- A basic overview and introduction to how I have kept my shrimp in 4 main ways.
1 how to set up an aquarium for amono, malawa and neocaridina davidi cherry red shrimp, blue dreams, red rilis or any other neo - while living in a community tank or dozens of fish.
2. why selectively breeding shrimp ideally requires many tanks, tubs or bins, but how you can play around with multicolor or different strains of shrimp in the same tank with minimal mixing, in a " shrimp nursery"
3 a low ph, low tds specific to caridina shrimp tank no fish, tannins from Cataupa leaves and calcium for kh and gh. along with info on water parameters, basic care and tips for a Taiwan bee, tiger shrimp, king kong, pinto, galaxy, and Japanese bolt shrimp
4. the best way to allow shrimp to simply all stay with their own color strains and yet also keep and breed other fish like guppies, endlers, mollys , platties, celestial pearl, gold ring, and glowlight danios or rasboras aka rasporas lol- using floating plants in your aquarium, proper substrate and also rock hides and caves to serve as shrimp nurseries.

I’ve heard of people successfully breeding neocaridina dwarf shrimp as low as 68 Fahrenheit buts that’s the lowest I’d ever go with them I’ve definitely noticed better success at lower temps like you mentioned with keeping their life cycle longer

Do a lot of breeders use nursery tanks when trying to lure up there lines? I've honestly never seen/ heard of doing this with shrimp. But I can see why you do it. I kinda want to try now.

Hello Alex, I assume you use buffers is because you have soft water?
I noticed that most fishkeepers forget to mention their water type (might be because they have mentioned it so many times already in other videos)
I assume that keeping neocaridinas in hardwater might be easier?
Do you get a little foggy look to your water from almond leaf in tank. I had a nice Amber look from my driftwood but now it got a little cloudy after almond leaf in tank! Thanks
yes totally normal and good enzymes, bacteria and fungi/ tannins that are all good for their slime coating
i kept 4 black phantom tetra 3 albino cory 3 khuli loach 3 cpd 2 neon 4 rcs a bunch of bladder snails and 1 assasin snail (1month old in the tank) just for snail population control however this morning i found one dead shrimp beside a newly dead or killed snail my shrimps are 4months old and i believe its a male, do assasin snail kill shrimps as well? should i remove the assasin snail out?
Thank you for the information on shrimp. I'm new to shrimp and I can't about 5 of my shrimp were saddled about 3 weeks ago but I cannot tell if they are pregnant or not. I don't know why i can't tell! It's driving me nuts because i want to tank them out and out them in my one gallon to give birth. I have them in a 5 gallon with my guppy fry and I don't know if they will eat the babies and my guess is that they will.

When you move them from tank to tank do you just met them out and put them into the next tank or temp acclamation or drip acclamation. Basically how do you move them?
I just move em as long as the water is roughly the same... usually I just test tds and ph
Do you think I could have a betta in my 30 gal with lots of plants, driftwood, and rocks without suffering too many losses?
Yes with enough hiding spots, 100% ...the fish may eat a few, but ive had it work out in 5 or 6 tanks over the years...if it's obviously a slaughter, move the betta to a bowl for a bit to cool off...or add a mirror to the side of the tank, so the betta flares at its self.
Are you still keeping Erythromicron with your CPDs? Several websites and forums say NOT to keep them together as they can interbreed/hybridize.
If that's no issue to you, it's no issue to me- just curious.
there is concern in that. however nothing survives even being an egg in this tank of micro predators. all the places an egg can drop (not into the shrimp rock hides) gets eaten within minutes by one of the hungry fish.
honestly if they did hybridize. I'd love to see it though
Hi Alex what do you think about keeping chilli rasboras with shrimps can this be done do you think as the rasboras are very small
Yes definitely. Just needs to be well planted and the baby shrimp need ground level rock pile hides, or cholla wood etc. The baby shrimp will be edible for 2 weeks to 8 weeks depending on species and parameters, but usually ive seen half the babies or more survive a tank where I've planned for them both.

How do you breed brackish shrimp? Like Amano shrimp and purple zebra shrimp?
Carefully. I think you'd be having to alter the sodium levels as they live their lives in brackish, salt, and "fresh". Which is actually just less brackish. I think our tanks are usually the most salt free water most fish would ever see.

Just wondering, if a guppy or a shrimp dies but you don't notice and you have a planted tank or it goes into a cave or under an ornament what do you do to discover it before the smell starts?
usually they float, but if a shrimp does, the other shrimp eat it within 12 hours and recycle all that calcium and protein (same with molts) Guppies also disappear within 24 hours....that being said, dead fish are not a good sign and may spike ammonia or spread whatever killed them in the first place. so it's best to try and scoop them out, but in a heavily planted tank with snails, shrimp, fish and bacteria colonies. usually there's no smell and I see them floating (often females die after giving birth from exhaustion or complications.)

What smell? Shrimp leave no trace. I had a totally different shrimp, a few grass shrimp. Platies and otos would just vanish.

they are pink caridina zebras for Suliwassi and have a saddle for color inside ad well ss algae type food inside which produces that

Bloodshot Gamer unfortunately they are larvae breeders who need brackish water i believe
Ottocinclus and hillstream loaches/borneo suckers are pretty shrimp safe. ottos are 100% as they dont like proteins the hillstream/borneo loaches less so.

As for neocaridina, i have a few top of the line blues but they're 8 to 10 dollars each

careful with killifish they love shrimp, had some in my tank and two of them pretty much wiped out my shrimp population in a 46g tank, i had to rehome them once they started feeding on my while cloud mountain minnows.
not clown killi right? they're not even an inch long...I know many other killifish are quite the hunters though

I have a mixed aquarium with breeding cherry shrimp; Ranging from a solid red to almost no red at all. Here's my question. How did I end up with a red rilly and a blue In my last batch of babies?
Probably to late. But if you take a look on a neocaridina breeding chart. You will quickly understand, that the red ones have surpressed genes, which with a bit of luck will show off once in a while when breeding. It's just happening naturally.
What Shrimp can i keep with my Amano Shrimp??
PS Only fish with them are some Otos, but ill be removing them as with them all together they do too much of a good job lol
Ammano can be mean when fully grown and hungry. That being said, most other shrimp can live with them, as long as you make sure they're also getting food while the amano's are busy with their own food pile heh

How many inches of soil
I love the 1/2 inch sand 1/2 -1 inch tiny gravel then 2 inches of soil/substrate...depending on the look you want, then cap all those layers with half an inch to an inch of fine sand again... so 3 to 5 inches ....(you can do 3 inches of soil for 6 total if its a 125 gallon or something that will have deep rooted plants long term. But it's all depending on how big the tank is.
A 10 gallon with good filtration may only need an inch of sand and or gravel and then an inch or two of nutrient rich substrate (but this leaves the water column exposed to the substrate leeching ammonia and nitrates....which is okay if your well cycled and not running tons of fish already.

How do y'all keep your tanks at 72?
Note the y'all. For me this seems like I need to refrigerate water a few degrees.
The room is 72, and if I need it warmer in a tank, I'll just turn up an in tank heater. But if you live someplace warm, that's tricky... Its 50 degrees F. outside here most the year.
Besides using a chiller, you can use a small fan to create airflow across the surface of the water. The air will help the water molecules with the highest kinetic energy to escape and thus reduce the overall temp. The airflow will also increase the rate of gas exchange so if you’re injecting CO2 it might not be a good solution.
clown killies have been known to eat both shrimplets and atack and eat parts of adult shrimp. clown killies have quite a big mouth in comparison to its body..
yes this is true, any fish technically will attack shrimp (even otos and plecos), however, in all my time keeping clown killies ive seen them eat one baby and never bug the adults. But yes, everyone is different and with dither species, feeding regiments and hiding spots, I think it would work just finely

Plants need nutrients....lots of fish, some extra potassium, a bit of carbon, a bit of root tab or liquid fertilizer and that's it.... some of my tanks now have co2 but i use it sparingly unless it's a new aquascape im trying to turn bright colors... check out my video called "35 vividly colored red pink and purple plants" it'll show you the huuuge difference

I can't keep shrimp alive no matter what I do. I've done hours and hours of research and spent lots of money, so I'm about ready to quit.
Don’t give up- I know it can be frustrating and deaths can be dissuading but the accomplishment is much greater once you get things steady. Check water parameters often, test your tap water, use good dechlorinator, slowly acclimate the shrimp. Live plants and water changes are also big keys. Good luck!!
I'm not an expert, but I've found your best success, other than appropriate parameters, comes from that biofilm and lots of it. Mine happily graze through bba. Set up a tank for like a month or three with the plant light running 24 hours a day. Test water, maybe you have copper to deal with. Err on the side of cold. Don't use carbon in the tank/filter. Ok to use carbon to strip your refill water and then rebuild it. but you probably don't want any type of chemical filtration in for the tank. And drip your refill water in, no dumping of buckets. I use an airline tube like a syphon to refill. Even that's kind of fast. Oh, and make sure your refill water isn't a lot different than the tank. If it is maybe you need to do smaller water changes.

Shouldn't use a buffering substrate for Neocaridina.
If you have RO water like Seattle, you should...like brightwell or fluval stratum plant and shrimp, both will prevent the swing of ph and drop the ph from say 7.0 to 6.6-6.8 usually in my tanks it puts my gh at 6 or 7 and kh at 3 or 4.
