This is one of those songs whose existence I randomly remember every so often, but when I do, I then have to listen to it at least a dozen times in a row.
this song and vid, despite the poor old quality, brought me to tears. dream pop / shoegaze music feels so emotionally and spiritually powerful (I'm not even religious), and I haven't found anything as soul-satisfying. I love M83, among other dream pop bands. They've helped me through the darkest parts of my life. I wouldn't be the same without their music, hell, I probably still wouldn't be here. This music is so fucking perfect.
***** I wouldn't call all of these bands dream pop, but they all have dream pop songs/sounds; My Bloody Valentine, Cocteau Twins, The Cure, Bjork, Smashing Pumpkins, The Postal Service, The 1975, Grimes, Crystal Castles, Salem, CHVRCHES, Lorde, Purity Ring, St. Vincent, Bon Iver, CRIM3S, BANKS, FKA Twigs, SZA, The Weeknd, Passion Pit, Portishead, etc... The ones that sound most like M83 though are My Bloody Valentine for that heavy shoegaze feel, Crystal Castles for that synthy eclectic sound, and The 1975 for their emotional dreamy attitudes.
+Abraham Pancake Mash I really liked your list, I knew most of them bar a few and i've checked those out and really enjoyed them aswell. Have a great day and I wish you luck on your journey through life :)
I’ve known this song for almost 2 years and I can totally say that this song save my life. The lyrics, the music, the feeling of the song, and the way it drives me to a whole new world made me feel alive again, and I will always owe M83 for that. If you’re reading this and suffer from depression, anxiety and feels like nothing has a reason, you are amazing and worth it, you can do this, please keep working. Everything will be okay.
Every song by M83 seems to be one of my favorites. Also, I love the beginning of this song. It sort of feels accomplishing, like the melody that would play when your time is up and you’ve done everything you’ve needed to do.
this feels like 2007 to me and it’s making me so emotional.. im glad i was old enough to be aware of the tones of life during that year... before the internet and smart phones dominated identity and life.
You’re very lucky. I remember those times as well but as a child in elementary and middle school but not in high school and forward. Everyone was already addicted to their phones. I guess I was fortunate enough to not have a smart phone while everyone else did. Till this day whenever I go somewhere I always find myself in the same situation me just standing watching everything while people are on their phones it’s crazy but I don’t know.
Man, I can't believe that when an amazingly high spirited song is made that all people can do is compare it to sex or drugs, in my opinion, this is a song written to show the amazing gift of life which we live everyday and to live to the fullest
I played M83 so much last year, I was in the top .5% of spotify M83 fans. I played this song the most. I love, love, love M83 and this song is gorgeous.
'84, so I was still too young to fully enjoy the 80s. But incase you havent noticed, all that stuff is coming back into style again, the clothes, the music...it's all coming full circle. its our turn to party like its 1982.
the video is supposed to be poetic, the name of the song and the lyrics coexist with each other "the more we learn, the more we cry, how fast we learn how fast we die, hear the planet crying" she looks at history and all of the things wrong with the world, war, and all of the people who have died and most are forgotten, (its called teen angst because angst means a feeling of hate and sorrow towards the world but teenagers dont usually know where it comes from) then at towards the end she decides that she wants to kill herself to get rid of everything, but she looks over and sees her future self happy and in love (thats why the girl waves), and she comes to the realization that things will eventually get better.
This is the most beautiful music video I've ever seen. The subtle way that it portrays the main character simply looking for meaning in life and dealing with her isolation is incredibly affecting...especially the scene at the beach where she longingly gazes at the couple. Really powerful stuff. I wish all artist's made music videos like this one.
I've listened to m83 since 2007 and to this day one of the only things that truly makes me happy is I get to be alive during the days of m83. So many generations before me and after me will never get to be part of this and it really is something special.
Its been 10 years since I discovered this band and every song keeps getting better and better with time. This could quite possibly be my 2nd favorite M83 song
The video is about a girl coping with angst. Angst that she's feeling because she has not heard from her boyfriend and ultimately because the relationship is probably over. There are also hints in the video that she may be at a school that isn't a good fit for her. It is somewhat of a continuation of the video for Don't Save Us From the Flames. At the start of the video for DSUFtF the same girl runs and gets into a car with a boy (presumably her boyfriend) and notices another girl across the street looking at the car. The boyfriend and the girl across the street have made eye contact. From there it's not clear if anything ultimately happens between the boyfriend and the other girl and the video (DSUFtF) even suggests that something happening between them is just a kind of pipe dream. In this video (Teen Angst) the girl dreams about the car incident and is haunted by it as evidenced by images she sees in her sleep right before she wakes up. When she awakes she's at boarding school and is presumably a long distance from him. She tries to call him and there is no answer. The video shows him driving in the car suggesting a reason why he's not answering but doesn't make clear where he is going (potentially to the other girl at least in her mind). She's saddened by not being able to reach him and gets ready to go to class. On her way she stops by her mailbox and looks for a letter from him and doesn't see one. This frustrates her more. The rest of the video is her wandering somewhat aimlessly as she internalizes what has happened, feels the angst associated with a break up and starts to cope with it. She starts by doing a reading of a scene in a play with another student (potentially for fun to take her mind off of the boyfriend or for a class to maintain her routine for the day cuz she thinks it will help). She then heads to the library where she seems to try and seek solace in poetry and potentially getting some work done but cannot do either because she is unable to concentrate and in fact falls asleep because she may not be sleeping well because she is so uneasy. When she drifts off her brain dreams of things that make her feel better like horseback riding, poetry and the outdoors. After the failed attempt at the library she tries to go outside and sees some kind of acting troupe and presumably concludes nothing on campus is going to make her feel better. Later she throws her books into a trash can and appears to be at odds with the school. She may be feeling disconnected and lonely and wondering if this is the right school for her. A male in this group also could remind her of the boyfriend. From there she essentially takes time to observe and reflect on life by observing the lives of others through tombstones at a cemetery, seeing children playing at playground, looking at paintings and displays at a local museum, visiting the grave of Robert Frost, and speaking with a local historian. It looks like she must be at a prep school in New England to observe these things. Finally, it seems that only nature can make her feel somewhat better for she smiles when observing the sky and the wind and spontaneously decides to take a bus to the beach because (particularly spontaneously) going to a nice place can heal. At the beach she sees the strength of the ocean as well as a couple. As they walk away she realizes it's not the end of the world because she knows her whole life is ahead of her after observing death at the cemetery and children at the playground. She also seems to accept that love is possible as evidenced by observing the affectionate couple (she smiles when the happy couple starts to walk away down the beach). The video in my mind is just an amazingly subtle onslaught of angst (that is ultimately worked through when she appears to turn the corner and find the ability to cope on the beach). It generates it by eliciting other emotion that can generate an underlying sense of angst. In it's bucolic setting it suggests a charmed life (dissonant with the way she currently is feeling and dissonant from reality for most people). It is constructed to appear to be about nothing or not make sense (confusion, uncertainty). There's a segment where she visits a museum that depicts a battle in the revolutionary war (death, conflict) and imagines herself to be a soldier (curiously right before she makes the break to the place that makes her feel better, the beach). Its context is a teenage relationship that is ending (uncertainty, anger, betrayal, sadness, longing, etc) which is a quintessential source of teenage angst. There's also potentially a class difference between her and the boyfriend as she is at prep school while he appears to be driving with a working class neighborhood in the background. The school in the video for DSUFtF appears to be more modest. She also could be a freshman in college while he is still in high school. They are far apart. The weather is somewhat cold. She also seems to doubt whether the school is right for her. During the the reading with the other student she ends somewhat flummoxed. She throws here books away. She runs from campus. And has a long walk alone from her dorm to campus. And of course it tells the story of a beautiful all american girl trying to heal a heavy heart.
She is in Bennington Vermont where most of this is shot. Except for the scene at the ocean that she takes the bus to. That girl is gorgeous. I decided.
Anthony, this song and M83 in general saved me during the pandemic. I still listen to all the albums pretty much every day but from time to time, when I'm feeling anxious or passing through rough times I come back to this video and for some reason it feels like home. Thank you, my friend.

When m83 were finding thier sound... I feel this album was the gateway to what they are now, im oroud to display your vinyls on my wall as wall art. Going to mulitple shows meeting a couple members of m83... still waiting to meet anthony though.... maybe one day
I hadn't heard this song in like 4yrs and I heard it in Target the other day and I raised my arms with my eyes shut with people around me. I did not care. I was in bliss overwhelmed with emotions and good memories
What I gathered from this is that it’s very hard trying to find a place in the battered, greed-consumed, incredibly flawed world that we humans have built for ourselves.
@dontkeepthisname Same! I've been waiting for a chance to see him since 2004 when I first heard this song on the radio! As soon as I saw he was coming to Austin I bought my ticket!
TEST TO FIND OUT IF YOU ARE HUMAN: 1. Put your headphones in. 2. Turn the volume up. 3. Press play. 4. Close your eyes the entire song. If you do not get goosebumps then you are not human.
is it just me or does anybody else feel that m83 bring your head back to the 80's atmosphere ? they do, especially with kim & jessie & i love the feeling.

I love you Miguel. And more importantly, Jesus loves you. Never give up amigo!
I've said it before, and I'll say it again:
This is the best song of all time.
It is my friend. Soundtrack to so many ana big moments of my life. Much love to you brother
Ana big? Haha the word is amazing
Top 3 m83 song and m83 will always be one of my top 2 bands of all time...so yeah
All m83 is the best of all time
I'd usually call BS on a comment like this but you're correct. This is the best song ever.
M83's "Before The Dawn Heals Us" is without a single doubt, the most beautiful piece of art ever made.
This song feels like a lifetime of emotions wrapped up in 5 minutes

It's def about drugs, bro.
This is M83's best song. It just taps into something both transcendent and deeply human.
Part 1 - Don't save us from the flames
Part 2 - Teen angst
it's just lovely how it's connected.
Everything in nature is connected. :)
M83 always had a unique style. Lovely.

I love old school M83! Finally it gets noticed. These were the first songs of them I've heard, before he was famous... Wish it was better quality!!
Classic M83 track. Really hope they bring this soundscape back in their next album.

How fast we cry

When m83 were finding thier sound... I feel this album was the gateway to what they are now, im oroud to display your vinyls on my wall as wall art. Going to mulitple shows meeting a couple members of m83... still waiting to meet anthony though.... maybe one day
I hadn't heard this song in like 4yrs and I heard it in Target the other day and I raised my arms with my eyes shut with people around me. I did not care. I was in bliss overwhelmed with emotions and good memories

stoked for new stuff. rumor has it that he's using the same synths used on Dead Cities, which happens to be my personal favorite M83 album

How is M83 so freaking righteously amazing!? All the time!
Still great in 2018
What I gathered from this is that it’s very hard trying to find a place in the battered, greed-consumed, incredibly flawed world that we humans have built for ourselves.
it's just so beautifully, painfully correct
This is the one that introduced me and got me hooked on M83.
I can see that this was uploaded before broadband was common. Great track!

I love that this video and the "Don't Save Us From the Flames" video tie together.
This song changed my life...and I'm not sure how.
probably..my favorite song of all time!!
TEST TO FIND OUT IF YOU ARE HUMAN:
1. Put your headphones in.
2. Turn the volume up.
3. Press play.
4. Close your eyes the entire song.
If you do not get goosebumps then you are not human.
Wistful, wounding, and painfully nostalgic
I'm just now discovering these guys. I am impressed. Def. hear a big 80's influence in their music. New Wave-y
is it just me or does anybody else feel that m83 bring your head back to the 80's atmosphere ? they do, especially with kim & jessie & i love the feeling.
Damn it M83, you made me feel again
I saw them preform this song in the Nokia Theatre. let me tell you it was quite AMAZING!!!!!!!! Their performances are handsdown amazing
