LG QNED99 8K 2021 TV Review - Should you buy an 8K TV now?

  • The LG QNED99 8k is a flagship 8k TV that's part of LG's QNED lineup, and is the highest-end option from their 2021 models. It features Mini LED backlighting that allows it to have greater control over the local dimming feature and for it to get brighter. Like most of LG's LED TVs, it has an IPS panel with wide viewing angles and low contrast, but the full-array local dimming helps improve the black level. There are a few gaming-oriented features like HDMI 2.1 inputs, low input lag, and a quick response time, but it doesn't have variable refresh rate (VRR) support, which is disappointing.

No such thing as future proofing in tech. Yea buy an 8k tv now but next year they’ll release another 8k tv but with more bells and whistles or better processor. In the end. You need need to buy the tv you like at the moment. Don’t worry about fomo. That’s some bullshit we have to break ourselves away from.

    Hello,
I am from India.have a Q7FN 75 inch samsung 4k uhd tv bought 3 years back thanks to your advice.
Now was planning to upgrade maybe to 8k.
Since no 8k content is their my main criteria is
    1. How much upgradation of 4k content and 1080p and 720p content can a 8k tv do through AI.
    2. I watch lots of sports especially cricket and tennis , and most of it is available on 1080p through dish.
So will the 1080p picture be upgraded by AI on QN800 A 75 inch and if yes will it be better than what we watch 1080p on 4k ultra HD 4k tv.
    3. Besides samsung another company 8k tv you recommend , with price range same as QN800 A.
One more thing in india QN 900A has not released in 75 inch only 85 inch otherwise it would have been my choice .
4.Is the 4k resolution on QN800 A or other 8k tvs from other companies better means , much better than other 4k tvs also my Q7FN included.
Because of its 1 connect box samsung 8k or 4k tvs are better to install.
Last thing or should I wait till next year.
Thanks for the great info you people give.

If u have enough dimming zones a IPS with mini led can look better because of the better colors (va looks milky compared to ips), no black smearing in gaming and they can use a true black layer because the viewing angles are good while va uses a greyish layer to make them better. At the end the ips /ads can looks more deep black in person because of the layer while the va has a greyish black then.
Without local dimming or normal localdimming va is much better because of the static contrast. But when it comes to mini led an ads panel can look better if it has enough dimming zones.

Dimming zones alone don't tell the full story as the software can make a big difference too. Most of our test results we would expect to be similar. If anything, the local dimming performance might be a bit different, but we expect it to be in the same ballpark.

Hey Rtings peeps, I have a question it would be awesome if you handsome geniuses could help. I'm wanting to use a 4k TV as a PC screen, if your computer can't hit at least 60fps native, what's the next best setting? One would think naturally if you can't hit 4k, turn it down to 1440 and let the upscaler work. I've seen conflicting information about this however, that because 1440 isnt an even multiple of 4k, it ends up looking worse than 1080p. Can anybody comment on this? Thanks a lot.

    • @RTINGSdotcom
      @RTINGSdotcom  2 года назад

Hey Rich! Assuming you're talking about gaming, it'll depend on your personal preferences. If you prefer smooth gameplay, set your game to run in 1080p, and have it upscale. If you prefer graphical fidelity, you can render in 4k but you'll have to deal with frame drops.

@@RTINGSdotcom Thanks. I was looking at the X900H as a good gaming TV but now I'm hearing it has issues. Namely that it halves the vertical resolution when going above 60fps, and that adaptive sync doubles the input lag and disables the full array backlighting. Maybe the newer versions fix this. For $1500 what would you say is the best non oled TV that does 120hz, 4k, adaptive sync, and HDR, with good input lag and response time?

  • @olivierluminais

Well I'm pretty sure and certain that you erased my messages but I'm going:
To begin with I find it very suspicious that in your Contrast Test, as by chance the Static Contrast comes in for 75% of the contrast score, moreover on the Static Contrast is as by chance very low 638: 1 while other sites Internet competing with yours finds a Static Contrast of 1058: 1 in a 4X4 W&B checkerboard.
Also I find it very strange that you can find a Dynamic contrast ratio of only 6534: 1, where other sites find a little less than 11000: 1, moreover we do not know if it is Local Dimming on Low, or Medium or on high !! ??
In addition, your Dynamic Contrast rate test only fits 25% of the Final Contrast score, which in 2021 on an LCD TV and even more so IPS would completely disable Local Dimming which !!!! ??
To claim the opposite Confine to the ridiculous !!!!
    Example with the QNED90:
A strange thing about the QNED90, but which can be partly used for the QNED99, the base being quite close in terms of backlighting and LED areas and the Local Dimming Management algorithm.
This is where you would have found a Dynamic Contrast ratio of 6018: 1 on the QNED90 in HDR Source without specifying which Checkerboard to use but above all it is for which Local Dimming, Low, Medium or High! !! ??
Because the RUclipsr "Keep It Classy Tech", him on the QNED90 in HDR source:
Static Contrast: 1,218: 1 in HDR source on the QNED90.
Dynamic Contrast on Low: 18,068: 1 in HDR source on the QNED90.
Dynamic Contrast on Medium: 13,574: 1 in HDR source on the QNED90.
Dynamic Contrast on High: 15,040: 1 in HDR source on the QNED90.
moreover it should be noted that on the QNED90 the luminance of the black is according to youtber "Keep It Classy Tech":
Static Contrast: Black Luminance at 0.544 Nits on the QNED90.
Dynamic Contrast on Low: Black Luminance at 0.044 Nits on the QNED90.
Dynamic Contrast on Medium: Black luminance at 0.054 Nits on the QNED90.
Dynamic Contrast on High: Black Luminance at 0.05 Nits on the QNED90.
If the results proved by the RUclipsr "Keep It Classy Tech" on the QNED90, why would you therefore find, as by chance on your tests, results so low, and if the QNED90 can do so according to other RUclipsr why the QNED99 would have a rate of Contrast worse than the QNED90 !! ??
The Local Dimming Algorithms have made enormous progress in recent years, aided by the large number of LED zones, which in 2021 would make sense to disable Local Dimming on an LCD TV, absolutely nobody in their right mind would do that!!!
Also I think if you had tested the 75 Inch or better 86 Inch Models with a bit more LED Zones and a bit better designed algorithms the contrast rating and Local Dimming would have been significantly better.

      Hey!
First of all, we can assure you that we haven't been deleting any comments. The only comments that get deleted from our videos are things like obvious spam and malicious links. We encourage people to ask us questions about our results because we always want to make sure we're trying to deliver the best information we can.
As far as your comment goes, other 8k TVs we've tested performed similarly and we would actually expect this behavior. It can also depend on the size of the screen and test pattern used as well. For example, a 75" TV with a large test pattern and mini LED backlight will help it score better in a test like this. It's likely that our results are not comparable to Keep it Classy Tech because of the panel we got and the difference in our testing methods.
Also, We don't test contrast in HDR and we only test the setting that is the most accurate, not what necessarily has the best contrast ratio (although they are usually correlated).
Using your example with Stop the FOMO, he had a panel that had a 1058:1 contrast ratio and turning on local dimming improved it by approximately 10x (~11000:1). Our unit with mediocre contrast (and still within expectation of what an IPS panel would have) of 638:1 compared to having local dimming on is, approximately 10x more (6534:1). The behavior is actually tracking well between the two and the difference is likely a combination between the panel we got and the difference in our testing methods.
Please let us know if you have any other questions!

    • @olivierluminais
      @olivierluminais 2 года назад

      @@RTINGSdotcom
The fact of only testing the contrast in SDR, whether Static Contrast only on SDR source, as well as Dynamic Contrast in SDR Source only, significantly biases the Contrast score, because in any case in SDR Source The Luminance of White is necessarily limited to around 100 Nits to about 118 Nits.
except in HDR the technical limit is 4000 Nits.
In addition, whether in the Movies and series that we watch, whether in a non-lit room or in a lighted room which in 2021 on an LCD TV and even more so IPS would completely deactivate Local Dimming the good true answer and absolutely no one !!!
Putting Local Dimming on Low or in a dark room seems logical to me, completely deactivating local dimming for watching a movie or series seems abhorrent and illogical to me even taking into account the possibility of the presence of subtitles during video playback, I say contingency because it's not always true.
What is shocking is that static contrast has overly importance in the Contrast rating, so 75% of the Contrast rating is Static Contrast, even though this does not correspond to actual usage.
It suffices for that to make statistics on a representative panel of people, when they watch a Film or a series, how many are there in practice to watch in a dark or dim or lighted room, also in each of these cases is was Local Dimming completely deactivated, or was it activated and if so at what level, Local Dimming on Low, Medium or High !! ??
and only from there you will be able to create a note of Coherent Contrast.
If you had done it before, I think you should do it again because in the meantime LCD TVs have evolved in terms of managing Local Dimming.
In addition to HDR Source and to a lesser extent in SDR Source, it is obvious that the Local Dimming Level has both a significant impact on both the White Luminance and to a lesser extent on the Black Luminance, except it would appear that as soon as the Luminace of the Black is 0.05 Nits and less when the viewer is at a normal distance from the television, then the black is from the point of view of the ocular capacities of the human eyes absolute because at normal distance from the television he cannot tell the difference between a black with a Luminance of 0.05 Nits and that of a Black with a luminance of 0 Nits, not counting the age of the Captain especially after 45 years and over there is a fuck of contrast sensitivity of human eyes after a certain age.
Another point of importance "HDR Movies" the Contrast Rating comes in for 23% of the Total rating of "HDR Movies", except you told me in your message that the Contrast Rating is based on an SDR Source, how can we introduce a SDR Contrast note in the "HDR Movies" note !! ??
The same goes for the management of Local Dimming, so the way in which Local Dimming is managed is not the same depending on the source, except in "HDR Movies" the Local Dimming test on Source SDR enters for 15% of the Final note of "HDR Movies" it is frankly skewed the results !!!!
With the RUclipsr "keep it classy tech" in are tested of QNED90, when the source is SDR the luminance of the black is at:
Static Contrast the luminance of black is 0.099 nits on Source SDR.
Dynamic Contrast on Low the luminance of black is 0.01 Nits on SDR Source (much less than 0.05 Nits or absolute black).
Dynamic Contrast on Medium the luminance of black is 0.009 Nits on Source SDR (even better).
Dynamic Contrast on High the luminance of black is 0.011 Nits.
Excluding HDR Source on the QNED90 according to this same RUclipsr "keep it classy tech", The luminance of black is:
Static Contrast the luminance of black is 0.544 nits on Source HDR.
Dynamic Contrast on Low the luminance of black is 0.044 Nits on Source HDR (Black is perfect for human eyes, even if it is worse than in SDR).
Dynamic Contrast on Medium the luminance of black is 0.054 Nits on Source HDR.
Dynamic Contrast on High the luminance of black is 0.05 Nits.
So there is a huge difference between Black Luminance in HDR Source compared to Black Luminance in SDR Source, so in SDR Source Black Luminance is lower, except between Black Luminance at 0.05 Nits and Luminance Black above 0.05 Nits and more makes all the difference between a really black black and a black that draws towards the gray.
In addition I find it distressing that between different websites we can choose the checkerboard that we want an 8X8 checkerboard for one and a 4X4 checkerboard for others, so such site can usually benefit such type of LCD panels. VA or OLED and the other such other Type of IPS LCD Panels for others.
Already what do the experts think on this point on which optimal Contrast Checkerboard to choose !! ??

    Hello,
I am from India.have a Q7FN 75 inch samsung 4k uhd tv bought 3 years back thanks to your advice.

Generally speaking, non-8k content will look worse on an 8k TV than it would on it's native panel. So unless you watch 8k content, you probably don't need to rush out for an 8k TV yet!

as i mentioned i have Q7FN 4k ultra hd 75 inch 2018 model. so since you have rightly said 8k no need right now, so shall i upgrade my current 4k tv with current 4k 2021 models or the difference is minimal so dont need to.
      and if need to then
      samsung q900 2019 model 82 inch though its againg 8k .
      lg g1
      sony a 80 j.
      lg c1
which one only if you think i need to upgrade.
my main criteria is sports and its 1080p max content available here.

Sorry bothering guruji just one more query.
      1. Has technology of 4k improved from q7fn which is a 2018 model.
And is qn 900a, qn 800a or qn 900r 4k better than my q7fn including the upscaling of 1080p and 4k content .
Also same goes for sony and lg any set better in 4k.
If yes than which tv I should go for.
      Sony , lg or samsung.
I watch lots of sports on 1080p resolution from my dish.
And one more reality or myth please do clear
Does OLED screen really burns , for example I watch lots of cricket or tennis and also youtube, so will watching a same channel for example for 5 hours continuous effect the pic.
      Samsung qn 900a, qn 800a, q 900r
      Sony A80j, A90j, z9j ..
      Lg - g1 or c1.
Which you recommend especially for sports from
