Some people have pointed out that for Affinity, you don't get "unlimited updates" like I said in the video. You can buy a version like 1.x and have all the updates up to the next major version (2.x). Once the next major version is released, you'll have to buy the update/upgrade for that, or you can continue to use the version you bought for as long as you want. Sorry about the mix-up in the video, and thank you to those who pointed it out!

    • @EjayT06

    • @EjayT06
      @EjayT06 3 года назад +11

@@johnkanzler6646 I mean can't really blame them, it's only $50 to buy the app so it's hard to keep regular income when you get updates for free. It's an amazing app either way so I don't really mind too much spending some money for the 2.0 version if it looks worth it.

I used Adobe products for 30 years and resisted making the switch, I was concerned about the amount of time it would take to learn the differences between Affinity and Adobe. It took about a week to adjust not as bad as I had built it up in my mind. I really hate the endless Adobe bill, now I realize I can live without it.

Same, been with Adobe about 25 years. I don't really like Resolve, but I would immediately switch to it to get away from Adobe.

I jumped ship once Adobe went 'Subscription Only'. If they offered an option to buy, I probably would of stayed. I've been on Affinity Photo for the last several months and I have no regrets, it does everything I need it to do for my projects. I bought the Speed Editor from Black Magic for $300 and it came with a DaVinci Resolve License for free. 2 for 1. I think it's a steal considering Resolve is used by Hollywood professionals. It kinda makes me wonder why people are still on Adobe when there are more affordable and even better options.

Don't forget Fairlight for audio in DaVinci Resolve. It is a non-destructive editor. Every time you apply and edit in audacity you have to either save over your original file, or save a different file with a slightly different file name to keep track of which version of the file that is and what edits have been applied. With Fairlight in DaVinci Resolve, your original file remains untouched and you can go back and change settings and rerender the audio anytime you want.

Very well done comparison, thank you. As much as I like GIMP, the paramount setback of GIMP lies in the fact that you cannot process RAW files. You’d have to use RAWTherapee or Darktable which are excellent and FREE OF CHARGE processors. Anyway, these software tools are not really integrated. Nevermind, a non-professional (maybe even a professional) photographer might be pleased enough to make use of free-of-charge, nevertheless powerful, picture processors.

Thanks Michael! I saw this video a few days ago and since then, have tried some of the alternatives that you suggested (mostly Affinity Suite and DaVinci Resolve). I'm really impressed with what these programs have to offer and they even have some features that are more convenient or easier to do compared to Adobe! As expected, they are missing a few features (ex. Smart object support in Affinity Photo) but they pretty much have everything a content creator would need.
I think next year once my CC subscription is up for renewal, I'll be jumping ship to Affinity and DaVinci but I painfully might have to rent the single app for After Effects. While there are some good alternatives, nothing seems to come close to what AE has to offer for my needs and I'm just more efficient with AE at the moment. I'm still really hoping they come out with a better competitor to AE soon. Heck, I'm willing to pay more if it comes close to what AE offers.
Anyways thanks again Michael for this video!

I just concluded my 3 years transition from After Effects to HitFilm and I'm very pleased... It was the last Adobe software I used...
I've been moving from Adobe software and a few pieces of software that went subscription only to alternatives of one-time payment or open-source. I don't like it when the only option is to rent my tools. Subscription can be an option but not the only one. The same way I like the option of buying a car and there's the option to rent it if I want, I need to be able to buy my work tools outright.
I'm pleased to say that since the past month I'm Adobe-free :-) After Effects was the last to be delete because I had lots of plugins and templates I needed to replace or adapt to HitFilm, DaVinci Resolve (and Fusion) and Blender but I got the job done (not all but what I actually use, I was able to do it). And way before that I said goodbye to Premiere, Photoshop, Lightroom, InDesign, Illustrator, Audition.
If anyone is interested (or on the same path I was) here are the programs I use the most on a daily basis: DaVinci Resolve Studio, HitFilm, ShotCut, KDEnlive, OBS, Aegisub, Synfig Studio, Papagayo, Pencil, HandBrake (video), Fairlight, Audacity, Ardour, LMM Studio (audio), GIMP, Krita, Darktable+digikam, RAW Therapee+Photivo, Affinity Photo, Luminar, (photo), Scribus, Inkscape, Affinity Designer and Publisher (graphic design), HitFilm Pro, Fusion Studio, Blender, Natron (VFX), Ashampoo Burning Pro , Img Burn, DVDStyler (media burning), GNU/Linux distros, LibreOffice, Task Coach, Tryton, Thunderbird, FileZilla, 7zip, Clonezilla, Free File Sync, GRSync, GParted, PhotoRec (other).

A fantastic price and don't forget, it's recently been updated the the pretty awesome 1.9 version. All 3 apps work pretty much seamlessly together. Great user interfaces, quick, fluid, user friendly and intuitive, speeds up workflow no end, and produces great work, which is very high quality/professional. I have been using Adobe CC for a while and still use it, but in all honesty, I really do prefer Affinity all-round. @MichaelSturgill  2 года назад +1

I think the Affinity suite would be great to learn as a beginner, especially if you are looking for a more affordable option to get started. You make some really great things with it. However, something you might want to keep in mind is that while Affinity is great, it's still a newer software, so it might be missing some features from Adobe and if you plan to get a job or work with other designers, Adobe is still unfortunately the standard, so it would be a bit more difficult to collaborate on a project. But I do think starting out on with Affinity is a great choice. If you need to, you can always learn other software down the road. Hope this helps!

Especially if you are editing... Resolve, Affinity, Adobe, Gimp are all there as well... but Final Cut and Motion are pretty special and worth taking a look at... I've been using FCP from it's beginning and like it a lot...
The OS is a lot easier to use than Windows... a lot more direct since you don't have to deal with a shell over your directory.
Not saying it's perfect... any computer can have problems, but in the time I've been using Mac, (lots of years), I've only had a few viruses and those were gotten rid of easily... and the few hardware issues didn't kill my production for days or even hours... You can tell I'm a Mac fan, but seriously give them a look see...

I'll only miss Lightroom, to be honest. I don't need the rest- always used Final Cut Pro or DaVinci. (And now Affinity) Great video, dude!

Nice. Yeah, I feel that. The one I do kinda miss is After Effects but other than that I love everything I use now

also Affinity designer is only 800mb in storage, while adobe illustrator is 1.5 to 2 GB storage

I didn't know that. Thank you. Another reason for me to like Affinity even more haha

Hi. I like Ae because it is easier and faster to do 2D vector animations. Resolve has those node based functionality which seems more complex for such tasks. So you found any solution for that? Or you don't do this kind of animation?

I do a little bit of animation like that but not enough for me to really notice a difference. I will say that is something that AE was really good for though and I can understand why someone might not want to move away from that because the process can take a while in Resolve

@@MichaelSturgill Okay. But suppose one has no wish to use Ae (because expensive). And he decides to use Resolve (because can't find any other good free alternative). Will he get used to 2D animation over time? Or he should look for other alternatives?

@@fanatic632 I mean, I have gotten pretty use to it, but I mostly just do simple motion graphics. If you need something more complex, resolve could take a lot longer than other software. If you don't need to do anything too crazy complex, though, Resolve would work great.

@@MichaelSturgill To be spicific, I've shared 3 small videos in G-drive that I made with After Effects. Is it possible to do this with davinci resolve (using inbuilt fusion)? Would really appreciate it: drive.google.com/drive/folders/1y718hDE-DXaxHfbv4c7AxXxwp2SCZJP-?usp=share_link

Yeah you could definitely do those in fusion

What I dint understand with DaVinci is why it's it so hard to buy it. A literally want to give them my money but can't find where to buy it.

Yeah it's kinda annoying you can't just buy it online. The best place I've found is B&H. I think they also give you a speed editor when you buy resolve studio right now
