Man! I watched you when my brother came from Istanbul and gave me the ney, and many months past and I never forgot how I tried and got a tone from the ney, now I’m back and rewatched your video and you motivated me again!!! Now it’s time to learn the ney, I’m recording my second album and the ney will be on it!! Thank you. 🍀
THANK YOU for your video. I bought an Arabic ney and I just couldn’t get any sound out of it. After watching your video through several times, and a couple of hours practice it suddenly “clicked” how to do it and I can now reliably get lovely sounds from the instrument. You’re an absolute star!
hello as an additional tip: I found out that if you can't get a sound from the ney despite practicing for a long time, you should simply de-grade the mouthpiece, especially with the plastic version. As was well explained, the sound on the mouthpiece is created by splitting the airflow. The plastic mouthpiece of my ney was round and blunt. Of course, no sound could be created in this way. I sharpened the edge of the mouthpiece with a knife and now I can play nicely.
Thank you! I just opened my NEY assuming it would make sound automatically bc it LOOKS easy hahaha. So thanks for perfect precise informative details , got it the first time! Now to find it again 😅
thank you for the content you share with people through RUclips. Do you also have a video that has specific tips and tricks about bass tones and how to make them sound like sufi music? I have been playing the ney for 1.5 years now, but my teacher has not been able to explain it to me so I am still searching. I do exercises with the ney every day but I don't know exactly what to do. musical greeting from Robin
Hello, you can take a private lesson with Niri: www.arabinstruments.com/products/private-ney-lesson-with-niri-sadeh It can help you a lot , also we have some free lessons here: www.arabinstruments.com/pages/ney-lessons
Thank you for this. It is a challenge, but one I am enjoying. I’ve got a background in western concert flutes, Chinese DiZi, and Xiao. This is nothing like those which to me, makes it a fun challenge that I know will be very rewarding once I get it!
Update: I am now producing good sound from my Kawala, and, am learning the maqams as well as just playing from the heart. I will definitely be purchasing one of yours when I save up for it.
Sometimes beginners can be more helpful for beginners because they are going through it and experimenting themselves. On that note, I have left some notes here: Okay, first let me say something that everybody should be clear on. I have tried for hours, and finally made my first 3 clear notes (so far, but have to go to work now). MORE THAN LIKELY, YOU ARE BLOWING **TOO HARD**. Second note, don't concentrate so hard on blowing STRAIGHT FORWARD. It is not STRAIGHT FORWARD. More like a natural whistle, the air kind of points downward. And one more time you are blowing TOO HARD. You're welcome, to whoever else is struggling. Great video though! Just thought this was important to point out. Concentrate on making a note lightly first, and the shape of the airflow, and THEN worry about blowing harder later. TRUST ME ON THIS. Also, feel at least half of the rim of the opening touching your lips. The flute itself may be facing at about a 30-40 degree angle, but the hole is NOT. Edit: Oh, and this part is hard to explain, but YES, as stated in the video, it only works with DIAPHRAGMic breathing** Edit 2: Start out with a whistle position, and to make the note clearer, and then, as stated in the video, focus on the width of your air path, and feel yourself making it more like a "laser" for a clearer note!!! Also, KEEP YOUR TONGUE like you are whistling, but you're not actually whistling!!
@@raquelagras3426That's not good. The Ney is tempered enough to where you should at least get a change in pitch if the holes are covered properly. Are you covering the thumb hole?
@@tradscendence Hi! Thanks for the reply :) Since I'm not a musician, I'm checking what note I produce with a tuning app on my mobile. Whether I cover just the ashiran or do the C position, I get a too high-pitched sound. I have tried blowing softer, but it is as if the air stays in the bashpare area and doesn't sound like the beautiful ney sound it should be.
@@raquelagras3426Ah İ see, so it sounds like what's happening here is one of two things : İnstead of concentrating the air into the instrument at the correct angle, you are compensating why blowing too hard at an improper angle... OR... You are simply blowing way to hard, or "fast" air. İn which case, you would be absolutely correct about the sound not traveling much further than the Baspere. Try to find that connection, and try to do so by beginning with softer blows! You'd be surprised with how sensitive the Ney actually is to air. 🙏🏻
Hi Niri, my name is Franck and I’ve purchased 4 Neys from you so far. Love all your videos, man! 🙌🏼 🙏🏻 I can now finally produce a sound and play up the scales decently but not consistently. This video is super helpful! 👍🏻 From the bottom of my heart, thank you and Arab Instruments for your products, videos and guidance. 🙏🏻🤓🥂🎶
Salam Niri, all your past tutorials have been so helpful! But well, its always nice to have new updated videos too 😌 thank you for all your great tutorials. I have been very inspired by you and have even got my first ney from you 2+ years ago! Many thanks 🙏🙏
Thanks for the great instructional videos. I got my first Ney last week. I produced a sound on my first day. The higher pitch sounds are easier to produce than the lower ones. I'm working on producing lower pitch sounds. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for the tutorial! I can finally making sound from this brilliant ancient reed instrument (although I bought a pvc one to begin with). This video really helped me A LOT🙏. I'm sure I'll get a better reed-made Ney from you after some more practice. Cheers for our marvelous folk music art!
I have been playing the shakuhachi for about 3 years now (you can see a few examples in my channel) so i think i can have sound production down if i try hard enough for a bit. I'm gonna order a supurde and see how it goes!
Thank you so much for your video. Just got my first ney. Ordered an Arabic Nay without a mouthpiece- mine has a mouthpiece so I am guessing it’s a Turkish ney??? Does is matter which one one starts with? Can’t wait to be able to make a sound 😊 Not there yet but only started 15 minutes ago. Wish me luck. And that I don’t hyperventilate 😅
Thank you, is a technique exactly the same regarding the physics of producing the tone for the Turkish and Arabic ney. Mine is Persian and therefore does not have a mouthpiece like yours. Additionally I noticed most players with an Arabic instrument put it inside their mouth and here you are only holding the instrument outside of your mouth
That was amazing, I’ve never tried too blow a Nay let alone play one, it sounds similar to the Native American rim blown flutes, I’m gonna get Nay !!!!
Hello Nery, thank you for your tutorials about the ney instrument. I want to inform you that when I play on the ney the tuning are not correct when I play with my tuner on my phone. Can you inform me if my ney are not tuning or I have another issues with the ambazure. If you can make some tutorial how to practice with the tuner it will great. Thank you
Thanks a lot for your excelent video, I am just a beginner with nay, but i have played quena flute .The most dificult thing with Nay is to produce low register. Can you help me? thank you
Hi, nice tutorial, Thank you! One question: The lips, you call or pronounce it "ambajur". How is it written correctly and is it Arab language? What is the exact meaning of this term? Thanks for help!
Hi Niri! I got a ney as a gift (from your site) and it doesn't have a mouthpiece. Is that necessary to play? I'm having trouble getting any sound at all and Wonder if it's because I don't have a mouthpiece. Thanks!
Oh yeah just like cooling a burning sword. What else? All kidding aside I love this instrument and I’m committed to learn it. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Salam alaikum kardash, I'm from Mexico, I've been watching your videos, I like it so much. I want to learn to play the ney, I'm Muslim and Sufi student, I just have one question, which ney it's best to star learning? I'm thinking on buying Kaz Ney from plastic. What do you think? I appreciate your answer, Allah bless you.
Great video! I don't have problems making the ney sound, but I really can't produce any sound when all the holes are covered! Any tips on that? Thanks!!
I'm also a beginner on the Ney, and the note with all holes covered took a long time to produce. In the beginning I couldn't, then I was able to do it, but the volume was much, much lower than for other notes. But now I can do it pretty easily. If you keep practicing with the notes you can produce, and slowly get a more and more solid sound, perhaps the lowest note will sound too. Btw, I have the arabic Nay and it has an even lower register before that, with all 7 notes, but that one is really difficult.
Okay so I'm back with an unfortunate update... Although I'm able to get almost 5 clear notes, in order to do that, I have to push my bottom jaw forward in a very uncomfortable way. I have an overbite... Now I have to either live with the fact that I'll never be able to play this instrument, or somehow figure out a special angle of airflow to compensate (maybe by positioning the Ney more downward? Idk, we'll see...) ... I play 21 different instruments, I even play the Duduk with no issues, but this would be my first true woodwind instrument, and so this factor never crossed my mind until now... 😥
Goodness, I thought that I had a fog horn sound from new plastic ney two weeks ago, but still cannot get any sound. You have given good instructions, but just can't seem to get it.
Thank you for this! It seems like when I finally get it, the next day I've lost all I accomplished. But I am getting better and this will help 🙏 Is it normal for the ney to get deformed where your lips touch? Mine is a bit white and deformed.
Mine doesn't have a mouthpiece thing on the top.... I have like 20 of them and none of them have the mouth piece on it...... Is that why I can't make a sound are you supposed to have a some kind of special mouth piece or something?
Sorry, commenting again! Another thing just hit me, it helps if you try imitating the Donald Trump "Billions and Billions" face! This may be more true for me since I have a bit of an overbite, but works for me. XD ... But now I need to figure out a way to get this image out of my head. bagh.
