cats have been regarded as unpredictable, mysterious and solitary. it’s pertinent to understand the rationale behind the behavior and adaptations of cats.
In this video, you will learn the essentials that will help you understand and communicate with your cat.
The Ears
When the ears are slightly bent forward, the cat is particularly telling you that it is playful and curious. Most times, this gesture is spotted when the cat is given a new toy or seen a new thing.
When the ears are pinned back and flat, your cat is certainly very angry at something or maybe at you. This gesture is most often followed by hissing or growling. Sometime, this gesture can also suggest fear.
When the ears are straight and upright, something has got your cat’s attention. Animals in the wild do this instinctively so they could hear more and ascertain if a coming sound meant danger or not.
The Eyes
When your cat stares at you and slowly blinking its eyes, it simply means the cat adores you. Humans are even fond of this slow blinking of the eyes especially when flirting with someone they admire.
If however, your cat looks at you with a slit, constricted pupils, it’s definitely angry with you over something. This look is often given in the absence of an expected treat.
Dilated pupils are often a sign of excitement. Just like kids, when cats get excited their pupils dilate and become larger telling you it is excited and ready to play. This sort of body language can often be observed when the cat is happily playing with or attacking a toy.
Sometimes dilated pupils can also mean defensiveness or aggression especially when the look is accompanied by hissing or growling sounds.
Tail Signs
The tail signs of cat are one of the most communicative in the animal kingdom. Unlike the dogs whose major communication through the tail involves wagging to show excitement, the cat has a number of different tail sign to communicate different feelings and emotions.
Wagging of the tail
Tail wagging is a sign of frustration in the feline family rather than excitement as common with other pets.
When your cat wags its tail, it probably isn’t happy about something and you better avoid petting them at that instance as it can lead to a few scratches.
Puffed up tail
Seeing a kitten with a puffed up tail can be very amusing but it is anything but that. When your kitten puffs up its tails, it most often is frightened of something and if followed by a hissing sound then it is preparing for attack. By puffing up its tail, the cat displays a "larger-than-life" attitude and sends signals to the enemy that it is scary to deal with.
Twitching of the tail
Cats twitch their tails when they are ready or excited to play. Tail twitching is quite similar to tail wagging but often involves lots of flicks of the tail at its tip.
Tucked away tail
Running with tails in-between ones legs has always been an idiom for submission and anxiety. Your cat is nervous if it tuck its tail.
Curved tail
Curved tail is often a sign of curiosity in cat. When cats have their tail curved like the question mark sign, it means they are ready to explore. So if you’ve been looking for a good time to expose your cat to a new toy or activity, whenever the tail is curved might be a good time.
Embracing tail
When cats have their tails curled up all around them or around other cats in embrace, they are mostly communicating happiness, and satisfaction.
Aside the ears, eyes and the tail, cats also express themselves using their whole body.
Cats lying on their back with the belly exposed
When your cat lies close to you on its back with the belly exposed its simply communicating a level of trust and confidence in your friendship.
If this pose is actually followed with a hissing sound or a growl, you may want to avoid the temptation of reaching out and scratching its belly as they are most often agitated and ready to strike.
Arched back
An arched back is often a sign that your cat wants you to cuddle or pet them. This is an opportunity you wouldn’t want to miss to make your cat feel loved and welcomed at all times.
If the arched back is combined with bristled hairs, your cat is probably frightened of or angry at something.
Rubbing its body against you
Most times when a cat rubs its cheek against the owners, they believe

Butt wiggling
Butt wiggling is not a show of excitement as often portrayed in animated series. Most times when your cat wiggles its butt, it’s getting ready to pounce on something or stalking its prey.
Cat Vocalizations
The short, high pitched meows most often communicate a friendly gesture and greeting.
Trilling
Chirping
Yowling
Hissing and growling
Purring
The purring sound is one of the most beautiful sounds cat makes and for all it’s worth, it signifies your cat’s sweet affection for you.

Actually you only told a half of fact, there are several purrs.
You described the purr of a mama cat who's purr can help kittens grow and fight disease.
Second purr is louder and almost frantic which is the purr they use when trying to get you to do something for them. This purr is in the same vocal range as a human baby's cry.
Third purr is a low deep purr that's barely audible, this is a purr of affection that usually only happens when they are at rest near you getting pet, it's absolutely the purr of affection make no mistake.
And finally there's the purr of excitement, this comes out when they are getting ready to mate with another cat, it's not heard very often by humans because typically when they are in that amorous state we steer clear!

Knowing that "purring" doesn't always indicate a single thing is the first step towards understanding there are multiple forms and meanings to the varied vocalizations lumped together under "purring". Culvea Solvere just gave more information and insight into the differences in both form and function of "purring".
That is because sometimes when cats are injured or think you are injoured they will purr to heal you.
This is like a language that is so specific, any accent you put into a letter changes the whole meaning of the word.

Quakezi One of my cats does this quite a bit because he doesn’t want to be picked up. Basically he is lowering his belly to the ground making it harder for me to put my hands under it. I promised him awhile back that I wouldn’t pick him up until he was ready and it has worked. It has built his trust up enough that he is doing things he never would before. I’ve now been able to pick him up a bit while he stayed relatively relaxed. All cats are different, like different things and have unique personalities. It’s one of the things that makes cats so great!

Today, we brought in a cat that was dropped off near our house. He has been nothing but sweet and adorable and cuddly, and even let me pet his belly! We're currently trying to figure out a name for him, but I wanted to call him BB, short for Babey or babey boy. He's definitely still a kitten and I'm glad we can help him out for a bit

When I’m watching this, I have more appreciation to how gentle and kind my cats are. Even when they are extremely scared they never showed aggressive to us. The only time my cat scratched me was after I give him a liquid medication and he was so scared he tried to run away from my grip and his back paws scratched my chest when he was climbing over me. They are really the best cats ever.

I mean when you don't do the slow blink yourself and just stare at the cat, it will think you're in hunting mode and currently looking at your prey. They feel threatened. Although if you do the slow blink and they reciprocate, that means they like you.

Thanks for sharing this. I've been around cats literally my entire life (61yrs). My mother often told me I was raised by our male Siamese named KoKo who lived until I was 15. She tied a rope around my waist for him to keep me within the boundaries of our yard, and have a scare to show for it.
I've had 22 cats myself from the time I moved from my parents until now. Currently I have 2 cats both of which were rescues, a beautiful long haired multicolored male, found in a corn field (Squeezer) and a black female (Shoo) born from a feral mom. Both of these cats are very nervous of stranger's and terrified of loud noises. Shoos eyes are yellow, however when she is excited or very content her eyes become dilatated and the most beautiful bright orange. She is my 3rd black cat but the first with the yellow/orange 👀. I love my cats and love communicating with them. BTW cats love routine and are often more content knowing what to expect.

Hello JoAnn how are you doing today
Here’s my cat story: I was never a cat person. Never owned one and never saw the fascination with them; I always thought they were kind of mean and strange. About a year ago, totally on a whim, I decided to visit the local cat rescue shelter. I had heard about it from friends and basically just wanted to have some entertainment. There were about 300 cats roaming around the building. Some of them were playing, others were eating, sleeping, wandering, etc. When I got to the back room there was this very light colored brown cat; it was a color I had never seen on a cat, and his name was fittingly “Khaki.”
Anyways, Khaki immediately started to paw at me and follow me. He was meowing very loudly and literally would not leave me alone; wherever I went he followed incessantly. About 30 minutes passed and the workers of the shelter were so intrigued; they told me Khaki had never meowed or been so outgoing. He was born at the shelter a year earlier and was extremely sweet, but he basically kept to himself and this was totally out of character.
Naturally, they said “I think this is a sign that he wants to go home with you!” Of course I know they must say that to every person who walks in the door, but something seemed very fitting ... so I said, “OK, I’ll take him home.”
One of the workers prepared his adoption papers and pulled out a carrying crate, and this is not an exaggeration: Khaki sprinted into the crate ... it was like he knew this was his fate! Even the workers laughed and thought how amazing it was to witness. So I signed the papers, gathered his stuff, and we get into the car. When I turned on the radio the song “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” (But if you try sometime you find ... You get what you need). It was honestly so strange!
Khaki instantly adjusted to my home and his new life. He’s a very affectionate, social, and curious cat. He very rarely leaves my side and waits for me by the door every time I leave the house. He loves to play with his little basketball, watch the birds in the window, and sleep directly against my side. I’ve definitely learned how unique and rewarding it is to own a cat. I’m thankful that we found each other!

I had a similar experience when I was at the shelter looking at all the cats all in cages. When I turned my back to the cages I felt a tap on my shoulder and turning around found this little black kitten reaching for me. He now lives with me and we love each other very much ❤

cats do not meow, only kittens do. Adult cats only meow on humans and only if it gets some respond they want. There is no "high pitch", "low pitch" meowing meaning. If a specific cat learns that high pitch sound gives her food, then high pitch sounds means she wants food.
My cats do not meow. If they want something they sit close by and wait until they get my attention and communicate what they want silently. If they want food they lick their cheek once a while. They will eventually do everything to get attention and what they want. It's on human to respond to the "right" expression with proper action to "learn" the cat behave as wanted.
Only ignored cats will become loud which is hard to ignore so people respond to that.

'talk' (meow) back at us. Purr all the time. Our last cat we had loved playing with balloons. It did not bother her When she would brake them on purpose. Then chase the flying scraps. She was a happy cat. Iiuswd to rock he. So adorable. We had fun with all are cats. Cat lover is who we are.
In experiences with the many cats I've had over the years, "Yowling" is also what they do when they are looking for you when they can't find you. Often, if I was somewhere else in the house and my cat was looking for me, they'd "yowl". When he would find me, or I find him, or say something while he's yowling, his meow changes immediately and goes to a regular sounding meow, because he knows your still in the vicinity.
As far as the "barely audible" meow, they can do this too if they are sick and feeling weak. They are asking for help or letting you know that they don't feel well.
When cats are very content and right there with you, especially cuddling, when they are very content, they will give a little soft meow with a little purr mix in, like he's so very relaxed and into the moment.
Playful cats can often make the arch back with hair sticking up and act like they are coming at you, basically sideways, as if to show their big badness, but in a playful way. Sort of like pretending that they are going to spar with you like you were another cat. Then you sort of give them a little playful "ftssss" sound and they quickly break the pose and playful run off. When they run off, it's like a sequence of actions: They will break that spar pose, tear off briefly, prance for a moment to regroup and sometimes sway their backside shuffling their rear from one side to the next.
Mine use to do that often when they were impish and wanted to play wrestle.
Sometimes when hand wrestling, he might play bite or dig a little to enthusiastically with his hind legs. If I would say "Oww", he would stop, and lick my hand because he wants you to know he's sorry.
And have you ever noticed, that when you call your cat, the meow response you may get can be humorous. One cat would respond with, "Meow?" like in an excited way, like a little kid saying, "Are we going outside and play!!!?" or "Is it time to EAT??".
Another cat would respond sort of in a grumpy way while lazily walking out from another room after a deep nap. He'd yawn and with a deep, short meow he'd go "mrrow", like a grumpy old man saying, "oh what do you want now and why did you interrupt my nap.".
When you're gone for a while and come home, you cat may meet you with , "meow meow meow meow" in different tones, one right after another while trying to practically pounce you with affection as if saying, "Yay your home, I miss you, I was so lonely and I waited and waited and now your'e home, I love you!!!!"
When my cat is looking for me she's yowling while carrying one of her stuffed toys in her mouth. Then when she finds me she lays down on the floor and wrestles with the toy for about a minute... Very cute! 😻
Another possible reason for yowling, especially with older cats, could be dementia or confusion, according to our vet. We've got a 20 year old boy who's been yowling for a couple of years now. There's really nothing we can do to stop him, he doesn't seem to realize what he's doing, I think. It may partly be, too, that he's looking for me or husband even though he knows exactly where we are, but maybe forgot? I yowl back sometimes to get him to hear how he sounds, but it doesn't stop him. (sigh) Actually, unless it's the middle of the night, which is when he sometimes does this, I think it's just another aspect to him and I like it though at times he sounds so forlorn.
