I disagree with those that state this video is a sales pitch. I find explanations of gear such as a rudder, which I don't have, but see on kayaks, helpful. Now I know why some have them, and I know that don't need one. So, excellent tip, Ken. Also, if you regard a life vest tip as a "sales pitch", well remember, a life vest is cheaper than a coffin.
Robert Allen the principal reason when they shuffle loose this mortal coil I'm going to be ironic and bury elderly relatives in a life preserver.

@@gracecarter3959 thanks, it's good!
Jokes on you Robert. If I die for not having life vest, I won't be buying my coffin. So, I still save money on life vest.
Yeah, the biggest sales pitch here was that upper body power stroke. I mean he’s obviously trying to sell...um...uh....
I've spent many years paddling and wish you all as much fun and fitness as I've had. Use your common sense to keep as safe as you can whilst in a dangerous environment, wether it's tides, cold or heat. Love, peace and happy paddling.
Just getting back into kayaking after many years. Went on a trip last weekend and was on the water for five hours. Was a little tired and sore the day after but the workout was worth it as well as the nature therapy that came with it. Can't wait for my kayak to show up so I can get back to it.
I went for 15 minutes and I'm almost dead.
Just purchased my first kayak and, although I have a little previous water experience and have purchased all necessary safety equipment, the videos were so clear and informative.
Thank you for the well thought out work and descriptions.
🙏❤✌
Glad the videos helped! Congrats on your first kayak! Good times ahead :)
1. rudder
2. capsizing
3. roof rack
4. torso rotation while paddling
5. be safe (dont get drunk, wear a life jacket, dress appropriately)
Here is Missouri getting drunk and kayaking go hand in hand lol
@@Dirtwhistlegristle Invest in a second life jacket then. Just in case :)
@@Dirtwhistlegristle found the problem, bro. It should be beer in hand. Hand in hand requires you to put your drink down. That’s a no-no!!! 😜
I wasn't using my rudder correctly, this is something that I needed to learn.
Great video.
Am planning to go kayaking this weekend in County Donegal, Ireland and it's years since I've done it so has been very helpful to get a quick heads up before I go out with my instructor. Thanks
no problem bro
When they zoomed out overhead of those people kayaking with no land in sight 😳
drinking and paddling sounds amazing
I've done it a lot and still havent flipped my boat.
It is amazing, bud
I'd rather smoke weed and paddle. Which is what I always do. lol.

I loved watching your video. It is really helpful for the beginners. Keep posting more such videos.
Great tips for an awesome, super fun activity.
The video is old, but it's still up to date and current. Thanks for the inspiration. Nice shots and movie.
Stay adequately hydrated, and sun smart, are two more of my basic rules.
Good advice.
I love it. The dogs are so cute and well-behaved. The music was awesome. I'm definitely coming to the beautiful Wakulla soon!
Great video. The biggest reason I chose an inflatable kayak instead of s hardshell, besides price, was that they are so much harder to flip and far easier to get back into. They have their drawbacks, for example mine is a 2 person kayak so it's a little heavier, a little slower than most, and it is definitely susceptible to being pushed around by the wind, though it's not bad, not nearly as bad as an inflatable row boat. There is a small island in the lake i paddle at that is swimming distance from where I launch bit the boating lane is between my launch area and the island so I have to be extra careful that no boats are anywhere around before I head toward it. My kayak is bright yellow and my life vest is bright orange so I'm pretty visible but I don't like to assume i can be seen, never know what idiot decided to drink and boat. I've practiced falling out of the kayak and getting back in both in water where i could reach, and in water above my head. also have anyone who will be in the kayak woth me practice it, and practice helping each other. Never carry much gear beyond my car keys and phones, they stay in water proof case that floats. My vests also have loud whistles on them and we don't go out on open water if the wind is higher than 15 mph gusts, or if the wind is pushing south of my launch location. Those are things I do to make sure we stay safe. I've also learned even with the wind and waves pushing the right direction it can still be harder to get back than you think. Last time we went out, we paddles into the wind the entire time so we could let the wind help is get back easier when we were more tired. Well we turned around to head back and the wind stopped entirely. We made it back in half the time it took to head out but we had to paddle hard for the entire time, as opposed to a leisurely pace on the way out, against the wind. Maybe just because it didn't Feel like we were going very fast, I don't know.
I’m from New Orleans , Iont want no gator to pop my shit and leave me assed out and gator food lol
Thank you for the tips. I am going on a 15 mile kayak trip with my boy scout troop and I look forward using these tips

Tip #3... Co-worker and I just found a very nice kayak in the ditch off the highway a couple of weeks ago.
OUTSTANDING video. Excellent done
Glad you enjoyed it
Recommend a fold down J-Rack that fits into your garage and doesn't need to be taken on/off, add expandable lanyard with Velcro to paddle and then clip to kayak, and use Rivet gun with special Kayak rivets to attach your accessories.
Loving the Vibrams
More good information, thanks!
Very well done.
Good clear video...thanks.
I never go out without my "stirrup" A rope knotted in an 8 of which one part is snugly looped around the cockpit and the other part is folded on the forward deck. When in the water and having attached the floating device to one end of my paddle and the other pushed underneath the webbing vertically to the kayak, I now take the folded up top half of the 8 and push it underwater under my feet. Leaning on the paddle and stepping onto the loop makes re-entry very easy rather than trying to hoist my body in the kayak. It acts like a stepping stone and it works.
How long is your stirrup? I realize that it partly depends on the size of the cockpit opening, but how deep in the water should the stirrup go when used to re-enter? Thanks.
It’s a canoe
I’ve got a rope ladder with plastic rings. Made for sailboats but I clip to a road around the coaming. Its 4 steps. I reach across the cock pit and put weight on my arms as I step up. For narrower cockpits, straddle the boat then slide in. For larger cockpits, step right in. I’ve been meaning to put a float on it. I’m (cough) on my third one....
Great tips for all kayakers, I Love Kayaking...
Same going in 2 days
I’m going tomorrow
xDj_XDx awesome, have fun!!
Only thing beginners learned from this video is that kayaking is more expensive and in depth than they thought and that’s entirely not true. I have a $500 setup: 10 ft. Pelican kayak (yes Pelican), a few accessories like a paddle holder, small anchor with cleat, basic paddle, foam roof rack with ratchet straps to tie it down, nice pair of lightweight shirt and shorts. Will these last forever? Of course not, but for someone young and on a budget it’s given me years of enjoyment. Don’t let someone tell you that you need to get this kayak and that paddle and a rudder. You will still have fun whether you spend a little or a lot.
Excellent advice. My daughters each have their own kayaks, and probably under $500 each. I’m probably $800-900 in for my kit.
Thanks for video info!
Thanks. I'm about to get into this wonderful sport and just needed some final motivation :)

I learned to listen to to the weather forecast and never get caught in a big storm !! My kayak filled up half way from rain in a matter of minutes thankfully I was pushed to shore from strong winds and got out before it sank ..
Tip number 1: Don't die.
Yeah. Completely agree with this. I did that once and it completely ruined my trip.
CAElite I've made this mistake on my last 6 trips now.
I always stop after the 12 pack is gone
Cheers for the info
I died.
I‘ll surely will bring a beer when kayaking
As long as I'm wearing a life jacket I think I can comfortably have a beer for sure
Great tips. Thank you Sir!
You are welcome!
Thank you for the video guys. One thing you messed up, it is a wonderful thing to have a beer on the river in your kayak, it isn’t against the law except in some places and God has said “wine gladdens the heart of man.”
The appropriate statement would be, “don’t get drunk on your kayak.”
Getting drunk is foolish and will lead to great suffering of many kinds but alcohol is a blessing especially in scenic and peaceful places that you might find while kayaking.
Beer. Because none of the best stories start with a salad.
Good lesson
Great info!
was excited i didnt even bother looking up. would have a better experience
You guys got it specially the part that things can go wrong real fast and your training and equipment is the only thing that will safe your life specially with waves off shore
Better to always be prepared!
I appreciate the tips in this video, some are universal. I'm looking for tip on better & more efficient sea kayaking.

Love the cooler as flotation device...
Good advice
Just went with a friend of mine for my first time and let me tell you the conditions were not very good strong winds and rough waters without a life jacket 😬 never been so sacred in my life the waves were rough but it was a great time nonetheless.
Just bought my first kayak woo hoo let’s go! 😁

what is a good life vest. I lie the inflatable. Is their a limit to persson size / weight?
- but I like getting a good buzz and doing outdoors activities lol
Awesome.
solid video! but is it normal for beginners to experience a lot of muscle burn in the mostly front part of the shoulders even when using decent hip/torso thrusting?
Hi Chris, if you're just starting out it could be normal, as these are muscles you don't use very often in day to day life. However, if it's persistent, it may be worth seeing a physiotherapist or even talking to some seasoned paddlers to check your technique!
I love paddleTV!!!
And PaddleTV loves you! Thanks for watching! :)

Yep white water kayaking is a very safe sport
Says who?
Thank you for video
i find paddling high is quite challenging too haha
If you've been a canoe paddler, it's a hard practice to change.
richard sharp i only paddle high.
Actually, most sea kayaks have skegs to keep your boat from weather cocking. Skegs have a couple advantages over rudders. If you are in waves, waves from behind can lift your rudder out of the water making it less effective. A skeg is a couple feet forward under the boat. Second, if you are playing in rocks, it's easy to break a rudder hanging off the back of the boat.
Should the pulling arm in a forward stroke remain straight from catch to release?
Нет ! Не должен! Для обучения технике гребли ищите видео в котором гребут веслом с разворотом лопастей , примерно 75 градусов!
Все видео с веслами без разворота лопастей обучают неправильной технике!
Cool. And. Fun
Torso rotation is something i do when I feel like it. If I slept too little the night before I may not bother for awhile, until at least I have placed my hands at the proper spacing on the paddle. Lazy paddler.....
Question May 15th, 2018. Hope someone checks in. Just bought a sit on top self bailing with scupper holes. I prefer to sit in a dry kayak with our cold water lakes in Oregon. There was also a little water in the interior storage compartment, which I would like to be more waterproof. DO YOU THINK it is wise to plug the scupper holes permanently and will that keep the interior dry? I would rather attach stabilizers than tip over unintentionally when kayak camping. Thanks!
Thanks! My God is Yahweh too!
I thought I wanted a rudder then I tried one wasn't keen on the flipflopping pedals when I wanted to paddle a little harder then I tried a swift kayak with a skeg and loved it. Less skeg less resistance so you only use as much as you have too. Normally not more than 1/3 skeg. I now have a Swift Saranac15 LV (low volume) and a Saranac 14 LV both with skegs.
Agree. Prefer skegs to rudders.
Always keep ur kayak loaded with beer
Richard Huffman damn straight
I prefer weed. More magic.

not smart. This is why people need to smoke weed instead. Alcohol is the real killer.
Sounds fun 😂

What are them shoes you have on your feet
I have one question and hope to get your kind reply. In case I am in a see on my kayak and all of a sudden a strong wind start with a high waves, in which direction I should move the kayak i.e. with or against the wind and wave directions. Hope to receive your answer. If there is an instruction video, please put the link in your reply. Thank you in advance.
This just my thoughts. Im not a professional or an instructor. But, I’ve done a lot of dumb things, and lived to tell about it...Personally, I’d want two things at once. The wind behind me, and point straight towards the best landing. It’s not likely to get both and you may have neither. If the wind is perpendicular to your preferred direction, I’d suggest working at 45* angle. You may want to “tack” like in sailing. Ie, if the wind is from the north and you want to go west, start northwest, then southwest, back to northwest then southwest again, etc. you’ll generally go west, without having the wind 90 degrees to your hull. if that’s a real risk, get a yak with a skeg. Also at least one water tight hull section behind a bulkhead. Keep supplies on hand so if a storm forces you to beach away from your preferred landing, you can make a decent time of it. Snacks, communication devices, emergency supplies. Etc. best of luck!
@@just-dl Отличньіе советьі! Говорю, как мастер спортивной гладкой гребли!
I specially bought rope, styrofoam, and Duct-tape for my roof😉
My kayak dosnt have a bulk head but it does have foam in the rear is that enough to keep it afloat if I was to flip or somthing
That’s what the foam is for, to keep it afloat if you swamp it.
You can get an inflatable insert for rough water.
Need a video about kayaking in sea, snakes in the waters.....
How often do people fall out of these things?
Need a video about kayaking in FL with sharks, alligators, snakes in the waters.....
always carry 2 paddles ;One has a narrow blade for low angle cruising between the barrier islands and the mainland The other has a wide blade for high angle paddling in and out of inlets and for going under bridges where the combination of rebounding boat wakes and the natural Venturi effect can create some really chaotic conditions that you will want to quickly escape from.I secure my extra paddle w/Yak Clips ...nice productFlorida is the land of the shallow water wave which behaves very differently than deep water waves do I've honestly never had a problem paddling with gators , sharks and snakes in the water .Although I have been known to start singing Rock the Boat when a big gator pops up and says Hi Maybe it's an illusion But I would feel very uncomfortable paddling a sit on top kayak thru waters with gators in it
didn't need to hear that (about gators and sit on tops).....
Didn't mean to freak you out But it is what it is
A couple of years ago I was in my Pungo 14 paddling across the north shore of West Lake Everglades NP at the end of a very long day that began at Alligator Creek Campsite
Daylight was fading fast and the weather was turning to crap equally fast ( see shallow water waves )
When the alligators slid into the water and swam out to say Hi ,it was nice to know that I could roll the Pungo over 45 degrees brace it and stay in the yak .
I wouldn't dream of doing that in a Tarpon 14 bc I probably would end up in the water
Not good
Not good at all
Kayaking looks easy in videos, but it's much harder than that. It takes a lot of upper body especially shoulders strength. And navigating through the wind is a pain in the ass.
The sit in kyuacks my hips are like 46 inches around will I be able to or am I too big for the boat? My brother told me I was too big for the boat I was offended
You'll fit comfortably in some sit in kayaks. Sea kayaks tend to be narrower than 'recreational' kayaks, and so I would try out some different recreational sit in kayaks.
Heads up! NICE RACK at 2:50
Wisdom for free !!
so its not ok to kayak the drake passage?
#2bis wear a lifejacket for tutorial too!!
Great video but I cannot understand the fashion trend for blue lifejackets and coats. Quite a few years ago now Henri Lloyd sailing jackets were teal and white, wave coloured!
As long as they keep you afloat, right?
@@ChristelVinot You'll be seen in a swimming pool. However, you'll likely be using the same pfd for all your paddling. It is more likely to be of use in the worst conditions, possibly at sea. Not being funny here, but how visible do you find cyclists wearing "safety black" ?
I don't think blue or dark lifejackets are a great safety idea. Am I alone here? Good video though.
They still keep you afloat. Better than nothing. And unless you're in the ocean, I wouldn't imagine bright colors would make much of a difference in whatever situation you find yourself in.
Did anyone else see that guys balls when it was showing you how to get in the yak out of the water? I was laughing way too hard at this
Hellz yeah. T-t-t-t-tasty tasty!
is there a kayak rutter thats compatible with a inflatablle kayak?
I've never heard of one. Some inflatables have removable skegs instead of rudders though.
Paddle with a friend and have fun!
I would like to do this in the Dead Sea ,
I’m gonna go kayak tomorrow wish me luck guys
my God is Yahweh I went kayaking today and it was fun lol (I didn’t expected that)

So I just did 37 miles on my wal mart kayak a couple days ago and I definitely broke all three of those rules... life vest was under me for extra cushion, had a beer every couple of hours, and definitely should have covered my legs to keep from sunburn...but the rudder probably would've helped with the wind.
We knew everything we needed to know when you said "wal mart kayak".
@@NYpaddler don’t be a snob. Finding a decent kayak for under $500 isn’t easy. And Pelican, which Walmart sells, has good options. Not everyone has 2-3 grand to toss out there.
now if you live in florida watch for gators water mockesins bullsharks and worse of all airboats and waverunners
And most of all, watch out for Florida man
Dude you just assumed that we would be using a sit on top kayak. But it's all good, still good to watch for all the Gerry's

Another important note: Always check the weather before going out.
