Systolic vs Diastolic Blood Pressure: Which One Is More Important?

  • Today I'm going to answer the question, of systolic vs diastolic blood pressure. Which one is more important? We know that high blood pressure is a leading cause of heart disease, strokes, and kidney failure. And so it is imperative that this condition be controlled.
This video is intended to be informational only. It is not a medical consultation, nor is it personalized medical advice. For medical advice, please consult your physician.

But when it comes to the blood pressure which one should you focus on? Which one is more important? Systolic, diastolic, or should you just flip a coin? No need to worry, because I'm going to help clear things up, and by the end of this article you will not only know the differences between the two but also which one is more important.
What Are The Blood Pressure Numbers?
    Systolic Blood Pressure:
Now the systolic blood pressure is that top number. And it is a measure of the force exerted on your vessels while the heart is contracting or squeezing.
    Diastolic Blood Pressure:
The diastolic blood pressure is the bottom number. And it is a measure of the force exerted on your blood vessels in between heartbeats while the heart is relaxing.
    What Is Blood Pressure?
Blood pressure is the force that your blood exerts on your vessels. It's the pressure that your blood puts on your vessels. Blood pressure. There are two numbers when you're dealing with your blood pressure reading, systolic blood pressure, and diastolic blood pressure.
What Is A Normal Blood Pressure Reading?
According to the American Heart Association, normal blood pressure is when that systolic blood pressure is less than 120 and diastolic blood pressure is less than 80.
    Systolic vs Diastolic Blood Pressure
Now to answer the question of systolic vs diastolic blood pressure, which one is more important? Many studies have revealed that systolic blood pressure is the greater predictor of future heart events such as heart attacks, strokes, and heart failure. And it is irrespective of age and more predictive of future cardiac events.
    How To Manage Blood Pressure
An important part of managing blood pressure is to modify the risk factors that you are able to modify. Now, certain people with primary high blood pressure or essential hypertension will have risk factors that you can't really control. For example age. Over the age of 50, and certainly over the age of 65 can be a risk factor, you can't change that. Or if you have heart valve disease, that's a risk factor. You can't necessarily change that. But there are some things that you can modify.
It doesn't have to be the silent killer for you. If you found this video to be helpful and informative, be sure to share it with the people you care about. More research has been done on systolic blood pressure, which perhaps looks like systolic blood pressure must be the most important overall. As you so eloquently stated, both are important. However, we know that as of 2017 that "it's the systolic blood pressure not diastolic that correlate with CVD outcomes and death in people over 50 years old" according to research.
Thank goodness research has answered this question along with other important questions about the best treatment strategy to reduce morbidity and mortality of cardiovascular disease.
Prior to the 1960's, doctors were resistant to treating hypertension because there were no good studies to highlight that high blood pressure should be controlled. As a result, we lost a lot of people including President Roosevelt.
I am convinced that knowledge, training, and support will help save many lives. Keep it up!

With all this respect, if you'll allow me I would point the fact that a more considered, structured presentation would have halfed its time and made it more easy to follow and understand all of it. I think of you get rid of that big amount of marketing stuff, showing more passion toward the main point of this presentation, you would get even more success with it than you already have. Thank you for the good knowledge, I'm still curious what actually the dyastola pressure (high or low) does in our body. Cheers!

So, based on this, both numbers are important, but for different reasons and for different demographic groups. It took her quite a while to reveal what, in the opinion of the AHA- the American Heart Association, is a healthy (maximum) blood pressure. I wonder, does the American Cardiology Society concur with the American Hearth Association on this (or are they two of the same thing?)?

If we are highly mekanated, we may need more vitamin D3/K2
the K2 keeps calcium out of our arteries ..so they won't be stiff, or less stiff
D3 is extra, since we don't get much from sun
A good way to get K2, is eating NATTO. you could get from asian markets

I’m not a doctor but I think your answer is in the question! Yes, potassium is sorely missing along with too much sodium in diets because of processed foods. Potassium removes sodium from the body. I go out of my way to eat high potassium foods and I eat mostly whole-foods to avoid the sodium. As a result my pressure is typically 110/70. It works. Add exercise, sleep and hydration and it is pretty easy.

I had to fight with them because they were sending her home with a BP 173/111. They told her she'll be okay with that BP. SMH I feel some hospitals after covid just want you in an out. Micheal, yes it is very hereditary. Come to think of it, we most like eat the foods we have been eating since childhood , basically our lifestyle don't change much as we grew up. Unless, we take drastic steps which starts from the brain by identifying and accepting what was bad and actively and intentionally changing it before it's too late. I know from personal experience having seen my uncles suffered so from diabetes and HBP, I have equipped myself with wealth of information since I was 14 about this diseases as I don't want to fall victim.
