Tips on choosing an inflatable kayak to buy from the founder of Meetup group for inflatable kayak enthusiasts in Portland, OR
FIRST GROUP of kayaks (Thin Vinyl, cheap):
    Intex Challenger (urlzs.com/8NNu)
    Intex Explorer (urlzs.com/tcmz)
Ozark Trail (I have never tried this kayak, but it looks surprisingly good on the pictures urlzs.com/9amU)
Sea Eagle (I haven't tried this kayak, but it's a good brand, so I assume it's decent urlzs.com/vWFH)
SECOND GROUP (Vinyl encased in fabric, better performance, pain to dry)
    Advanced Elements (they have quite a few different kayaks urlzs.com/5UCN;
    urlzs.com/fYrN)
Aquaglide (quite a few models also. I've used Columbia a lot urlzs.com/rv1E)
    THIRD GROUP (Thick PVC material)
    Aquaglide (urlzs.com/jCYs)
    Sea Eagle (urlzs.com/m8NJ)
    Fully drop Stitch kayak (urlzs.com/F4LA)

The relationship thing, so true! I went on a 300km inflatable canoe trip with my ex, from the middle of France down the Loire all the way to the ocean. All in all it was an amazing vacation, but it showed us all aspects of our relationship that did not work.

The wife and I owned two Sevylor two seater kayaks for 2-3 seasons and thought they worked great for what they were. We would take 2-3 mile trips down our local river very often. Depending on the season there were many times the water level was very low and we would scrape bottom a lot with no problems. They both came with patch kits we never had to use. During the spring and early summer months when the river was deeper and faster there were many times we would bang up against sticks, logs, and boulders on the side and middle of the river with no problems. I like the 2-seaters to run solo with so I can pack a lot of gear. We sold them years later for about what we paid for them new. We moved on to hard shell kayaks but are now thinking of purchasing two budget inflatables for the portability aspect. Of course with all the low budget inflatables they don't track well at all which makes it a workout.

You bring up some good points! I would say that aside from the obvious safety issues, the main issue with cheap inflatable‘s is tracking and actually getting somewhere on the water. Or worse, getting somewhere, and not being able to get back....

This video needs to be seen way more. I literally laughed at the relationship tester part, vivid memory flashed back when my wife and I argued in a beautiful calm river. Also first buyers need to seriously consider the drying issue, as a 20kg AE kayak will turn out 30kg and imagine carrying that on a muddy hilly track back to your car. Don’t ever ask me how I knew that.

Thank you Jack. Thanks to your video I researched the "fully drop stitched" kayak? Unfortunately it is not sold in Belgium. But by looking up drop stitched I did come across paddle boards made in Europe that use that same technology. So thanks to you, I am since one week, a proud owner of a RED Paddel board Windsup. And I am loving it. I paddle it more sitting down for the moment (I should be buying a kayak paddle in fact :-) ) . Thanks again.

hi mate, highly recommend the Itiwit 3. We rarely use it for three of us, normally me and either of my daughters although it easily takes all 3 of us with safety kit and a picnic! We live near the sea and use it regularly on both flat and when the waves are maybe 2-3 feet. It’s also perfect for rivers, estuaries and my friend uses his in Scotland for overnight beach trips on sea lochs. It’s really tough, 5 minutes for our daughters to inflate and Decathlon now do an upgraded version which is tougher all round. You won’t go wrong with it or the 2man which we also have. Hope this helps, Den

45 years ago my fly fishing buddies (2) and I decided we were going to trash our military surplus blow up boats and get the smaller plastic boats. We planned to hike into the Bob Marshall Wilderness 30 miles and float out 30 miles on the South Fork of the Flathead.
I got a Sevylor K-79 kayak and my buddies both got the Sevylor oval style. Most important was the weight. Mine was 13 pounds and theirs was 11 pounds. They make great beds and we used our lungs to blow them up. You need a light tarp over your bed because the dew about 4 am is equivalent to about 1/2 inch of rainfall. We used a 3/4 size canoe paddle which makes a good hiking stick. Every year for 10 years we used the same boats on the Blackfoot and several other rivers in Western Montana. I see that now they call it packrafting.
Sevylor were the pioneers in blow up boats and deserve credit.

Hello there! That was a pretty enlightening video. I am considering purchasing my 1st kayak and I intend to use it in the sea, going along the coast, with little or no wind. I am particularly interested in the 3rd category of kayaks. The PVC stuff. Does Aquaglide Chinook 120 fall into this category? Is it a trustworthy solution? In their website they say it is designed for lakes and rivers. Does that mean it can't be used in the sea? Thanks a lot.

I own 3 Sea Eagles. I have the Razorlite, the Fasttrack and the Needlenose 126 SUP. The Razor is my workhorse. I do up to 12 miles in it on open ocean. It is no where near as fast as a hard shell. I work harder than anyone in the group. It weathercocks in the wind. Take a shortened SUP paddle as back up because you will be paddling on one side the whole way. I am spending today fixing a puncture that happened at the dock. It scraped and somehow the seam tape came up and tore a tiny hole. Just enough to soften the chamber after two hours of paddling. Would I trade my Sea Eagles? Nope. They are American made, the service is amazing and only a freak incident will harm them.
Word on the inflatable SUPs. Get a drop stitched, high psi model. Mine is a 14 psi board. They are stiffer. The needlenose I have doesn’t have any rocker and flies. It goes farther per paddle stroke and doesn’t fight the water or waves. It’s a bit narrower and harder to learn on, but very rewarding when you do.

My sea eagle paddleski is awesome had it over ten years, used it allot and beat the heck out of it and it’s still like new. It can be configured for one or two people. You can wipe it down with towel pack it up and go. I am going to my wife and I razors next. You can’t beat the quality. In my opinion it is a great investment that I do not regret making. I’d rather be on the water enjoying it, than being miserable. Given a choice I’d rather not go at all rather than try to go in an unsafe blow up toy that is impossible to maneuver. I learned my lesson when I was a kid, Dave up my money and bought a blow up Vinyl boat..big mistake. Save up your money by a sea wale you will not regret it. Nothing to risk you have a year or two that you can send it back if you don’t like it!! Sometimes they do get returns and you an buy a used one from them with full warranty..I think I may try that if they have any when I go to buy the next one.

My buddy owns one, we used it twice and then somehow it got a puncture.. we aren't sure how it happened as we used it on an open flat water lake with no floating debris around. I use an Advanced Elements Sport Kayak with a backbone system (helps not create any drag/sag), its got aluminum ribs at the bow and stern to cut and track through water like a hard shell kayak.. its just as fast as one too and the whole kayak itself is covered with extra protection. J Baikoff could you comment where you think the Chelan fits in the kayak hierarchy against all the competition such the Advanced Explorer Convertablel Gumotex Sea Wave; Sea Eagle Fast Tracks and Explorers or any other brands I have overlooked; whether there is any other inflatable kayak the size of the XL, which ticks as many of the boxes? in UK, it is frustrating, as people either sell one brand or another (e.g. Gumotex Thaya), but has not tried the other brands. so you never get an all round view. any advice would be much appreciated. Want a high performing, durable family kayak, that can be used for exploring too. Plus, how has the quality of the Chelan stood up, as they are made in Asia and only have a one yr warranty in the UK.
Check out the Smart Pro tandem folding kayak. Supposed to only take 7 -15 mins to assemble and has a 5 yr warranty!

    • @inneradventures

There is a lot to unpack in your question. Chelan is one of the best kayaks I've ever tested. It's a great kayak. It has just two things against it: 1. Really annoying skeg design 2. The fact that there is Sea Eagle Razorlite for just little bit more money.
I see it as being pretty high quality and it performs well. But I personally would just pay a bit more and go for Sea Eagle Razorlite.

@@inneradventures Thanks for response... Does it perform as well as the Sea Eagle Fast track range..fRom pics, the Chelan looked like it was more comfortable in terms of seats? Would you say the Chelan are as well made, being only a one yr warranty? Why did you like the Chelan so much.. is it more suited to choppier or white water conditions compared with the Razorlite; as good at long journey for comfort?
the boat I originally considered was the Neris Smart Pro because it appears more sea worthy; a more serious expedition vessel. but the bits and bobs to put together (whilst only claiming to take 7 -15 minutes to assemble) and the extra money... I was not sure this would as comfortable a boat to own in terms of time and convenience..to use at short notice. Being used by kids.. You certainly get a lot of boat for the money and a 5 yr warranty. it also can stay afloat if the sponsons fail. Be interested in what you think of it.

The kayak itself was good, unfortunately the bag arrived unstitched, the Velcro foot rest has already come apart, and the soft breathable membrane on the seats are not durable enough for wearing buoyancy jackets. The reply I got from the retailer was that it was supposed be more comfortable against the skin. I said you’re supposed to wear buoyancy jackets when you’re on a kayak, to keep you alive!

Apparently though the mid-tier inflatable kayaks, the one with cloth like material as the second layer are incredibly hard to dry and more prone to fungus in between the layers because water gets in it. Not really recommended. Either go cheap because it's going to give you plenty of kayaking experience or if you're really serious go for the 3rd tier expensive ones and obviously you would be buying the inflatable ones because you don't have a vehicle/gear/space to carry hard kayaks.

I'm still pretty new to kayaking, but i watched this video before I bought my Intex explorer k2 and i gotta say...
You seem really critical of the cheaper boats to the point you almost sound like you're promoting the more expensive ones. other than better boats=ore expensive. I don't meanany disrespect but, compared to every other inflatable boat I've ever purchased, and every one i currently own the k2 is made of a far thicker material. I am on the water in it at least once a week, generally more and it has held up to myself, my spouse and equipment going just past it's weight limit a few times a week woth absolutely no issues, and it tracks just fine even in waves and wind, we paddle on one of texas' biggest lakes. It is slower than a hardshell but even with both of us trying they are hard to tip. Obviously if only one of us is in it, it's faster and easier to paddle but I would put it against any other kayak in the world for handling open water and waves. It's not gonna win a race and it's not the best choice for whitewater or rapids, bit there are plenty of videos out there of it handling tough class 3 and 4 rapids just fine. You don't have to osend hundred of dollars to have a great kayak. I got mine for $40 as well, and if something ever happens to it, I buy another just like it. Like I said I'm no professional and I am still fairly new to the sport, and maybe after I have years of experience my mind will be changed bit I doubt it. The k2 is the single best value kayak out there and it's safe, reliable, stable and handles well enough in waves, wakes and wind I could be out in it all day. I would trust this kayak with my kids lives I can't say that about a hardshell or about that drop stitched inflatable.
