I have the 35 f1.4 and still feel happy about that after seeing this video. The only things I prefer on the f1.8 is the weight and price. I love the Zeiss style rendering and it’s plenty sharp, especially for portraits. I like the aperture ring as I shoot in aperture priority.
Thank you so much for making these videos. Every time I convince myself I need a lens, I come search your videos for a comparison and usually see very quickly that a lot of times that the difference in quality isn't near as great and the difference in price. Thanks again!
I have the 1.4 but def thinking about the 1.8 for when I want to carry a lighter setup. Financially it's hard to justify for me, though, to have both. I love the 1.4
Thank you so much for this comparison. I already preordered the 35/1.8 and can’t wish for it to arrive. I was always hesitant about getting the 35/1.4 due to its size and the wait for the 35/1.8 but it looks like me being patient finally paid off. You just helped me solidify my purchase. Thanks again!
I have the 35mm 1.8 as prime lens and the 18-135mm and those two cover 98% of what ever I need. I really value and like the small compact lenses Sony is offering, especially on the a6600 body.
Nice review but as a suggestion, why don’t you use gaffer tape to fix down the aperture ring? You could leave it at F1.4 or on A and change aperture in camera. Where bokeh is king, I’d pick the F1.4 still. Even if you don’t like it, I think having the aperture ring is a plus, especially for video.
Thanks for this comparison. A couple things. 1. Others have mentioned this before comparing weights needs to be in the same system 2. If you hate the aperture ring, just get gaffer's tape and keep it at A and use the camera dials, or if you like shooting at a specific aperture, tape it at that setting.
I own the 2.8 also but 2.8 isnt high enough aperture. Its an old lens ( the 1st they brought out for the a7 system ) this is a much better option. Plus you are paying for a Zeiss badge in my opinion.
I have the 35mm 2.8 too, for sure this newer 1.8 prime will have more improved bokeh, cleaner bokeh balls, and maybe less vignetting than the zeiss. I would probably trade the zeiss in for this new model based on my mentioned observations. The lens might have been cheaper too;$100-$200 off but due to increased tax on china goods we are left to this final price.
If you look at the leaves in the 1.8 pics, there appears to be worms in the patterns whereas the 1.4 is smooth as silk. I've noticed this with other cheaper lenses as well. I'm surprised that this isn't a deal breaker for anyone.
For size and weight the clear winner is the 35mm F1.8, but I believe the 35mm F1.4 outputs the better image. Sharpness isn't everything, but I would've compared both at f1.8. I'm sure the Zeiss at f1.8 would be as sharp or sharper than the new Sony 35mm 1.8 at 1.8. Because obviously f1.8 has more in focus than f1.4. The AF conclusion was a surprize to me as the Zeiss 35 f1.4 is one of the strongest AF lenses in my kit.
Too bad you didn't test the lenses for light transmission. Set it on fixed shutter and aperture and look at the iso on both photos to see how much light you really lose. Also, there's also the samyang 35 1.4 which doesn't have the aperture ring.
Thanks, your review confirms my suspicions. I did pre-order the new 35mm 1.8 a week ago. I prefer prime lenses all the way and until now I didn't see ANY 35mm worth buying (either too big, too slow or too pricey)
35mm 1.4 gives dreamy images. I would keep it if I had it or buy it used as there would be plenty available. If you can afford it I would keep both. One for the studio and the other for the street.
so glad to hear its a great lens I've sold my sigma 35mm f1.4 and have the new Sony 35mm f1.8 on pre order can't wait to try it out, great comparison video nicely done!
Thank you Manny for the non-biased review. I'm still on the fence on this lens. I need a 35mm focal length. The 1.4 is a 50/50 with QC issues, the Sigma 1.4 is heavy, has focus hunting issues, and there's no 35mm G master! When you mentioned the low light AF was faster, I was like Yessss. And it's sharper despite the rendering not being as good as the 1.4.

Great video thank you. I use the sigma 35mm 1.4 after calibration from there dock on a Nikon d810 and it’s changed my wedding photography love it amazing. Also only £650. Taylor Jackson has started using the z6 and loves the Nikon s35 1.8 amazing quality
I hate the aperture ring as well. Drives me nuts 99% of the time. I was shooting video at a wedding today, though, and it came in handy. But the non-linear digital focus ring made it super frustrating to use for video (but that’s the case with nearly all e-mount lenses). Pretty surprised that the 1.8 bested the 1.4 in AF. The 1.4 is one of the strongest Sony lenses I’ve tried for AF.
Manny, I dropped my 50 zeiss and the same thing happened to the mount ring, it bent and it was really tight to fit on I finally ordered a brand new mount ring that was available through sony for $130 shipped and fix it myself.
Great video as always Manny, very informative! Thx for your work! I also have the 35 1.4 ZA and I will also buy the 1.8 especially because of faster AF speed in low light for events but I'll also keep the 1.4 to use it in studio or when I need creamier bokeh..
Manny Ortiz same, I have the Sigma + the MC-11 and I feel like I'm getting an arm workout with it lol. Very very very very tempted to get the Sony, but I have to sell my sigma first 😅
One of the reasons I went for the Sigma ART lenses is that I hate the physical aperture ring. I would have appreciated it if Sony went for the Nikon AF-D lens approach, where the physical aperture ring could be locked for auto operations.
I own the 35 1.4 Zeiss.... But now that I'm doing overseas documentary work, I can't be stuffed carrying this massive lens anymore. Think you've helped me cross the line to get it.

The A7III/35mm f1,8 is just the perfect combo, even more perfect now with, I hope, soon upcoming A7IV.
I feel like a good 1.8 lens will usually beat a 1.4 lens in terms of focusing and size , weight , CA, and sharpness at its widest aperture though? Right ?
As a hobbyist photographer, I don't want to spend money on either those lenses. I have Yongnuo 35mm f/2 for about $80, Canon mount on my A7ii, and I love it. For video, you would probably want this new Sony 35mm f/1.8.
Yes you can tell the difference. The f1.4 really comes into its own during low light when you want to keep the iso low to reduce noise but keep the shutter high to reduce motion blur, I believe the difference is about 33% light difference between the two stops. I love mine and would never sell it.
Other than the weight, do you think 24GM 1.4 is a better buy than 35 mm 1.8, if you're both a APSC and full-frame shooter? That 24mm is actually 35, 2.1 on A6xxx.
Hello, I want to ask you something. if you could have chance to buy only one lens, Which one you choose ? 35mm f1.4 Zeiss or 55mm f1.8 ? And one more question, if you have a Zeiss 35mm 1.4za already, what would be your second lens ? 55mm 1.8 or Sony FE 85mm 1.8 ? I am really excited about what you think. Thank you
So I got the Distigon 35/1.4 ZA used in mint condition and well centered copy for only $1000. Based on that price which would you choose? For me, different from you, I love having an aperture ring. Almost a must have so take that outa your comparison? What do you think?
Thanks again for the test Manny. This lens is not yet available in The Netherlands so I tried the Samyang/Rokinon 35mm 1.4, and even though it is cheaper it was not extremely sharp and vignetting was a bit too much. Going to check the Sony 35 once it is available to compare
Niice video Manny. Thanks. I'm using the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 for that 35mm zone right now. Any idea how much improvement I would get upgrading to the 35mm 1.8? (besides the faster aperture). I work in video exclusively, mostly documentary and I already have teh 55mm f1.8 that I looooove for interviews and such.
Manny, thanks. Is it possible for you to compare the Sony f1.8 to the older Zony f 2.8 lens? I am sure that many people would be interested if it is worthwhile to pick up the new lens if they already own the older, smaller lens in their kit.
I’m super interested in a comparison of the new Sony 35/1.8 vs Sony-Zeiss 35/2.8. How much of an advantage is the extra stop in the 1.8 really worth? How does focusing and ultimately IQ compare? Thx
Got the 35 Distagon 2 days ago. It's built like a tank, that aperture ring and the images it produces all add up to me being completely in awe of it. No regrets here, even with the 15ish percent discount Amazon have been offering on the 1.8.
@@cstone710 Not anymore there isn't. Amazon did indeed have it at a discounted price. Saw it myself on Amazon and here's how I found out about it: www.sonyalpharumors.com/for-eu-readers-first-100-euro-off-on-the-new-sony-35mm-f-1-8-fe-sold-by-amazon-uk/ Amazon also recently had a 10% off on the 24 GM for EU buyers. Not sure if that's still ongoing though, can't be bothered to check...guess that makes me like you. :)
Thanks, your videos are great or maybe it's the way you talk about how you use gear or just because you focus on important points. I've sold the 35 1.4 and it was an hard decision because I love the 35mm so much and, because I used it a lot, I was easy with the lens, the focus, the closer distance, etc. But Ive sold the lens. I thought the 24-70 could be enough to shoot but it's not. So this 35mm f/1.8 is a nice option. And I agree, the aperture ring is a bad idea. Anyway, keep going to make video but take your time. You don't have to produce a lot.
Thanks for the video. I’ve owned both of these lenses but a while ago moved on to best in class 35/1.4 GM and I still have that. Problem is I now need a smaller lighter lens for my compact “C” bodies so I’m considering picking up a used FE 35/1.8. Is it still worth buying as a travel lens? I want something at least f/2 or f/1.8 so it can be used in lower light. Unlike you though I like an aperture ring but since they added the front dial on the A7CR I can live without it. Take care.
Hey Manny ! What do You think of the sony 35 mm 1.8 in comparison to the sigma 35mm 1.4??? Only problem with the sigma is the autofocus is off sometimes....
Insightful and informative video Manny, answered what I would have wanted to know about the lens. Nice job! ... Do you have a recommendation on where to sell used lenses?
Thanks for this nice review. Can you make a Sony FE 35mm f/1.8 vs Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art review? They have closer pricing and they are both good lens.
Perfect timing with video. Just considering selling my Z35 1.4 and get the new 1.8. The zeiss isn't really that sharp at 1.4 and since I then usually stop down a bit i am just carrying that extra weight for no reason. The 35mm 1.8 will go great with the 85mm 1.8 as a small two lens kit when I don't want to carry the GM zooms. Thank you :)
I will stick with my Samyang AF 35mm f/1.4. After the software update it got better than before on my A7 III. But that size and weight of the Sony FE 35mm f/1.8 does seem very appealing! Thanks for your insight.
Which 35mm lens do you own now and what do you think of the 35mm 1.8 after seeing what it can do?
Heyyyy MANYYYYYY can u send me a lens please??? lol 😂🤔
I personally have the sigma 35 1.4 and love it. It's usually my go to for family portraits and such.
I'd like to see what it's like compared to the sigma 35mm 1.4 art because I nearly bought that the other week on the day of the Sony announcement.
Andy Smith I’m personally not a fan of the 35mm sigma. It’s just way to large for these camera bodies (for a 35)
I thought the Ziess was about the same size as the sigma.

FYI 1.4 pounds is 635 grams
That's true but it is virtually double the weight, so that is definately something to consider when buying.
This bothered me as well. When doing a comparison KEEP IS COMPARABLE!

how is the manual focus of the 35mm 1.8? Is it focus by wire or linear? Does it have hard stops or some end points to it when you manual focus?
Thanks Mannyfor make my decision easier. I've just bought 35 1.8.
Also I have 85 mm 1.8 sony and it is great lens.
There's no discount on the 1.8 its not even out yet.
@@cstone710 Not anymore there isn't. Amazon did indeed have it at a discounted price. Saw it myself on Amazon and here's how I found out about it: www.sonyalpharumors.com/for-eu-readers-first-100-euro-off-on-the-new-sony-35mm-f-1-8-fe-sold-by-amazon-uk/
Amazon also recently had a 10% off on the 24 GM for EU buyers.
Take care.
This was so helpful, thank you!
Now that the new 35mm 2.8 Tamron is out. Would you do a comparison?
Hey Manny ! What do You think of the sony 35 mm 1.8 in comparison to the sigma 35mm 1.4??? Only problem with the sigma is the autofocus is off sometimes....
Great vid man 🤙
Insightful and informative video Manny, answered what I would have wanted to know about the lens. Nice job! ... Do you have a recommendation on where to sell used lenses?
i hope you also had comparison with the zeiss 35mm f2.8 in the next review
Good comparison and review 👍
Thanks for this nice review. Can you make a Sony FE 35mm f/1.8 vs Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art review? They have closer pricing and they are both good lens.
Do you think that 35mm is a good focal length for group pictures?
Manny, do you notice when the lens (fe 1.8) is not attached in the camera, something sliding inside the lens when you flip it up and down
Perfect timing with video.
Another very good video, thanks for your time making this Manny. Question, which A7 were you shooting with? Thanks again!
I will stick with my Samyang AF 35mm f/1.4. After the software update it got better than before on my A7 III. But that size and weight of the Sony FE 35mm f/1.8 does seem very appealing! Thanks for your insight.
Dennis van Tol I have the same lenses, is it easy to update?
@@IanMcCausland Yes very easy! You need a lens station though... Done within a few minutes.
