I should have pointed out in this video the stop is reversible, so you can plane against the wooden block so as not to mark a finished board.
A bit of an old saw blade is great for the sharp end of a planing stop.

I like it. Simple plus with patina looks vintage from the first day of use.
That's handy. I just fix a small piece of ply with a couple of panel pins and remove after each time I need it but your way is definitely more secure.
Good video!! I am using hold fast, dog foot and stop jigs which are inserted to the dog hols. Very flexible, affective, stable setting...and not expensive

For my planing stop I use a piece of timber screwed to the edge of the bench and sometimes secure the work piece with a Doe`s foot if needed.

Good to know, thanks John. I personally clamp a piece of wood at the edge of my bench, I thought it works well and it is easy but I ve never seen someone doing that so maybe it is not a good way

I think a good idea would be to recess a block a little deeper and make a square cap from wood, so that the metal surface is not exposed at all, just in case. When you knock out the hold down the cap just falls off

Well made - but:
I know that in English they say workbench, in German we call it a planebench - because we plane on it. And I would never put anything made of iron in the surface of a planing bench, I spend enough time sharpening my planer knives as it is.
I could imagine the whole thing made of hardwood only, but then it's not such a big step towards a tail-vise.
But you don't plane your bench top so there is no chance of hitting the metal teeth.
@@JohnMcGrathManInShed Of course I plane my workbench from time to time, after all it is the reference level for the workpieces that I plane. But OK, you can remove that piece of metal while you're doing it. In summary: The smaller the workpieces are that you plane, the higher the chance of hitting the metal. And sooner or later that is exactly what will happen. The residual risk is too great for me, mainly because it is unnecessary to use metal.
Thank you, your bench your choice, but sound too much, any hold down and wood clamp will do without ruining any surface.

Traditionally the stop was a just a block of wood that could be height adjusted, I still have my grandfather's bench with one and there is no way he would have put steel anywhere near where his precious planes could possibly hit. If you wanted steel why not just add a bench dog
The whole point of the metal is the teeth and the teeth are below the height of the work piece so there is no chance of hitting it. Planing stops like this go back hundreds of years so that would qualify as traditional.
Nice job John but wouldn't one of the recessed stops from Axminster have been alot simpler and do the same job. You could have up cycled and old handsaw to make the toothed grip
