The Oddly Dark & Fascinating World of Sturgeon Spearing

    Every February, Lake Winnebago in Wisconsin, USA freezes over and a thousands of shanties and 4WDs appear on the ice. Swimming slowly in the water are sturgeon, ancient fish that survived whatever wiped out the dinosaurs -- and on the ice are humans, with medieval-looking spears at the ready, hoping to catch one of these giant fish. Most spearfishers are here just for the sport, but there's something else about sturgeon that makes them very special: their eggs a.k.a. caviar. A small tin of caviar can cost hundreds of dollars, and where there's big money to be made, there's scamming.

    When you mentioned the use of shiny objects to attract the sturgeons, it reminded me of the currency on SpongeBob Battle for Bikini Bottom.

    I dont really quite understand why the bartering is illegal? They cant pay people to process it and the people who process it cant keep a little for themselves?

    • @TimHopp-ue6fe
      @TimHopp-ue6fe 6 месяцев назад +3

      You can pay someone to make your eggs into caviar but you can't barter it's really weird. I guess they figure that if you pay someone it's easier to keep track of and less likely to have someone poach a sturgeon. It's really dumb. Same goes with smoking the sturgeon. We can pay someone to smoke our fish but we can't give them some fish to smoke it. I grew up about 30 mins from the lake that we can spear on and have done it all my life.

    Seems like a waste to just throw them away. As long as they’re not illegally selling the caviar it sounds fine to me. Waste of government money to prosecute these people.

      Theyre not thrown away theyre supposedly great eating from what I hear. Winnebago is stuffed with sturgeon also, theyre stilll very protected and thats the only season in the state where you can harvest them.

      the caviar scandal was ridiculous and it just seems like the DNR was looking for someone to make an example of so they could nip caviar bartering in the bud even if it's not the real problem the DNR is trying to prevent, but these fish are heavily endangered and these regulations are definitely needed despite the overreach some officials might use them to get up to. Unfortunately, like with any law, some politicians and judges will take their verdicts too far.

    Only just stumbled onto this channel a few days ago, lovely to see your faces so soon.
    I've been reading David Attenborough's book recently, it's genuinely bizarre to me that the law is going after these small-town communities just having a good time, as you noted victimlessly, while nothing seemingly can be done about the widespread destruction of ocean life.

    • @SECONDQUEST
      @SECONDQUEST 6 месяцев назад

      It's not victimless. They're literally breaking laws, and often time actively decreasing animal population.

    I grew up in wisconsin where I lived lake sturgeon numbers were in relatively good numbers. Spearing always seemed like a cultural/historic thing to me kind of like hunting with a flintlock. They are usually pretty easy to catch on hook and line under the dams, on the bottom similar to the way you fish for catfish.

      White sturgeon get that big lake sturgeon they don't really know how big they will get seeing as they've only been keeping records for so long. They really don't know how big a lake sturgeon can get. Biggest one in the Winnebago system was 214 pounds and they had tagged that same fish full of eggs and she was over 250.
