    Hey everyone! So we know that the Z9J didn’t come out on top vs. other LCD-based TVs at the VE shootout, yet it is by all measurements and subjective accounts (my own, anyway) super impressive. What does that make you think about what constitutes a great display?

      Not a 6500 dollar TV with blooming problems. That's nuts for that kind of money. I have an x950G, I'm not even that sensitive to blooming, but I have an issue with it on that TV and the blooming on this TVs seems similar. They could absolutely make a better TV, they just don't because they know people will still buy it based on name recognition and image processing(which is subjective).

      @@hamsterbrigade how bright does your tv get? Caleb mentioned that the z9J pushes 4000 nits of peak brightness. I’m not sure you realize just how bright that really is. I would agree that the tv could be better, but something can always be better. A little blooming to reach brightness levels that feel like you’re staring into actual headlights, or feel like the blue sky of a scene is really in your living room, is probably worth it. But then, it all depends on personal preference

      Hello Caleb, i was waiting for this review, as im about to order a Tv and hesitating between the 83" A9J and the 85" Z9J.
      My reasoning is i wanna get something future proof so Z9J With 8K but its not an OLED and was worried about blooming.
      Or the A9J that seems to be the best Oled ever made but does not have 8K.
      Unfortunately in your review you didn't takle the 8K question and whether or not there is a notable difference or added benefit on the image quality.
      Would love to hear your feedback on this and what you'd recommend. Would you really go for a Z9J over an A9J ?
      Unfortunately i dont have a place where they have them on display to see them with my own eyes and compare.

      @Caleb, what are the settings you're using on the a90j? I've noticed from previous videos that you tend to recommend turning off any enhancement features. Being an owner of the set and talking in length with other owners this strategy is a basically nerfing this TV.
      I don't think it's fair to compare it to an LCD that even when all it's features are off is no where near the precision of what an OLED can offer.
      The perceived brightness of this TV is unreal when you make it more LCD like and throw accuracy out the window.

    • @reviewforthetube6485
      @reviewforthetube6485 3 года назад +2

      @@evaloutionofman yeah I prefer the a90j if you watch the exact scenes he showed on both he shows the a90j with the train scene and the internal engine and other scenes then you watch it on the z9j the same scenes and the contrast can't come close the depth and richness of the oled in comparison even over his video just shows how much better the a90j is

    • @evaloutionofman
      @evaloutionofman 3 года назад

      I could be wrong, just feels very off that someone would put the LCD over this particular OLED that gets this bright unless they have some type of bias against certain modes or settings. The contrast is just so much better on the a90j the perceived brightness in any reasonably light controlled room is almost uncomfortable at times.
      I get some people have an obsession with reference standards or accuracy and that's fine, it's a hobby in itself... But if someone is willing to use an LCD for critical viewing, you'd think an OLED in vivid mode is fair game at that point 😂

    • @evaloutionofman
      @evaloutionofman 3 года назад +1

      Obviously this is all just preference anyway so his choice doesn't have to be logical. I'm sure they're both amazing TV's, it's just having an a90j in front of me and seeing how overwhelmingly bright and colorful this TV has the ability to get over my LG CX... I don't see LCD technology being able to overcome that even at thousands of nits as picture quality just goes to crap after a certain point.

I do like that the LG has 4 HDMI 2.1 ports making it just plug and play. I like the profile of the LG and have placed it in the living room now as more of a conversation piece. @@shamarlawrence9429 Sorry, but despite its higher resolution (& resolution ranks in 4th place among aspects of performance that aid PQ), the problem with the Sony Z9J is that it's still using a technology which OLED has made obsolete. Any LCD type TV that uses the crude, picture compromising scheme of dimming zones, in a futile attempt to equal the absolute black that ONLY OLEDs are capable of, always exhibits some picture artifacts, that mar its image quality, that's a drawback which OLEDs simply don't suffer from. So a great demo for showing OLED's superior black level ability, is to use the Blu-ray of the movie "Gravity", and play the scene from early in the movie, in which astronauts are out in space, working on a spacecraft that's orbiting the earth.
      If comparing that scene as displayed by the Sony Z9J, with it also being shown on Sony's own A90J OLED, viewers will immediately see that the blackness of space contrasted with the illumination of the earth, and the bright white spacecraft, as displayed by the OLED TV,
      simply has the deep, dark, void of space not only looking more convincing on the OLED than on the Z9J, but the OLED also reveals a greater number of the more tiny stars in space, than the Z9J is capable of displaying. So thanks to OLED, the picture quality limiting technology utilized for LCD/LED back-lit TVs, with its video artifact producing dimming zone scheme, is now as obsolete as using audio cassette tape to play music in a high quality sound system!

    I'd still like to see ANY reviewer review the most important part of the TV, the tuner! Without a tuner these TV's are just monitors with some apps built in not televisions. So, Caleb, be the first to start testing and reviewing the TV's tuner again. It used to be one of the major review points in magazine reviews. Plus talk about the speed of Program Guide. (the ones on my 2 different model year Samsung TV's are painfully slow scrolling from page to page) Speed of finding channels and number of channels found are also important discussion points, plus are some of those marginal channels with pixilation and drop out problems? I've had some TV's that had a built-in signal strength monitor which was very handy in deciding between two signal sources for the same channel. Some were easy to use, some not so easy. As for the Program Guide, how much info does it give on a program? The the basics or does it give a synopsis and review score? Are color codes used for the different types of programming? Does the TV offer Instant Replay like my TCL P605? (when I plug in a USB memory stick) That is a great feature. When it displays Closed Caption is the font they use too big and blocks much of the screen? Is it hard to read? Changeable in size, font and color of font, drop shadow, etc? I'm losing my hearing so CC is going to be very important to me. It's not so much I can't hear them speaking, it's just muddled and I can't make it out so CC is a godsend, but not so much if it blocks 1/2 the screen.

    What would it be really cool is that if you could make videos of what you feel are the best televisions at $500 intervals. Starting at 500 bucks going up to $3,000. That would be a total of six videos. I am normally in the close to $2,000 range and would love to know your top three for that price range. As a matter of fact instead of naming one best in each price category name your top three in order. I say it every time but you guys do great work and I really appreciate everything that you do. Hello to my Portland neighbor from SW WA!
    Apparently, legacy television Ethernet ports still commonly utilize an outdated 10/100 protocol, which lacks the ability to pass sufficient bandwidth that streaming 4K video requires. So for example, even though one is using Plex on their own hardwired intranet, streaming 4K video can run into bottlenecks, because the amount of data actually requires bumping up into that 1000 range of a 10/100/1000 connection speed. In addition, one work around is if the TV features a high-speed 3.1 USB port, a dongle that connects Ethernet to USB can solve the problem by passing enough signal that way. However, another legacy shortcoming is that few TV’s feature these high-speed 3.1 USB ports.
    Any thoughts on this issue? If it warrants a valid issue and concern, would it be possible to include pointing out compliance or noncompliance with this important spec during reviews. Maybe consumer awareness can be increased, and pressure generated to push the market in the direction of addressing this issue. Cheers~

    • @thecheese4960
      @thecheese4960 3 года назад

      We don't know what settings or how the sets were calibrated at the VE shootout. Its obvious the black levels are not going to be as good as Z9G or even Z8H as the Z9J doesn't have the backlight master drive. Brightness is supposed to be around 2500 nits, so again not up to par with the previous models. Clarity colors and motion would be better than others as Sony is number 1 with that. All things point to the Z9J being worse than Sonys other 8K models by a decent margin

    Thanks for pointing out what type of tuner the TV has. ATSC 3.0 might have been delayed because of the pandemic but I hope to see it start in every market by next year sometime. I live in St. George, Utah and using my HDHomeRun 4K I get 4 channels from the ATSC 3.0 side of it, split between feeds from Las Vegas or from up north in Salt Lake. The big problem I'm getting is no sound on some channels but things are still in the setup and testing phases according to my correspondence with engineers at the stations. Once we get this pandemic under control and things start up again (2022?) then having a TV with an ATSC 3.0 tuner will come in handy. Go back to the switch from analog to digital tuners, it really didn't take over until the deadline approached and all the stations/networks/manufacturers made digital their main impetus and started selling new TV's like MacDonald's sells hamburgers at lunch time.

    Even back in the early CRT days, Sony TV's were significantly heavier than any other brand. I used to run a delivery company with several large electronics retailers as customers. We delivered every brand of TV there was and never liked having to deliver any larger Sony into a residence, especially up stairs. Sony console TV's were especially heavy, sometimes requiring a crew of four just to get it into a house.

    • @WhiskeryMage61
      @WhiskeryMage61 2 года назад +1

      I have the ZH8. Black levels are amazing, blooming is only an issue in very specific situations: HDR with max brightness with a small bright icon in the corner (gaming loading screen). During movies (e.g. I watched Gravity, District 9, Avengers) no issues whatsoever. During gaming neither except if you scroll on an ingame map (motion gets blurry for a second). I would say that the biggest issue with these TV is how certain type of motion is handled vs OLED. Again not noticable in most movies or games as shots that the TV cannot handle are not typical, but it can rarely happen.
      Let's put it that way: with calibration and test screens that are designed to trick the TV, you can provoke imperfections, but during actual use almost never any issue. On the other hand, given the HDR strength and natural look of any lit area, I think you will find even OLED impactless and boring. + you can use the TV during broad daylight in a room facing south and see but the darkest screens perfectly without having to close your curtains even in cinema mode (no need to switch to blinding and blue vivid mode)... Netflix calibrated mode is also perfect for the evening and even subtitles do not bloom.
