  • Motorcycles flying down the winding public roads of the Isle of Man at unimaginably fast and dangerous speeds...Over 260 people (including spectators) have been killed over 112 years of this racing tradition, yet it hasn't been banned. What exactly is the Isle of Man TT and how come tens of thousands of people come to watch these daredevils potentially crash and burn every year?

Can't remember who said it but a reason is unlikely to be banned is that the acknowledgement of the risk.

I don't think so. There are laws and legislations against probable or likely deaths from certain activities regardless of signing waivers. The reason it isn't banned is not because there's a waiver or understanding of risk, but that the Isle of Man wants money in exchange for people's passion. Hence why the athletes are paid so lowly in prize money despite the tournament netting over $30m for the organisers. Think about it this way: people aren't legally allowed to engage in activities likely to bring them death in all other parts of the world. Only the Isle of Man allows it.

@@XC-Z-cv8qw They continue to allow the racing since it is tradition, and the IoM is PROUD of their traditions. The TT and Irish Road Racing is the last link to the old prewar world of motorsport where you risk everything. Even when the TT wasn't raking in £30 million a year directly, they ran it. The economic arguments that came in later just make sure that debate is shut down completely. Also when it comes to the prize money, £18k for a single race is HIGHLY unusual in Europe. We just don't give prize money of that scale.

Got family on the Isle that shed a different light on it. As great and wild as the race is, a lot of residents I'm told leave for TT week because the course is public roads, and they are shut for race sessions as well as the noise and disruption the TT brings, and, yes, there's not a whole lot of roads on the Isle of Man.
It also hosted the Manx Rally as well, and having been around the course, in a car, at the speed limit that was scary enough especially when it started raining or the fog closed in as you get further around. I was only doing 30 mph, in a car at that. I don't even want to know what it would be like on a bike and have it suddenly start raining or a fog bank moving on in out of nowhere. TT riders are a special breed of really really ballsy and fearless. Adrian Archibald's on board lap from the mid 2000s is still one of the most incredible bits of riding, ever. 200 mph past the Creg-ny-Baa

That was a lie, the lack of racing didn't cost the island 246 million. That was the estimated cost of the whole pandemic. It would like saying that me no longer working at my old job costed my town all the losses during the pandemic. And all it took was reading the article's entire headline, rather than misquote it.

I'm not sure I understand anyone's desire to get this race banned. Especially since it has been stripped of its Grand Prix status, the IoM TT is its own thing, and all participants and attendees are willing to participare and well aware of the dangers involved.

AM I'm gonna guess you're not a motorcycle rider, which will probably help you live longer, but if you don't have that thing in you that drives you to get on a bike and ride it's hard to understand. Something about the raw experience of being inches from bare pavement while doing triple digits and feeling the liquid sensation of the wind peeling around you is just... otherwise indescribable.
I'm not crazy enough to do Isle of Man but I'd bet for the riders, the acknowledged risk that you're doing something so incredibly dangerous is worth getting to experience that in a way that few people ever really will.

I am a motorcycle rider and you couldn’t pay me to race the TT. Something I have in common with some actual motorcycle racers.
(Okay, probably for like a billion pounds I’d do it, but it’d take unimaginable wealth).
Motorcycles are dangerous, but how you ride has a very significant impact on how dangerous it is. Entering the TT once is roughly as dangerous as an entire LIFETIME of riding. And that’s including all the idiots that ride drunk or split lanes at double the speed limit.

I'm not a motorbike rider, but love racing in general. I'd be pretty much up to try any form of motorsport. But the one thing that I'd be too scared to even try is the TT or a Superbike at somewhere like the NW200.

It's always about money and always will be, so as long as we rely on it to run our society. On top of that, the people that died are all adults quite capable of assessing the situation and deciding whether or not it's a good idea to partake...if they choose to go and ignore the warnings all over the place, then there is nobody else to blame but them. Nobody is forcing them to race...I'm sorry if anyone lost a loved one during this event but don't blame the event itself, blame your loved one for risking their life for a meaningless cause.

    • @LuizAlexPhoenix
      @LuizAlexPhoenix Месяц назад +1

I mean, the organizers have an obligation to reduce risks. Letting amateurs run during Sunday in the middle of everyday citizens is also crazy, are you gonna tell the inhabitants that they chose to risk their lives?
At least, they should be getting a paid holiday to stay at home, which would only be fair as a way to share the gains. Even then, someone still needs to drive to work, hospital or something. After all, life doesn't stop for the event.

    • @mikereynolds1368

Residents should get paid for the entire event.
Iirc the video said the event brings in £250 to £350 million? Every resident should get a fair cut and/or a vacation during the entire event paid for by the event at the very least.
It's silly to expect anyone but essential workers to drive to work during amateur day. During the actual race they have to close the roads to the public right?
