    Some of the absolute best bike reviews around!

  • @morganlee3050

    I’ve got about 150 miles on this bike so far and agree with everything mentioned in this review. Climbs great, descends with well damped control and bottomless feel, is light, fast and fun. My local trails are long fire road climbs and short fast singletrack descents. It’s the perfect tool for this job. I’m 6’1” and chose a S5, weighs 29.6 lbs sans pedals.

      Have you ridden it over many roots and in tighter technical terrain? Curious how the flex stay responds to that

    • @morganlee3050
      @morganlee3050 4 года назад

      @@ehvoslef not many rooted trails here in SoCal, but I’ve taken it on many with small to medium size rock gardens. Good example to look up is the long, high speed rocky descent of Rock-It trail in Aliso & Wood Canyons. The rear suspension stays plush and soaks up all the chatter/chunder and doesn’t seem to have any brake-jack effect when trying to control speed. A friend following me last time out commented how stable the rear end looked through that section. Note that I have the fork set to factory for rebound and compression, the rear set to click #2 on the low-speed compression (black knob on the shock) and the compression lever open all the time.

      @@morganlee3050 I know the OC terrain fairly well and have one of these on order. Couple questions. (1) Did you notice pedal bob on climbs, like Cholla or Luge climb? I see you are using the same setting (low comp, rebound #2) that the flow mountain bike reviewer recommended to smooth out climbs. So maybe that is the key. (2) I am thinking about upgrading to carbon wheels. Did you do the same or any thoughts? I am planning to replace my 2020 Trek Fuel Ex 9.8 with this bike. The Trek is strong, but I like the nimbleness and lightweight feeling of Specialized bikes better (I have a 2021 Epic Evo for comparison) and the Trek is sluggish in technical turns IMO and weighs more, even though it is a steady climber and also very plush, capable decender. I have yet to see a STJ Carbon review compared to Fuel Ex 9.8, unfortunately.

    • @morganlee3050
      @morganlee3050 3 года назад

      @@rwanderer102 I’ve got about 700 miles on it now and am in the habit of leaving the shock open all the time. The only time i put it in the mid position is for climbs with large obstacles or dips. This helps support the suspension to power out of the dips more easily while seated. The wheels are stock and perfectly good. Dont feel like they are holding me back and the only reason to upgrade would be for bling. I’m super pleased with the bike overall for the trails i ride here in SoCal. Haven’t ridden the Trek so cant help out there.

    • @shallowcaster
      @shallowcaster 4 года назад +1

      Joshua Helm, My last bike was an 2012 alloy Giant Anthem (100mm XC). This bike is a lot more plush but still very efficient. I keep the rear shock in the Trail (middle) setting and it works very well for all the riding that I do. We don’t have long uphills here in Florida but it scratches up the short technical climbs just as well as my Giant.

    • @Drogos79
      @Drogos79 3 года назад

      very interested in that too. From my experience with Fuel EX and stumpy alloy on older horst suspension. They are both pretty plush on downs. Stumpy might be edging out on climbs only because I threw bigger spacer in the back. It was very linear in stock form. Stumpy will still hang a bit more though on bigger hits....say couple bigger roots in succession that u can't jump or go around. Fuel EX's rear wheel would move out of the way easier/faster. Might have something to do with 2.6 tires on fuel. I have yet to beat my Fuel EX PRs on shorter segments with some moderate climbs...which is surprising because stumpy bobs around less....I think. Very close though. My guess is carbon stumpy would be much better on climbs and hopefully equally good on downs.

      Please give me some feedback on the new bike - are you happy with your purchase?

    • @aaronbehindbars
      @aaronbehindbars 3 года назад +1

      @@nl3712 Wow, I posted my comment 11 months ago and it's only been 2 months since I finally got my 2022 model (thanks supply chain and shortages). Anyway, I do love the new bike, despite is ending up being $1000 more than the 2021 model.
      What I ended up doing was buying a Stumpjumper Alloy Comp in April figuring I could resell it for close to my initial investment once my Carbon Expert arrived and that way I could also try out the fit and make sure I like it before really blowing a ton of cash on the higher model.
      I nearly just held onto the Alloy model, especially when the Expert's price increased $1k. For something with modest riding ability, I really didn't need the expert. I upgraded the wheels on the alloy bike to the Roval Traverse Carbon which made a huge difference. That bike was a decent climber with the carbon hoops. It wasn't as snappy as my old Camber both climbing and shuffling through tight singletrack. The Stumpy is longer, slacker, and heavier so no surprise.
      In the end, I still bought the expert because it's what I wanted to begin with and I ended up really liking the 2022 gloss white color they did. Plus, the fork is the latest update to the Fox 34 and it is absolutely amazing compared to the bottom end Fox suspension on tge alloy model. Everything is just a notch or three better. It was a lot of money, but I have no regrets.
      I do miss my Camber and wish I had kept it because it was a fast, fun bike. The Stumpy is missing that eager, snappy feeling that XC oriented bikes have. The Stumpy is hands down more capable and forgiving, though.
