I think Pearl is definitely a male. My 14 year old tiel was heavily pearled when I got him as a baby and was thought to be female but he lost most of the pearls over the span of 2 years. Male cockatiels come into breeding age around 18 mos so that may be why you are now seeing some courtship behavior. The males are definitely more vocal. It does not change what a wonderful bird you have whether Pearl is male or female. You have done a great job of raising a sweet bird. (sweet birds, Pillow is a sweetie too) The only reason I would get a gender test is if you plan to get another cockatiel. The male courting can get quite intense if there is a female around. Otherwise I would not put Pearl through the stress. The calling that Pearl does when you are out of sight is may be to locate you. Cockatiels in the wild will call out loudly to locate their flock and that instinct behavior is present in many domestic cockatiels. Pearl may be doing the same to locate you and know that you are near. My tiel does this all the time when he can't see us. He will yell/whistle loudly and sometimes he just calls my sons name who he is very bonded to. The little "songs" that Pearl does are also a very male trait. You may be able to teach Pearl some tunes. Sorry for the lengthy post. Love your two little birds and how your videos are not only entertaining but also informative for those thinking of getting a bird. :)
Did it start disappearing by time? I have two in the age around a year but they are 100%perl but one of them sign like my other Grey male thx you for sharing you experience
I think Pearl is definitely a boy. In the video he/she was doing something called heart wings when singing and only male cockatiels do that. I am not sure why the pearls haven’t faded but I’m pretty sure pearl is a male. Also the strut is so adorable. My cockatiel Louie does that and he will walk and strut and then blow kisses to everyone :) You should try to teach Pearl some songs. My cockatiel will sing The Addams Family theme song in his cage instead of screaming which is great because I can’t stand the loud screaming either!
I’m putting my own opinions on her you can see her/him tail the patterns in most case mean she/him is a female but not official unless you do a test but I say she/him it’s definitely a 50/50 but I do think it might be a male
I believe Pearl is a male because Pearl does the same thing as my two males. Calvin is a white face grey male while Sully is a pied male cockatiel. Both of my males love strutting, head bobbing and singing. My other tiel, June, is 13 months old and is a luntino pearl whom I have not tested yet either. However, I refer to June as a female because she has shown hormonal behavior towards us by showing her vent 😅
I got six budgies I am thinking about getting a cockatiel but I I’m not sure about the cage or if they would be safe in the same cage I have a big cage but a cockatiel might hurt my budgies you think it is ok
@@switchgamer0820 Its okay to have the budgies and cockatiels interact outside of their cages. However, it is best to keep the cockatiel in a seperate cage.

It looks like your cockatiel is actually a pearl pied and not just a pearl. The pied gene in a pearl pied male causes the males to keep their pearls longer. That would explain why he still has some pearling.
nope my female cockatiel loves to act like a male she is basically boss of my other 2 male cockatiels we thought she was a male but Nah she is a female 👀 and she doesn't let other people touch her except my family
Thank you. I recently purchased a pearl cockatiel and according to the pet shop he/she should be about 5 months now. It’s fairly quiet except when i walk out the room. I’m hoping for a male but i guess I’ll still have to wait.
Sounds like a male to me! Heart wings, what Pearl does while strutting, are a huge indication of a male cockatiel. Also since Pearl is a “Pearl Pied”, the pied gene slows down the natural fading of his pearling. So it could take upwards of 2-3 years for them to fully fade away, or he may always retain a bit of them, instead of them being gone after the first molt.
Hi. I’m Musicellie. My husband and I are musicians and violin and guitar instructors. Enjoy seeing your two lovely birds. So nice to have some things guaranteed to make me smile at these days! I’m giving a vote to the yes column- boy!! Such strong boy qualities all of which our very male Qtip exhibits. But either ways they’re funny and sweet birds!! Yes on the pied coloring like pearl you cannot tell visually♥️the lutino colored ones either, she should get the dna test. I had to, wanted to know with my conure and he is a male♥️
My name is melanie and I think that pearl might be a boy cocktail because what you said she was doing in the video and she is very vocal and because of her color is bright and she or he is very pretty bird and cute and she is very bright orange cheeks on her.
Would you consider doing a cage review on the prevue hampton deluxe? I am thinking about getting this cage set up for my cockatiel and then the top cage for my finches but wanted to see what you thought of the cage. Thanks
I got a cockatiel too and I do not know if the bird is a girl or a boy yet but Joey up and down with head too and starts mocking me by tapping the birch because I tap my iPad or iPhone and mocking my toy dog barking like it too and plus talking a pit more.
100% Male. I think I told you this before. No question. No dna test required. Pearl lost some pearls. This means he is 100% MALE. Females don't lose ANY pearls at all. I compared the first video you uploaded of pearl and he had more pearls on his wings. Behaviour wise, all male behaviours. Females very rarely whistle tunes , and rarely strut / drum. Since you have a male, you can teach him to talk, whistle theme songs , and drum a table :) Some males do keep their pearls for longer then 2 years, especially if they are pied or split to pied. Pearl might be split to pied. This mutation mix usually lets the males keep the pearls for up to 10 years, or forever. In some cases, when 2 male birds are bonded (very friendly) , one of the males act more feminine. It is not true when you said at 1:16 that "male cockatiels tend to have darker coloring and female cockatiels tend to have their colors more muted." Mutations create brighter or muted colors, not gender. For example, a cinnamon cockatiel is more lightly colored then a regular normal grey cockatiel, and males can be cinnamon just as females can be. Btw - not all female cockatiels will lay eggs. Some only lay 1-3 eggs their entire life when they do not have a mate. My 3 year old female has not layed 1 egg yet , :) I have dummy eggs ready in case she ever does.
You just solidified my thoughts on my Pied Cockatiel! I bought him, Nigel, a year ago. He was not hand fed so he was really mean when we first brought him home. He has gotten much better and he will walk onto my shoulder from his cage door and play with my hair and necklace. But he doesn't sing, he doesn't mimick, and he still has a bit of a tude. Basically the opposite of Pearl. So I'm pretty sure Nigel is actually Nigellette!
One way to know if your bird is male is to look at the underside of the tail. If solid it is a male if stripped it is female. This is after their first molt.
I too think he's a male. My boy is also a pearl cockatiel and I've been doing research about how/when will he lose his pearls and I've seen a few pictures of the male cockatiels in different ages(after molting) and Pearl looks a lot like those pictures of when they start to lose their pearls, but still hasn't lost it all
Yh I'm farley certain that pearl is a boy I have a male cockatiel myself and when u talked about the strutting and the wing being tucked out if it looks like a heart shaped movement then yes it is a boy I have a boy and a girl and 2 budge so that's why I'm telling u
Nope deffo a male. Female birds do not sing, whistle, mimic or strut. That's a male trait. Also males have the bright yellow face with red checks. Females are not as bright. So Pearl is actually a male pearl cockatiel. 😊
I have a question. I have two budgies. I want to take them out of their cage. But im scared that they will fly away. I have never took them out of their cage. Also how do I make them perch on my finger. Please give me some tips.
I am not sure if my cockateil charlie is male or female i have looked at different pictures of male and female colours and markings . My breeder who i got my bird off says its male . If my bird carnt see me wen i go out of the room i am calling my bird male he really makes a lot of noise to see where i am . I am from liverpool uk . Love ur vidios i also used to have budgied i have had 4 in the past . All were male i know ur budgie pillow is male cause of the blue on his nose. Love watching ur vidios. Xx
Your pearl reminds me of my Charlie, she passed last weekend and I miss her so much :( she was 16 years old and we thought she was a boy when we first got her lol hence the name “Charlie”
Our lutino baby (now 4 years old) also kept us confused for sometime about her gender. I got to know from a legit breeder that beside the visual characteristics, there's one test (a weird one) to test the gender is that you have to touch and feel her vent...if you can feel a gap in the pelvic bones, it's a female, if you feel the bones are pretty close in an inverted triangle shape, it's a male. We tried it and confirmed that we have a baby girl. But we enjoy her strutting, hopping, heart-shaped wings, wolf-whistling 😍 Hope this helps 😊
I've seen female cockatiels act like that. Mine is also pearled but she's pretty quiet, except for the contact calls lol. So loud my budgies shut up. How does Pearl react to mirrors? My female will try to preen the "other bird" and "cuddle" resting her cheeks on the mirror. The males would go up to it and start whistling.
Her behavior says “male” to me but her plumage says “female”, other than her face Honestly I would get a dna test to know her gender, or I would wait a little bit more to see if the stripes on her tail feathers go away From the behavior (especially the strutting) it seems like she might be a male. However, I have seen cases of female birds with male behaviors, even the strutting. This usually happens due to high levels of testosterone in the female. It’s the same reason some female dogs exhibit male behaviors, like urinating with one leg raised.
The strength of colour is a reasonable indicator in wild cockatiels, but not so good in captive bred birds. When I researched the pearl effect (as we also have a pearl cockatiel - Smokie), I found that the gene causing the pearl effect is recessive on the X chromosome. In a male this recessive gene is effectively turned off when they reach maturity due to the dominant gene on the Y chromosome. You have to wait until the moult after 18 months ( when they start to become mature), in order to see if it changes. Smokie started making those keening noises when she was around 2 years, and now does it frequently during the breeding season (all down to hormones). She tends to flatten down and slightly spread her wings when she does it. I'm guessing it is a submissive gesture used to invite mating (Seen in many birds). Based on this, I would expect Pearl to be female (as Smokie turned out to be). As you say, the only real way to know for certain is a DNA test, but that can be a little stressful to the bird. If you are not planning to breed from him/her, then does it really matter?
I personally think that p is a male because she wisles a lot. Female cockatiels very rarely wisle, and instead make a squeking sound instead of wisling. I love Pearl ! She is adorable!! Please post more often!! (Sorry I'm not good at spelling ) :)
Hi I thought my cockatiel was a female when got him but then turned out to be a male and I could tell by his shouting and screaming when went out the room.. He is very loving and loves to be loud x
Happens a lot our cockatiel Ronnie we were convinced was a boy and pet store said they think its a boy but not sure then one day Ronnie laid an egg! Ronnie looks almost identical to Pearl
I've had both genders my first one was s female she never talked her name was Toto and when she passed away it was a couple of years later I got another one and Sherman was his name, the person who I purchased Sherman from said it was a boy. I found out that the female only Whistle, where as males talk but it took my husband and I about a year or so before he started talking he said he was a pretty bird and his name in fact we had him for 21 years. I still miss him
I have a bird named jet blue and we thought jet was a boy because of the whistles they are making. Then...we started noticing the mating calls jet was making...we realized jet blue was a female. Also, jet was VERY difficult to tell because they are albino. So females can be loud yes, so pearl can be a female.
Hi, thanks for your video..Im wondering how you keep the bird doo from ruining your furniture....I have my birds outside but I'd like to bring them in...only I don't want bird shit everywhere.. any ideas ? thanks
i definitely thought pearl is a male. the coloring for a pearl cockatiel can be confusing, but after i compared the two genders off of pictures, and checked some forums, i feel like it could be both. i recommend you get a dna test, as that seems the best option.
Yes, that is so true, in most species of parrots the males will talk much more, i don't think female cocketial do talk , its what i read, i have a Male gcc and wow he is a talker, we had him dna tested cuz i was curious if "Jake" was a boy or girl, the dna proved male, my vet. Even gave me a certificate saying this , with his name and everything, im going to frame it!😂♥️btw with budgies its easy to tell cuz of the blue by the nostrils, i used to have a budgie long time ago, he was wonderful!♥️
Hi I wondered if you I have a cockatiel and it's about 4 years old and every now and again when she's pulling her wings at the she does he squealing noise would you be able to help me to find out what this is cos I'm worried that she she may have her wing but she won't let me she won't let me I'm just a little much appreciated if you could some advice thank you
The pearling on her tail indicates she’s a female but there’s really no way to tell for sure without a dna test. I’m in the same boat. It’ll be rough if we find out in a few years my quaker parrot is a male😂
From the looks of her tail, pearl is leading more on the female side...i have a male cockatiel which as pearl feather as well...overtime u will be able to tell, if it's a male most of the peal further goes away.
A kind request i have a cocktail bird when i took out from the cage that bird is lifting his right wing. It was my mistake i will always be active but after this incident it cannot fly any treatment for my bird. Please
Pearl is a great name. Even though he is most probably a male (because of his head bobbing, whistling, hopping and, pre-heart wings) I think you should stick to the name Pearl because he has gotten used to it. Both birdies are such sweethearts. You guys are wonderful bird parents. Wish you all the best.
I have a male cockatiel who dose mostly male behavior but then he does this thing where he goes into small dark places like nesting behavior and chews whatever happens to be in the dark corner up.
Hi guys. I have an 8 years old daughter and 2 years old boy. We have been thinking about getting a family friendly pet bird. Budgie or Tiel? watched several videos but still can use a word of advice. Thanks
Dean Shehadeh - With a child as young as 2, my first inclination would be for a budgie, since they're smaller and lighter, their nails aren't as sharp, and their bites aren't as hard. (Pearl gives us little nips when she (he?) wants attention, and sometimes they can be a bit uncomfortable. I suspect something like that wouldn't be fun for a toddler.) Of course all birds have different personalities, and getting any hand-raised one would ensure a more cuddly, friendly pet. If you can find a hand-raised budgie, that may be your best bet. Just my two cents. Good luck! 👍
We are having exactly problem here. We bought our cockatiel as boy then later on the breeder said it is a girl. And last week she started to sing and make heart wings. We still don't it's gender, so we say "today Rocky is a boy because she is singing"😂 it is a Hen (None gender)
I’m no expert, we just recently got our first cockatiel a few weeks ago. I’m still unsure on the gender but after watching other videos I think yours is a boy. I’m wondering if ours is too. From other videos it seems the main thing of males is the bright orange where females are dull. But idk. Either way it seems loving 🥰 I hope ours comes around soon also.
Based on coloring, Pearl is (still) a girl. Females retain their pearling after the first molt. The other behaviors that you say are "male" (head bobbing, etc.) are not exclusively male at all. And some females never lay eggs (consider yourself lucky!). The whistle that you described is a flock call, where Pearl is trying to find out where you are. In addition, it is highly unlikely that Pearl was only 4 weeks old at the time you got her, as baby cockatiels of that age are still on formula. Most cockatiels wean at between 10 - 12 weeks.
My cockatail doesn't hop around on the floor my one walks but the marking on the tail feathers are blackb as anD clear and the checks on.my bird are red and the other side a silently orange colour
Read for gender ideas, read further for DNA testing ideas. 🙂 Although a lot of those male hints can be right, the body language hints can be seen in both genders, just more common from males than females. And both genders will do what is a "flock call", but sometimes birds that aren't raised in groups will develop a bit of their own unique flock call. Males and females can also be vocal with chatters and noises, but it's only males that sing or can produce a tune. Another guess for males vs females is to very gently feel the pelvic bones (be careful as those bones are very fragile). Female parrots will be wider set for egg laying, male parrots will be fairly close together. You can search online for this concept, even if just for interesting parrot anatomy purposes. I personally would love for you to do gender tests and then gender reveal videos for both birds. You don't need a vet for a DNA test. Actually, for my vet I asked their gender testing prices and they were way crazy over priced, over a 150$ for a parakeet. The price wasn't even because of quality, it was mostly a price for the vet's time and clinic prices. If you can find a bird shop or bird breeder, and call them about if they let people bring in their birds for gender testing, you could likely get a much better price. One bird shop about 45min away from me does gender tests for about 36$ for a cockatiel. I've seen other breeders/shops be a bit higher at 60$-80$. If you don't have a place near you, then there are online DNA test companies, who range anywhere from 15$ to 80$. You would want a good company, as DNA tests can be wrong and you want a higher chance of knowing you have an accurate truth. Bird shops, breeders, companies can still be plenty accurate though, and might be a little less expensive than a vet. Also, online tests might be a good idea right now because of corona. 🙂
I have a Pied white faced cockatiel and my cockatiel hasent grown pearls yet and frosty is 6 months old at the moment and I think frosty is female and frosty has markings under his/her tail
Michelle Ucciferri I have female Lutino Pearl cockatiel that has been dna tested and she definitely fits the female profile. She never whistles, only flock calls that sound like “meep”s. She is calm and quiet. And my male budgie has been trying to mate with her. 🤦🏻♀️ Looking at the difference in behavior between Pearl and my little girl I’d say Pearl is a male. That’s my guess anyway!
I have a pearl color hen....she does not sing or hop. A tip....I use Polygene dna testing. It cost10 to 12 dollars and they send you the results by email. Very affordable. I will be getting my results back on one of birds soon.......thanks for your show.
My first cockatiel was a light grey & he was very quiet, but a good talker. My present 'tiel alternates between very quiet & noisy, with him getting very loud when he's playing with his toys or he wants to go to bed. He'll also has a specific call when he he doesn't see me & wants to know where I am & I think that's what Pearl's doing with her "annoying" whistle. She still has spots, which if she was was male should have disappeared with her first molt. One thing you can try and check the underside of her tail feathers, specifically the yellowy grey ones, if they have barring she's a female. I knwo it works on grey 'tiels and it's one of the things my avian vet checks for. I also did some quick research & found this link that will help: feistyfeathers.com/2016/03/20/sexing-cockatiels-visually/
Well,I think she is a female as for boys the spots on her were supposed to go away if she was a boy,as when they molt, you don’t really see the spots anymore..molting starts at 6-9 months old, however she seems like she has a lot of spots on her.

Females can leg eggs even without a male when they get hormonal however the egg can be infertile, so you shouldn’t encourage this

Omg I just adopted a four year old female cockatiel named piper and sadly she does not make a microwave noise but she does do a really pretty song
The call is critical in the wild & one of the most natural things cockatiels do. They stay in flocks so the call is important .

Love ur vidios i also used to have budgied i have had 4 in the past . All were male i know ur budgie pillow is male cause of the blue on his nose. Love watching ur vidios. Xx
I love you video please don't stop 🙏😀💪💪💪💪💪💪💪💪
He's a pretty bird, sings struts or talks it's a boy, my girl teil meows like a little cat
Her behavior says “male” to me but her plumage says “female”, other than her face
Honestly I would get a dna test to know her gender, or I would wait a little bit more to see if the stripes on her tail feathers go away
From the behavior (especially the strutting) it seems like she might be a male. However, I have seen cases of female birds with male behaviors, even the strutting. This usually happens due to high levels of testosterone in the female. It’s the same reason some female dogs exhibit male behaviors, like urinating with one leg raised.
I didn't know that, good point!♥️
Have been waiting for this day so long
The strength of colour is a reasonable indicator in wild cockatiels, but not so good in captive bred birds.
Thanks for sharing, love this video ❤️
Is it just me or did pearl sound like a microwave 😄
Cam Cam years ago I had my first cockatiel and the bird went like a microwave too
Cam Cam - A microwave that never turns off! 😳😂
She's a male 😊I have both male and female. My males (Cisco) is very vocal and whistles so many tunes, my female (Olive) just chirps.🥰
Hi, thanks for your video..Im wondering how you keep the bird doo from ruining your furniture....I have my birds outside but I'd like to bring them in...only I don't want bird shit everywhere..
any ideas ? thanks
You wont ever stop the bird poop in doors i just put a cover over the sofas
i definitely thought pearl is a male. the coloring for a pearl cockatiel can be confusing, but after i compared the two genders off of pictures, and checked some forums, i feel like it could be both. i recommend you get a dna test, as that seems the best option.
Aww ur videos make me want a cockatiel even more 😍
Research before I love my baby cockatiel but boy are they neediest little crazy birdies
kelly jimenez - Very true! They're velcro birds - at least the hand-raised ones are. 😊
@@KevinandKrista And I love that about them.
When one gets a bird, is it necessary to know either way? We don't have one yet. Love your channel ❤️
I think it is a boy teach him a few words if he speaks you know it is a boy..you also should teach pillow word my male budgie can say many words!!❤
Kerstin Bak - Fun idea! 👍
Sorry to tell you but im pretty sure that cockatiels do not speak
@@xlays1934 they minic words mostly the males though
@@mariekelly5722 ah. I did not know,i was told that cockatiels dont usually speak, sorry
You can also feel the space between her pelvic bones. If they are very close to each other, then most likely male. Wider apart, most likely female.
I’m getting a cocktail soon I can’t wait!!!
pearl is so cute!!
Hi I wondered if you I have a cockatiel and it's about 4 years old and every now and again when she's pulling her wings at the she does he squealing noise would you be able to help me to find out what this is cos I'm worried that she she may have her wing but she won't let me she won't let me I'm just a little much appreciated if you could some advice thank you
Piper makes a similar noise. He is a dna tested male. He has also picked up a few words.
The pearling on her tail indicates she’s a female but there’s really no way to tell for sure without a dna test. I’m in the same boat. It’ll be rough if we find out in a few years my quaker parrot is a male😂
Rhyse - Yeah, I can't wrap my head around the idea of Pearl being a dude! 😂
Please
enjoyed your presentation..👍🆒
Pearl is a boy, a handsome baby boy!!!🥰🥰🥰 my cockatiel is a male also and he’s sooooo loud singing and whistling 😅
How are you letting it out free around the sofa? Do you do a lot a cleaning after them?
Good luck! 👍
This renembers me of my bird linda she died today she was sick and was Only 5 months Old
no pearl is a female she has bars on her tail
Those go away later in pearls & pied cockatiels, sometimes years.
RANDOM PERSON pearl cocktiels have it even if theyre boys
A lot of male cockatiels have that too. Judging a cockatiel's gender by the bars on their wings and tails aren't accurate.
Umhace you guys thought about getting flight suits since it is like a diaper for when they are out side of the cage
Beautiful pearling! My tiel has sum of that.
We are having exactly problem here. We bought our cockatiel as boy then later on the breeder said it is a girl. And last week she started to sing and make heart wings. We still don't it's gender, so we say "today Rocky is a boy because she is singing"😂 it is a Hen (None gender)
This is a tip from me,female cockatiels scream ,and boy cockatiels tend to whistle more or sing
I’m no expert, we just recently got our first cockatiel a few weeks ago. I’m still unsure on the gender but after watching other videos I think yours is a boy. I’m wondering if ours is too. From other videos it seems the main thing of males is the bright orange where females are dull. But idk. Either way it seems loving 🥰 I hope ours comes around soon also.
pearl could be a attack helicopter
So sweet of them and.you....❤
My cockatiel does all those behaviors including one we'll not mention. He's definitely "he".
I plan on getting a cockatiel but I also have a dog do you think just to not get one then.
Read for gender ideas, read further for DNA testing ideas. 🙂
Although a lot of those male hints can be right, the body language hints can be seen in both genders, just more common from males than females.
What would happen if a pearl is female with light cheeks but it whistles
I have a Pied white faced cockatiel and my cockatiel hasent grown pearls yet and frosty is 6 months old at the moment and I think frosty is female and frosty has markings under his/her tail
Hello. Pearl is a male. I make this observation after working in the bird dept at the zoo. Great bird. Nest regards. Ron. Z. Pgh. Pa.
My cisco does all the same things Pearl does.
Michelle Ucciferri
I have female Lutino Pearl cockatiel that has been dna tested and she definitely fits the female profile.
My green budgie always bite albino budgie's tail, he is always torment him and me.,😝😍
I know also my cockatiel frosty whistles but not every day and etc
I don't have a bird yet I might get one in 3 more years
Pearl is difiantly MALE bird😁 I owned two birds who act just like pearl! Beautiful Bird Pearl is!!!
Pearl is definitely a male! The females are much quieter and dont do any of that stuff💗
Well when I got my first bird, I was told by the vet he would need a pelvic exam...yikes...didn't do it...
I have a pearl color hen....she does not sing or hop. A tip....I use Polygene dna testing. It cost10 to 12 dollars and they send you the results by email. Very affordable. I will be getting my results back on one of birds soon.......thanks for your show.
when pearl stretches her wings If she has dots it is a female if it does not it is a male
Pearl reminds me of my male cockatiel.
you guys are the best
yacine playz - Thank you! ❤️
I wonder if pearl is a male
I also did some quick research & found this link that will help: feistyfeathers.com/2016/03/20/sexing-cockatiels-visually/
pearl is so cute ❤️
I have six budgies they never be quiet no matter what if we buy them a new to or anything.
Well,I think she is a female as for boys the spots on her were supposed to go away if she was a boy,as when they molt, you don’t really see the spots anymore..molting starts at 6-9 months old, however she seems like she has a lot of spots on her.
