THE greatest shmup ever created. There are a few that come close (Ikaruga, R-Type) but none surpass this masterpiece. I still have it on PS2 both used and MIB, just wish they'd do a remaster for current gen. It'd be great on the go on Switch.
I have watched hundreds of Gradius V players over the years and I am a player myself, but I have never seen a playthrough like this. The playthrough takes everything you know about Gradius's mechanics and you flip them on their head. Strategic posiitioning with multiples whilst using the E laser is excellent, and the selective charge firing takes some knowledge as to when to fire the E laser.
The sound design on this game is incredible, and so is the music. (I only found out recently that it's the same guy who did the music for Final Fantasy Tactics and FF XII).
Lol just been watching again this game is visually stunning and the audio is amazing too, got all the tracks on myipod. I wish a hd port would be released.
Gradius V is surprisingly still graphically impressive even after all this time. The level design is very good too. You can tell there was passion put into making this game. It's sad to see Konami practically abandon this franchise.
It's sad to see Konami, a once great video game publisher, almost completely abandon video games in general and become a mockery of their former selves. Seriously, someone with deep pockets just needs to buy out Konami's classic franchises.
Overall I think that Konami stopped making shoot em up because the genre became in a pretty small niche market, the last based in Gradius if I am not wrong was "Otomedius Excelent" exclusively for the Xbox 360. I think Gradius will back in some point of the future, I also love Gradius is my favorite shoot em up. About Konami itself the things were pretty harsh for the company between 2015 - 2017, but them are improving now, maybe not great but I think I can call it "good". About the mockery I think is pretty easy ignore it, foolish people (The people swearing and being rude) don't deserve much time but I think out there is people that have proper criticism for the company and them know that the proper way to critize Konami is not buying the games from the company. At least it seems like most people still trust in the company, the 1 millions copies sold of Super Bomberman R are a proof of that and the rude comments usually don't get too much attention compared to the nice comments. I wish them the best, hopefully next years will be better for the company. Hope dies last, and if not out there are more than 100+ worthy Konami old games that are worth checking. (At least for me, sorry if I sounded like speaking for you)
Gradius is my favorite shoot em up of all times so I like a lot to meet other fans from the franchise. I have seen a lot of videos from other shoot em up from Konami where people beat them in the hardest loop and not losing lifes. This video is pretty impressive!! Gradius V has a lot of intense and hard sequences and it is a great spectacle watching gamers with nerves of steel playing the whole game and beating them with no deaths. Congratulations, I am sure that it wasn't quite easy beat this. Destroy the core!!
Dude this is what intimidates me with Gradius games. There's just so many things going on and it's stressful to play. That doesn't mean though that it is not a good game, obviously it is. Looking at this, it was ahead so much of it's time before. The game aged well honestly.
I used to play every chance I had. I've been all the way to deep in loop 3 without dying. I absolutely love the intensity of this game. To this day I haven't seen any game get near this level of concentration. Excellent run 😎💯🚀
PEG, I can say it man, even after rewatching this dozens of times, dammit man, your skill with this game is unmatched. If this is as hard as the game can get, pending no subsequent loops are harder, you are the absolute best. *Tips hat*
Ohhh... Gradius Loop. I remember my best Gradius loop is Gradius 1... 8 Loops then I got sleepy and died a hilariously miserable fate of just staring at the screen and bumping into objects till Game Over. My friend who was watching was dumbfounded and thought I got tired but when I explained my brain actually went off there for a little while, he said "What the heck? You actually fell asleep with open eyes?" That was when I was a Young Great Gamer Enthusiast. Now I'm just a random normal gamer who's fangs have become dull and lost its instinct.
Konami hired Treasure to make this game I think. Say what you will about Treasure, but they sure know how to make an awesome shmups. Ikaruga. Radiant Silvergun. Gradius V. Someone needs to hire those Treasure guys to make a new shmups on the new consoles.
In all the Gradius games, there's always an open passage behind the extremely weak final boss. ...what if we used our warp engines to go around all the BS levels and CAME IN from that back door? 🤔
this wansnt originally going to be called gradius. the original was supposed to be called "gladius", but a japanese-english error, but it kept its name due to the fanbase.

i was thinking of what i could say....the kaizo gradius was pretty funny, but i would have loved to stood behind you at the arcade back in the day and watch you play something like this.
I HATE STAGE 7. The traps in part 1 are ridiculous because when you die- it starts a chain reaction of deaths. Even the best players get destroyed here.
I grew up with GI~GIII & Salamander (arcade, 1985~1990), and there used be a lot of Japanese players being at this level.....except you go above & beyond. Quite impressive (I used to loop 7~8 on GII, but on GV I keep crashing into walls lol). I still can't beat the boss at the meteor stage without losing 2~3 Vipers, and the high-speed stage is a joke (those damn shutters). GV is insanely difficult (GIV was even worse).
I don't mean any disrespect towards AGDQ, I found the Yoshi's Island speed run to be very impressive, but they should really have things like this for raising money to fight cancer.
great channel, I love all the games you play, I must ask what controller are you using? I had a Saturn pad for my PSX shmups back in the day before I sold most of my older systems and games
+Rob Dobson Thanks! Back when I played this in 2014 I was using a PSOne pad (the controller that came with the small, white PSOne). Now I'm using Sega Saturn pad with a PSX adapter.
Even at loop 3 this game is already tooooo hard, with soooo much suicide bullets to dodge. Imagine Loop 7 and above. Puts even the hardest Cave shooters out there to shame. Our only hope for seeing Loop 10 played all the way from Loop 1 is to build an AI to teach itself to play this game.

That is some arcade level serious bullet hell. Im impressed.

The only thing I would have love to see in this game are the Moais ( easter island heads ) it would have been phenomenal.

Thanks! Gradius V does indeed continue to get harder up until loop 10. Pretty rediculous for a game this long!
Tviks is the best gradius v player ever with a score of 39 million and 16 loops. While this guy is impressive he's not quite on that level.
