I use this every unit every night when I go to bed.
It's great because there's plenty of volume, and there's only 3 controls on the whole unit, which is easy to operate even in the dark. I like the whole 'less is more' for a bedside radio.

This radio is very near the top of the list of modern *DAYTIME* AM radio receivers made today and couples very well with inductive loops. Take it outside or to the wilderness during the day away from power lines and electronics. It was my ONLY lifeline to news and important information about power grid damage and repairs, cleared roads, storm damage, and where to get gas, food, and emergency aid after two powerful hurricanes hit my region in 2020. The daytime rangemof this receiver more than doubles on AM outside after power outages and reception is crystal clear.
Wear a good set of headphones to get a crisp audio tone. Also try headphones with the Sangean PR-D4W when using the more narrow bandwidth settings and you`ll get a pleasant DX surprise. I ran my ICF-19 24/7 from EBL rechargeable batteries for 12 days straight after hurricane Laura and never drained them. But you can use a standard solar power station solar charging cable and connect the EBL Universal Charger to the 12v port of a folding portable solar panel to recharge and also directly power a USB fan from its other ports while recharging a power bank.

This is a nice basic AM/FM radio - easy to read dial perfect for those especially who do not like the digital displays or more complicated controls. Surprised they did not include an AC adapter option but that could be a plus too. I recently got a FIOLEES brand TD-618 digital radio "AM FM SW 21BAND RADIO MUSIC PLAYER" - maybe review that one sometime.

I can listen to almost any radio on FM and at least somewhat enjoy it, but when it comes to AM, I am Very picky about the speaker tone when listening to talk radio. Out of the approximate 50 radios in my collection, the"19" is my favorite one without tone or bass and treble controls. Music on AM is a tad bit muddy (nowhere near as bad as the Sangean prd4w I had), but news, talk, and sports are right on the money for me. FM tone seems pretty well balanced too, just wished it had a tad more overall volume like the Panasonic 2400d. The 19 is the best value under $30 hands down!

Hej Todderbert thanks for the bandscan the Sony IFC-19 looks very nice and it seems to preform very well I don't have this radio but I'm definitely thinking about buying it I like the white tuning dial easy to see frequencies and which one you are on. Then the Sony's IFC-19 seems to have a really nice audio love thata simple radio but sometimes that's all you need good morning Todderbert or rather night where you are. morning coffee for me and listen to my new Pocket Radio Givoust 239WB, I am very satisfied with that radio take care.

I have thought of buying this though I have to buy from the US and I’m in the UK, it would cost around £45 not sure if I should just get it. I have the Sony ICF F10 it’s similar but analogue it’s great in my location and the two D cells run it for around 28 days and nights at a reasonable volume, I have so many radios already but this my favourite form factor and battery size 😂
There isn’t really anything worth listening to in the UK though haha, I stream US talk radio but because of copyright it’s now banned in the UK so have to use a VPN 😢

That is a great radio and, yeah, basically pocket radio (P26/P27) current draw (at low volume, and 3 cells vs 2) in a bigger case with a great sounding speaker. Radio Jay Allen says 30 at low, 100mA at high. Alkaline D 12-15Ah at 50-100mA... Much as I like Sangean's radios, I think I prefer the sound of the Sony, most of the time, especially for talk radio. None of the Sangean ones, even the little D-18, go below 80mA even with the volume all the way down (and that's with FOUR cells). Yeah they're digital, but that current is mostly from the amplifier chip's quiescent load. But then, we all use rechargeable batteries anyway...

Be careful of the alkaline batteries. They do leak. I use ether lithium batteries that don’t leak or nimh rechargeable . I realize that this radio from a cost perspective alkaline is best
till they leak. That Sony is very decent. The Sangean D-9w is the best radio I have been able to find. The only thing close is the D-5w. Splitting hairs with my statement.

I have been playing with radios since I was in elementary school. 720 780 890 all come in nice. I have been able to pick up WABC in England . Next time I will try your local 720,780, and 890 makes it across the pond. Thanks for dropping me a note.

I usually use EBL or Tenergy D NiMH in my D-cell radios. Or there are AA-to-D adapters that would be fine for this one, even if you only loaded 1 of the 3 possible AAs per adapter.

Good for you. If you want EBL has 2 chargers that offer a discharge feature. One is for D, C, AA, AAA, sizes, four at a time. The other charger is for AA,AAA, size eight at one time. They say nimh batteries have no memory. Not true if you keep
charging half used. Four nicd batteries I would always use a full cycle because they definitely have memory. I have adapters but use the real deal. I haven’t used rechargeable lithium as of yet. That is next.

Quilla, AA and AAA are available with EBL and I think Tenergy. Panasonic nimh are only available in AA and AAA. I think Panasonic batteries are some of the best. They are made in Japan. Japanese craft is excellent. EBL seem fine also. Anything you need battery wise is at Amazon.
