As someone who does a lot of long range patterning with both 12 and 20 it amazes me how few people realise that a 20 bore, choke for choke, gm for gm, will always out pattern a 12 at long ranges 50 to 60 yards. On average a 20 bore will deliver an extra pellet (5 shot pellet size) per 4 gm in a 30 inch circle at long range. A not insignificant extra 8 pellets at 60 yards from a 32 gm load. The only real difference is that a 12 bore produces a shorter shot string than a 20 bore due to the larger bore diameter but then again, many experts prefer the longer shot string of the 20 to 'lay' across the line of the bird. Any modern O/U 20 bore can fire 32 or 34 gm cartridges today, although my testing indicates that any load above 32 gm in 12 bore or 20 bore will produce less satisfactory patterns than 32 gm at long range, so 32 gm is the optimum pattern wise at 50 or 60 yards in ether calibre. The only time 36 gm loads pay is at shorter ranges like 30 or 40 yards but ironically people buy heavy loads for long range and then squeeze them through full chokes and blow the pattern completely. The only way to pattern a gun is on clean virgin paper or cardboard and then count each pellet in the 30 inch circle. Very few people bother to do this so they do not collect genuine scientific data, just apocryphal opinions. Most people would be shocked at the results of testing their guns properly at 50 or 60 yards rather than 40 yards. It would result in a massive reduction in sales of heavy loads like 36 or 38 gm for certain!
Another great show, the segment about the Staffordshire Bull Terrier was exceptional, If brains were made of dynomite the RSPCA would not have enough to blow their nose. And that people is a FACT!!
My beaters day is just round the corner and will be shooting my 20 was wanting something on 20 bore shells like what ones are good but this willl so perfectly

enjoyed the show this week. Good to see Andy can miss a few but confirmed my worst suspicions about David. A few spots of rain and he is hiding in the Gator like some spotty jotter blotter at school. A sad state of affairs. On the Fieldsports Nation film, it was an interesting expose and all that but not relevant to Fieldsports as such other than it is the RSPCA being utter c#'&5. The state the older dog was allowed to get into is disgraceful and the people that allowed him to get that way should be banned from caring for animals. The point is, though, if we are going to do Fieldsports Nation stories, we need to report something relevant to actual fieldsports. Good news stories are welcome as well as bad news stories. The good news ones can be uploaded on Twitter and Facebook and retweeted, liked and shared. Personally, I'd like some science based stuff in there from time to time with the GWCT as, in a fact based world (sadly not anymore) science will help us. A "trophy" hunting story and how Goldsmith's ludicrous proposals will wreck both African and UK rural economies would be a good place to start. Thanks again for a great show.
Thanks Colin. I agree it's not relevant to Fieldsports but, if the new UK government goes ahead with its Office for Environmental Protection, then they need to know what the RSPCA is up to. The OEP could affect us all. But I will make sure the next story is squarely a fieldsports one. / Charlie
