    Thanks for watching. This MTD mower has a huge oil leak that basically makes a huge mess on the deck. Since the leak is on top of the deck and the oil fill tube isn't leaking then the leak must be coming from the sump gasket. If this video isn't what you were looking for then please check out another one of my videos.

    Just something I learned long ago which may help: If you want or need to make your own unpressurised gasket, the best material is............a Cornflake box ! Fixed many carb, transmission and manifold joints with these. Thanks for the video, well shot and explained

      Used that trick one time back in the seventies. There was an article in Hot Rod Cartoons magazine "you know you're a hot rodder when..." and one of the answers was that you buy a particular breakfast cereal because the boxes make good gaskets. A friend had built a go cark with an old lawn mower engine and we needed to make a new gasket for the carb, so we cut it from a cereal box.

    This particular engine is being used on many companies mowers nowadays since the good old Quantum has been pushed aside. It is quite the throwaway engine with all of the plastic parts. I would suggest that anyone who has a mower with this engine install a small inline fuel filter like the red ones B&S sells. The carb on this engine gets clogged all too often with its tiny jets. Great video as always.

    My only concern with using RTV in place of a traditional gasket for a crankcase cover or sump is that it will reduce crankshaft end float which is usually only a few thousandths of an inch. I would check the end float after the second torquing down of the sump bolts just to make sure it is still within spec. Otherwise an excellent job!

      Yes. You cannot do this on a lot of engines as the top bearing too tight or cause other problems. But that mower wasn't worth the price of a gasket and he had some RTV laying around.
      No sense putting an air filter on it. Just let it knock and use it for a brush hog until it dies!!

    You need the factory gasket to maintain the required crankshaft endplay. I tried to go the RTV route once and the engine wouldn't even turn. The crankcase and sump cover acted like a clamp. The gasket made all the difference. Also you should sand off the rust on the crakshaft and file any burrs on the keyways, so as not to trash the bearing in the sump cover when you remove it.

      Yes they do because the are a little new design piece of crap.
      Carbs clog up easier...THANKS EPA compliance!!! and they like to surge more than old ones.
      Remember when briggs had two diameters or cranks? I think all of these are smaller. Regardless still junky.
      They don't want then to last like the old ones. The entire industry competes only on price and fake or an paper features. They want you to buy a new one in 6-8 years.

      DON'T DO IT! Marvel Mystery Oil (MMO) is nowhere NEAR the same as engine oil; smart people have worked many hours optimizing different oils for different purposes. Use what the manual says, or maybe synthetic.
      MMO is much less lubricious and your engine will not last nearly as long.

    Help!!! I understand all this. I haven't done it yet, or anything. But here's my issue, bought this last year, this year started up, smoked, went through all oil, oil spitting out the air filter, locked, I freed it up with oil in the spark plug hole, drained after freeing up, new oil, started and burning oil again and some seems to spit out the air filter, since it won't start with the air filter on it, because it's clogged up, so I can see oil spitting. But not all time, just early on. Once started, smoke clears in 5 mins because it's actually running out. Hahaha...so what do you think

    • @HomeGaragechannel
      @HomeGaragechannel  2 года назад

      did you put it away last year with gasoline in the tank? If so, I could have leaked into the engine, and that's why it was smoking, it was basically too much OIL and Gasoline in the engine.
