Working on a Japanese Farm (in Hokkaido)

- I spent the day (8:00am - 5:00pm) working at Yuyu farm in Yuchi, Hokkaido (Japan).
I planned to stay for a couple of days earlier this month... but I ended up getting sick (and having to cancel). Luckily, they let me drop by later in the month to help out for the afternoon.
If you're interested in staying there and/or volunteering, I HIGHLY recommend it. They're great.

While I was there, no one spoke any English, though, so if that's a problem for you... uh... good luck?

Omg, rockin that outfit :'D
Those old ladies sound awesome!
+Rachel & Jun I'm bringing farmyard country chic :D
There's a primal satisfaction is harvesting fresh foods.
That bonnet is not ridiculous. That bonnet is awesome.
+PosyGirl72 For the life of me I cannot remember their names now, even though Firefly is all I have been watching/listening to for the past four months on the road in the truck.
FoolishDoug I just quoted Malcolm Reynolds
Perfectionism in picking tomatoes. Everything in Japan is an art form. Great vid!
We would love to do this! I would probably be laughing so hard with the little old ladies. Thank you for this video it look like so much fun.
i love how the japanese people put great care into making sure they sell quality veggies. i am sure it applies to a lot of other things too.
only wishing could find tomatoes that beautiful where I live. That looks like such an amazing experience, very zen-like.
In non-Japanese countries, when it says on the packet that the vegetables are washed, I wonder to myself "how well...?"
In Japan, I KNOW it's true~
+Kento Bento Hahaha. So true!
Its lovely how the old ladies enjoy working on the farm :) keeps the body fit and they have contact with people! How many old people sit alone in their homes and have no one to talk to ... great job Grace
I picked a lot of tomatoes in my family's garden back in the day. It was fun.
that is so cool they need to do this everywhere
What a wonderful day for you, and what a wonderful idea!
This seemed like a great experience! Would love to try something similar some day! :)
+Stu in Tokyo DO ITTTTTT
+Texan in Tokyo out of curiosity. Is this a none profit farm or are you just helping out a business on your community..? It's so nice to be around a nice community.. We lack this in the US
I keep coming back and watching your videos over and over ... really miss you guys!
I can only imagine how green your fingers got and how they smelled from picking all those tomatoes. This looks like a wonderful experience!
I love how cherry tomatoes are monster plants. Tiny fruit, gigantic plants. They're usually prolific producers too, one year I got about a liter of tomatoes a day off one plant during peak season.
What a beautiful experience, thanks for sharing.
What a great farm! Thank you for this video.
This is amazing . I would love to watch more videos like this from you :) I love agriculture
This honestly seems like a lot of fun.
Welcome to my job :) Working at the fields and picking fruits and vegetables :) It's awesome. I always get sad in winter..
You guys should make a cooking video with the vegetables you picked!
I'm losing it over how cute the tomatoes are.
+Blank Dino They are pretty adorable tomatoes, right??
I really appreciate these videos. Such a pure country, really makes me so positive and happy.
That's so cool. It seemed like the fruit picking and vegetable uprooting would be really soothing. Almost therapeutic for anyone who needs time to think, but doesn't like having their hands idle like me. 😊
That looks really awesome.
I grew up on a farm in Germany, and I never liked farm work lol. I think it's always more appealing to people who are not used to it and only do it from time to time especially when they have office jobs. I always hated the repetitive picking work as a child though. But maybe you come to appreciate it more when you grow older especially since then your sense of time changes. As a child, one hour can feel like an eternity lol.
But yes, definitely a lot of work goes into such things, and we should appreciate that. Sadly, at least here, farmers are often made fun of. When some people joke about people who are not as educated, they often say they're a dumb peasant. It's really disrespectful. Farmers provide us all with the food we eat daily and that we need to survive!
It's good to see such appreciation for it.
That part about the carrots is hilarious
+Pho Doan Right? RIGHT???
That's nice of you to volunteer. I volunteered at our local food bank this past summer. It was disorganized and we weren't allowed to take anything.
It was amazing to see how much care and love went in to a simple box of tomatoes. I wish America did that
awww. that's so nice of you to volunteer.
I love these type of videos where you vlog about your life. Awesome video!
Another great post, Grace. I like seeing this side of Japan away from the cities.
This is one of my favorite videos in your channel so far!!!!
I love your videos!!! I love the Japanese culture and language and seeing your videos just makes me love Japan more! Hopefully after college I get to go there and meet you ! :) Love yall and thank you for making my days better ❤
For me whenever I check the tomatoes in my garden. If you touch them and the tomato fruit easily detaches like it was gonna fall off. Its ripe to eat. Pretty interesting how that works. Seems very peaceful and nice. Would like to try it out one day
I worked at a massive tomato greenhouse in the Netherlands once. I had to cut the leaves at a rate of 1100 plants per hour. The tomatopickers were working at about the same rate. It had nothing to do with gardning or watching good food grow. It was a tomato factory and I hated the job. I would willingly volunteer to work at that Hokkaido farm though. It seems to be very satisfying work.
You should add this in your upcoming book! Talk about local farms and how they are very important in Japan!
That is so awesome! It makes you appreciate how much love goes into picking the right vegetable and packaging them carefully. You don't see that here in the U.S. unfortunately. What a wonderful way to spend the day and to get to know the people in the community!
Wow that outfit ... it reminded me of both Saved By The Bell and Little House On The Prairie. As for the produce hopefully they will implement a program like the one the grocery chain I work for has. We call it "Naturally Imperfect". We buy the oddly shaped produce and sell it at a small discount to people who don't mind if the cucumbers are not straight or if the shape of the carrots might inspire old ladies to make penis jokes.
more outdoor activity please, farming, seeing waterfall, going into woods, etc. i really love japan natural beauty :)
It's so great that you volunteered to do this! =) Thank you for sharing your experience
That is a brilliant way to one, get out of the city. And in the 2-3 months of harvesting fruit & Veg, working one day a week and getting to take the imperfect ORGANIC! food home. Which you can then freeze for use in the rest of the year! You get exercise & save HUGE on the most expensive part of Japanese home cooking! Also, LOVE that Little House on the Prairie hat
Speaking of weirdly shaped produce, I was reading somewhere that a young girl (in America) started an awesome company where she takes "ugly" reject fruits and veggies and turns them into pressed juices so people are more likely to buy them! I thought it was a brilliant idea because SO much produce gets thrown out just for being ugly. Do people in Japan drink pressed juices at all, or would that business venture be futile? Haha
+ultimatekai Isn't that what they already do? I know they sell grade b eggs to restaurants because the look ugly
This is fun, useful and connect you at least a little bit with your food...
Yay!! Another video to brighten my day :) Love you guys! ❤
I love this video, grace. Narrative (voice over?) very soothing. Wish we had this in America! We now have this back where I grew up (Guam) whoever puts in the labor, can bring home vegetables too :)
This kind of volunteer activity is absolutely amazing, but sadly, there is no such kind of activity like this in the place where I live😭.
+Jenny P Then start one. Find an activity to do, then figure out how to achieve it. Get volunteers for the planning stage too
+truebluekit i actually attended some kind of volunteer activities now and then but such an activity like this😓. Still hunting but don't know how to find😔.
Jenny P
The thing is, it's difficult to find that kind of activity because it's difficult to organize.
It looks simple, but there are many things that needs to be doing. You can't just plant something and expect to have a group project.
Before you even plant the single seed, you need to plan what will you plant? Where will you sell them or how will you use the produce? Is there really enough of a demand to make planting it all worthwhile? How much do you need to grow for the operation to be profitable? Where will your growing operations take place, and will that land be able to produce the amount you need to be profitable? Etc, etc.
What I'm saying is, even the planning part can be a group project, and you can get people in to volunteer. Work together, throw all your ideas in, take things step by step, and have fun. It'll keep you busy for ages.
+Jenny P look into WWOOF! You might be able to find a place in your country or over seas to volunteer.

I loved this video! Very cute and your personality really came out in this.
Awesome Miss Grace!🍅🍆🌽 I used to volunteer at a farm too! so much fun 😊
Gee that'd be fun! Fingers crossed that I can make it to Japan next year..
You guys get up to the coolest things!
I love volunteering on farms - especially organic/sustainable farms. That looks like such a wonderful experience. It is really nice spending time with elders as well because they have so much wisdom and life experience to share with us seishōnen
Amish people in Hokkaido, never knew they were there too, LOL
Great video... Thumbs up!!!! ^^
Thomas
That must be very time consuming! Packaging is sooo careful and handle with careee!
that feeling you had is called Zen.
I love these videos, they brighten up my day! :D
OMG I'M IN LOVE WITH YOUR HAT
+TheUwagaPies I'M A LITTLE OLD LADY ON THE PRAIRIE :DDDD
Love the outfit 😜 we have a farm kind like that here in Texas, it's called sweet berry farm in Marble Falls, about an hour or two outside of Austin. They mainly do strawberries but you get to pick as much as you want then buy what you picked. They do other types of berries as well.
I have picked cucumbers before. It was back breaking but left me with wonderful memories with my family. We would get so bored or tired while picking that anything would make us laugh for no reason. I miss those times. I think this part of Japan is where I'd like to go the most! Farm work! Love it and miss it. I am now working in a factory with really mean people so it's no fun. >
omg you're so cool!! I really wish that I'll get to visit japan and do some of this farm work soon.
I heard mississippi has similar air and ground for stuff to grow. My boyfriend has been there and says there's a magnolia planted in one of japan's cities and the ground is very a like to my states. I've never been to texas however, but I'd like to! but japan is obviously a given :D I just love this video, I watch it over and over along with all your other gardening videos.
I like doing repetitive manual chores while listening to audio books, you loose yourself in the story and before you know it the chores are done:) Glad to see you had fun!
Grandma's always love giving youngins candy regardless of culture.
+Nichole Bird I know! I thought that was awesome!!!
+Nichole Bird If I hear "grandmas" and "candy", i immediately think of those strawberry hard candies. xD
+mijumaru97 but those are so yummy!!!!
+mijumaru97 omg dont remind me lol
In civilized societies, yes. Don't expect such treatment in Morocco or random African countries. Perhaps not even in China.
Love it! What a fantastic video! :)
you need to do more of these
I go into a weird deep thought trance when i wash dishes by hand....
looks nice! Getting free, fresh produce is worth it.
So awesome and great video!
Seems like a lot of fun 😄
Here in New York you can go apple picking, it's fun! but you can't climb the tree which is really sad, I loved climbing trees! :D
Where did Ryosuke go after saying 'gambattene'? I just kept wondering :D
He vanished into thin air.
Maybe it's his super hero power? lol
+That Japanese Man Yuta He had work that day. Lol. So he just dropped me off for the day~
@@PopRocksV nice one lol
Thanks for great video ;) natural products are the best even more when you gather them yourself :D
love this type! more please!
Eco,farming vacation. If I ever go to Japan again I would like to volunteer there for a few days.it would be more interesting to do than just be a tourist.those tiny tomatoes lolled good.
Would love to know something about the Ainu people of Hokkaido ... Loving this series
Grace you're stealing my style!
Love you guys ♡♥♡♥♡
This is absolutely lovely...what a lovely lifestyle...come and pick vegetables to bring home to your family! That's the way it should be...none of the hormone exploded crap we throw into our carts...I want to have a garden!!! ^_^
Wow this was very interesting :) thanks for showing us :)
That's so awesome! I'd love to volunteer at those places. I love gardening! Especially organic and permaculture. I'm always learning. I also collect heirloom seeds from all over the world. :) loved this video so much! Thank you! XD
Balance in life is key and I wish I knew what you know at your current age when I was younger
Lol looks like fun. The old ladys sounds like a hoot
Seems pretty awesome~
Haha some of those tomatoes look like they could be characters in an anime.
Love weird shaped carrots. Usually caused by heterogenous soil texture. Carrot seeds are a pain in the butt to plant.
Looks like a good experience! Is this something I'd be able to try out as a tourist? We don't really have places like this where I'm from in England, the closest it gets is the fields where you can pick your own strawberries. Love the hat btw :)
lovely tomatoes!!!! this is great :D haha the candy looks like a thing you give hamsters in their cages to lick and bite
I wonder what the food waste statistics are like in Japan and if there's any laws regarding unsellable food since the appearance standard seems to be stricter than in the US. Something like 40% of the food grown here can't be sold because it doesn't meet appearance standards and there are no laws requiring unsellable (but still good) food to be donated or turned to compost, so it just gets thrown away. Such a waste, especially when many here in the US go hungry.
No wonder Japanese people reach such high ages. They just keep working. In the west when people retire sometimes they just shrink away because they no longer do anything but watch tv. :(
By West you mean USA? Cause in Italy, Spain, Switzerland and even France I find many like the Japanese
This was so interesting.
Hahahaha the hat looks like what babies wore decades ago :D I had the same model of hat for my playmobil baby dolls :D Anyways, nice video !
such a cute couple love watching all the adventure s you go on xx
🍅 it all looks so delicious!!
It reminds me of Fresh City Farms in Toronto.
Who came back on 2021. I miss them :-)
That bonnet is adorable af. XD
grace スーパーすごいです。 sorry if i didn't write that right 0-0
So sad to see all the waste just because they aren't perfect... We do this a lot too in Canada but they are starting to sell bags of "Imperfect" fruit or vegetables that are perfectly fine and usually don't even look bad for much cheaper than the regular price.
+Brock Dishart the ones that don't pass the guidelines are probably taken home by the volunteers.
over here where i live, those vegetables are sold dirt cheap to restaurants and places where they train people to become chefs.
+Brock Dishart The imperfect veggies were given to volunteers, so it wasn't wasteful at all :)
+Texan in Tokyo Yeah, I noticed that part of the video. Just remarking on society/consumerism and always having to sell what is "perfect" when the rest is perfectly edible! It's good they let volunteers take it home.
A balanced life is over rated ;) I love fresh, vine ripened tomatoes. And the old ladies sounded like a riot.
Are there any volunteer farms near where you live now? Well, except Japanese Dad's.
What a cool experience! I can't wait to be able to grow my own food. I mean, I feel like because of my diet (mostly vegetables and fruits) that I already have a good appreciation of food in general, but you mentioned something quite true, and that is balance. All things in life must have balance. I think knowing where your food comes from and how it gets from the fields to your body is really great for grounding yourself and have an even deeper appreciation for life. Good on ya! (^_^)
No potato harvest? : ( Potatoes needs love too
......we meet again
I am laughing at your comment harder than I should be!
+Viet Lee I see you and on Emmy channel
Even here?!?
