My best mate went to pay his respects at the funeral of George VI. He was 22 at the time and travelled to London from Dewsbury especially for the sombre occasion. I remember him telling me that he queued up all night in bitter cold to file past his coffin. My best mate sadly passed away just over 3 years ago aged 81. I looked after him in his own home. Sadly many years of heavy smoking hampered the quality of his last few years and eventually took him.
George VI strikes me as a brave person who accepted a responsibility that he DID NOT WANT in order to preserve the greater good. God Bless him - his personal sacrifice, and the stress it caused him, literally cut his life short.
Well, yes, he did smoke like a chimney but back then the dangers of smoking weren't recognised as well as they are today - smoking was even sometimes recommended by doctors as a digestive aid or to settle nerves. Sadly it cost him his life. At heart he only ever wanted to be a country squire and family man - he used to call Elizabeth his pride and Margaret his joy, and really, that just summed his entire character up.
"During these last months the King walked with death as if death were a companion, an acquaintance whom he recognized and did not fear. In the end death came as a friend, and after a happy day of sunshine and sport, and after "good night" to those who loved him best, he fell asleep as every man or woman who strives to fear God and nothing else in the world may hope to do." Winston Churchill (whose wreath at the king's funeral contained the messager 'For Valour')
As many know, George VI never wanted to be King. He was painfully shy, stammered and was mistreated by a few members of the royal family. When George ascended to the throne, he was underestimated. With Hitler at the gates, George knew his people needed him. For more than a decade, George was the only force standing between Hitler and the total conquest of Europe. George put his own fears aside and saved not only Great Britain, but perhaps democracy itself. It's quite a legacy.
Beautifully said. He was much loved and proved to be a King indeed. It's often the ones who shy the public and don't even know how capable they are, who are the true ones. Btw, the still pic of a teary Elizabeth at the end is very moving. It shows her deep sadness, and she looks so much like a very young Charles.

The Queen mother was King George's wife, she was Queen Elizabeth's mother. I think you're mixing up things. And the Queen mother loved her family but not many other people. @RicharElden, simply because the very idea of monarchy seems to be weakening,if we look at the opinion of vast swathes of the commonwealth! queen mary was not well enought to attend the funeral and watched from a window at clarence house.she died the following year 3 months before the queens coronation.
@RichardElden That's not entirely true. She does have some power in the case of a constitutional crises. Her real power, however, lies in her approval rating which, like our president's, goes up and down. In a time when her rating is high, she can utilize her rather large 'bully pulpit' to sway public opinion, which in turn sways Parliament. So, although her power is indirect, it really isn't true that she has NO power
@RichardEldin,Agreed re:Elizabeth's succession,though had Edward remained King then E II would have succeeded much later in all likelihood.And,I'm not too sure about Charles being as popular as E VII,unless you say that with your tongue firmly planted in your cheek,lol.
I have read that King George was a good husband to his wife, and good father to Elizabeth and Margaret. With that being said, I wonder if he regretted secretly not having sired a son. I think it is every man/father's desire to have a son. I would think some where in the secret places of his heart.... He wanted a son as well.
@observerking That IS dark. I can't imagine that it would be true but who knows? He was very beloved by ALL of the people from the common people and came to be respected by the nobility, was close to Winston Churchill (as close as could be without showing party favortism), and was equally respected by the Labour Party. Had led the nation as constitutional Head of State through the latter part of the Great Depression and the worst crisis in its history, World War II: I cannot imagine a plot. But?
The movie The King's Speech presented a very clear path between my violin instructour and I. Since I am legally blind, he had to tell me just where each sf or other musical punctuation existed and I had to memorise all of it. I was the one struggling to sing, or speak. He came up with ways to get me out of the box and because of him, I am able to perform. I am finding my voice! Now, if Obama could be as bold and a real leader as George!!! Bengazi may not have been the sham it is!
Whilst I'm not a monarchist,(& I don't say that to be merely contentious),should the queen enjoy the longevity which her mother did,& given that Charles is in his 60s,it isn't beyond the realms of possibility that he will acsend the throne when he's in his 70's/80s,which as far as I'm aware no monarch has ever done.But,monarch he will become as the order of succession dictates.William will be mature enough then to assume his place on the throne,should monarchy survive!
@@racheldemain1940 ... If, when Charles becomes King he becomes incapacitated and unable to carry out his duties fully then William as next in line could be appointed as Regent and effectively would perform duties on his father's behalf. At the moment Charles and Camilla and the Cambridges have taken on extra royal duties as the Queen nears the end of her reign, though she will remain monarch until her death, no danger of her abdicating. As Charles and Camilla are both elderly, he could be waiting another 5 or so years before he becomes King, I imagine he'll rely on William and Katherine in the same way as the Queen currently does.
@RichardElden , You clearly know your stuff! I think there seems to be thread running through the history of Princes of Wales.Playboys who can't keep it in their pants,lol.Early film footage of E VIII as PoW shows him surrounded by adoring 'fans',& his popularity appears to have carried far & wide throughout the empire & further afield.I guess it was his association with 'that woman' which tarnished his image & polarised opinion.Love or duty,eh?! Fascinating stuff!
so how can Charles be King , He cannot marry a divorced woman, or is it ok to have a mistress? He should relinquish his Right as King and William should be King
sunnymarky The Chourch of England has relaxed the rules on divorce and remarriage since Edward VIII. The Queen would not have given consent without consulting with the Lord Chancellor and other legal scholars.
There are stories that some of the white Americans stationed in the UK during WWI tried to have local pubs segregaged as well. Some local pubs agreed then put up signs saying 'no white Americans allowed'
And the U.S. tried to reprimand France for treating black American soldiers equally to other soldiers! That's the difference between the "land of the free" and the true birthplace of human rights.
@sunnymarky The law says that Charles will be king on the death of his mother, period. The only possible difficulty posed by Camilla would be if the Archbishop of Canterbury refused to crown him, but that is (a) highly unlikely, (b) pointless if any other bishop wants to crown him (e.g. the Bishop of Carlisle was the only prelate willing to crown the "heretic/illegitimate" Elizabeth I) and (c) useless because a coronation is not required by law to maintain the crown.
She did, i had covid a year after her and survived it. I remember the shock in Wales once again when their Queen was ill once again but I recovered in 5 days. Wales has been through hell this past year with their Queen being constantly ill
@edj66, You speak good sense.I'm in a quandry as whilst I'm not a monarchist,per se,neither am I convinced by republicanism.As for William,well unless something apocalyptic happens,it's unlikely I'll live to see him become king! We shall see,I guess.

@Glyndwr65 I think Queen Mary met them at Westminster hall where the famous photo of the three queens was taken
Queen Mary was the wife of George V, and grandmother to Queen Elizabeth II
queen mary was not well enought to attend the funeral and watched from a window at clarence house.she died the following year 3 months before the queens coronation.
I asked my Mum why she wasn't there and she said the same thing, that Queen Mary was ill .
She wasn't. She was only Queen by virtue of her marriage to King George VI. She never abdicated as she had no throne.
He did sire a most capable daughter who has done her job very well. Wherever he is now, I'm sure he's proud of that.
I went to Treetops in 1998 and 2000 and went to see the room where she spent the night. It's really expensive to get that room per night.
A very sad day
@observerking That IS dark.
Amazing.
Charles is not well liked in general and would do well to let William perform many ceremonial duties as he is very popular.
I suppose I'd anything happened to Prince Charles , William would become King but there would have to be processes put in place.
@prowlifik yeah but it took a civil war, reconstruction and the civil rights movement for that statement to come to fruition.
@RichardElden ,
You clearly know your stuff!
He was very handsome and personable, but not serious or responsible enough to be King
do they still have their hunting lodge?
Dimitri James is m
@RichardElden ,
Oops,my mistake,lol.But even he had his mistresses all over the shop,so yet another PoW!
so how can Charles be King , He cannot marry a divorced woman, or is it ok to have a mistress? He should relinquish his Right as King and William should be King
sunnymarky Know anything about Henry V111? He was divorced more than once!
sunnymarky The Chourch of England has relaxed the rules on divorce and remarriage since Edward VIII. The Queen would not have given consent without consulting with the Lord Chancellor and other legal scholars.
@RichardElden I'll never agree to that. Both Hitler and Stalin had the blood of millions of people on their hands.
And yet the US segregated people of different colour.
So much for "all men are created equal".
@sunnymarky
The law says that Charles will be king on the death of his mother, period.
@RichardElden ,Er,yes,I believe that's what I said!
Here after the Queen herself has covid. I hope she survives
She did, i had covid a year after her and survived it. I remember the shock in Wales once again when their Queen was ill once again but I recovered in 5 days. Wales has been through hell this past year with their Queen being constantly ill
This would be a lot better if someone hadn't taken it upon himself to stretch the image horizontally. Fake widescreen...yecch.
long life the king
??????
It's Long Live the King
@RichardElden Why would you say a thing like that? Stalin and Hitler were two sides of the coin, and both of them were Evil Incarnater.
@edj66,
You speak good sense.I'm in a quandry as whilst I'm not a monarchist,per se,neither am I convinced by republicanism.As for William,well unless something apocalyptic happens,it's unlikely I'll live to see him become king! We shall see,I guess.
HM King George VI brought me here.
i was 12 days old .
Beautiful hommage to a late King.
Aww here the presenter says The New Queen's private sectary " Martin", those who watched the Crown would know that after reaching Martin was not her private secretrary anymore (he later became her secretary only in 1972)
@TheSirRoberto It won't happen though. I'm not hugely into the Royal family but I agree with you, but I don't think it will happen.
@JuanMacready and probably Princess Margaret
Sorry, niceverdict, but HM Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother was never Queen Regnant
