- Mezzo-soprano Kate Lindsey sings beautiful aria "Vois sous l'archet fremissant" from "Les Contes d'Hoffmann" (The Tales of Hoffmann) by Offenbach.
A Muse in love ...with Art. Ahhh.
Joseph Calleja as Hoffmann can also be seen here.
Metropolitan Opera, December 19, 2009.
I just saw the live Met broadcast in a theater with Ms Lindsey playing The Muse/Nicklausse. She plays this pants role with an easy grace and her face is so expressive that any time she was in the frame, I could not keep my eyes off her. When she sang, I fell in love. There were strong performances all around, with Vittorio Grigolo as Hoffmann and Thomas Hampson as the villains, but her performance made the opera for me.
You are soooo right!
She is my first cousin! So proud of her!
This is by far my favorite interpretation of Niklausse! Thank you so much for posting, Kate Lindsey OWNS this role!
The best Nicklausse ever.
Angelika Kirchschlagen is good too.
Can I please watch this on repeat for the rest of my life?
Definitely one of my favorite scenes in this production. Stunning performance by Lindsey.
Saw the same in theaters also. I was really surprised at what time it was when it all was over. Just forgot everything while watching/listening to these folks.
She is phenomenal! My favorite Nicklausse!
I was at opening night of Hoffmann back in January and she was amazing. I was in the back for acts 1 and 2 but for the Venice act I was lucky enough to get a sixth row seat and I couldn't keep my eyes off of her
Magnifique
Fantastisch!
Listen to her in the Le nozze di Figaro!
She plays the Cherubino sooooo brilliantly. (OK, she's brilliant in every role, but never mind... :-)
magnifique !! superbe !!!
Not officially yet, perhaps later. But this much criticised 2009 Met production of The Tales by Bartlett Sher was broadcast all over the world. Ask around with opera lovers. Someone may have made a private recording.
Many productions cancel this beautiful aria. Luckily the Met included it, and Kate sang Niklaus´ aria beautifully. I consider myself lucky to have heard her live.
and ditto--yesterday's Met @ the Movies. She's wonderful vocally and a great actress too.
Vive l'opéra français !! i'm a french student in opera, mezzo , i love this song
Does anyone know where I could get a DVD of this full performance?
I don't think it was made into a dvd but I think this performance is on Met On Demand !
i do
Lindsey sings Nicklaus in 2 different casts of this opera. I prefer the 2nd with Grigolo, but it's a matter of taste.
MET ON DEMAND has both. And they give a free trial. It's super worth it.
You might be able to make a DVD...
Check out the latest Marriage of Figaro, too!
If anyone knows where I may find or buy the sheet music to the song, it would be greatly appreciated if you would inform me.
It's a fairly newly discovered aria composed for the opera but, incredibly, cut by Offenbach himself! So it's probably very hard to find to purchase. Having said that, what I would try to do would be to get it at a library and copy it. It is included in the Öser and Kaye versions of the opera but obviously, not in the traditional Choudens version.
Thank you for your help!
Google IMSLP Les Contes D'Hoffmann for the score. This aria is near the beginning of Act II. Make sure it's public domain for the country you're in. It will say so on the link, which it should be considering this opera is well over 70 years old.
She is entrancing as Nicklausse. I prefer her to any other.
I would give Kate my entire life savings to sing this to me on a daily basis. SML.
Where is she from and about how old? Excellent voice and superb control.
The French contribution to this opera is limited. Only the play was cleverly composed by Michel Carré and Jules Barbier from the German poet E.T.A. Hoffmann´s stories. Barbier created the libretto. Jacques Offenbach was a native German, and not always too popular with his French contemporaries. This opera is rarely produced in France. In the recent 2 decades there were only three French productions, and only the Lyon production with the divine Nathalie Dessay was worth mentioning.
Looks like she is doing playback !???
magnifique mais des voyelles peuvent être plus focalisées
