  • In this video you will essentially see the entire life cycle of neocaridina davidi, and or neocardina palmata species of dwarf shrimp. These shrimp include the famous cherry shrimp, red rili, painted fire, sakura, gold line, jade, blue dream, blue velvet, fantasy blue, shoko, carbon, green jade, snowball and many more of the aquarium hobby's favorite and most popular type of dwarf shrimp.
    You will see my world champion Yellow Sakuran gold line shrimp. learning how shrimp breed and basically see most of the spawning or mating l, reproductive cycle. from female saddled shrimp, moving their unfertalized eggs to their body cavity one by one and washing them in the male shrimp's DNA / sperm. If you can see a berried aka pregnant shrimp, you can usually tell how far along the pregnancy is, and even determine when she will likely give birth when you can see the little embryos and the tiny black pupils of each shrimp in their mothers womb, between swimmerettes.

    Wow this video is exactly what I was looking for.I’m very new to keeping shrimp and I’m having a hard time seeing the differences in the males and females since my shrimp are dark blue and dark red and in dark densely planted tanks.
    I’ve been seeing a lot of molts recently in both respective tanks and a few very thick looking shrimp spending a lot of time “cleaning” the area underneath.

    Really cool! I never managed to see that! I just started to make videos in Italian with your same style, you inspired me! Thank you! I wanted to ask you if the rili gene can be fixed, I was told by a very experienced hobbyist that if you breed rilis together you will not get always rilis... that the rili gene can’t be fixed... what’s your experience? I wanted to buy orange rilis but by knowing that I got discouraged

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  5 лет назад

      Well that is true to some degree, as it is a mutation that is in the process of changing the whole shrimp into a clearish blue from red...and in the case of orange rili it's sort of a clear yellow to orange shift. ...so you can get 2 parents that have 50 or even 75% rili, but their children seem to decrease over the generations for some reason...like shift back to a red or to totally clear. In the mean time, you'll get funky red line, or gold line shrimp, you'll get only red tails or red heads, and even some that look similar to tiger shrimp with several 2 or 3 clear spots. But I wouldn't let it deter you, especially if you have 2 tanks... just notice which females produce quality rilis and try to keep them in one tank and the lower quality ones in another.
      It has gotten more and more stable though, years ago it was usually a fluke that would arise once in a blue moon

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  2 года назад +1

      Yeah if you stack rocks with little voids and space between the rounded edges of them...basically a pile- and then top it with susswassertang or moss, they're pretty darn safe to grow out in there. I like willow,.Christmas or Java moss most

    This was EXTREMELY helpful. I brought home two blues the other day. Appeared to be 1 male and 1 female. The first day the smaller one (male) was swimming laps around the tank while she was eating off the live plants. The next day they were both calm. Now today the male is nowhere to be found 😳 is it possible that she ate him after mating?

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  2 года назад

      Haha well it's possible he died after molting and she ate that... but I would guess he's hiding somewhere because they molt after mating and then they have no hard exoskeleton for 5 to 8 days (until the new one "cures") so I bet he will show up in a week

    Thank you for the detailed info on shrimp. I liked this content a lot. I subscribed to your channel. My question:all the juvenile is colored clear yellow like adult male ? And as they grow, female juvenile becomes banana yellow? Or only male juvenile is clear/creamy yellow? Thank you.

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  3 года назад +1

      It depends on the quality of grade. The highest grades of painted yellow fire or Sakura yellow (Sometimes called "Gold Line Sakura Yellows" or "Golden-back Yellows" ) will look solid banana yellow from about a month old onwards.
      Where as mid grades tend to be a mix of some being solid, some clear...and then if you just order "yellow cherry shrimp" -the lowest grade, they're all clear. However, many folks still like the translucent yellow more than opaque yellow, so it's also just a matter of taste.
      Good luck!

      @@Fishtory Thank you. I got yellow shrimp from LRB as well but mostly creamy colored shrimp second time I ordered and when I ordered first time, there was nice banana yellow one and wondering creamy yellow is because of the age,not the variety of shrimp being different from the first order yellow shrimp.

    Very interesting. I'm new to shrimp & this is my 1st batch. I'm thinking that I'm not going 2b able 2 tell or c much different in the sexes, never mind seeing the internal organs or eggs, b/c I have Blue Diamond shrimp & their color r a dark blue. Oh well.

      My Blue Diamond shrimp has matured & grown. They all r doing well. I think I have 3 females & 1 male. I'm not sure, but I think 1 maybe pregnant. Of all of them, she's the only 1 that's not translucent, so I can't c the eggs. I guess I just have 2 wait & c

    Love your video! I have a question here, my shrimps girls are moving their legs so much like when she pregnant but there is no egg on her belly, but she have so big saddle so..i dont know that she is preparing to have egg down or what she doing 🥺 i saw 3 shrimp do that after 1 day molt

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  3 года назад

      She is likely getting ready to do her final molt before becoming pregnant and moving the eggs down to her belly. She has to shed as close as possible to when she gets pregnant, since she will increase in size but her shell cannot. My guess is, if she has a nice saddle, she will soon become berried with her eggs fertilized...but she may hide for 2-5 days after molting since she will be soft shelled and vulnerable to attacks until her exoskeleton hardens

    Question: How do the shrimp act right before molting? Do they swim more or stretch or tend to stay more still?

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  3 года назад +3

      They tend to eat a ton for a week prior, swim all over (also common before mating ) and then they do these little curls where they bend in half, since they slip out through the neck/shoulder line of their exoskeleton

    I found eggs in my new shrimp tank and was glad to find your video! New mom doing this for the first time, but found her after watching this... and she had moved eggs during the night and lost some in the process it appears. But she is a snowball (white), so it's really easy to see everything, including watching her agitate them. Not sure if there are any males mature enough in with her though - how long can she hold them without receiving a sperm packet? Thanks for all the great information in this video, have a much better idea of what to expect.

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  2 года назад +1

      Well luckily if she had the eggs under her belly they were fertilized! They won't release the eggs without sperm standing by. She would be saddled and never drop if you had no males. But she could just be new and not good at holding them...or she could have gotten stressed from something as simple as a fish/water change. Also it could be that she just didn't like the genetics ...or there was a bacterial infection / mold and she wanted to drop them, eat the protein and try again in a few months. It's not that uncommon. If she does it more than 2x then I'd suspect something more though. Hang tight! Best of luck!

      Yeah theyll be okay....id try and keep it at 5 or less ghost shrimp since they sometimes bully food a bit....but get 10or 20 or 100 haha (just get a colony going of the neos. They need to feel safe if you want them to breed. If you want them to just hangout and survive....they should be fine in any combo.
      Welcome to the hobby! Cheers

    I’ve found this extremely educational,I’ve only had my orange Sakura and orange jili a couple weeks and wondered what the light coloured thing inside them were (I discovered finally that they were a saddle,phew) I have 15shrimp but my largest female lost her saddle and kinda looked larger underneath,but now her saddles coming back :/ I’m not sure what’s going on and with their colour of eggs they would be very camouflaged and hard to see for a beginner like me,any thoughts?
    They’re all molting,eating food and leaves and pooping fine,there’s now 3 females saddled and males have been swimming around crazy since yesterday,5 of the ones I’ve got are tiny babies whose colours have just started coming through with the recent moltings,plus I have a black sand substrate and live plants and a piece of driftwood with a Java fern attached and mounted onto a suction cup (which they love!),but I’ve seen lots of hobbyists use shrimp feeding bowls,how do you keep the food inside this? At present I’m feeding ground down algae wafers,ground tetra prima mini granules and I can’t see how I’d be able to feed this in a bowl :/

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  3 года назад +1

      Their egg color is a mystery to the hobby still..we have no idea why it changes..but its all normal and healthy...Green, yellow orange, white, black, brown, or even blue in blue dreams and carbons

    • @cetamillington
      @cetamillington 3 года назад

      Wow! Really,that’s amazing,I’ve only heard about egg colours varying from yellow/orange to green,I’ve like REALLY got my eye on blue shrimp but there’s just so many neocardina breeds to choose from,I also like the purple shrimp too. I think your shrimp are awesome! Plus it certainly answered why I have males swimming around their tank I’ve taken another good look at the largest female and still cannot fathom whether she’s berried or is producing another saddle,and to top it off I’ve now discovered rhabdocoela worms in my shrimp tank with my “The SHRIMPSONS Family”,I don’t mind the detritus worms or the copepods (cyclops) so much but I’m real unsure about the rhabdo’s,especially as I have babies in my shrimp tank.
      I honestly cannot thank you enough for making and posting this video,there’s sadly not many videos that include shrimps behaviours so I really love your video and have subscribed and added to my saved playlist x

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  4 года назад

      It shouldnt really matter that much...if they have white sand...you may have males choosing yellow females over red ones and if you had dark substrate you may see more yellow males seeking red females....take a black and white picture of the shrimp and tank and see which strain is closest to the substrate and hardscape....likely that would show you how they'd choose a mate that camouflages well.cherrs

    Just bought a pair of ghost shrimp to put in with my new pea puffer, much larger because I wanted them to survive and eat the food he leaves behind. Well one has a clutch of eggs underneath it’s beating around that looks like it may drop at any moment, and the other is spastic and swimming around like crazy and attacked my puffer! I’m not even sure what to do, my previous ghost shrimp were smaller but usually tried to hide and were more chill. The female is pretty stationary, but do I have to worry?

      By the way, I wasn’t even sure what was what as far as the cluster under her until I looked it up and found this. Do they fall out from the front of the body? Because it looks like she is going to spit them out from an opening in the front.

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  3 года назад

      Great question! For all non-larval species AKA "Higher Order Crustaceans" Instantly the eggs are waiting in the ovaries, then they are released and as they exit her body, they are matched with a bundle of sperm that the male has handed off... and once the eggs are out of her body and held by her swimmerettes, then she is carrying fertile eggs

    I just saw one of my red female shrimp laying eggs (looking like mini grapes) I even took a video, 3-4 felt to the ground and like 30 were hanging on some plants, that was around noon and by night they were gone, they looked just like eggs and what I have been founding on line looks like the female gives birth to already hatched shrimp, so what could happen to the eggs were layered ? Maybe were not fertilized ? Thanks 🤔🍁

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  2 года назад

      I've never seen them do that (first hand) but she won't have the eggs unless they are fertilized first, but stress or genetic defects can cause them to release the eggs (even a big water change could stress them sometimes). But some people report putting them in an egg Tumbler for 2 or 3 weeks and hatching the eggs themselves...hope that helps a bit. Good luck!
