Just a tip for your tip. Starting with small brad point bit first on the front.. GOT ALL the way through ( since you are using the small bit.) But set depth stop on drill press so that just the sharp tip of the bit will stick out through the back. When you change to the big bit...and flip neck over... you will have 6 tiny holes the put your large bit on and drill to the depth you marked with tape on the bit.
That’s pretty much what I do these days. I honestly don’t remember what I said in the video. 😆 But yeah, small guide holes then just to depth on the back and the face. Good stuff man, thanks for the comment.
Man I struggled through and learned it the hard way too. I just wish I had practiced on scrap wood first instead of a real guitar that I had to dowel and re-drill. ARGGHHHHH
Thanks for the info I'm fitting new tuners and the holes are too small for the main barrel of the tuner so i may only need to drill the rear of the head stock as the front may be ok thanks for the heads up.
I just leave this here for others to see even if the comment is 3 years old. If you have to widen a tuner hole, do it with a reamer. Another option is to use dowels and then redrill them.
You don't need to use a guide hole necessarily. You can just drill deep enough for the tip of the brad point bit to come through to the other side. Then turn it around and drill out the thin layer that's left from the opposite direction by centering the bit to the hole the tip made. Better use a depth stop for that if your drill press has one. Of course the hole will be single-width.
Great tip on different size drill bits for the top and bottom. I shall try that out! Thanks!

Kevin Huff you and me both. I RUINED one or two. Luckily they had other problems too. 😆

That definitely would have been better than my old approach. 👍🏻
Thanks, helpful!
