  • Starting down the route of the standard type, 21 knots is all anyone is ever going to need, right?

Despite 100% engine efficiency being the minimum value for a idea engine, having it at least 60~70% is enough to give you the buffs, so don't worry if it goes a little under 100%.
By the way, most of the foward or aft weight offset at 1900~1920s come from the casemates that sit on the extreme bow or stern.

Good to know. I'm going by the "yellow" indicator in game for "this probably needs fixing" so far.
I've noticed that casemates are inordinately heavy, those will go in the first refit, If I can find space for turrets. I like having "not ideal" ships for my starting navy.

I recommend changing your New York I think if you make it longer but make the draft less you should be able to make it more accurate and also the New York class had be refitted in the 1920s

Yes, I'm very much planning to refit the original designs as part of the campaign. Unfortunately, the only way to extend the ships is to increase the displacement, and at some point, that can get a little excessive.
I did note down that the New York refit moves the middle turret behind the secondary mast, so that might be a way to fit that in, otherwise, we'll leave it at an 8-gun ship (she's the oldest series in service anyway, and they can usually work ok as coastal defence ships). We'll see how it goes.
First order of business is going to be having a conversation with Congress about finances...
