I can pretty much guarantee you that those people would have still killed people if they were never introduced to video games. Maybe sooner in life because they didn't have an outlet for their emotions, or maybe slightly later in life because violent acts had never occured to them and they don't use any form of media.
I was raised on some very violent video games but I still turned out alright I also spent a lot of my childhood listening to underground hip hop I still do and I turned out ok i think it's extremely bad parenting that leads kids to commit horrible crimes but I can almost guarantee that it isn't due to video games

Whats ironic is that Gta 5 was banned based on a complete lie. The feminists made the game sound as if its some sort of woman killing simulator, something of which you can easily see is not true by just playing the damn game. Never throughout the course of the game has the player been forced to even hit a female NPC, only a single female in the Story died and it was not even intentional as she was sucked into a jet engine. With men however the player kills thousands upon thousands of them as they progress through the game, even going as far as torturing a guy during one of the missions. They also flipped shit over the prostitution and and strippers when both is nothing more than gimmicks in the game that people don't really bother with. For example in Gta Online I reached rank 277 and in that time I only ever seen someone messing with prostitutes once or twice, the same for the strip club. I could count them with my fingers. When people need health in the game they either eat the snacks in their inventory or go to the nearest location where they know a soda machine is. As its quicker, easier, and just frankly more efficient than using a prostitute ever would, cause again its just meant to be a gimmick, not a primary source of recovering lost health. Quite frankly the players in free roam are way more interested in shooting the shit out of each other than anything else, but what do I know right? I am just a gamer whos actually played the damn game and know everything that happens in it.
Back in the ps2 days the GTA crime system was much funnier. You could kill 100's of civillians using bazooka's and even a Helicopter and the police did next to nothing. But if you happen to mess with the police, even an accidental 2mph shunt into their car and all of a sudden...... "Calling all forces, calling all forces, someone just bumped my squad car" the whole police force comes.... and if you kill one to escape, govt. agencies and even the military will come after you.

While I agree that Peta does go overboard on many things such as Pokemon and Cooking Mama, I do feel that if it was a scene in the game and not just some random thing you can do, it does promote animal violence in a way. I had pet rats and they're actually worthwhile animals to keep around. Smart little things.

Someone watching that rat die could make the connection subconsciously "If my favorite game makes it seem like killing rats is fine, then it is probably fine in real life too. Teacup Subject A The best thing that you may want to reconsider that opinion is world of warcraft. In that game players are actively encouraged to kill people and animals, to mercilessly maim, trap and kill animals and rip their bodies apart for food, leather, fur and even their blood, and that's just the general stuff, nevermind the quests that specifically send you to annihilate huge swaths of living things found in real life. That game has millions of current players and millions more who have quit, in an age range from pre-teen to 70's. If video games were the cause, there would've been a massive spike in violent acts against damn near everything since 2004.
You're missing that one thing in GTA V about taking a school hostage and committing terrorist acts being taken out because of Sandy Houk. It would have been released with that shit in it lol.

They tell stories, guess novels can't be art, they depict landscapes and emotional pictures, guess painting can't be art, they use music in just the right ways to draw emotion out of the player, I guess music can't be art, they develop the characters and allow the player to be the person they play, guess acting and plays can't be art. I guess art just isn't real.
Some video games actually have some of the most impressive art I have ever seen. Zelda Windwaker, Okami, and so much more. I only wish to reach that level of beauty when I draw.
i am an honor roll student and im in a special algebra class where i get high school credits and im only in 8th grade. all my friends are in differant algebra classes too. we all play videogames like gta 5, tf2, cod, battlefield, and so on. the jocks at my school play games on their phones and that pretty much it. they bullie me and my friends and we do nothing. they are mostly getting bad grades and no one cares now, who is more violent?
Please look for the context on some of these. The one about the adoption joke in Portal 2 was completely blown out of proportion by the media. The father complained because he had adopted kids and that caused discomfort for them, and while for adults is easy to not take it seriously because it's the bad guy saying it, it's not really the same for a small child. And the dad in question wasn't *that* angry, he said himself that aside from that he and his kids love the game and that he didn't want to make a big fuss about it, but of course the medie edited his interview to erase the parts where he says that and act like Valve is the Earthly manifestation of Beelzebub.
The controversy that pissed me off the most was the whole "video games aren't art" thing. Because thanks to that, an age of "NO! THIS GAME HAS NO DEEPER MEANING! IT'S JUST IDIOTIC FUN!" swept through the industry. Now the games media and developers feel like they need to be philosophers, and that only the new Citizen Kane of video games is allowed on shelves. Seriously, remember Gone Home? The game with zero gameplay, and yet got critically acclaimed despite being a pretentious fuckfest of nothing? When people say that video games can't be art because they have no deeper meaning, just tell them "Human Centipede" and walk away.

I managed to convince my mom to let me play an M-rated game that my dad got for me when I was younger. Predator: Concrete Jungle had difficulty levels called 'blooded' and 'unblooded'. I made her think it actually meant that the game had either blood or no blood. Unfortunately, the ruse did not cover the swearing in the game, and my mom walked right into the room as a human exclaimed "What the f*ck is that thing?!"

I've played at least 24 hours of in game matches of Battlefield 3 and never knew you could kill a rat. I guess I was more worried about the sniper across the map killing me over and over than I was about the rats running around.
It's a shame controversy doesn't affect many anime which is saying something. In video games, you have people killing each other quickly and most of the people you kill don't suffer. In Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni, some characters are relatable and end up torturing or killing people closest to them. Now, which would you expect to create criminals of the future? The relatable, torture one? No, that's anime and anime is only for kids. So a media that is supposedly aimed at children can have torture, related characters, relatable events and murder but a game that is aimed at a audience over the age of 17 can't have unrelatable events, quick, almost painless murder. It's good to see the creators of controversies use logic that if a violent aimed at adults, it's overly violent but if a violent anime, which non anime watchers would assume is for children, is fine.
You know what I think is a really dumb controversy? It's how Tawna was removed from the Crash Bandicoot series because she was too inappropriate for a family game. That may have had something to do with her appearance and all, but from my point of view, she had everything covered.

In Pokémon, you can grind Slowpoke for some experience points. Attacking. Fighting. Killing. Grinding. Experience points. Levelling up. Grind critters.
The walking dead game is far more thought provoking than some paint slapped around on a canvas. It shows the human condition and asks how far will you go to save yourself, and has an amazing graphical style, Much better than a painting of a guys face.
I don't get why parents get so upset over the content of video games. Do they read the rating? My parents would look at the ratings of games when I was a kid. I wasn't allowed to play games like Grand Theft Auto, but I don't think Rockstar's intended audience is 8 year olds. Those ratings are there for a reason. If it says the game contains nudity, don't get mad when your kid sees a naked girl or guy.
San Andreas' Hot Coffee was considered a violation of the terms of the ESRB. The existence of the code on disk demanded that the content be included in the rating. With that content added, the game would be AO, which as we know from the recent Hatred is considered a death sentence...
By today's standards, Night Trap is incredibly tame. During the congressional hearings, a Nintendo representative said something to the effect of "There will never be a game like Night Trap on a Nintendo system." Fast-forward about 10 years, and Resident Evil 4 (a MUCH more violent game) was released on the Nintendo GameCube. Goes to show how much times change.

Roger Ebert was known to voice his opinions very bluntly and at times apologize for misrepresenting his feelings as ultimatums. "Video games can never be art" was one of them, and he made several basic logical blunders such as presuming that every game needs to be "won" to be appreciated and that a Romeo and Juliet game with the option of a happy ending (i.e. winning) would necessarily completely invalidate any artistic merit of the story. He would later basically backpedal with "I guess they're art in a non-traditional sense". Even a very well-polished and beautiful game like Okami has yet to reach the level of absolute wonder that we see from classical art.

The violence is okay, nudity is not mentality has always been weird to me. There are people that will absolutely say they are more comfortable seeing a person ripped in half than a totally tame bedroom scene. And I was one of these people. My parents bought me Mortal Kombat for my third birthday. I watched all manner of violent movies and played violent games growing up. So really violent stuff in media is nothing special to me. But even now, I secretly feel kinda awkward whenever there's a romance scene in any kind of medium. Meanwhile I can watch someone be disemboweled while eating a delicious cheeseburger and having a casual conversation. Personally, if I had kids, I probably wouldn't want them playing super violent or overly sexual games. At least not until I felt they were mature enough. Since we're discussing PETA in this list, I think it was a bad idea to not mention their reactions to Super Mario 3D Land and Super Mario 3D World. I mean, they attacked Nintendo under the impression that collecting a leaf or bell to earn a costume based on a raccoon dog or cat was promoting killing animals for furs, and in what universe does that even make sense?
If you list out every ridiculous protest PETA made you'd have no end to the video. This is the organization that claimed catgirls in anime encouraged people to abuse and rape animals. I've seen a ton of anime with cat-girls depicted anywhere from cute to hot, and not once have I or anyone I know who watches those anime thought that a cat looked like it'd be fun in bed.

In reference to #3 about PETA, apparently they started raising hell about Mario's Tanooki suit in Mario 3. Only took them about 20 years to notice that...and what about the frog suit or the turtles he was stomping? PETA really needs to pick their battles.
Bonus PETA blunder: Before the release of Super Meat Boy they got all up in a tizzy because he's "Meat Boy" and that glorifies red meat so they made one of their obnoxious clone games: Super Tofu Boy. Two problems with this: 1) Meat Boy is just a boy without skin, that's why his love interest is bandage girl. 2) Edmund McMillen and Tommy Refenes instigated this outrage on PETA's forums for a laugh and got more free publicity then they could ever imagine. They added Tofu Boy, who is completely worthless and can't beat over half the levels, to the PC version if you type in PETAPHILE as a code.

Okay, so I get why people got upset with number 10. If I was adopted, I would actually feel like a failure and I think they went to far with that joke.
The reason Hot Coffee created such a controversy was because its full data, while ordinarily inaccessible, still existed intact on the disc and therefore was still a part of the game that was adult content - but the ESRB had been told nothing about it and therefore had not considered it in their rating. As San Andreas was originally rated M (17+), this meant that Rockstar was, so far as the public was concerned, willfully distributing pornography to minors. The fact that this pornography was dummied out of the game and needed a specialized access method (i.e. mod) is irrelevant - it's no different from those old Dreamcast games that have pictures when you put them in a CD-ROM drive, except that the pictures are crude porn. Rockstar later re-released the game and removed the dummied content entirely, allowing them to keep their M rating.
Number 1 is the dumbest thing I ever heard video games have every piece of art in them! Music, drawing, and literature so this argument is not even valid there is no argument video games should be considered the king of art!
#1 definitely deserved to be on this list. No offense to the now-deceased Ebert but his statement was shot down years ago when Okami came out. Even today, games like Journey continue to prove that the medium can be taken seriously as an art-form.

the whole video game thing can be summed up simply as: • games don't make people violent, their upbringing, genetics, and experiences make people violent. • if you really do commit murder because of a video game, you were probably seriously disturbed and mentally ill before hand, and preventative measures should have been taken to ensure your illness was identified and treated professionally. • violence has been steadily declining since the inception of video games, and TV shows / movies are just as, if not more sexual and violent than games. • games with graphic and adult content have age labels on them. If you are scared your kid might kill somebody or hurt somebody because of a mature game, then don't buy them that game. Step up and take responsibility for your kid instead of forcing the rest of us to curtail our entertainment and bend to your ridiculous moral standards.

Whats ironic is that Gta 5 was banned based on a complete lie. The feminists made the game sound as if its some sort of woman killing simulator, something of which you can easily see is not true by just playing the damn game.
Never throughout the course of the game has the player been forced to even hit a female NPC, only a single female in the Story died and it was not even intentional as she was sucked into a jet engine.
With men however the player kills thousands upon thousands of them as they progress through the game, even going as far as torturing a guy during one of the missions.
They also flipped shit over the prostitution and and strippers when both is nothing more than gimmicks in the game that people don't really bother with. For example in Gta Online I reached rank 277 and in that time I only ever seen someone messing with prostitutes once or twice, the same for the strip club. I could count them with my fingers.
When people need health in the game they either eat the snacks in their inventory or go to the nearest location where they know a soda machine is. As its quicker, easier, and just frankly more efficient than using a prostitute ever would, cause again its just meant to be a gimmick, not a primary source of recovering lost health.
Quite frankly the players in free roam are way more interested in shooting the shit out of each other than anything else, but what do I know right? I am just a gamer whos actually played the damn game and know everything that happens in it.

Back in the ps2 days the GTA crime system was much funnier. You could kill 100's of civillians using bazooka's and even a Helicopter and the police did next to nothing. But if you happen to mess with the police, even an accidental 2mph shunt into their car and all of a sudden......

Things can promote other things without being real. Commercials do it all the time, giving false scenarios involving their products to get them to sell. And people buy. Someone watching that rat die could make the connection subconsciously "If my favorite game makes it seem like killing rats is fine, then it is probably fine in real life too. The best thing that you may want to reconsider that opinion is world of warcraft. In that game players are actively encouraged to kill people and animals, to mercilessly maim, trap and kill animals and rip their bodies apart for food, leather, fur and even their blood, and that's just the general stuff, nevermind the quests that specifically send you to annihilate huge swaths of living things found in real life.
That game has millions of current players and millions more who have quit, in an age range from pre-teen to 70's. If video games were the cause, there would've been a massive spike in violent acts against damn near everything since 2004.
You're missing that one thing in GTA V about taking a school hostage and committing terrorist acts being taken out because of Sandy Houk. It would have been released with that shit in it lol.

Please look for the context on some of these. The one about the adoption joke in Portal 2 was completely blown out of proportion by the media. The father complained because he had adopted kids and that caused discomfort for them, and while for adults is easy to not take it seriously because it's the bad guy saying it, it's not really the same for a small child. And the dad in question wasn't *that* angry, he said himself that aside from that he and his kids love the game and that he didn't want to make a big fuss about it, but of course the medie edited his interview to erase the parts where he says that and act like Valve is the Earthly manifestation of Beelzebub.
The controversy that pissed me off the most was the whole "video games aren't art" thing. Because thanks to that, an age of "NO! THIS GAME HAS NO DEEPER MEANING! IT'S JUST IDIOTIC FUN!" swept through the industry. Now the games media and developers feel like they need to be philosophers, and that only the new Citizen Kane of video games is allowed on shelves. Seriously, remember Gone Home? The game with zero gameplay, and yet got critically acclaimed despite being a pretentious fuckfest of nothing?

It's a shame controversy doesn't affect many anime which is saying something. In video games, you have people killing each other quickly and most of the people you kill don't suffer. In Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni, some characters are relatable and end up torturing or killing people closest to them. Now, which would you expect to create criminals of the future? The relatable, torture one? No, that's anime and anime is only for kids. So a media that is supposedly aimed at children can have torture, related characters, relatable events and murder but a game that is aimed at a audience over the age of 17 can't have unrelatable events, quick, almost painless murder.
It's good to see the creators of controversies use logic that if a violent aimed at adults, it's overly violent but if a violent anime, which non anime watchers would assume is for children, is fine.

Battlefield 3 has you kill ONE rat. Pokémon has you grinding creatures to gain experience points. Yo-kai Watch has you grinding critters to get experience points. That's how it works. Screw gravity and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. Grind. Kill. Experience points. Level up. In Yo-kai Watch, you can grind Manjimutt for experience points. The walking dead game is far more thought provoking than some paint slapped around on a canvas. It shows the human condition and asks how far will you go to save yourself, and has an amazing graphical style, Much better than a painting of a guys face.
I don't get why parents get so upset over the content of video games. Do they read the rating? My parents would look at the ratings of games when I was a kid. I wasn't allowed to play games like Grand Theft Auto, but I don't think Rockstar's intended audience is 8 year olds. Those ratings are there for a reason. If it says the game contains nudity, don't get mad when your kid sees a naked girl or guy.

"Video games can never be art" was one of them, and he made several basic logical blunders such as presuming that every game needs to be "won" to be appreciated and that a Romeo and Juliet game with the option of a happy ending (i.e. winning) would necessarily completely invalidate any artistic merit of the story.
He would later basically backpedal with "I guess they're art in a non-traditional sense".
Even a very well-polished and beautiful game like Okami has yet to reach the level of absolute wonder that we see from classical art.

The violence is okay, nudity is not mentality has always been weird to me.
There are people that will absolutely say they are more comfortable seeing a person ripped in half than a totally tame bedroom scene. And I was one of these people. My parents bought me Mortal Kombat for my third birthday. I watched all manner of violent movies and played violent games growing up. So really violent stuff in media is nothing special to me.
But even now, I secretly feel kinda awkward whenever there's a romance scene in any kind of medium. Meanwhile I can watch someone be disemboweled while eating a delicious cheeseburger and having a casual conversation.
Personally, if I had kids, I probably wouldn't want them playing super violent or overly sexual games. At least not until I felt they were mature enough.
Also, I really want to introduce someone at Fox News to visual novels. I think they'd like them.

I remember back in the day as a kid. I would sneak and play my cousins games like Splatterhouse 3 and Mortal Kombat 1, 2 and 3. It was so fun playing scary, gore games when you're not supposed to :P

I mean, they attacked Nintendo under the impression that collecting a leaf or bell to earn a costume based on a raccoon dog or cat was promoting killing animals for furs, and in what universe does that even make sense?
If you list out every ridiculous protest PETA made you'd have no end to the video. This is the organization that claimed catgirls in anime encouraged people to abuse and rape animals. I've seen a ton of anime with cat-girls depicted anywhere from cute to hot, and not once have I or anyone I know who watches those anime thought that a cat looked like it'd be fun in bed.

In reference to #3 about PETA, apparently they started raising hell about Mario's Tanooki suit in Mario 3. Only took them about 20 years to notice that...and what about the frog suit or the turtles he was stomping? PETA really needs to pick their battles.
Bonus PETA blunder: Before the release of Super Meat Boy they got all up in a tizzy because he's "Meat Boy" and that glorifies red meat so they made one of their obnoxious clone games: Super Tofu Boy. Two problems with this: 1) Meat Boy is just a boy without skin, that's why his love interest is bandage girl. 2) Edmund McMillen and Tommy Refenes instigated this outrage on PETA's forums for a laugh and got more free publicity then they could ever imagine. They added Tofu Boy, who is completely worthless and can't beat over half the levels, to the PC version if you type in PETAPHILE as a code.
Seriously? that was one of the best jokes in portal! My buddy named Matt got a randomly generated XBL account name called unadoptedmatt and he was adopted as a young kid lol but did we see him on the news? NOPE. We still call him that to this day lol

The reason Hot Coffee created such a controversy was because its full data, while ordinarily inaccessible, still existed intact on the disc and therefore was still a part of the game that was adult content - but the ESRB had been told nothing about it and therefore had not considered it in their rating.
As San Andreas was originally rated M (17+), this meant that Rockstar was, so far as the public was concerned, willfully distributing pornography to minors.
The fact that this pornography was dummied out of the game and needed a specialized access method (i.e. mod) is irrelevant - it's no different from those old Dreamcast games that have pictures when you put them in a CD-ROM drive, except that the pictures are crude porn.
Rockstar later re-released the game and removed the dummied content entirely, allowing them to keep their M rating.

#1 definitely deserved to be on this list. No offense to the now-deceased Ebert but his statement was shot down years ago when Okami came out. Even today, games like Journey continue to prove that the medium can be taken seriously as an art-form.
i'm 14 and i've seen breasts, not real, girl breasts mind you but i am passionate about furry art and no matter how clearly you state "clean furry art" into google search there is always random chesticles mixed in with the non-pornographic art. also, i take this medicine that makes my "boobs" larger than those an average guy my age but smaller than those of an average girl my age. it's not noticeable until i take my shirt off but i sometimes get ridiculed at the pool

the whole video game thing can be summed up simply as:
• games don't make people violent, their upbringing, genetics, and experiences make people violent.
• if you really do commit murder because of a video game, you were probably seriously disturbed and mentally ill before hand, and preventative measures should have been taken to ensure your illness was identified and treated professionally.
• violence has been steadily declining since the inception of video games, and TV shows / movies are just as, if not more sexual and violent than games.
• games with graphic and adult content have age labels on them. If you are scared your kid might kill somebody or hurt somebody because of a mature game, then don't buy them that game. Step up and take responsibility for your kid instead of forcing the rest of us to curtail our entertainment and bend to your ridiculous moral standards.
