Various techniques I use for drum processing.
Creative layering techniques.
Disclaimer: This tutorial was almost entirely improvised and I was sleep deprived, so pardon the excessive edits and lengthy-ness of the video.

Yeah, I learned the difference between a freeze 'n drag and a resampling track. Very useful!

And that modern talking at the end cleansed my soul.
The thing that blew my mind was that he was using the same transient for the kick and snare, adds continuity between the hits and glues the sounds together more!
I never thought of using a frequency shifter to transpose the snare. Absolutely ingenious stuff. Your tutorials are super helpful.

I know that Au5 > anyone else, but Cymatics sometimes have some dope samples !
@@oxymoreproducer cymatics makes you rely on others sounds, making you music less unique, its generically better to make your own sounds
@@notrogueking I never pretended that Cymatics are the must have, I just said that it's good to have some samples when you are too lazy to make yours, but I don't use really more than 3 cymatics samples per track haha
@@oxymoreproducer Yeah, I totally understand, I usually cant be arsed to make hi-hat samples so using Cymatics and other sample packs isnt bad, its just generically better to make your own.

I have been using Ableton for almost 10 years and I never knew you could freeze a track and then drag and drop it to audio without having to flatten it. Absolutely incredible tip there

thanks for this awesome tutorial! one of my passions is drum synthesis and i never thought it would possible to get such an awesome snare with just one instance on Operator (i spent many hours experimenting with okay results, but never anything that good). You made me fall in love with Operator again! :D

I've taught myself most of what I know. People I meet along the way have shown me useful techniques and tips which inspire me to dig deeper into on my own time. My insatiable drive to create and to explore is what has brought me to the level I'm at.

you can tell from these tutorials alone that Au5 is just a very intelligent person. from watching other tutorials he is so much more knowledgable than most producers i come across, not only in techniques, but what is actually occurring to the sound when using filters, compression, flangers, chorus, drive, etc. keep learning folks, never stop!

Out of two dozen or so popular drum design tuts I’ve seen, I like this one the best.
As far as ideas go, I was super impressed with Virtual Riot’s snare tutorial with Serum. Since the envelopes are tempo sync’d he was able to lengthen or shorten the snare based on the bpm. Check it out if you haven’t seen it.

Great info my dude! Tho why tune it a snare to 200hz instead of actual notes like "196hz = G" or "220hz = A"? Especially on Kicks. Otherwise this is super similar to what I do plus I learned some new things! :)
Thanks! And since I'm not making a song, 200 seemed to be a simple number. Besides I could just tune it +20hz with the frequency shifter for tuning to A.

Which key combo did you use to crossfade? When I try to crossfade, ableton doesn't allow it because the sample is to short...

Very nice! For this type of sound, I recommend setting envelope loop mode in Operator to Trigger.

The guy uses Harmor there but even if you don't own that there's lots of good fundamental knowledge about snare design you could apply to other synths

Awesome tutorial! would love to see you take a default instrument and make some dubstep sounds out of it
This is giving me lots of good ideas in fact; I've seen the suggestion to use Frequency Shifter to retune drums a few times but I still feel like you have to shift the body too much to get an appreciable change in the noise character - you could Repitch the sample down (or up) first, then retune using Frequency Shifter to place the body tone back at 200Hz. Everything but the body would be shifted.
NF2K Yes, as I mention, frequency shifter will transpose pitch of the body yet preserve the timbre. If you want to change the timbre while preserving the pitch of the body, transpose the clip and frequency shift the pitch back.
