  • A new year is almost upon us. Why not give up spending, except for essential household expenses, for an entire year? Too long? How about challenging yourself to a month of no spending?
In this video I go over how you can prepare for a YEAR (or a month) of no spending by cutting out all non-essential items and budgeting in advance for only the things you decide are most important.

I did a no spend for the entire 2018 and paid off over $70,000 in debt. It’s possible. I joined a fb group called Hardcore No Spend 2018 but we are dropping the 2018 to continue. I recommend the entire year. One month at a time.

Assuming you are making very good money to pay off that much debt... How on earth is it that people making 50,000 plus go in to so much debt yet people making under 30,000 are doing much better and debt free ( in most cases) is there a target on you guys or what.? Like the day you turn 18 three things are for sure people come out of the wood work wanting you to get a new car, get a credit card, and join the army!

When I have a goal I declare, a month of austerity”, “a 6 months of austerity” or “a year of austerity” depending on my goal. My friends told me I was like Chairman Mao Zedong! But that’s how I bought my house, (had big down payment). The first thing I cut out was all those house and garden magazines, decorating magazines and lifestyle magazines........and instead of reading about beautiful homes I saved up to buy one! It’s hard to do a no spend year, but it’s worth it if we can reach our goals.

My church held a "FebFast" a few years ago, and my family gave up fast food and additional trips to the grocery store. We had gotten into the habit of running to "grab something quick" because we were in a hurry. This fast forced us to plan ahead, prep meals, and allocate importance of Convenience vs. Peace. We ended up continuing the fast for a few months, and it saved a LOT of money. (Mom and Dad also lost a few pounds!)
We need to do it again this year!

It's been on the back of my mind a no send year. It would be an easy $200 minimum a month savings for me for starters since the last four months I've been doing 2 lunch sandwhiches [only] at Jimmy John's twice a week at $13/$14. That would equate a sinking fund in car state tag out of the way in a snap by Feb 28th, sinking fund for 5-month car insurance in a snap by May 21, sinking fund by August for city car tag, sinking fund for bills while I'm laid off in the winter by December with no effort at all.

Good one - my goal next year is (related I guess) NO WASTE. I'm going to start a Waste Log and record what I've wasted money on - food I haven't consumed, things I didn't use or changed my mind about. I think this is my Achilles heel and I'll really be trying to not write too many things. Hopefully this will make me think twice before I buy things.. ! Your idea here is excellent.

We did a no spend month last month as well. The most difficult part for us was not eating out. We have two kids and I just graduated nursing school so we relied on take-out WAY too much. We just began our own debt free journey and are trying to spend very, very little. For the first time ever, we ended the month with money leftover to put on debt. It was the best feeling in the world. Been binge watching your videos for the last couple hours. 😊

First, I love your look today! You look 10 years younger. I don't know what you did but you should definitely keep doing it :) And second, Hubby and I are in! We've committed to doing a 6 month shopping ban. Consumables only, and only if we've used up the ones we have. Obviously we'll still pay our bills and buy food and gas for the car. But unless it breaks or wears out nothing else. We've set a pretty strict budget for eating too, about 25% of what we usually spend eating out. Best luck from our family to yours!

I really appreciate you. The fact you spoke about reviewing last years expenses is brilliant.
This year has been the worst financial year for us but I’m feeling very confident for 2019. I’ve already started purchasing birthday presents for the kids birthdays (March, June, July, August, October) and also I put aside $10 per week for Christmas which is already a huge relief cause that’s where I struggle the most.
And the realisation that we have spent so much on take away and silly little things we just didn’t need.

We are planning a no spend January as well, or at least I am (not sure about my husband). The year is way too large a goal for us, though we’ve reduced our spending money by half. We do a written, monthly budget, and then have sinking funds for car maintenance and such. Reducing our spending money by half is going to be great for us as a family. Glad to find your channel.

A no-spend month is surely doable in my household, but I dare not even attempt a master plan for the year. Our household income can fluctuate greatly, and the money we have in the months of Jan. and Feb may be an entirely different beast than say, Sept and Oct. Makes it tough to do more than a general 'goals' list. But I like the idea of monthly.

Have you heard of the savers credit you can get a 50% savings on your tax bill up to $4,000 by putting money into your roth ira. You have to ask your tax accountant about this deduction and it only applies if you make under $65,000 a year. Clark Howard had an article on this thought it would interst you.

I get that personal finance is personal, but is a NO SPEND year really supposed to include things like ballet lessons and gym memberships? I'm having a hard time deciding for myself if I really can do a no spend year, or if I just need to cut way back.

Hi Dana! I've heard of a no spend but never really found out the details of it all. My question is, is the no spend basically what you have not planned for, you can only spend on planned and budgeted things? Tfs!!

Yes, exactly. The idea is to cut something so that you can save more money. Like if you usually buy coffee every morning - you'd cut that out for a month (or a year). It's a challenge in which you sacrifice something in order to spend less. Hope that helps. 😊

I have a line in my budget for birthdays that I know I'll b buying gifts for. If you allocate $xx per month for the total expense & shop sales, you can be prepared when the birthday arrives.
