So, Paul di Resta is getting a lot of stick lately and...I really don't know what to make of it. I'm neutral on the whole thing. But seeing as how the storm around this dude can hardly be ignored, I figured to make this little ditty and see what's what.

One of my biggest issues with him was when we knew Perez was leaving the now Aston Martin team. And how strongly he was calling for Albon be replaced by him and on multiple occasions even suggested he should replace Russell in Williams. It got so bad with Albon that Horner approached the commentators to more or less tell them to back off and leave Albon alone

In the end the Andretti failed buyout wasn't the money, but the control of the team. But no problem considering Michael said that today and this was recorded earlier!

For all the times he made mistakes in the heat of the moment, this was what made Murray Walker so respected by drivers and colleagues alike. He was fair to all drivers, painting them in the best light he could, even if they were Pay drivers.
Case in Point, Silverstone 1997, a piece from qualifying:
"That's Pedro Diniz, now we all know that Damon Hill has been taking a lot of flack in the last few races from his team boss, Tom Walkinshaw, one of the reasons that Tom was a bit agitated was the fact that Pedro Diniz, who is a very capable driver, but not the fastest in Formula One, has been quicker than Damon. Is he quicker Damon now? Most definitely, he is not, because Pedro Diniz is in 17th place, Damon Hill is in 13th place..."

Thanks for bringing up Damon. I don't believe there is anyone who swoons more for Lewis than that man... and so I get Josh's point. Having never found Paul that bad, then I guarantee it's my own bias at play.
@@dw235 Sky Sports Hamilton is a pretty bad tv channel with its bias; so to have someone who is not towing the company line is quite nice to see. Hearing the gushing of Crofty, Damon Hill, Johnny Herbert etc over the slightest fart Hamilton does has made me turn to the mute button on more than one occasion to the point where I turn on at the start of the race and turn off as soon as the timing screen comes up after the chequered flag.
@@ryuhayabaker I thought I was the only person doing that...the pro Hamilton bias coming from many of those Sky pundits is ridiculous. But then, the table has been set by ITV who spent years, literally years, pissing into Jenson Button's pocket when he couldn't win an egg and spoon race.
I never had any strong feelings one way or another about him either as a driver or a pundit. A source did tell me, however, that while he may have talent and good racecraft, his treatment towards others in the paddock (while in racing) was subpar. In the minds of some, he shared a nickname with Ted Lasso, and not in a good way...

Shame really, he wasn't too dissimilar to di Resta in terms of performance either!
Never had a problem with him, but his comments towards Yuki Tsunoda after Yuki admitted to being surprised at getting a seat for the 2022 season really rubbed me the wrong way.
It was like Paul was mad that an F1 driver told the truth for once instead of being a doublespeaking PR man.
wasn't it DC that said that? either way, it's still a really dumb thing to say really. the fact that someone is mad when a driver says the truth shows how we used to see how controlled the drivers are. which is also probably the reason people are sad that a character like kimi is gonna be gone next year.

Di Resta said basically the same thing and when Rachel (I think) pointed out that she liked his honesty and that there's an additional language barrier for Yuki to deal with he interrupted her with, "This is Formula 1, though. It's the pinnacle of motorsports," which doesn't make much sense considering the number of pay drivers on the grid, and that it kind of came across like he'd prefer Yuki to just lie and pretend his rookie season was perfect.
Wrong pundit I think, David Coulthard went off on Yuki.

@@thisaccountisdead168 Di Resta wasn’t criticising the honesty, he was criticising the mindset. And he’s right. To be successful in F1, you need the confidence and arrogance. You can’t go into a season thinking you probably don’t deserve to be there. If that is your mentality, you build up an inferiority complex and it’s hard to recover from that. Any driver, even if it’s Lewis Hamilton or Marcus Ericsson, needs to believe in themselves 100%.
Has nothing to do with driving "career". It's about his manners as a pundit. His commentaries seems to be tinged with hate for who ever he critizes. He comes across as hateful. It's not like that with Jenson Button or Anthony Davidson or Martin Brundle, Johnny Herbert, etc...
Last season saw his massive hate on Albon and pushing for Checo to get a seat. Yammering about how Albon should always be within .3 seconds off MV and that he's supposed to be a Bottas for MV. Well, this year Checo has done okay but not ALWAYS within .3 off MV even with a better car. Yet nothing from di Rage about Checo. And that race where gave MV a tow in qually...Bottas did same for Hammy but was also able to qualify top 3 himself...
I hope Sky gives JB gets more air than di Rage or even replace him completely. And not just because JB was a World Champ.

Martin Brundle said "Here's the most important person in F1, and he's not blonde" when Vettel was hugging Newey after he won the championship. Brundle knee jerk reaction to Hamilton punting Albon in Austria by saying "WHAT IS ALEX DOING". Brundle saying "Oh he should've let Hamilton go" in 2012 when Maldonado was pushed off track. Even Crofty called him out on his biased reaction to the Spanish 2016 situation with Hamilton and Rosberg.

I don’t agree entirely. I do think he can be negative but I don’t think he ever says anything hateful or intentionally hurtful. I think he just says it how it is, and whether you agree or not, you have to respect that. You need people like Di Resta, don’t be so sensitive about it.

Until a couple of weeks ago I didn't even know that Di Resta was "so" hated. I genuinely like him as a pundit. I've listened to his comments on several FPs/Qualies and I really fail to see the problem. Do I agree with every word he says? No. Is he at the Rosberg level of punditry? I don't think so. But to hate him? Come on, the guy does a decent job.

The f1 title screen was all around vettel head and the car's in the back ground. Most interviews was about vettel and so on. Same when it was Michael s it was mainly about him. The way some of the Sky commentators completely take away from other drivers achievements to focus on Lewis irritates me so much that I honestly love Paul Di Resta being a breath of fresh air. The way they all acted after Monza was a prime example of how much bias there is towards Lewis while Paul sounded more neutral to me by stating both drivers at fault
Monza was 100% max’s fault, Paul just hated Lewis and bum licks max. So he had to go for 50:50 even though it wasn’t.

I think as a driver Paul really was quite good not great but good. Rewatching the 2013 season Paul really carried Force India for the first half of the season. And his drives in the car Spa quali Bahrain almost on the podium really seem to be overshadowed by Nico Hulkenburgs drive in sauber that year. In which really wasn’t all that remarkable as up until the Korea time sauber really weren’t anywhere. As a pundit he really seems to be riding the max train. However I do think he’s quite good as he is an ex F1 driver so he is able to provide that input that other pundits cannot. Not terrible but not brilliant either.
Its refreshing to have paul in sky sports because without him it will just be a hamilton,george and lando fanclub chatroom.
It honestly is unbearable at times. Sky is the only thing you get in the states and it is so obvious the amount of bias. So Paul in contrast to the whole production team being fan club leadership he looks biased. As an American watching I would love to get more of everybody else… especially the Spaniards both are doing great this year but nope they don’t exist to sky only Lewis and the other two. They also have to show max since he currently leads but at times especially if it is Hill you can hear the distaste… it’s honestly gross but no the problem is Paul? Laughable at best. Anybody curious look at Paul and Hill going at it in monza over the crash. Hill is talking like Toto pays him and has his family held hostage.

So you think Hill was biased to lay blame at Verstappen's feet in Monza, turns out he was right, Di Resta blamed Lewis and was adjudged wrong by the FIA, but for some reason it's Hill that's biased and not Di Resta. I guess it's confirmation bias, you see what you want to see no matter the evidence to the contrary.

I thought I was the only one! I don't care if he's biased towards verstappen to be honest.. it kinda balances out all the pro Hamilton stuff from the likes of Jenson button. My issue is that practice, which sky do a really good job of covering and making somewhat entertaining, is generally ruined by him. While most of the other commentators and pundits realise they've got to keep an audience engaged and sometimes thats with a bit of banter, etc, diresta seems unable or unwilling to participate in this and just cuts people dead on air. It happens a lot. I'd much rather listen to chandock or kravitz... Whatever their careers lacked in driving standards (if they existed at all) they're fans of the sport and know the audience are interested in the same things they are rather than using it as an opportunity for points scoring or trying to be the biggest d*CK in the room.
Tbf Paul Di Resta sways as much towards Max as Sky and F1 Twitter sways towards Lando and Lewis. Paul Di Resta, at least that I've noticed, is equally as biased as everyone else, but everyone else is biased towards the British drivers.

Di Resta isn't overly biased in favor of Verstappen, it's just that his opinions often contradict SkyF1's other pundits, most of whom are truly biased members of the Hamilton fan club.

It's not like Sky F1 is british, aren't they. You hardly gonna find unbiased commentary from Ziggo Sport, why do you expect it from Sky F1? They are paid by british fans, F1 were the ones who decided to show that broadcast in other countries, doesn't mean they have to be neutral

Hmm, I never saw Paul as questionably biased or anything. I wouldn’t want him on commentary as he doesn’t been the best at picking things up when in the main light. But I always saw that crafty and Martin seem to have a definite British bias so his difference of opinion to them never made me think he had a max bias
All commentators have a little bias, it's just how they manage it live on commentary. The Dutch commentator though lol... That guy doesn't even try to hide it.

- Max is only the 2nd Dutch driver to score a podium

@@jamespicksley5781 I'll keep my biases all I want. I can have them because I'm just an average fucking viewer. And I know my biases are far fucking healthier, safer and more logical and down to earth than whatever copium hamilton fans are huffing on the daily.
As a commentator however, you are supposed to be impartial. You're providing a universal service to all viewers, regardless of who they support. You can't sprinkle in your own bias into it because you are alienating a huge group of people who are also fans of the sport.

However, there certainly is an apparent bias towards British drivers from the British commentators
Sky's entire coverage is biased. There's 20 drivers with 10 respective team principles on that grid all of which are competing, granted not all AT the same level, but still IN the same level of motorsport. Sky's pundits are nothing more than a bunch of lovestruck fanboys who are only interested in the opinions of their favourite 8 drivers race in race out!!

He was one of my favorite drivers on the grid. The Scottish Checo Perez. Sometimes he would start among the backmarkers just to overcut literally three quarter of the entire grid, finishing somewhere around 4th to 6th. Criminally underrated

I only remember during his F1 driving days he was always interviewed on TV after each race and he was mid grid during a time when only the fastest drivers were given attention and known before the F1 online media explosion.

If people hat Di Resta for Max bias they are pure hypocrites because they love Brundle, Crofty, and Damon Hill despite their relentless Lewis Bias
The difference is 7 world championships and a much more impressive pre-F1 career. Even their careers in F1: Crashtappen vs beating Alonso in the same car as a rookie after they dethroned Schumi.
I'll be the first to agree that Hamilton doesnt deserve the WDC this year given his performances but no one in the history of the sport has had a more impressive career than pre-Merc Hamilton so it makes sense people laud him as the best.

Crofty is really good though. People don't understand how hard it is to get that level of hype into commentary.
I dislike him because he's just dog water of a commentator. Often tends to spurt out nonsense and make silly mistakes when commentating (for an example, during the Italian GP he said that Kubica's car was the one who had trouble, instead of Giovinazzi + he mixed up their race numbers), having a clear bias towards Hamilton (but also sometimes blowing smoke up Verstappen's rear end). All in all, he's a sucky commentator. I much prefer Brundle over him.

One of the greatest sports commentators was Vin Skully. He commentated for the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers for over fifty years and is universally loved baseball fans because despite his undoubted bias for his team it didn't come at the expense of the other team or the players. I am relatively new to F1 so the hate towards Paul is something I don't completely get but I agree that the commentators should do there best to keep their bias out of the commentary booth. Hard to do, but I believe the job of the commentator is to enhance the audience's experience and negative comments can detract from some people's experience.
The thing I didn’t much like about him is while driving in f1 he would trash he’s team endlessly without giving them the pat on the back for trying to make the car they had work with… just made it seem like he wasn’t happy with even having the call up to the main team from test or reserve driver.

Must admit, I've never picked up on any bias from Di Resta. I know he had issues with Hamilton Sr but he does rate Lewis. He is at best an average colour commentator, but a very good racing driver. He waffles an awful lot and speaks in riddles a bit, rather than clear sentences that make sense. This is my only gripe.

Raced Paul as a Kid, his parents would send him to the track 2-3 days BEFORE anyone had arrived, he pretty much never went to school just did laps every day. Yes he won a lot but he was on a different $$ bracket. He was pretty talentless tbh
I can tell you without having to watch the video: Because when he was in F1 it was always everyone else's fault why things went wrong for him, even when even a muppet could see he'd messed up all by himself. Good drivers can recognise and admit to their errors.
His whole shtick now is "I'm an ex-F1 driver", leaving out the part of being a crap F1 driver.
Also he's got an empty vacuum where his charisma should be when behind the mic. I don't care about the bias, everyone has one whether they admit or not but Paul's just so damned dull. He's the opposite of David Croft: Paul's probably got something interesting to say but conveys it in the most tedious fashion possible while Croft has bugger-all of use to report but animatedly shouts it to everyone.

He's a decent driver and a relatively sound bloke. I just think his personality is a bit too dull for a main pundit and I find him boring. Is "bias" the Internet's new favorite word or something? I think they do a pretty sound job of reporting on all the ins and outs of the whole grid. Alot of those pundits have been reporting on F1 since the 90's or have been around the sport even longer than that. Just for a second imagine if it was an Italian TV company....It would be about 1 team and it's two drivers and ex drivers and that's it.
People throwing around the word "bias" are never complaining about bias *towards* their preferred driver/team, only ever against, so probably not worth paying attention to.

I agree, but its also a refreshing departure from the massive British bias the majority of the broadcast team makes no effort to really hide. It would be nice to just have a more neutral broadcast team because the Lewis and British Driver bias overall can get pretty grating to listen to weekend after weekend.

It's been grating me so much this season that I've entirely stopped watching the main broadcast, (I'm in the us so the only coverage we can get is F1TV) and now pretty much exclusively watching the race from the pitlane channel and have found it to be quite refreshing. Sam Collins and the team is quite a blessing to watch over the main broadcast.
I understand from a brittisch point of view, Sky what is a brittisch broadcaster should have a bias towards brittisch drivers, and to me as a non-brit, this bias is pretty much present at Sky, favoring Hamilton and now Norris as well alot, and thats fine with me.
Since Sky is imho fair enough to put other views at the mic as well, and have a nice discussion for us fans, but if everyone like said in this video is biased towards the brittisch drivers, its a boring show pretty fast. I like Di resta also favors other drivers, and i dont see a issue with a reporter in this setting to have a bias, as they all clearly have a favorite themself.
Just like Damon hill allmost crawls into Hamiltons backside out of fanboism, and even when Hamilton makes a mistakes justifies it, or turns the blame towards otherdrivers making Hamilton a victim... Its all part of the game, and part to satisfy the hunger of certain groups of fans, Sky heavely caters the english, with maybe a few exceptions.
And i also hear Johnny Herbert also make praises about Max, think he was one of the first calling him a upcoming worldchampion on Sky, way before Di-Resta started his Bias.
