I've got the 75 Z9K here and I see blooming in certain situations but the overall picture looks so good it doesn't bother me. The set is uber bright when needed, the black goes black, and it doesn't crush black unless you really crank down the black level adjust.
High bitrate 1080p and up is really crisp, low bitrate SD and HD is soft looking.
Since this TV has been released they have released 2 to 3 firmware updates depending on how early you got your set.
It just has a depth and 3d effect to the picture that blows away my previous TCL 65 825 original mini led set, even though the TCL has better blooming control, but it crushes blacks to get it in the high local dimming setting.
I still love my TCL but the Z9K goes into beast mode when you feed it 4k HDR content. It is the brightest, best looking set I've ever seen in HDR.
You pays yer money and take your chances but I'm quite happy with mine, somebody else might not be and it is quite expensive but price has been very slowly dropping since it was first released.

This seems like the conundrum faced. Crush blacks or have blooming? Sony seems to steer towards blooming. Are they right? Considering that they make the reference monitors used by professionals, maybe I should just shut up about blooming.

    • @69Dartman
      @69Dartman Год назад +3

@@mikehamm45 Actually I didn't mind the crushed blacks on the TCL because just watching it from any normal angles you never saw any blooming and it had awesome black levels. It also went to almost 2000 nits in hdr so a very capable set for late 2019 when it was released. I got it in February 2020 just as everything shut down so had a nice TV to watch while I wasn't working. The Sony is on another level picture wise though, as it should be for what they charge for them and no crushed blacks is nice if I'm watching space flicks.

I usually always agree with B but, I feel as if a lot of reviewers like to crap on the Z9K before saying anything positive. No TV is perfect but, everyone likes to express all the "negatives" about the TV while minimizing the positives. I've been watching B for over a year now and still don't understand the hockey screen test 🙃 and, you'd think Sony blooming is exceedingly more noticeable than any other mini LED or even OLED for the matter. I get the Sony is expensive but, so is the Z2 or, 97 LG2 or even the Samsung when first launched. And, maybe it's not an Anti-Sony bias as much as, it's an pro OLED bias because I hardly ever hear the inherent problems with OLEDs. Except for the occasional burn in talk which everyone says is a non-issue now

At current prices, the 85" Samsung's 2022 flagshipTV, the QN900B 8K, costs $3,000 less than the 85" Sony Z9K, so the Samsung might be the better all-around value for most buyers (and the Rtings TV test site mentions that the QN900B upscales lower resolution content well).

Surprised you still lay the panels face down when attaching the bracket or stand with the Sony TVs. Laying the panels flat is especially hard on a panels larger than 75”. Sony’s packaging has styrofoam at the base in three sections for stabilization so you can remove certain sections and attach whatever you need to attach while keeping the panel upright. I was able to attach the stand in its soundbar position on my 83” A90J by myself.

Is there seriously an LED out there that doesn't have DSE? I find it frustrating that I spent big bucks on the QN90A and I can notice vertical lines when there's a lighter image on the screen or when the screen pans during sports. It's much more noticeable on an angle. I then go to a sports bar and see their TV's and none of them seem to have this issue and I am pretty sure they are not caring about DSE. This panel lottery crap is annoying. You either get an OLED that's too dark for most rooms or you get an LED and hope for the best.

Is it me or are TV's today either not quite bright enough (OLED) or TOO bright (mini LED, QLED)? I mean I had a Sumsung QLED and the thing was obnoxious when it would switch from a dark scene to a bright outdoor scene and I could never completely dial that out in settings. Felt like I needed sunglasses. Same with HDR highlights. An indoor scene with windows made the outside glare make me wish someone would pull down a shade or install some curtains. All this extreme brightness can't be good for the eyes either. One reason I think I'm sticking with OLED even though I'm tempted to go back to LCD from my A80j. Might just opt for the slightly brighter C2 instead. At least I won't go (completely) blind watching it.

You don't buy an 8k TV for 8k content, you buy to watch 4k in all its glory. Current 4k TVs are only 3840(Horizontal pixels)x2160(Vertical pixels) so technically they should be called 3.8k TVs. 8k TVs are 7680(H)x4320(V) so can show 4k fully. That's my take on it.

Because the so called 4k TVs are only 3840x2160 (which is less than 4k) so each manufacturer uses their own processing to provide 4k ‘like’ image. It’s in the actual marketing/advertising, that’s what they all say. My point is with an 8k you don’t need any processing trickery for 4k content on a 8k TV (not actually 8k)

BE AWARE!!! that the new HDMI 2.1 capable Sony TV's, this one included, don't work with any Nvidia RTX 3000 and 4000 series cars since after Nvidia's April 512.95 driver. You can't get an image working on any HDMI 2.0 ports on the TV, you just get a garbled frozen image. On the HDMI 2.1 port, only Enhanced (VRR) works, but Z9K still doesn't have local dimming working on in VRR. Also, and this is the biggest issue, this lock you into Game mode so you can't use the GFX card for HTPC purposes as you can't change to other modes such a Cinema/Custom/Standard etc. So no Motion Smoothing or better Local Dimming as you get in Cinema/Custom/IMAX. As for gaming, in VRR you can't use Clearness for 120hz Black Frame Insertion as this only works on Enhanced without VRR.
This is terrible and I'm considering returning my beautiful X95K I just bought. The RTX 4000 series can't install the older Nvidia drivers at all, so and can ONLY be used with Enhance VRR, effectively crippling every nice feature the TV has to offer in the other display modes.
The cause for this seems to be a combination of Sony's HDMI EDID and Nvidia adopting stricter EDID rules. The solution is to use the old driver on the 3000 series and never by another new Nvidia card, or just don't buy a Sony TV if you want the 3000/4000 series card going forward. I hope Sony can get this sorted but I'm not optimistic looking at their slow response to fixing issues.

One thing I really like about your videos is they are honest and accurate. The 85" Sony Z9K is a dog that ain't goin' to bark. No thanks Sony, who in their right mind is going to pay $9000.00 for that pile of junk? Especially when you can get a Sony 83" A90J OLED on sale for half the price and twice the picture quality and complete elimination of the blooming, dirt, etc....

I would consider 8K if 8K content actually existed, but as of now, even 4K has yet to become standard across the board. 8K is so much data, I can understand why.
I guess in the future, 8K gaming will be possible, but outside of that, I don’t see 8K gaining enough traction to motivate content providers to offer up 8K versions of their stuff.

Dont get me wrong ive been known to spend a ridiculous amount of money on things i want but at some point dont you have to take a hard look at what your doing? Especially considering how fast current technology becomes "old technology", sometimes overnight. 4 years from now id bet good money they will be selling cheap hisense tvs with this same technology for a lot less
